Okay I started a second run on very hard, trying not to overlevel. I've got a decent chip build going but I got to the end of route A after the robot religion section and I'm swimming in diamond crit chips.
Problem is I can't fuse em. yorha boy in the bunker isn't there, resistance camp is trashed. I actually have the red robot in the valley unlocked (finishing that quest at low level was a bitch) but it won't talk to me. Somehow I got it to talk to me once after first initial failure and I basically fused a straight diamond crit +5 from +0/+1 chips
Unfortunately then I wandered too close to eve and he did his scream thing that kills every robot in the city ruins and now I can't get the fuser robot to talk to me anymore. Anyone know the trigger? I have like 25 diamond +0/+1 crit chips

I thought the C ending implied that the Yorha project itself was meaningless. the entire game seemed like 2b's failed attempt at executing 9s before dying and leaving 9s and 2a to unravel their true purpose.

Listen to the dialogue after the tower appears before she wakes up.
Later, take her to resistance camp and talk to anemone and read the terminal. She's the sole survivor of a suicide mission (pearl harbor drop) that is later revealed to be nothing more than a field test for the yorha androids. It's actually worse than that, the ones sent on this mission have a bomb implanted. (not sure how she survived)
After reading the entries she says something like "I'll see you all soon"
Ending C, she sends 9s off with the pod and stays behind to blow up the tower. As it collapses, she says something like "everyone... I'm coming".

i feel like im getting half of the story. i read through the harbor drop memories and took the information that 2a became the template for Execution androids to mean that 2a killed her squad in the same way 2b was sent to execute 9s. neither want to kill their teammates, but its their job.
i didnt know they had bomb in them.... but i was assuming the pearl harbor drop and the b2's last mission were Yorhas way of getting rid of old models that no longer served a purpose. they have a new model planned and have all these shitty old ones, ok send them all to die and collect the last remaining data.

Nope, the number is the personality the Letter is the role. A2 is an 'Attacker' close combat melee specialist. As for the 2 personality it's revealed to be based on Kaine from Nier, and that she stubbornly performs well in the field despite mediocre training evaluations, which is why they keep that personality for 2B.
That's why the Amnesia side mission sets the stage for the eventual 2B/E reveal.
Also brings up a weird question about why there's an E model in the aerial flight at the beginning of the game.
And the bomb thing was side materials only do it's understandable.
The other letters I can remember are
S-scanner, O-operator, G-gunner, B-battler, E-executioner.

before i saw the C ending i didnt understand why 2b was being sent to team up with a unit that usually acts solo, i didnt see any reason for her to be sent after Yorha deserters.
it kinda made sense why 2a with 2b's memories would allow herself to be distracted, stabbed, and still carry out her mission of killing 9s. only way to win is for everyone to die.
but im guessing all of this is wrong, yay japanese storytelling. convoluted as fuck.

Without chips, it's a one-hit kill on hard because it's one of the few sections that enemies scale. That's fine.
The problem is once you start a shmup section you have no way of going back to a point where you can change that without closing the game outright. Pause menu? Nope. Return to title screen? Hahaha fuck you.
This is a GIGANTIC failure in design that I'm honestly surprised wasn't caught during internal playtesting.

What the fuck do I do against Emil? I cant see shit in that stupid fucking dark shithole cave and all he's done in four fights is zoom around spamming fucking heads which take out 3/4 of my lifebar in one hit even when I have +95% health and ranged damage reduction. I've got all 3 pods on M shield it's impossible to do any meaningful damage to him and he wont sit still long enough to hack.
I know 'git gud' but it'd be nice to know where to start considering it takes like 4 minutes to get back to his stupid fucking house from the nearest save point.

I never used M shield, I just used Bomb. Also, you do know that you don't need it equipped on all pods to charge it up to three, right? yeah there's pros and cons to both styles. normally i run 3 different pod programs but for chip farming and boss killing i usually stack.
p shield and m shield really make certain bosses a joke. just beat 21O with a deliberately underleveled 9S, but if you wanted to kill her trivially easy just use ancient overlord L4 to pop the bubble spam, m shield for protection from lasers, and hack the bitch. then in the second half if you switch to triple p-shield you basically can't lose.

I'm just a little peeved that a chip with one purpose doesn't actually seem to do its job. I never use it, to be honest, but since I was dying to two attacks that hit in rapid succession, each dealing 70% of my lifebar, I figured something that gave me enough invincibility (1-2 seconds) to heal would help, but it didn't seem to do anything at all.

i like the idea of all the sort of self reflexive stuff it does but apparently it can be kind of a slog to get through the game mechanically.
wasn't crazy about the combat in a game such as demon souls but the uniqueness of its world kept me playing.
can i expect the same or should i save my money?

It's not all fan-service, you only see 2B's butt when you feel like peeking up her skirt or blowing it off. The story is actually not weebshit, you're not going through final forms every step of the game, and I think the characters are actually very realistic for their situation. The game is fairly easy unless you play on hard and refrain form over-leveling, so it's not like dark souls, however you will likely end up spamming light-attacks on your first run, though it still manages to feel satisfying, at least imo. Also, the OST is godly, and there are great flight bullet-hell sequences where you pilot small mechs
