I think the thing I dislike the most about Brogue is that you'll be forced to make a decision where there is a correct and incorrect answer, only once you figure out that your answer was wrong, you won't have enough food to change your decision and you'll be locked in this really uncomfortable situation where you have to keep playing knowing that you picked the wrong thing two hours ago.

It doesn't help that the enchantment pseudo-refund opportunity is almost always going to be too far away from the decision you wish you made to use it properly.

The most idiotic thing about Brogue is monsters respawning.

Game has limited resources, monsters don't drop shit, you can't grind for xp and has a tight hunger clock. Why the fuck do monsters respawn?

Ally empowering is a trash mechanic, and the game really goes on for too long, too. Should have like 33% less floors or so.

I think that's all the major apparent flaws with Brogue. Vaults and shit require a deeper look.

So I actually faulted this game when reorganizing my wand inventory by forgetting to take out a teleport and invis wand like usual. I walked down a staircase to GC6 and ended up right beside a freshly spawned Veteran Kamikaze Dwarf.

I actually died for three separate reasons:
>I forgot that there was a gunpowder bag on the staircase last time I left the floor and didn't ascend to take the blast on the floor above
>I didn't have a teleport wand out
>I did not Invis myself before I walked down the staircase

and the major fourth reason:

BUT ON THE OTHER HAND

I'm in the process of designing a cyberpunk roguelike. What kind of features would you guys like to see in it? So far I have in my scratch list:

- Top-down, tile & turn-based, i.e. classic roguelike style
- Procedural cities, streets, buildings, corporations
- Local economies, all city property must be owned by a corporation that exists in a trade or war relationship with other corporations
- Biology-based combat, you don't have HP, you die when blood pressure in your brain becomes abnormal
- No XP or leveling, character progression is done through cybernetics/augments
- Powerups are procedurally generated drugs (chemical effects on your character's body cause random things)
- In true dystopian fashion, the goal of the game is to get as much money as possible while screwing everyone else over

Settings I'm looking at:
- The street: Interaction with street gangs, skate punks, drug dealers, pimps & prostitutes, bioengineered mutants, and other seedy futuristic street denizens
- The corporations: You can visit to conduct a legitimate business deal, or just infiltrate to steal and hack things
- The "jungle": Densely populated urban areas where humans are heavily packed in, mostly controlled by violent gangs
- The catacombs: Creepy sewers and tunnels inhabited by mutants and monsters
- The matrix: a separate graph-based game mode primarily used for information gathering, and occasionally hacking and infecting other computers

Does all of that sound fun? Anything else cool that I should try to do with it? I figure realistically, I can get maybe a few of these done in a reasonable amount of time to launch an alpha version, and then after that I'll see what features people are most excited about. Pic related, a mockup I threw together. I don't know if I will end up using these tiles, but it's fun to give it at least some rudimentary art.

That and searching. (Granted, searching in Brogue is less painful than in a majority of roguelikes, but it's still unpleasant.)

The dev should either get rid of light levels entirely, restrict them to '1 step away from light source OR unlit', or remove that beautiful color variation in dungeon floor tiles for the sake of light readability.

Also fuck the whole stealth range shit and obscure monster "scent". I don't want to play the whole game with that gross orange overlay, this stuff should work with LoS or something. Or at least make the stealth overlay prettier and permanently on.

I definitely won't use the Shadowrun combat/mission system, I agree that it's kinda boring. The biochemical stuff is definitely what I want to flesh out more, in particular, there SHOULD absolutely be viruses and diseases and vaccines that the player has to discover. If I get time I want to make "research lab" another setting.

On the topic of AI, the way I'm writing it everything should be governed by an economic simulation. So if for whatever reason an allied NPC calculates that you aren't making it money anymore, it will turn on you. I won't have to program this in specifically either, it should just work. And yes, they should have all the same capabilities as the player.

Searching is kind of a tough one to fix. I would be fine with no secret doors/rooms, Brogue isn't Doom

Traps, though. You could make it so you only get a roll to find them when you first spot the tile, but I think that makes it so you will maybe stumble on it and nerfs hard leading enemies into them

You can disable color effects but it's broken on Windows, pender is a macfag.

And yeah, scent is bad. A stealth build gets no penalty for being spotted, they just stop moving for a turn and enemies go back to wandering. Meanwhile heavy armor dudes will never ever lose enemies.

In all seriousness I wish there was a roguelike with decent tiles that didn't look like shit. Crawl does not look good either btw, it looks okay, but a lot of times text looks better.

Maybe the way to go is make walls and environment more realistic and enemies can still be text. Text looks better IMO but gradient lighting is hard with pure text.

I've actually got this planned in case I ever make my own roguelike.

From my design doc:

But next floor you will have your inventory full and you will need to quaff id, and you'll find a strenght pot in your inventory.

By the way, a highly enchanted telecharm can be very, very powerful, if you want to follow that route.

The sword would be the more comfortable choice for a beginner. But it's up to you. The horrible anxiety of deciding what to enchant is a big part of brogue

Enchanting charms reduces the cooldown and makes the effect more powerful. On telecharm, only the cooldown is affected, however.

And rebalance the game how? Brogue isn't NetHack, you don't have as much choices in general. Removing a whole strategy will have an impact in the game. The removal of ally XPXP had already made a lot of seeds straight up unwinnable in the past.

Plus you need to remove quite a few items too. Domination, empowerment, staff of healing, staff of proteciton.

Yellow/acid is kind of pointless, especially since rCorr is neither super-necessary for the game nor very useful as a resist anyway. The breath isn't utterly terrible, but it's nowhere near the best breath.

Black/elec is probably second worst, just because it has the worst breath attack by far. But rElec is dope, as is permaflight.

Yes but if you turn them on, the turrets will shoot at you, so you have to line up, pull the curtain over the window and drive forward.

All I really wanted was to get rid of the turrets and get the loot, but I probably destroyed it all hitting the turret that got knocked between the buildings (which is narrower than the apc). Some of the plating got destroyed on the front, but all the important bits are fine.

I don't know if that would help, anon. Are you making a lot of noise? That will draw a crowd.

I used to do chars who spawned inside a house in the city, with high Z spawn rates meaning the city was crawling. I couldn't get out of the city until nightfall and had to stealthily close windows and try to avoid notice -- the trick to it was to stay indoors somewhere away from windows and doors, and basically sit tight and quietly wait for darkness. Line of sight is your enemy, they will beeline for you if they can see you.
Scent is a secondary problem, but as long as you keep near the center of the building it shouldn't be too likely to lure one in.

In your case, I imagine you're spawning with Zeds in full view, so hiding isn't an option. I'd suggest making a run for it, zigzagging between buildings to slow down pursuers. Every turn they spend banging on a wall slows them down and causes other zombies to come towards them instead of you.
Also manage your stamina and remember " to run when you're in trouble. If you're wearing anything very cumbersome on your legs or feet, strip that crap off and just bolt for it, butt naked if need be. Faster you are, the better.

Thing is, I figured out a lot of that stuff, but it had to have been scent that fucked me this time, because I sincerely doubt they would have taken 8 hours of sleeping to find me in a fully blacked out house otherwise. I literally had a brute come knocking on my door at 5 am like the world's most smelly, roided Jehova's witness.

The real thing that feels like it's a pain in the ass if if I did wait for nightfall, where would I go? I always start in snow/rain with heavy wind and I'd freeze solid if I don't have shelter, so I often have been trying to quietly shelter in place, reinforcing the house and preparing to use the cover of night to scavenge, though usually I'm tired around that time.

In a nutshell: I get eaten or I freeze, how do I prevent both?

At night I'd suggest at least moving to a house on the edge of town, where you're less likely to get hulked. Stay off the roads where possible, travel behind the houses, there will be fewer monsters.
Sooner or later you need to make yourself a wood or bone needle, or find a sewing kit, and start grinding your tailoring, because it's a lifesaver in winter.

If you're feeling brave, grab a blanket and run out of town just before dawn. When you get clear of zombies you can wrap the towel around you for warmth -- it'll slow you down a lot, but it beats freezing. All you need to do is find a gas station or a motel or a campground or something out there, even a parked car will provide a little shelter from the cold. Then you can start putting a base together and building your skills. I think More Survival Tools mod has a recipe for building your own shelter from Pine Boughs -- I've never needed to use it but I've seen it in the past few games I played.
Just stay clear of towns as much as possible. Raid them at night and try to exit from the sides so any zombies who follow your scent out of town will be pointed away from your base. They're stupid, they'll often just keep going.

It also helps to switch what towns you hit, and take a break between runs, because going to one spot over and over will strengthen your scent trail and you'll start to get a few neighbors come knocking once in a while.

Also take a peek at any cars you see, all you need is one working car and you can be way gone in no time. Especially if you fill a gallon jug with gasoline and fill it up before your start driving. Also bear in mind you only need a wrench (or makeshift equivalent) to swap a dead battery out.

Turns are the direct metric by which your score is determined.

In DCSS there are 6 main things a player's ability can be judged on, or a combo's viability.

Winning alone isn't really a huge deal for an experienced player who could probably win a Hill Orc wanderer without any god, and when you assess the potential of a god you have to compare it to everything else you could have done, you have to consider the opportunity costs.

High invocations Recite is basically Mass Confusion (at worst) against all intelligent enemies. It can also insta-kill wights, and do lots of fun stuff against demons/shapeshifters/undead.

Vitalization makes you immune to poison (not resistant, IMMUNE, this is important), and prevents Confuse, Sickness, Rot, Stat Drain (this is pretty major in Tomb and Abyss), and Petrify (it will stop you from petrifying if you're already stiffening). It ALSO increases your stats y 1/3 invos, so by the end game that's like a ring of +9 to all stats that you can basically use all the time. Vitalization is cheap as hell and you can use it in every hard encounter just for the stat boost if you want to, and stack it with Might or Agi or Berserk pots or whatever you want.

Recite is something you can use every single time you see almost any monster except for animals with natural holiness. So all humanoids, all demons, all undead, all chaotic beings like abyss creatures, and especially all enemy priest type enemies like Orc priests, Elf Priests, Mummy Priests, Troll Shamans, etc. etc. The shit it does is actually ridiculous at even a modest investment to invocations, causing confusion, corona, paralysis, PERMANENTLY burning the eyes out of their head, Sleep, Daze, Fear, Muteness, Insanity, or just fucking instantly turning them into a pillar of salt and killing them. This basically wrecks everything that could even think of smiting you and lets you walk up and disembowel them while they wander around completely fucked up in every way. Recite costs NOTHING and can be used every encounter with a cheap and short cooldown.

If that wasn't enough, sanctuary lets you completely protect yourself from all harm while you sit there and heal/cure yourself back to full.

And then when you want to do the hells you can just switch to TSO at no penalty, keeping half of your built up piety. You could even do so just to get a holy wrath weapon and then switch back, no problem.

They're at an experimental stage, but you can play with 'em right now. There's some deep structural stuff that needs to be de-spaghettied and reworked before further progress can happen, but it's being done bit by bit. Progress is slow, but it'll happen.

at least a cloak and a ring at all times. if you happen to be near a spawned mine (which can be undetected, and also come in a "BIG" variety,) or pack of gunpowder it increases the threshold even higher and you'll probably die even then unless you wear an amulet of life saving or elemental protection

it's basically assumed that you will get telecontrol midgame by eating a certain enemy in large quantity, and then keep a wand of teleport in your inventory at all times to move yourself to safety

but then explosions will set off explosives and wands in your inventory unless they're inside a box, and there are wizards and stuff that can smite you with electricity which could fry your dick and kill you or cripple/dismember your limbs, and the worst thing of all is the ones that have the same effect as a wand of striking, which shatters items like potions and wands and explosives and can break your equips, so you could find yourself very quickly running low on teleport wands unless you reach the intelligence event horizon and get ESP to see the bastards coming before you're in direct danger

I can't speak to your tastes, but I think CDDA is the better survival game. If you plan on the wilderness survival angle, you might want to switch on Classic Zombies mode in mapgen, though, so you don't get destroyed by zombears and antlered horrors in the outdoors early on. Later on you can handle those things, but an early game character that runs into a zombear had better hope there something around to distract it with.

It's very repetitive. The game is effectively just "killkillkillkillkillkillkill....killkill....killkillkill...get rune...new branch...killkillkillkillkill", with very little interruption.

In other games, not killing is actually a viable strategy. More importantly, your goal may be "find specific loot, which drops from specific enemies".

IMO, the repetition in Crawl wouldn't be a bad thing if the game were shorter. But at its current length, it could use some things to break up the action. It's one of the few cases where "lmao crawldevs are better game designers than you ~_~ xDDDD" is clearly false. Buying things doesn't quite cut it, since getting money is based on RNG if you're not a Gozag follower.

If you're speedrunning and you have shit luck with weapon/armour, you'll have to do it straight after orc, if you want to save turns.(You'll most likely die though)

Otherwise, I just do it after vaults/depths, if I need some extra xp or resists.

Son of a bitch. After my broken cyborg monster died an ignominious death in the lab yesterday at the hands of skitterbots, I decided to do a proper cyborg and cooked up Evelynn Frost, a Razorgirl who spawned in a bookstore in the middle of town.
Things were going great for a while. I murdered a ton of zombies, including two brutes, and got out of the starting town and started hoofing it down the road, only lightly wounded.
Then I ran into a Mi-go, and kicked its ass, suffering modest wounds and feeling pretty badass. The thing's pet kreck was a pain though, because they're so damn hard to hit, but it went down after tearing her tank top and doing a little more damage.
By then she's starting to get cold what with the torn clothes, but still looking okay, when further south down the road what does she run into, but TWO Mi-gos, and about three krecks. Really awful luck, I guess.

So she runs like hell, as fast as she can due to cold and pain, traipses through the forest and loses all but one Mi-Go.
I fucked up at this point and failed to realize I was carrying a hammer and not using her built in razors and martial arts. I drove the Mi-Go off with it, but was terribly wounded by the end of the battle. Serious fuckup on my part.

She's crawled off into the woods with both arms broken, and in desperation just decided to try to hide there for the night, cold be damned.
It was going okay, but then along comes a goddamned angry territorial moose, so it looks like this is the end. He's chasing a cat for now, but it looks pretty certain that Ms. Frost is next.

This is not going all that well.

Actually she just made it.

She ran from the Moose, and it went after a bee, and chased her towards some webs, where it engaged the angry web spider. When it got to her it was weakened and maybe poisoned, and she sliced and diced it with ease.

I lack the survival skill, this is day 1 and I haven't had time to build it yet. She's about halfway there, but her focus is 3 so there's really no hope of upping any skills right now.

It was midday when I started hiking. The speed penalties from cold and pain stacked up pretty fast, and after the Mi-go ripped her up she was practically crawling.
