If you range your ranged attacks and guard breaks right, you can be unpunishable too. Shinobi is a ganker hero, like Centurion. Also, how bad are the Cent nerfs?

Do they want it to be legit competitive?
The devs in Super Smash were displeased that people kept stripping their game down to flat stages, no items, etc and pretending it was a competitive fighting game. Still, they didn't want to remove people's ability to play custom matches, because a big appeal of that game was playing with it however you wanted to. Instead, in Brawl they implemented this completely random "tripping feature," where any character would periodically just fall down while moving - DESTROYING any credibility you could pretend it had as a "fighter."
Perhaps they left revenge in duels to keep people from pretending it was the primary game mode and being so

Looks to me like he is in fact one of the taller ones. Raider is taller, lb and shug obvi are reaaally tall, but he's right under them I think. Still, armor is mostly leather and fur, so I also agree that he's probably not as heavy as a warden even. Trip and shield bash should not be fatal. Certainly not nearly as fatal as basically every other execution. Most hero's basic everyday attacks and combos should be more damaging than this.

Unlock tech is a bug that makes it so that an attack doesn't register as being aimed at you, and if it hits, it isn't added to the list of hits on the sidebar- when a normal attack comes out, you can parry while the attack indicator flashes white, an unlocked attack doesn't have this property, if you press the input for parrying, the game will think you are just throwing out a heavy, and you'll get hit during your heavy animation, that is what unlock tech is.
I'm not saying "I personally can't parry it" I'm saying that you have to block or dodge unlock tech, that's how it works and is why people use it, so your advice of "get ready to parry" would just get you hit by an unlocked move.

Oh, I get what you mean if you're getting beaten.
If you set up a custom game (no xp or rewards) against a level 3 valk bot, it's excellent practice for parrying lights, just dont attack at all other than a top heavy after a light parry, I did that on console so many times I must have spent hours getting beaten by it, but know I'm able to parry opponent's light attacks on console reliably (except PK but there's other ways to beat her).
Also brawl is a good game mode for getting good because it's not as turtle mad as duel, but you don't get ganked or gear stat raped.
