You don't need foresight to complete games. You need certitude and plans. If just you wanted to play around with an idea, that's fine, but if you thought that idea will give you a whole game, then you are wrong.

Don't mask failure as something that is not. Errors and mistakes are needed, but make them count.

Doing some tests with a state machine implementation, i made each state into a separate object/component, the parent object hold all states but only updates the current active one.
switching happen via signals to keep everything separated, a state never knows about other states and only need to receive a signal from the parent to activate and it can force it to send a signal, now i don't even need flags and tons of if statements to check for every little detail.
everything is clean now but turning what used to be a single object into an aggregation of objects would cut performance even by a small amount, well, i won't have to worry about it for a 2d game with few active enemies at once, but it really makes me think, is a clean and comfy code worth the the price of performance?

You know what, I should rephrase my statement. Game dev is a continuous journey and there's always going to be something to learn/improve upon. What I meant by my original statement is that one should learn small individual things until their knowledge is substantial enough that they can create a full project. Once you've done that, then you can move on to the next game and repeat the process.

Of course, this is all pretty subjective. You might "not suck" at making a particular kind of game, but your knowledge/skill may be lacking in another genre. And either way, of course different people will have different views on your abilities. Just look at how different people view the same developer, for example.

So no, I can't name someone who has mastered all aspects of game dev/design, and I believe no one ever will truly master all aspects. But that doesn't mean that we can't git gud through deliberate, smart practice.

nodevs are the only ones that have dreamgames and if they work on a dreamgame its their first project and if they finish their dreamgame it took them multiple years and was mediocre at best.
ideas you have before youre a yesdev are generic shit ideas that only a nodev would consider worth existing.

if you have a "dreamgame" still in your ideas folder go have a read of it and tell me it isnt the most generic trash in your entire ideas folder. proceed with deleting it.

Anyone here familiar with GMS know the performance difference between making a collision event vs checking in the step event?

If you're making this on a computer instead of with cardboard, you can control the randomness and ensure that a certain number of cards for each strategy always show up. There's also unexplored space where you have fixed piles like dominion but can affect them like in ascension. Or you could even have the piles on the table have some spatial gameplay too.

How historically based does the setting need to be?

One way to get several families ruling the same place is to have some valuable resource that the town sits on top of, such as a mine, a trading route choke point, etc. Then several families would all be bargaining for a seat at the table and would make sure to ally themselves against any one family that was getting too powerful.

The thing is, as expected, those are mechanics that would fit in a strategy, but I want to go with a third person or top-down approach, where the gameplay feels a bit like Thief/AC/Hitman and similar games in that you have to locate your targets, follow their moves and kill/kidnap at the right time, and like in Thief, sneak inside of their houses and set them up some murder evidence.

And then similar to Behold in a way that you gather information about those people by spying and using information about their future locations, relationships between them and such, to your advantage.

people love these in a 2D fighter:
- Cool characters and cool movesets, don't go to animu, some people hate anime shit, better go for traditional real life martial arts with a bit original twist
- Balanced design, fighters are nothing more than rock paper scissors, have multiple layers, like block beat attack, attack beat grab, grab beat block, and so on.
- Some people like combos, others not, better make it about short combos, like street fighter.
- Waifus, some guys like fighting games for the waifus.
- Online, after all is a versus game, but people play offline if they take seriously your game.
- Some interesting twist.

a personal advice, even if the genre uses arcade inputs, pls don't add them, you will lose the casual market, most fighters are niche enough and you need casual fanbase if you wanna make it, because the fgc don't play anything that isn't capcom made, so don't catter to them.

So, maybe you can make a 2D fighter mixing a traditional 2D fighter action but seek inspiration from smash clones (smash, the sony smash clone, rivals of aethers, the one piece DBZ naruto ps2 smash clone "DON", some digimon fighter for GBA), the naruto fighters, the castlevania fighting game.

There's a shonen jump DS fighter that was pretty popular I remember, you maybe should check it out for ideas in terms of story mode and single player.

There's also the Dysidia final fantasy fighters, and you should also check out the Tales of series of RPG, like that PSP one that has PvP.

You could revolutionaze the genre by simply not forgetting to add a PvE mode.

I just finished making this town and now just need to populate it.

There's gonna be a couple scummy merchants. One of them is gonna have a weapon that's pretty good for that part of the game but he'll horribly overprice it.

The main gimmick of my game is how the class of your party members can influence npc and world interactions, so if someone in your party is the merchant class you can attempt to haggle for a more reasonable price and you can get a nice advantage with that weapon.

I also want to do something with the Dancer class but haven't really thought of any details.

Finally got around to coding the ability for players to map their own keys.

When the numbers disappear at the end, I'm using arrow keys on player 2, but they don't get written into the string in the draw function. They still work though.

Also if the guy I talked to about how the enemies should be killed is here, I want you to know that I'm absolutely continuing with the game mechanic of having to follow-up your attack instead of one-hit kills, but I don't like how the "burn symbols into monster" aesthetic plays, it doesn't seem super visible in first draft and I'm gonna go with having a rune appear above the enemies body instead. Still, I'm actually excited about some opportunities that the mechanic gives me and just want to say thanks for the brainstorm.

Also, if anyone knows any good tutorials on how to do backgrounds I'd like to read up.

Tekken, for one. You can side step, and microspace with the back and forward dashes. But smash melee and project M are the best examples. Wave dashes for microspacing, wavelanding of platforms, into ledge grabs, short hops, full hops, there are just a lot of ways to control space around you and throw out hitboxes. It's why people like it so much, and part of why people complain about the newer ones, is they remove a lot of the ways to move around. Turns into just trying to guess air dodge or jump out, or hit with a raw move until you get them high enough to back throw kill.

Rolling is pretty much done now, added the missing frames and fixed the animation a tee bit.

I've tried box colliders, circles (those just fucking roll), a pentagon polygon collider, and combinations of all of the above. It just flips over once it hits a slight ledge.

I've even cranked up gravity (I wrongly assumed that would make flipping more difficult) and mass and it didn't change shit.
