Personally I can't say Rewrite was awful. I give points for Key to go in a pretty unique direction with the story compared to their other VNs and it has interesting production values. I say interesting because of the UI (any game that has the UI be affected by parts of the story deserves some points) and half the CGs look really good.
As for the story, I really like certain aspects of Rewrite. It has my favorite Common route in anything and the characters are pretty well utilized. However my criticisms of it come to the routes. I like about half the routes in Rewrite, namely Kotori, Akane and Moon. Chihaya and Terra are just okay (Terra is really disappointing due to the lack of CGs which for a "Final route" and for the scale it had is really annoying). Lucia and Shizuru are shit. Lucia's was actually painful because it's pretty good for half of it and then careens off a cliff

Reinhard's character is a reference to the chuunibyou trope. I'm pretty everyone has gone through this phase at least once.
Basically, chuunibyou is a "disease" of sorts which manifests in 14 year old kids. Usually, these kids find the world around them unbearably boring because it's all so simple and easy. They think that all they have to do is "try" and they'll be able to accomplish anything in this world, and that they actually have great potential within them. They're also edgy little shits who hate everyone and everything.
Reinhard is a realisation of these aspects. He finds the world around him incredibly boring, but it's because he can actually achieve anything he wants, unlike delusional 14 year olds. Reinhard actually does have unlimited potential and power, and once Mercurius reveals it, he realizes that he loves everything, and that this world simply isn't enough for him. So he decides that he shall ravage the cosmos and whatever.
