I personally see the Bureau as "broad strokes" canon, I believe that the commander is an Ethereal but I doubt that it's specifically a male one, since they outright cut lines from the Commander in XCOM2 so that the player, no matter their gender, could project onto them. Alternatively maybe unlike in the Bureau, the Commander and Asaru are actively communicating with each other from beyond the scenes instead of Asaru mostly controlling them.

You start playing one character the entire game then when asaru leaves that one character and manifests another character and... whelp you play as that character he manifests. It is pretty on the nose. The commander is literally bonded with Asaru and that is why he is tactically capable of leading such a group.

I mean... the Elders are basically screaming at the Commander to join them and the death of them means that they are the death of everyone. The Elders know he is an Ethereal.

Also, doesn't it get confirmed in The Bureau around the time of the Asaru reveal that when he bonded with Carter it was to save both their lives? Asaru needed a host and bonding with Carter saved him from death.

Suggests to me that Ethereals need a host or to be contained/manifested in some way to survive long-term. (The one who was powering Mosaic or whatever it was called was contained/manifested in machinery designed to contain it)

The way I see it, the alien army's makeup when it comes to gender and sex is basically:

Sectoids - Clone species, either genderless or only one gender.

Mutons, and by extension Floaters/Archons - Male and female, females are more aggressive and large, possibly augmented by Ethereal race-engineering.

Chryssalids - Presumably have a model close to real life eusocial animals, with female drones and a queen. Due to how they parasitize other species with eggs, it's doubtful they have male specimens, though perhaps in their original, low-tier insect forms they had male drones like real ants.

Vipers/Thin Men - All female, used to have males, but explosive breeding and male viper dominance made it unappealign for the Elders, who neutralized the male Viper.

Cyberdiscs - As silicon-based life, it's hard to tell.

Gatekeepers - Presumably genderless, as they are just big ol genetically engineered fuck balls.

Outsiders - Presumably genderless constructs.

Codices - Female for whatever reason. Maybe it has to do with the Ethereal leader in XCOM2 presenting as female?

Faceless - Genderless blob things, probably.

Ethereals - May have had gender in the past, but their decayed bodies clearly have non nowadays.

I don't know if Portent includes any palpable links with Anette or if it's just to introduce you to EXALT in a roundabout fashion, but in the last DLC mission, the aliens are attacking an EXALT convoy to try and abduct Anette for themselves. My assumption was that EXALT and the aliens have been constantly fighting one another for control over the Furies - at one point the aliens have control over them, leading to the XCOM base assault, but she either escapes or is freed by EXALT, who seek to use her for their own ends. It was stated numerous times in interviews leading up to Enemy Within's release that EXALT and the aliens aren't working together. EXALT is a third faction with its own goals, not a group of alien collaborators. They're looking to exploit the invasion for their own ends.

They did say that Exalt had similar goals to xcom but were going about it in a radical way and were opposed to xcom.

Their base mission had loot the suggested they had been operating through history until some power struggle resulted in them being hostile to xcom and pursuing their own methods.

Maybe the Templar are exalt that were never crushed or a faction of exalt that kept hiidden.

It's not a coincidence that they have paid while the other factions do not. Even less when you realize EU exalt stops just shy of that in tech progress.

Don't forget, it's pretty much the first theme in the entire game to not have a generic "heroic" edge to it. The entire thing is tense and dark, befitting the foe you face whenever it plays.


The "Lost Theme" as i'm currently calling it, despite it probably being a general combat track, is similar, too. There's no real generic heroism undercurrent, just mounting darkness with intercuts of slight heroism, though less frantic than the Chosen theme.

I'm with the regal guy here, I feel like Ethereals are pretty sweet looking, especially in EU/EW, when they do the whole "floating around and gesturing with all four hands" stuff, they're pretty excellent looking. I know what you are saying, but i think it's unfair to not count the lost and the chosen.

That said, i don't agree either, it is a bit underwhelming that we are getting 2 more Advent guys, but mechanically speaking, the Purifer sounds good, and obviously when it comes to mechanics the Lost and the Chosen are good too, we don't really know much if anything about the Spectre but i seriously doubt his clone ability is going to be worse than mind control.

The only one i'm disappointed in is in the Priest, he looks like he was put together last minute just to have more enemies in.

You can see a little bit on him on one of the videos that came yesterday, he seems like generic psi advent guy from a mod, nothing special, he puts people into stasis and looks like a white stunlancer with a cardboard box on his face. I just wanna fight in some real big city maps, even more fun if there's fighting from building to building, shooting out of a fire escape before ducking into another building then shooting out the second floor onto a unaware advent patrol, all the while the lost are coming up the stairs.

Room clearing like some sort of Swat team in EU made me hard and defending a beacon inside a house is fun if you can get there first.

Honestly the frost bomb is the only one of the items is extremely effective but it only works effectively on the two that are so easy that they don't need the frost bomb. I find all of the alien hunter weapons to be rather useless at dealing with the hunters themselves

Alien weapons have infinite range, the only reason they don't shoot you from the other side of the map is because they have an "ideal range" that they like to get into before they shoot, you could give an advent trooper 99 ideal range and he'd shoot you with the same accuracy from across the map as if he was standing right next to you.

At least i'm pretty sure that is how they work.

Yeah but Xcom weapons have ranges, like how a shotgun will have shitty aim the further away you are from your target, and the opposite with snipers. Alien weapons don't have that, they have the same aim no matter how far away from you they are standing and their aim values are just set on their character stats.
