It largely depends on the AAR. Some, like the CK2 AAR, obviously used primarily unhistoric characters so all I really needed to do was include some degree of period knowledge and flavor, which I had already. For more modern AARs which include real historical figures, I primarily just use Wikipedia and my own knowledge. When I need to pull a socialist out of my ass for this AAR, for example, I'll frequently just look around for communist groups in Britain, or examine the Labour ministries of the 20s to see who was big in the party at that time. Then I extrapolate the changes in mindset they might have had in this timeline. That might be true, but also keep in mind that there's been a mass exodus of people from Europe thanks to all the communizing. Even far-west zones like Seattle, Portland, and even Boise have almost 150,000 POPs, which is ludicrous even for a typical US. Everything I've done this game has basically turned them into a raid boss, with a huge population and a massive amount of soldiers. We'll see if that translates into combat effectiveness, of course, but I at least expect that their mobilized numbers will be horrifying.

It might be interesting for a little while, and perhaps the narrative, but it would be a total bore for me and for most people once it really got going. My opinion bonus would be so high with everyone that I would never be threatened by rebellion and could raise an absolutely inane amount of troops for foreign wars, so I would probably blob eventually even if I tried not to. And if I tried not to then most of the game would be me just sitting there.

If/when I return to CK2, I intend to do a run which is much more challenging even than Jerusalem was this last time, something which suggests probable reverses and maybe even failure. I want to keep it challenging for as long as possible.

Have the CSA form up not at war with the US, and then have an event with a MTTH of 6 months/a year/18 months for the "Battle of Fort Sumter" event to fire, which starts the war.
This would give the CSA chance to form up their army before the war starts, giving them a fighting chance.
