Also really basic particle effects.

Anon is a faggot who won't at least try it out himself. I mean, as the dev can ultimately do what he wants, but he's still a faggot. Pic related literally took me 2 seconds.

Anyway, here's an example of what it might look like if he was facing forward. Note that due to the set up of the pixel art, his head has to actually grow in size to be in the middle. It can't remain at the original size because then it would always have to be off, unless he changed the rest of the body. Basically, the head is four pixels, an even number, while the body is five, an odd number. I made the head five pixels wide and moved the arm down one pixel.
>>
>>182651689
Taking pics there is a side mechanic and it's not like that game would ever get made in the first place.
I'd prefer a game where you're a voyeur man or woman full time.

This will be the actual way any computer will do it on the lowest level. No matter what kind of syntactic sugar you'll put on top of it, compiler will make a series of if-then from it anyway.
So you are just writing it the best possible way for a machine to understand what you want to do. I don't know what did you mean by "actual way" but this is the most direct way.
>>
>>182651912
I get your point. But now that you've tried it for me, I can also say it looks bad. I might change it in the future, but really I don't care about it now enough to change it.

In the real world almost all combat tecniques assume that you turn your body sideway when facing forward. This is done to reduce your attackable area and increase defence, and also to improve forward-backward maneuverability.
>>
>>182652119
Yeah. I'm thinking if the big head version came first, it wouldn't be so bad. But the smaller head is already the standard, and what's more, I think it's a little closer to believable anatomy. Although the art is just single colors, the big head version looks more "cartoony" than the smaller head version. Ultimately, I would go for the original version. Although it facing off to the side might feel weird, at least it has an uneven, and therefore more interesting, silhouette.

But yeah, I know this is just a small thing, but I recommend devs everywhere at least try to consider feedback. If you don't agree with something, explain why instead of saying "I'm not gonna do it." That just makes you look lazy.

Anyway, sorry to single you out. The fact that you post progress at all means you're not lazy and are willing to work on your game. It just bugs me to see people automatically throw away feedback that could *potentially* make their work better. But yeah, feedback definitely varies too.

I like your magic system, but I think you should turn all abilities into AoE abilities and change your magic damage types.

You could do three types, metals, gases and catalysts. Alone metals is just metal dust that blinds enemies, gases just slow enemies down and catalysts cause various effects (fire, lightning etc.)

This allows players to collect different kind of metals, gases and catalysts, to create different effects. You don't even need to design these. Just get the periodic table and get the chemical reactions from there. Magnesium and Fire? Hot fire that melts enemies. Sulfur, saltpeter and coal? Explosions.

Players can slot these in from the inventory window and experiment with different types of reactions.

As for AoE.

Did you play WildStar? Every ability had a different shaped AoE shape. For metals you can do a small cone (for dust), for gases and round aimed disk and for catalysts a long lance. Maybe have different AoE effects for different mixtures of chemicals.

You could create a shitload of depth for a roguelike like this. Even make the materials lie around. Metals in caves, catalysts at shrines and gases from dead or rotting bodies.

If I wasn't on another project I would want to join you as an ideaguy.

PS: If you increased the resolution of your game and added cute armored girls you would make MILLIONS.

I like slopes more in metroidvanias. If it's a straightforward platformer, I don't think you absolutely need them. But it all depends on the design. Mario 3 and Sonic make actual gameplay use of slopes with the sliding and rolling, respectively. If you don't do it for the gameplay potential, I guess it would just be to have more natural looking stages.

Owners!=Buyers

I bet my ass that this guy handed out at least 400 free keys to try and get reviews.
$300*0.7 = $210
$210 - $100 steam fee = $110

The damage for making yourself known as a shovelware dev and therefore effectively killing any sales prospects on future games (that may not be shovelware) is not worth the $110.
Heck even if he sold every single one of the copies and got 0 refunds it's still not worth it:
$700*0.7 - $100 = $390

Possible, but that would require him to register as a different company on steam, he's probably selling this as an individual and you only have so many identities and addresses you can use before steam tells you to fuck off.
You may release using a sibling's name and address, but then you are just going through an insane amount of effort for $100 bucks, easier to give handjobs for $5 in the bathroom of your local McDonald's.

You can't register with the same name and address multiple times if you plan to do business with steam, they ask you for a couple of papers.

Theoretically, could I be sued by bethesda if I do a straight rip-off of their hacking mini-game from Fallout?

But someone who makes 30k flashing their tits actually spends a lot on body lotion, a good diet, exercise to keep fit, surgery, etc.

They're a cool company, probably not going to fuck with an indie dev like that. It would be an obscure patent troll or company under a bridge who made a game in 1982 who can't sue Bethesda for something similar to the hacking game but can sue you, you get the picture.

Do you really think a bad game is something that ruins an identity? It takes deliberate effort to ruin your identity, it takes especially bad behavior, gogem or phil fish levels somewhere around there. You're PMSing about some guy making less than $1k off a mobile game, how do you survive the concept of the google play or iPhone market? Don't look at it, is my advice, you seem like the type to fucking hang themself at the notion of how much money is being made with shitty games.

A dev can release a bad game and if it makes money move on with no problem. People aren't going to follow him to his next game and stop others from buying it, you can't do that to a lowly shoveldev unless they kidnapped your kids or something, nobody will give a shit about your salt, you can only abstain from purchase yourself.

Sure, as I said before, best scenario he made $390 before taxes. I do that in less than 3 days freelancing part time (web dev). Going through the entire process of releasing a game on steam alone takes more than that.
I mean, good for him but claiming that selling shovelware is in any way admirable or advisable is silly, especially if you plan on doing this on a more serious manner in the future.

You seem to be too easily impressed, that's all.
Not salty, just running numbers. If you are going to do that kind of stuff you are probably better off doing legit work.

>>
>>182658556
Releasing one shitty game on steam isn't a bad rep, it's no rep, and the vast majority of people who might hear about his subsequent games would not associate him with his previous games until after seeing a trailer or screenshots of any new thing he might be producing.
>>
>>182656680
this is useful stuff. I'll keep this for my future mech game, if I ever get around to making one.
But why make a universal joint and not not one like these? It allows for realistic rotation.Though, I guess it is a lot more effort to implement.

The more mechanical the create is, the easier it is to model.

Organic creatures are complex and require a lot of work.

Androids are simpler, but still complex.

Robots have less moving parts and are easier to rig and model.

Machines (vehicles, aircraft, ships, space vessels) are the easiest to model and animate, because they have the least moving parts.

They're the type of person to contact you after the game has sold well and start legal issues.

It's not that hard.

The reason it takes AAA studios longer is due to the fact they're the ones who have to come up with the ideas and how to execute it properly.

If you're just mindlessly copying the game, then it can be done in a fraction of the time since the idea/concept part is already done.

There's nothing particularly special about Mario Odyssey.

depends

As far as learning goes, usually a simple tool that doesn't deform is easier learn how to make than something that's organic.

Though as far as actual workflow/time investment goes, I could pump out a bunch of morpsuit men faster than I could make a good mech. You also sorta have more "artistic room for error" on an organic structure. Though ultimately either one could be more complex than the other. Another anon mentioned that modeling a plane was easy, but not if you're actually whipping up a cad file for each part down to the screws.

>But it would be easier to protect that kind of joint than those at the beginning of a member.
How? It's a tiny little fragile piece with low range of motion. Action figures and gunpla etc almost always have rotation points sticking out the ends of the joint. If you just stab the red cylinder into the forearm (or have the forearm stab a cylinder into a hole in the joint), you don't even have to model it, since it'll always be concealed. You can just leave a flat face like on top.

I'm running into trouble making abilities that interact with one another in interesting ways. To that end I've decided to try and codify ability synergy when it comes to RPGs. Here's what I've come up with:

Synergy is the result of two or more pieces producing additional value when used
together. Examples:
*Multiplication: One ability increases the effect of another ability that triggers multiple times. A buff might cause an ability to deal +25% damage but as the ability hits every nearby enemy the value of the buff is increased.
*Stacking: Multiple abilities increase the same attribute to an extreme value, producing an exponential effect. A pair of difference buffs might each increase a character's ability to dodge attacks from 50% to 70%. 70% is more survivable than 50%, but 90% is exponentially more so.
*Exposure: One ability causes another to affect more targets, or to affect targets it couldn't before. One ability might draw foes to a certain point while another blasts them.
*Cover: One ability compensates for another's weakness. One ability might cause a character to deal and take double damage for a turn while another might make them invincible for a turn.
*Fuel: One ability allows another to be used more often than expected. One powerful ability might cost a lot of mana while another reduces the cost of the next ability used to 0.

What do you think? Do you have anything to add? Any thoughts on the proper way to design abilities that combine well with one another?

>Synergy is the result of two or more pieces producing additional value when used
it's easier to say "when two things are more than the sum of their parts"

>Multiplication
>Stacking
These sound like almost sound like redundant categories. If I were you, I'd look at the difference between addition and multiplication in minmax games. Suppose I've got a ring that adds 5 levels of strength, and a ring that adds 20% more strength. Below 50 strength, the +5 will always add more, but above 25 strength, the 10% ring will add more levels than what the 5-level ring would add. So as a low-strength mage, the additive ring would help you diversify, but as a high 50 strength character you would have a ring that adds twice as many strength levels as the mage's ring, comparatively rewarding you for your focus as compensation for your lack of diversification.

Though sometimes it's good to also diversify your amount of diversification, if that makes any sense. So like, say we're playing a third person game and I've got a bomerang that penetrates enemies, applies damage plus a slowdown effect on contact, and always returns back to me. This would be great for a melee character because it diversifies your range, allows you to close the gap by slowing down your opponents, and can hit twice if you manage to pin them down with your melee weapon. And on top of that, since you don't reload until the boomerang comes back regardless of your character's reload speed stat, it makes lots of sense to use it on melee characters.

But allowing for total synergy isn't always good. If I've got a gun that heats up my character, but another gun that fires the heat away, those tools can be used to shoot indefinitely when used in conjunction with one another, so you have to add a catch. For example, the heat-drain gun might make you immobile, and the heat-generating gun might be unable to effectively dissipate heat on it's own, forcing you to occasionally immobilize yourself.

I'm thinking of turning my space kit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hxBsFkVK-Q) into a space combat roguelite

Start the game with a carrier you can pick from and unlock more, jump around to events like FTL, and fight ships by launching a fighter you can upgrade/change and taking out the enemy carrier

I'm torn between doing this next or making a more traditional hand crafted campaign based space combat game

I'm in the process of trying to create an inventory for the first time ever, and although I know how I want the inventory to function, how to get it to look nice and how to get it to function how I want is a different matter though. UI isn't my strong suit at all.

This is showing a prototype example of picking up weapons, and looking at them through a weapon box, sort of like in Monster Hunter, though I don't have equipment slots enabled at all yet.

I should also say there's really no reason to do the old school modelling nowadays, you can do everything, including hard surface, in Zbrush and if you don't want to use it that much, it's still a great way to block in your stuff and maybe produce a base for you to bring into some other software.

any libgdx guy here?

I have a chicken class that contains a 3D modelinstance and other data.

In my gameloop I have an arraylist of this chicken class.

but my problem is that I cannot render it.
modelbatch.render accepts a list of instancemodels, but I can't iterate over the chicken array because is not an array of modelinstances and sending the chicken.get(0).model gives me an error that is not a list.

help pls.

I'm bored of Unity and even though it's initially easier to work with, it seems to always get bogged down in the long run and I can't finish anything. Everything seems to be "on rails" and making it work/look less "Unitiy" is never easy (UE has the same problem for me).

I want an engine which gives me more control over what I'm making, but without the need to reinvent the wheel. Tried Love2D and it's pretty much what I want, only downside is being Lua.
I'm gonna try Godot as well.

Any other suggestions? Having 3D support is a bonus

Actually I think there's a sweet spot of not intending to be speedrunnable, but allowing for the possibility in creative ways. Speedrunners don't want to run games that are meant for speedrunning, a lot of the excitement is from a sense of pushing things in a direction they weren't initially meant for. In other words, I think some games that are popular to speedrun would not be as popular for it had they been designed with speedrunning in mind somehow.

No i mean it's a shmup, the only thing you could do to speed it up is to hit the timeline skips here and there if you kill stuff fast enough and dump into the bosses super hard.

There are strats and mechanics to maximize score though, so that and challenge runs like 1cc's, nodeaths and no gimmicks will probably be the meta game.

som late night progress==

+lasersight finally works perfectly, cracked the code and now i'm happy. just need to tune some collisions so it shows on everything, currently it goes under certain objects with complex surface.

+made new room for the level, or actually first real not dev-testroom. tomorrow gonna decor it more and add gameplay scripting and then start working on another rooms. Then connect them all up and add the ability to complete level and move on.

+whole new healthbar with tekken effects, also there's actual stat system so adding new ones will be easy in future.

+time tracker, there's one for game time and one for countdown for the level time left. (total game time will be hidden and only shown after level completion)

+lots of optimization stuff which doesn't show on video

+-objective/quest system almost working perfectly. the basics of it works but still needs some finetuning and couple improvements.

Looks pretty decent for someone starting out. A few things worth pointing out maybe: He looks like he's leaning forward, about to topple over. The arms are too short and look like shapeless flabs of flesh. The outlines are inconsistent with solid blacks used only at some parts (or maybe you have a full black outline in addition to outline of another color on the trousers for example - can't see with the black background). Best to avoid using pure black like that altogether. As for the animation, there isn't much of it; even if you just want an animated handwave, you can make it much more lively by adding animation to the whole body.

This stands for pretty much anything programming related unless you really want to go low level and get as much performance as possible.
One of the reasons I'm dropping CS and going for CIS.
That being said, art stuff can also be learned on the side if you're not terrible at designing your game.

I've got time in that game, I played it a bit more when I had time, but I'm busier now. It gets you hot blooded like any competitive online game does. It was cheap, it was entertaining, and I got my moneys worth. I even bought copies for friends, and for some random dude on twitter.

You don't belong on forums if you can't handle someone having a handle on them.

Also where is your game? If you spent less time talking shit, and using that energy towards game dev you would absolutley have something to show. Or are you a coward and afraid to shit on gogem with your project attatched.

I feel it's the ladder, I've noticed that a lot. When the shit flinging comes on /agdg/ you'd better believe it's anonymous.

~ACTUAL GAMEDEV POST~
ive added to detective prototype the bility to lookup city records: plugin person, get residence, DOB, direct family ties.
currently this is hardcoded but following the principles of INFINITE EVIDENCE i need to make it so that i only have to hardcode relevant information and the rest can be generated.
but while generating characters/locations is all fine and good in the present text form, what happens when there's art??
i suppose i could use procedural generation for character art something similar for locations but i imagine it would end up pretty obvious when a character mattered or not based on that which would end up being a meta-tell for the player which i dont want to have.
alternatively i could have some type of limit on how deep you can search but the best i can think of is not including deceased characters, but then i might want to make a case that involves looking up deceased characters.

you're misinformed.
after they got a substantial amount of whining from professional whiners (and that whining included mentions of revenue stream they didnt have access to) they stepped up and DEMANDED i stop doing that thing that didnt give them money.
and i said no.
and then they became one of the whiners too because i said no instead of wilting and their only actual possible action was to remove the game which they dont want to do because that loses them a revenue stream.
they wouldve done it eventually if the outcry was loud and sustained enough but it wasnt so they didnt.

they have a """system""" in which you need manual approvals for tons of shit and they dont provide any sort of email contact for this stuff (or rather it's reserved for other things), instead they require you to post about it on the developer forum which they take their sweet time getting to and often needs you to bump your own requests to get noticed. I think it's a form of dominance in which they want all developers to feel a sense of humiliation whenever they have to request something by making them do it publicly.

The difference in this case is that googs made an interactive video game where you reenact a major tragedy almost immediately after it happened, and did so primarily so people would pay attention to him, whereas fiction is... well, fictional.
Remember how sensitive people were to depictions of buildings being blown up right after 9/11? Context is everything, and the context of gogem's school shooter games is not only tasteless but plainly attention whoring.

It's portraying war and violence as fun. Any game which portrays guns as fun gets a free pass, any game which is edgy gets shut out. It's not a perfect comparison, but the link is that they're both representing a tragedy, yet the more honest one gets all the flak. Why show kids how horrible taking a life feels when you could tell them that becoming a stormtrooper is fun, right?

i actually disagree with you on this.
the outrage over a shooter simulator depends entirely on who's dying.
GTA games for example always caused much outrage - it's died down in recent years but it's still there.
the reason cowadootys get a pass is because you're shooting exclusively "men" in a "combat zone".
it gets a pass based on 2 fucked up premises.... firstly that men are disposable. secondly that there's such a thing as "combat zones" that wars take place in like theyre out playing paintball or some shit... as if war doesnt stampede over innocent peoples lives.

You're giving googs too much credit. He made those games because he craves attention, no matter how negative. He made them because he knew they'd get him negative attention. He wasn't trying to make any statement beyond that, except maybe that guns are evil.

>the more honest one gets all the flak
Spec Ops: The Line and Bioshock Infinite have both gotten praise for saying WAR IS BAD.

And again, it all comes back to context. Exploiting a very recent tragedy by releasing edgy, attention-seeking garbage that doesn't even have the courtesy to be a good game is, at best, tasteless.

>Any game which portrays guns as fun gets a free pass
GTA doesnt get a pass despite it being all about the ~fun~ of killing people

for games to get the pass you have to abide by these stupid fucking tropes:
-player is the "good guy" (only a bad game would let player be a bad guy)
-men are disposable (player cannot be allowed to kill women or children, only bad guys do that)
-murder is justifiable if you're murdering bad hombres
-and for a grey area "WAR IS BAD MKAY" pass you need to always obey the previous three tropes but then question the third one after the fact

>>
>>182721378
Hence why I said it wasn't as good as 1. It sounds more like I just use the word good/great more easily than you. If I had to use other first person games I've played as a means of comparison, I'd say I liked all three metroid prime games more than bioshock infinite.

>>182721527
>>Any game which portrays guns as fun gets a free pass
>GTA doesnt get a pass despite it being all about the ~fun~ of killing people
Got me, I misspoke. A fun sandy hook simulator would get more flack than a realistic one obviously, I didn't mean to deny something like that. What I was more seriously intending to get at was more along the lines of

>-and for a grey area "WAR IS BAD MKAY" pass you need to always obey the previous three tropes but then question the third one after the fact

There's a very thin line for what you can get away with here, and it bothers me that people can't be as hamfisted as they'd really like when making these sorts of games. Any game about war or shootings that doesn't make you want to throw up could have been made better. If I could make a game that generated face meshes of the player's friends and family to create innocent bystanders, I fucking would.
>>
>>182722089
>If I could make a game that generated face meshes of the player's friends and family to create innocent bystanders, I fucking would.
do it.
>here's a very thin line for what you can get away with here
you dont get to have no controversy and also question society's morality. they get mad because that's the reaction to the mental friction of having your morality questioned effectively.
the whole "WAR IS BAD" trope is stupid and simplistic precisely because it's babyboomer approved bullshit. yeah war is bad because the government wanted you to go fight a war that one time. amazing.
>>
>>182721527
Your mentioned a "combat zone," as if that's relevant, so that you could ramble about the evils of war. You didn't mention the important part, which is that the people you shoot in Call of Duty are either terrorists or enemy soldiers and not unarmed civilians. A game about shooting civilians in Afghanistan would generate plenty of controversy, and games about killing enemy combatants outside of combat zones don't generate any.

>player cannot be allowed to kill women
You've fabricated this out of thin air. Lots of games have boss fights against women and female grunts only generate controversy when Anita is looking for another hornet's nest to kick.

>>182722089
I haven't played Metroid Prime so I can't compare.
I'd call Infinite a below-average game and would consider anything above "mediocre" to be too positive for an utterly forgettable shooter that disappears up its own ass with an unbelievably pretentious story.

>it bothers me that people can't be as hamfisted as they'd really like
That's because everyone already knows that war is bad and just repeating it over and over will only make players roll their eyes. You'd sound like Jack Thompson.
Hotline Miami did an incredible job of making the player uncomfortable and didn't get any flak for it because it wasn't hamfisted: Jacket is a homicidal psychopath who kills people just because anonymous phone calls ask him to, and the game communicates how fucked up he is without constantly jerking itself off. The absolutely brutal gameplay only feeds into this.
On the other hand, Infinite is constantly trying to say VIOLENCE IS BAD ACTUALLY but nonetheless presents you with unambiguously bad people to kill. Columbia doesn't even seem well-meaning in the way Rapture did because the game goes totally ham on racism and theocracy.
>>
>>182722734
>You didn't mention the important part, which is that the people you shoot in Call of Duty are either terrorists or enemy soldiers and not unarmed civilians
