I dont have enough time anymore, and probably still wont have for almost a decade. So i decided to make the entire game with very lazy and rough pixel art. It was quite hard giving up on the fancy pixel assets i had done before, but if i kept that id never finish it. Also had to make the game a lot more static and strategy based. Here's some progress. Easily scaled up to 4 players, then started making a basic GUI. Got health working in that regard, at least for test purposes.

Here's some progress:
Scoring system added
Score, wave and lives are now being displayed on screen
Added a Game Over screen
Enemies can shoot bullets at the player now
Enemy speed and their projectile speed increases based on wave number
Added and edited some sprites
Added some sound effects
Started utilizing screen shake effect for various events
Player can destroy enemy bullets
Added an overheat mechanic, but removed it afterwards as it hampered the gameplay
Removed the rocket in its current state as it was ineffective
Actually had fun devving and playing the game.

I know this is basic stuff, but I'm really looking forward to adding new things and exploring potential mechanics.

You have to tune the restrictiveness of the theme to the size of the audience. Agdg jams are open because there are around 150 devs here at a time, so the difference between 5% and 10% joining a jam matters.

Really liking your work anon, you've been showing off some neat and fun stuff.
Though as others have said, it would've been really cool if it was its own game rather then a mod, it can still be an amazing mod as well. Either way it looks like something I'd want to play. Just keep working on it and stay motivated.

I genuinely want to make a test map/hub world based off the dark space from illusion of Gaia, honestly. Where the player can spawn monsters to test out weapons and equipment.

One day though, I want to revisit GMOTA and make it into a standalone overhead game that'd play like a cross between smash TV and Doom, just with more melee. But I also want to make some games with the characters I'm making here. That's the plan after I finish up GMOTA.

Is having 3 different boards the player needs to pay attention to too much? I've long admired Sting Entertainment's highly complex off the wall strategy titles such as Knights in the Nightmare and Yggdra Union and wanted to go for a similar "what the fuck are you doing what even is this game" effect but I fear that I've crossed a fatal complexity threshold to the land of "you need to have autism to play this". Finished up the Fist weapon attack strings in their entirety; the animations are all in place, the branch/string connection points are all implemented and tuned. Next up, more work on the sword attack sets, and a few basic fist-set weapons to make use of the strings.

Also more work on 2D stuff; I've now settled on a way of doing behind-the-wall slices like this one here (I'm currently trying to add more branching paths and optional routes to the first level, especially ones that you can't complete without later movement upgrades) which involves dissolving walls. Enemies can now be locked to the 2D plane, and their behaviors can change as a result (Little Skulls won't attempt to sidestep left and right, they'll step back and forward instead).

World 1's drawbridge levers can now also be melee attacked as well as shot. In implementing that, put in the bones of a modular damage-taking system (it's not as robust as what the enemy class does, but it lets any object implement the ability to hear damage messages from Dixie for this sort of interaction prompt).

Also finally fixed some bugs with wallrunning that would cause it to stop and start over and over on certain corners or steep slopes.

It is framerate independent so it works better for controls and physics.

If you apply physics and controls in Update you are letting the framerate dictate behavior which causes things to misfire.

Encountered this issue with timed explosions and custom jumping.

What does /agdg/ think about buying one of those premade GameMaker engines? I'm an art/story/music guy with zero programming skills and as far as gameplay goes all I need are just the basic 2D platformer essentials, so why not just tweak what someone more skilled has already created?

A couple of anons pointed out that for a night scene not using any bright blue was criminal, so I wanted to make room for some of them.
At the same time some people had commented on how much they liked the old palette so I tried to keep most colors from it.

It's weird if you're not familiar with the engine, but that's actually how Input.GetAxis works.

Basically it makes a virtual axis that's a float between -1 and 1, defaults to 0. Pressing the positive button increases the value up to 1, pressing the negative button decreases it to -1. You can set these buttons in the input manager.

The default Unity's axis called "Horizontal" is already set to detect right and left keys as its positive and negative buttons, it even has A and D set as alternatives so that works too.

The reason why this is the better way of doing things than Input.GetButton is that it natively supports controllers (pushing an analog stick halfway you can get something like 0.5 on the axis), and it's really easy to rebind. In fact if you leave the bootup dialog on you technically don't need a rebind menu since it comes with its own where the end user can directly change the input axes with no extra work necessary on your part.

The minimap only shows exits if the respective door was found (webm related).
Once a room is cleared all doors are revealed, so if the player wants to clear a room and then leave this system changes nothing compared to how it was before; but dashing through a room now requires finding the right exit first.

I had alternative-paths on a few levels I was working on where the player could drift left or right. It wasn't the hardest thing in the world to implement but I sure as fuck do not want to go through that headache again. My backup is about 4-5 builds old. It's from December of last year. I'm done, I'll just make 2-3 more tracks but that's it. No more implementing new features, this game makes me physically ill.

Do the latter.

Build a very simple game. Come up with an idea. Coming up with ideas is part of the process.

Then build that game. Where to start? well it somewhat depends on the game but not really. You'll probably want a main menu

So make a level or menu or however that shit works for unity, have 4 buttons, one quits the game, one options, one new game, one continue game (or however you want your menu)

Then make new game load a new map that will be your tutorial/first level.

Next you'll probably want some sort of camera. So figure that out. Maybe make it able to move if that applies to your game.

Next you probably want some kind of character or unit or something. Figure out how to do that. etc

You don't have to follow my instructions 100%. That's not really the point. The point is to figure out what you want to make in a basic sense, and then make it. How do you actually make it? break it down to the smallest piece. Then research how to build that piece.

Implemented a bunch of small features, such as player HP and stamina, as well as vertical camera movement.

Blocking (holding the shield up) depletes stamina constantly, and blocking attacks also requires a chunk of stamina (as do attacks themselves). Blocking enemies’ attacks also stuns the enemy for a brief moment.

Tried adding gold drops when killing enemies, but apparently forgot to change the gold instance’s sprite. Now I need to make an enemy that spawns more enemies upon death.

A first person arena FFA game where everyone is playing in a first person arena shooter except for one random player each match who gets a top down perspective. The top down player is tasked with making sure one specific player, the "chosen one", survives the match. The top down player can put down hazards, AI-controlled monsters, upgrades, walls and buildings and more. Neither the "chosen one" nor the regular players know who the chosen one is, and the top-down player can't communicate to the others, so it's a game of trying to figure out who the "chosen one" is as much as it is a FFA where both surviving and killing the "chosen one" counts towards your end score.

Having a little bit of fun with the Citrus collectible; to avoid having these just be fundamentally the same experience as the feed bags (which is find them, grab them, move on), when you "pick" them from the trees they fall as physics objects and you have to then go grab them as they roll away.

This started as a visual gimmick but it quickly became a very elaborate and fun gameplay thing to deal with since three of the five trees are on cliff faces overlooking more dangerous environs and it can become a pretty interesting pursuit. I had to add rudimentary buoyancy since potentially two of the oranges can find their way into the main lake if you knock them off the tree the right way.

FL Studio is nice to learn. You can use the demo which doesn't have any time limits, until you wanna save a track.

I hear that REAPER is also reasonably priced and has a lot of material to cover up on how to use it.
