Eh? You do quests and that gives you master exp, then you level up.

You also get experience for your equipped outfit (which increases the effectiveness and cooldown of you spells) so you might be confusing your master level with that.

Characters level up by being given exp cards, they also level up their bond levels but those are separate and unlock quests related to the servant and eventually a craft essence.

Is it fine to skip all story and just play for the battles?

I like Shinjuku's gimmick of censoring certain servants' names and forcing you to play the story to learn their names and shit. It makes introducing the servants more interesting rather than having the datamine spoil it. It should return whenever new content with new servants arrive as it is a cute reference to the idea in a Grail War to keeping a servant's name hidden to conceal their abilities and weaknesses.

So should I farm EXP for my Carmilla or just play the story?
