Yes, it's a 7 person war but with a twist.
If a master loses their servant, they cannot summon another. But they can be killed and their grail fragment taken, which authenticates them as a legitimate participant in the war. A magus that has a catalyst and sufficient mana can then summon a servant of their own after possessing the fragment for 24 hours. Basically, if one master kills another, they have to make sure to secure the grail fragment or someone else can take the place of whoever was just killed.

Personally, I'd think Saber Beowulf would be his older form who I've made a sheet for who would have the sword of the giant rather than Grendel Buster. His swordsmanship was never really commented upon but it's worth noting that he did also fight in wars against regular men and tended to crush anyone he fought, and it was only against foes like the dragon that he broke his swords against.

He's probably not the world's most skilled swordsman, but he's definitely no slouch, and with Hrunting's passive effect he'd be a fairly big danger. He'd still unfortunately be relatively boring for a Saber class Servant in all honesty though, so I can see not using him for that. Hope the fic goes well whatever you do with it.

Hou Yi's story isn't particularly convoluted. I'm a chink who learned about him in elementary school, so it's a simple tale. As a god, he came to the earth to solve the problem of the ten suns scorching the earth, and asked the sun-birds to stop, but when they refused he killed nine of them. For that, he got banished from heaven. He got potions/pills of immortality for him and his wife so they could go back to the heavens together, but one day when he was out hunting and a robber entered the house seeking the pill she ate both and flew off to the moon. After that he went mad.

Ravana is a lot more complicated, but I'd suggest you read Ramayana and Mahabharata since they're important pieces of Hindu literature anyway. For Chinese stuff, idk, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is probably the easiest place to start.

If it's too much of a hassle, just use Wikipedia like I do (though I only use it for obscure servants that no one knows anyway)

Arjuna really doesn't have an edgy hero thing. His whole character arc is realising that he's blowing something wildly out of proportion thanks to the way he was brought up, through no fault of his own, and that even if he did a bad thing once that doesn't mean that he's not still a hero and not still a good person. It's one of the least edgy hero stories I can think of.
