Asked in the last thread shortly before this one was made to replace it.

Does this seem like a good process for making a text adventure, since the implementation is relatively straightforward (as I'll be using and extending an existing parser rather than creating one from scratch)?

1. Write the bare bones of everything, including the puzzles, on paper, from beginning to end.
2. Implement this game skeleton so that someone doing everything right can beat the game.
3. Add detail and make everything you're "supposed" to do all nice.
4. Add all the obvious things someone could do besides this.
5. Have people playtest it without my input, getting logs of everything they tried.
6. Add interesting responses to all the things they tried.
7. Add soft background music, occasional illustrations, and so on.
>>
>>182392439
sure, but there's a reason why people stopped making text adventures and started making systems-based games instead

They didn't, though. Making and playing them is a thriving hobby, and the "Choice Of..." games, while closer to choose-your-own-adventure books/gamebooks are pretty damn popular despite selling for $4-7 a pop.

I have absolutely no idea how you people keep having hard drives fail on you.

You know, I have a hypothesis that hard drive failure correlates heavily with distance to high power cables or substations. I think the powerful electro-magnetic fields mess with the hard drive.

I've always lived in rural or semi-rural areas a significant distance from power distribution systems. So maybe that is why I've never had any fail on me.

Got some progress. Got a stamina bar working properly. Currently stamina goes down when you sprint, swim, and dodge. Stamina refuses to go up while attacking. The further down your stamina goes from the top, the longer it takes to start regenerating. There are five tiers of regeneration. If you're above 75% stamina when you stop using it, it takes 1/3rd of a second for it to start regenerating. If you're between 50% and 75%, it takes 1/2nd of a second to start regenerating. Between 25% and 50%, 2/3rds of a second. Between 0% and 25%, 5/6ths of a second to start regenerating. If stamina is drained all the way to 0, then you take the largest penalty, with it requiring 2 whole seconds to begin regenerating.

I also redid a big portion of my weapon code to ensure I could create weird weapons far easier, like I did with the whip I've posted, as that whip was more of a hack than anything else. This is why I'm back to square one in terms of sword swings.

Need your help my brothers, I'm a retard
I'm trying to make a formula for a turn based combat to give you a score based on the following two variables:

* Time it took for you to finish the battle
* Enemy grade (a number from 1 to 100, 100 being the strongest enemy in the game).

I want to show the scores as S, A, B, C and D. I'm a total pleb when it comes to math and it seems I can't get around this logic to make it balanced and working.

An example, if I'm fighting a grade 30 enemy and finish it in 60 seconds it means I might get an S. Perhaps I should through another variable into accounting? My game doesn't have levels.

Any ideas?

Can't get radio AM or FM, or free to air television. Mobile picks up the tower though.

I'm also insulated by heavy tree cover.
>>

How powerful will your game's parsing be?
>>
>>182395526
>Also (0, Pi, 0) and (-Pi, 0, -Pi) are the same rotation.
I'm aware, but the catch is that my mouse input increases the second element of that vector, so whenever I rotate halfway around, the input effectively gets reversed, bouncing me away.

Earlier I considered using quats (pretty sure you told me), but I made a camera pivot node instead and changed it's X so that the player character would always be standing upright, which let me dodge the problem for a while since the character now only had to rotate on the Y. Though I changed my parent node to a kenimatic body and the problem popped up again.

Probably all but the last one. I might add some responses to vulgar and/or sexual commands, just saying it wouldn't be appropriate under the circumstances.

Given the very compact nature of the game, I might disable compass-based movement and just have you say "enter elevator" or "go to porch" and so on.
>>
>>182395949
>2. Literally none of the Choice Of games I mentioned used text parsers
But that's the problem.
I might have bought one of them if they used text parsers.
But without a text parser, it's just a choose-your-own-adventure book.
>>
>>182395682
Whenever I need to do something like this I just fire up Desmos and start making some graphs.
I'd first normalize the data you have. So the enemy's level would be (x/100) so it's between 0 and 1.
For the time you'll have to decide how long it should take for the player to beat any enemy in the game.
>>
>>182396914
>But without a text parser, it's just a choose-your-own-adventure book.

Pulling out of my ass; rejigger the Enemy Grade so that it corresponds to how long it should take to defeat. (eg. EnemyGrade = 1 means it takes about 1 second to kill

For each encounter, calculate a number X = [TimeToComplete] / [Sum of Enemy Grade in encounter]

If X < .5, Score = S
If .5 < X < 1, Score = A

Netbeans is the comfiest by far. The repository support seems kinda shitty which is perhaps why a lot of people don't recommend it.

All the other IDEs seem really lame (ugly, unable to do basic things without wasting hours setting it up yourself, awkward UI layouts, etc) whenever I've tried them out.

Trying to do a palette swaps and I thought it was as simple as setting up my color gradient where the horizontal placement of the colors would map to the gray value in the source texture, so that every place that is Black, would get the first pixel color in the gradient, and every place that was 25,25,25 would get the color in the 25th pixel in the gradient.

Just making a game and having it become a viral success is extremely rare. I'm pretty sure even Flappy Bird bought some Chinese download/like farms or whatever to get the initial boost. So you'll need to do marketing of some kind.

As for making the game, there's nothing wrong with that. Flappy Bird was a completely fine game. If you enjoy making it, that's the most important thing. Just don't expect it to be a guaranteed hit.

You can still make a viral game, just not a minimum effort game. Here's what I would do if I were to pursue this (probably will do it sometime in 2018):
First stage: 1 month idea farm. Get a friend to help out since you need the input of another person to bounce ideas off of. Spend 10-12 hour days JUST THINKING OF IDEAS. The best ideas will come at the end of the day after you've thrown out hundreds already. Consume plenty of non-game media from a wide variety of genres and mediums. Play some games but only to see what's come before, try not to X + Y. Use standard creativity help memes. At the end of the month, get a list of 100 possible game ideas. You're looking for the perfect meme game pitch. I think it would probably have some physics and be otherwise humorous but idk yet.
Second stage: Choose an idea and execute. Spend a month on the idea. If the game is not fun after 2 weeks, drop it and choose another one from the list. If it's still fun at the end of the month, you can spend another couple months polishing. After that, ship it to steam and choose another idea. Repeat until one takes off.
>>
>>182411957
my idea is basically make ragdolls jump on your tablet.

Yes, but there are better choices these days, if your goal is complete a commercial game as quickly and efficiently as possible. Note this doesn't mean sacrificing quality, only that you are getting things done efficiently.

If your goal is to mess around as a hobbyist, who gives a fuck, do what makes you happy.

Welp, if you're wondering, I managed to fix it. Using rotate_y() managed to let me rotate all the way around, but there was still the issue of the yaw value flipping the controls around, so whenever I'm facing backwards I have to change my yaw-angle-variable from plain old "get_rotation().y" to "pi-get_rotation().y".

It seems like godot won't allow any element in the object's rotation vector be outside of the range of pi and negative pi.

Is there a more optimized way to calculate where the y should be on a tile slope?

For ascending-right slopes (that are 45 degrees), I have been using:

y = (ty*v) + ( v - ( ox - (tx*u) ) );

For ascending-left slopes (that are 45 degrees), I have been using:

y = (ty*u) + ( ox - (tx*v) ) * ( v / u );

This is what the following stuff means:
>ox: the bottom corner on the front side of the direction entity is moving
>tx: tile column
>ty: tile row
>u: tile width
>v: tile height (both u and v are 16 in this case)

They work, for their corresponding sides, and i've been playing around and haven't encountered any problems.

What I would like to do later is center the entity along the slope, so ox would become the entities x + w/2 in both scenarios; it works, but i've encountered an issue where it collides with solid tiles underneath it. The thing I have thought of doing is creating a world box that doesn't sink into the slope, and then its a simple offset from there.

I have two (45 degree) ramps that are descending left or right, and I have yet to find or come up with a formula that works for those. Is there a better formula I can use that applies to all ramps, with all the variables I have so far?

Say, /agdg/. You have a finite number of currency in a game where making money is pretty hard.

>>182423565
I DO really like the idea of a faustian bargain. It's just you need to solve the savescumming problem , and I don't think "just let them savescum" is a valid answer. It's a significant enough powerup that the correct strategy is to savescum, you're wasting players time.

You could solve this a few ways: they roll always happens the same, so you can't savescum. But then you have to decide if the seed is per game that you start, or just based on the time you start the quest. If it's the former, then the correct strat is to reroll saves. If it's the latter, just come back later to get a new seed.
>>
>>182423792
Mmm, good advice. I wanted to ask about it before I implemented it without taking everything into consideration.

XCOM 2012 has some good info on how they mitigated their randomness, info on how they combatted savescumming is in there too. It was covered pretty extensively so searching "xcom randomness" should find it.

The most devilish way I can think of is basing the seed on the the player's hardware ID + how many games the player has started. So for user A, they'll get it on playthroughs 1, 4, 7. For player B they'll get it on 2, 3 9.

Logic: reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity.

Insight: the capacity to gain an accurate and deep understanding of someone or something.

Guile: insidious cunning in attaining a goal; crafty or artful deception; duplicity.

Do you think 'guile' would fit accurately between logic and insight on a spectrum?
>>
Post tumblr / twitter / itch.io stats

Amateurs undervaluing their time. Maybe they think many cheap sales is better than a few expensive sales. (When really on asset stores, most people who will buy your asset need it badly enough that they'll buy at any price that's not completely absurd, and even then some will).

One thing I might do is save a copy of the asset at the time you buy or download, so you have proof if the asset is ever removed from the store. And read the license yourself, it's not long and it's in the unity license.

Here's some progress. Tried a new whip animation, and I added a new visual affect which should be highly versatile. Basically particles where ever I want, meaning I can make things flame or cause little sparks, or make something shine to show it's done charging up. For the whip itself, I added a little spark on the end, which you can see relatively clearly when I whip over the water.

Yeah, it can be pretty darn useful for figuring out bugs. It was also helpful in showing a commenter what they missed exactly after leaving a comment on my demo day 15 page. I also record all my dev sessions, so it's seriously a recording of my exact gamepad inputs to see what I did if I get a bug I can't seem to easily reproduce.

>>182442245
i toned down the grass after i made that webm because it was 4AM and the colour hurt my eyes

the character is supposed to stand out from the background

the way the shader works is that it finds out what percentage of an RGB value the sprite colour is and then applies that percentage to my shadow colour and then draws the sprite like that, and since my character's RGB value is larger than the RGB value i'm dividing it by it looks brighter than the shadows it's in

So, FTC does hit a few of the High Value points of the Berlin Interpretation of Roguelikes.

+ Random Generation
+ Permadeath
+- Turn-based (kind of - more of a hybrid turn/real-time system)
- Grid-based
+ Non-modal
+ Complexity
+ Resource Management
- Hack'n'slash (don't think this counts because you can't make a space ship game hack'n'slash)
+ Exploration and discovery

I hit 7/9 points on this list. Why can't I call my game a Roguelike?

I made a minesweeper game with it that had a really big grid, like 64x64, and I used a flood fill like that. It crashed if it started filling several thousand tiles.
The solution is to use a while loop to repeat the algorithm. But since you're giving it a defined depth, I guess it wouldn't be a problem.

Do you buy games others have made that are similar to yours to find things you must absolutely avoid?

I tend to look for bottom of the bargain bin stuff on sites like hrk. Some of it is just clearly lack of polish but some games demonstrate expertly how not to do things. I feel it helps.

Looking at good games doesn't always let you appreciate the terrible things in games. And I feel it also makes your game feel more like a clone. Avoidance lets you go down a more unique path.

Where's your game being on screen of a youtube video for 1 second?
>>
>>182448385
Sometimes how bad a game is isn't apparent on the screen, you have to really feel how bad it is while actually playing it. Plus you can think about all the systems at play, why did this mechanic turn out so bad? What could you change to make it feel better. I find all that easier to think about while actually playing the bad game.

Also sometimes people just say a game is bad, and don't say WHY it's bad, they just say it's overall bad. But that's not helpful.

the problem is that the game plays like shit
i assure you that time taken to arrange triangles just like you want them to because of the delusion that you're a top programmer who should be doing these things is the time taken away from learning why the game might play like shit and how to make it not play like shit
90% of freeware games made in late 90's/early 00's before the rise of the engines are complete and utter garbage because they were made by people who were poor game designers even if they might've been solid programmers

>game play is shit
If you've made games of any size you'd know the way making an involved system can improve your game. You can see where people don't do this in gameplay plain as day usually. If you're an experienced programmer it's next to impossible to think about the systems behind it and the artefacts different implementations would cause. Very good games don't have visible artefacts or make them explicit (Quake games have their strafe jumping for instance).
>performance
Sure. Not every game had performance concerns. But you see plenty of far reaching projects that simply don't perform well. Even popular genres like PUBG perform terribly when you keep in mind how well other games with very similar situations do. GTA V is a major accomplishment and outperforms these games in every aspect. But the entire survival battle Royale genre is so far behind. It's because they don't have engine devs. You will find that a lot of games are scaled back from their potential due to stuff like this.
But of course. Every game doesn't have performance concerns to speak of. But games that aspire often do.
>>182450202

I only know about the "too big for a first project" one.
>>
>>182451847
They're even objectively wrong in some cases. I remember watching an episode with Firefall on it (they had devs sponsor the episode) and they presented misleading information and made a completely wrong analysis compared to feedback from players.

Basically ruined the crafting system because it was too confusing. But now it's just straight up bland. Horrible.
>>
>>182452642
I dunno if this is a common pitfall but an issue I have a lot of is switching projects all the time
>>
>>182450661
you seem to think elastic gameplay systems are completely unachievable outside of rolling out your own technology, which just isn't true in the age where engines allow you to use actual languages like c++ or c#
secondly while there are certain very performance-demanding kinds of games that need thousands of entities active at once and benefit from lower level control, it hardly justifies the claim that "market is polluted by people like sjws and money-hunting pajeets who don't understand games, so people who also might not even understand what makes a game fun but understand how to use programming patterns to create a system that can handle a game and can arrange patterned triangles on the screen in an optimized way work against it"
>>
>>182452213
>it's not even a programming issue, its more of a logic conflict
What's the difference here? I'm a logician (I guess? I work in a philosophy department, and calling myself a philosopher sounds gay) who does dev stuff on the side and I don't get what you mean by this. You mean it's like a design issue rather than a programming issue?
>>
>>182392439
Thanks doc.
>>
>>182452236
>perfectly fine
I'd say the problematic case is the norm. Even Epic themselves have issues with making Unreal tournament run well. And they aren't even pulling out the good art yet.
>if an engine dev did that it'd fix it
No not exactly. An engine dev would be more aware of the bounds he's working in and the tradeoffs that are being made. With people who just use engines they toggle the switches without understanding at all.
>but you have an options menu
It's not that simple anon and you should know that. That's the issue here.
>>
>>182452642
if its for a not prototype game, not planning ahead like building something that can't have things added later on this is something i really walked into.
>>
>>182452213
Come back to it later. Or try to do it in another way while keeping the old version in case it doesn't work.

>>182452642

>>
>>182452514
Oh right, this is just so amazingly helpful, look at this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7daTGyVZ60I

How else would I know that I can make an attack after jumping a more powerful attack if he didn't show me how it was done in Psychonauts?

Extra Credits use examples too by the way, and they are just as useful.
>>
>>182452883
>elastic systems
Not sure what you mean by this.
>that quote
I hope all of it was a strawman. I'd never ever suggest someone use design patterns.

And again. I wasn't even complaining about performance primarily. The problem is lack of understanding which stems from people adapting themselves to the solutions that exist.

And OF COURSE you can make something great in something like Unreal. But you have to appreciate the extra difficulty in making it work when using their engines. There's A LOT of stuff that interoperates in a game engine made for general games.
>>

it gives a feeling of weight to the player character since you are no longer moving the environment around the player but the player is moving in the environment

to be fair in some games you would want to camera to actually outpace the character a bit and get ahead but in this wide top down view its probably best to just lag behind a bit

i dont care about clicking on things because 2d mouse games are already an abomination

Yeah, I'm pretty upset. I didn't give him money to work on this lizard game, I gave him money for Bokube to be finished.

If he has left over money after releasing Bokube, that's completely fine. But it's not released yet.

Boku you are just messing around for a breather and are going to wait until you actually finish bokube before continuing work on these other games right? You're going to stop this before your backers start catching on or thinking you're working on another game, right?
>>
>>182458419
Because he's not working on Bokube. There's a non-zero chance that he just drops Bokube and works on this. I've seen plenty of kickstarters. Boku is on a bad path right now.

>>

>Boku is on a bad path right now.
He's openly posting progress on this other game he showed us as bokudev (not another persona or identity)
earlier he could have just denied it was him or with that FPS game... not now.

So right now is the time for him to snap out of it and pretend he was just messing around. If he starts stubbornly working on another game thinking it's cool and people will be impressed more than angry he deserves what's coming.
>>
>>182458031
5k cant even pay the salary of a single programmer for 1 month
>>
>>182458676
The tongue is controlled by the player though like the original chameleons twist?

I think that would make sense if the tongue auto targeted poles and stuff but its not suppose to if its a sequel to the old game

$5k is more than just two months of salary. It's how much I get for two semesters at the uni. And you don't need to live in a city to dev a game.
It's more than enough for 4 months if you know how to spend your money.

Besides >>182458759 is right, if he delivers his kickstarted game, there's no issue with him fucking around with other projects.

How do you... make something move in a circle? Hear me out:

I get how to manipulate movement and direction and things like that but how can I make something do a shape without a significant amount of trial and error? I realize this is likely a retarded question.

Since the latest public build I added custom physics, because box2d was a shit.

Picture is a result of my physics engine simulation. Link is proof that I replicate the real world. Same domain wall errors and point errors. I'm using the same math as the Universe. Isn't it exciting?

Working two jobs will get you fired from many places, because it shows no loyalty to the person paying you.

By posting progress on another game while still having physical cash from other people in his pocket Bokube has crossed a line. The best thing he can do now is pretend he was just messing around.

You do realize many studios work on two games or more at once to meet deadlines? If you look at his twitter too hes been posting daily updates for bokube but not chameleons twist on twitter.

You can't, it's impossible. Just guess where the next spot will be on the circle. Alternatively, assume it's a square and just jitter it off a bit.
