Honestly, I wouldn't spend too much effort on sound and music.

When I'm playing ARPGs I'm often have the music and ambient sound turned down so I can listen to my own stuff.

Looking good though. What is going to differentiate it from other ARPGs on the market. I see the digging mechanic, but does it do anything else unique?

> Music and memories of associated events

Autobiographical information associated with musical melodies is evoked when we hear relevant music or when we are engaged in conversation about music or episodes and events in our life in which music has been important. Hearing music associated with our past often evokes a strong 'feeling of knowing'. We have this feeling for many songs without knowing the title or text of the songs. We are, however, better at recalling the titles of the tunes we listen to (when the tunes are instrumental) than at remembering a melody by simply reading or hearing its title. The opposite pattern occurs when remembering vocals, for which the titles of the songs are much better cues than the melodies [3]. The finding of this link between text and music, which suggests that music is encoded in semantic memory like text, is of particular importance. Many researchers believe that music is encoded in the brain by the perceptual memory system, which organizes auditory information into melodies and rhythms, rather than by the semantic memory system, which encodes meaning. Nevertheless, musical information could be associated with emotional and semantic information (associative memory), either indirectly or directly, as was shown [3], even if it is not directly related to semantic information.

I use music as an associative memory aid. When I play a game I will choose an album of around 20 songs and play them on repeat while playing. I then take those songs and put them in a big playlist.

Whenever I listen to the playlist, those specific tracks will trigger memories of the game and that engages emotions and memories of the experience - like I'm playing the game again for the first time.

When I listen to my whole playlist, I pretty much go through each of the games I have ever played in my mind and feel the same emotions I got from that game.

Are there any newer single-player games where the gameplay is similar to Dota and LoL? That is, you move by right clicking and have your attacks/abilites on QWER or similar. Reposting:

Need some help.
My code checks the square of the character's vector, to check that it isn't bigger than 1.This prevents the character from going faster diagonally.

The problem I'm having is that when the character jumps, it stutters each time it reaches >1f, obviously because it's taking into account the Y value too.
What would be a fix for this?
>>

Learn general programming before game programming.
Tank a textbook and you'll have the fundamentals of how high level languages work and how OOP works.

If you want to learn the basic logic of game programming use a graphical based one like Construct 2.

I want to avoid conflicts where people do work for free for this project and then someone else profits from this project. (For example by copying this project and uploading it to a place where money can be charged for it.)

Acceptable would be a situation where this project FIRST recieves substantial modification and then is sold.

Also, one single licence should extend to non-code contents of the project aswell, right? Assuming that no separate licenses have been explicitly made about those contents.

It's simple. Everyone can become talented at anything, as long as the person is physically capable of doing the thing.
Some people are born with a natural affinity for something, or they were raised in an environment where they spent many years around something. These factors can make a person become talented faster. But at the end of the day everyone has to put in the work to become talented.

They pulled that "what is your game" shit on me acting like I was on the chopping block and I showed them then I asked some of them where their game was and they unironically smiled and said they didn't have one. These were chatters who were always talking in there so I assumed they were yesdevs. Then some of the other yesdevs made excuses or weak jokes about it like "haha yeah they are nodevs but they will make a game soon or else". I personally found that revolting.
>>
>>180468346
For 2D GMS1 used to be the best option. It has engine shortcomings but it has a near endless community that gladly provides extensive examples and solutions for nearly every issue you could encounter.

Unfortunately GMS2 isn't as good and the fact that YoYo Games has made it much harder to acquire a GMS1 license really rubs me the wrong way, so I'd recommend either Godot (better engine, comparatively small community with worse documentation) or Unity (worse for 2D than GMS1 or 2 but better documentation than Godot).

I'm putting my engine development on hiatus so that I can finish my game faster, gonna use Godot. Guess I finally fell for the memes, hoping to go through Godotscript documentation tonight.
Thankfully most of my "progress" earlier was just bits and pieces of engine I wrote in C++, so this is pretty much a blank slate for me, and a new perspective at the gameplay.
Maybe I got too invested in enginedevving and forgot what I was originally making the engine for.
In a way, godot stopped me from straying from the righteous yesdev path.

So i finally have time to start working, i've spent the past few weeks planning what i'll do, i will post progress here and i'll write details about what i did every time, i may trigger a lot of people because i will not use the best way to do things, starting with how i handled map depth, i have a tileset of tiles, each representing a depth from 1 to 6, a map is composed of two layers, the depth layer and what's actually shown ingame, in edit mode the later layer is flat and has no depth, upon loading the tiles will be offset by depth, this will keep things simple, the map can be of any size, i will implement map rotation eventually, i'm using godot which comes with an Astar algorithm for ai stuff.
Now i'll work on movements, units can move 1 depth normally, light units can jump 2 depths, heavy units cannot, on melee attacks, short weapons have 1 tile and 1 depth reach, medium weapons have 1 tile and 2 depth reach, and long weapons have 2 tiles and 3 depth reach, long range weapons can attack any depth with bows having advantage when attacking low ground.
As for art i will only use placeholders until late stage, this game will be free.
>>
>>180471692
you can use the tool keyword to make the depth graphics show up in the editor too
>>
>>180471692
ok
>>
>>180471082
I never mentioned it on here, or anywhere else, but it is a turn based strategy. I wanted to implement some unique mechanics and tools for the game and brush up on my programming and didn't want to use unity/GM/UE4/whatever so I decided to make an engine for the game, but today as I was browsing through this thread, I realised "4 months and no progress to speak of,no sprites, no resources, no nothing except spaghetti code written at 3 in the morning", so I decided to drop the idea until I have a game. I'll later resume the enginedevving and remake the game in it.
It was just too much time consuming and didn't leave me much time to focus on art and music, but damn I learned a lot of things I didn't knew earlier.
>>180471469
Yeah, but hey, now I can actually post my progress here instead of being a pseudo yesdev lurker
>>180471663
For a second I though of waiting for godot 3.0, but I think 2.x can't be that bad eh

Can we stop with these walls of text.

So, impressions on Godot after using it for a bit:

- It's all there
- Feels like a viable environment to dev whatever game you have in mind
- I like how the scripting is handled in the IDE
- I like how so many second nature macros and controls you are used to using in Unity have been applied, feels very at home
- Still miles behind Unity in terms of workflow but that is something you can easily train yourself to overcome

overall switching back to Unity and making some progress there felt like breathing more oxygen rich dev air. But the godot is still prime with potential, and will be a fun engine to conquer, so I will probably make a game with it in the future. For now my main project will remain Unity.

Really the only reason I would use Godot in the future is because change is good and I want to try a new engine.

The real reason most will use it is because they don't want to pay Unity to use a dark theme and omit the splash screen. For Unity devs who already paid up, they're not going anywhere.

if you're rich, spam ads.

but that's not what you're asking. you want to know how to market on no budget. this is hard to answer because marketing is a field where effective tactics are immediately copied, used, and made ineffective. in general, you put your game in from of as many eyes as possible, and you make sure your game is both fun in the moment, and more importantly, memorable.
>>
>>180476476
If anything it's a good example how the failure to communicate to your audience what your game is can cost you. The gameplay isn't really retro at all, only the aesthetic and combining those two possibly wasn't a good idea since the average customer probably takes a glance and sees retro pixelshit and doesn't get intrigued by the game itself.

I do think that at this point making a pixelart game is the equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot before the race begins. People are sick of it and there's so many games coming out that you don't really lose much by disregarding all games with pixelart in them.

you can make anything work including pixels, you just have to find the right way about doing it

Monolith has a very Cave Story-esque artstyle, very functional and nice to look at but ultimately not all that unique anymore

compare The Last Night, cinematic pixelshit with shaders up the ass, normies are all over that shit even though the game obviously lacks any gameplay to speak of, all they care about is that it looks neat and different from everything else

It's fine, but it doesn't have the depth of resources that for example GMS or construct has when it comes to getting beginning programmers up to speed

Think of it as the halfway point between a "game-making" program and raw enginedev: it's harder, but not as hard as enginedev, you get to make more decisions but not as many as enginedev, you'll learn more but not as much as enginedev etc.

If you're still interested sheepo's tutorials cover the very basics

You do what every other tradesman does: You practice, you look up how stories are meant to work, and you polish up what you write.

You keep doing that until you're a good writer - and then you will know how to make a good story. It ultimately comes down to the characters, but that's about as useful as telling someone 'being good at art comes down to knowing how to mix shapes, colors, and contrast'

What is your game about ?
What's your favourite movie/cartoon/anime/show ?
Anything which inspires you is a source of story. Just don't rip off the plot. Pay attention to what the creator tries to portray. And if you ever think that your game is getting too complicated lore-wise, take a look at the elder scrolls lore.
Ultimately it's up to you how deep can you go. Basically you need to keep it engaging. Like fire emblem games, you pick them up, you KNOW the final boss is gonna be a fucking dragon, but you expect nothing else, then bam, a fucking traitor in your team,or some faggot dies. Plot twists, drama, human nature, you need to depict these in your story using your imaginary examples. Basically as the other anon said, be autistic.

Id like to teach programming to help friends who want to gamedev but I'm conflicted on how to start.

a high level language like ruby can teach you the logic and stuff which people usually have none of at the beginning, and its easy to understand and read.

but a low level understanding of how memory variables datastructures and all that shit works can also help getting the mindset and understand the logic so learning C++ first is no bad for anyone...

Any idea guys around? Have any of you played A Dark Room?

I was thinking to start something similar. Sort of a waiting game, where the overall goal is not clear, but as the game progresses you could find all sorts of weird scenes and new game mechanics.

Like how the game mentioned above was a sort of town management game at first, then it turned into a turn based RPG with world exploration and such. I definitely had fun with it for one-two days, however I still couldn't figure out what's the appeal of it or really point out why I had fun. I guess I was just curious what was going to happen. What should I look out for if I head into a project like this?

So far I was thinking about having RPG-ish item collecting elements, having more emphasis on a story which wouldn't be handed on a silver plate, but rather the player could figure it out by talking to people, finding scrolls etc. Oh, and adding small puzzles games along the way, like a sokoban minigame in dungeons. Or make the whole thing somehow lewd, like a make your own adventure game but with sex.

>Maybe you should make it so you have to hold shoot to charge the shot, which will auto fire at full charge like it is now. But if you release early it fires a bigger beam that deals less damage, proportional to the amount of charge of course.
that's already more or less how it works.

Yeah, I was especially disappointed that they ripped off the signature combo string, air combo, and ranged attack string cancel mechanics of the Souls series. Using the characteristic terrain traversal mechanics of the Souls series like walljumping and airdashing was especially unforgivable.

I don't think there's any detailed benchmarks for Godot 3.0 yet. However Godot 3 is very fast at rendering 3D, even with all the fancy stuff enabled. It's fast at rendering 2D as well, of course.

The only performance problem is with GDScript being slow. But since Godot 3 is getting the GDNative C++ stuff, and C#, any CPU heavy code can be put in those languages.

A garderning pokemon game about plant waifus
you capture plants
you put those plants in the gardens
in every town (10 towns) there’s one loli of the harem waifu culture game
all tell you the story about how they survived their ship crash and were taken by those cute bunnies (every town has a diferent pet animal people).
all the girls seem to be in love with you but you don’t put them too much attention, you want to train hard and be the best (but you’re not a beta).
the plants are how you combat other monsters, they’re like traps in a action rpg
you can’t attack or be hit, but you can’t advance if you don’t defeat the enemy or are boss
every girl speaks some words of his native language
there’s diferent all kind of plants, every plant can be farmed for items to combat monsters and capture other plants.
there’s an evil boss, which is a sorcerer who you fight with of the animal pets who was the leader until you defeat him before
you start the game with the memory loss of the last time you fought, so you don’t remember nothing, the girls seem to tell you the story of their times.
every girl has a routine to sell diferent items and shit
they have a diferent story (missions)
there’s a calendar with special events, like birthdays and so on.

this is good but do you have the skill to do the art?

also, instead of capturing plants full grown you might want to plant them as seeds. you mentioned loli already so if you don't have a problem with including that, you can have a raising game too, growing the plants from seeds.
>>
>>180493442
I have no sense what objects I can or can't go through. There should be a clear visual difference between a background and foreground. Like, it looks like you are inside of that house and then suddenly you go through the roof which means the character is probably outside, in front of it. Same for the trees and everything else. It looks confusing.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

>>
>>180494574
>Ghosts can't go through walls
Where's the scientific proof of that?
>>
>>180494475
I made him transparent so you see the objects behind you. Reaper is a bit bigger in order to have a design as a main character, but you still need to be able to select objects with ease, hence the transparency.

But you do raise a good point, some players might not understand it or better yet, not understand that objects can't go through some walls. I think it's pretty clear but it could be confusing in some cases. I'll see if I can do anything.
>>
>>180494316
You are not going to finish a 3D game before Godot 3.0 stable is released.
And no one is saying anything about making a finished game, we're just talking about rendering performance, which Godot, even in pre-alpha, is quite fast at rendering.
>>
>>180494674
>we're
No, you're talking about rendering performance, I'm trying to explain that even though the performance is good, it's not in a state worth using outside of testing. So when someone asks "Hey should I use Godot for 3D," I'll say "Just wait for 3.0"

Picture this: I'm working on a 2d brawler with dating sim/visual novel elements because I lost a bet and hate myself.
I plan to have a regular story mode, where you need to read trough awfully amateur walls of text and make the right choices to unlock the brawler levels (and unlocks, depending on your choices), and an arcade mode with all gameplay no bullshit, because I assume there's people who aren't interested in VNs (like myself).

Here is temp art of a Snake using a shader to talk.
>>
>>180499192
It's easier to pick up than Unity or Unreal since the documentation has gotten pretty decent.

3D performance is kinda meh until 3.0, though.

It uses Nodes+Scenes with its own scripting language. This is different from Unity's Entity+Component system.

I can't really compare it to Unreal since I've never used it really. But more importantly, why don't you just download it and go through the damn docs http://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/learning/step_by_step/index.html
>>
>>180499590
I have a working brawler prototype made with Monogame. I'll probably build on that, or maybe I'll try porting it to Unity to see if there's a noticeable increase in dev speed. I've never used it, but the editor looks like a useful thing.

Its all on the docs

Node is the base class on Godot

Godot games are a big tree, each element is a node that belongs to a hierarchy, so each is a child to another until you get to the root.

A Scene is a tree "branch" that has a root node and can be instanced.

read the docs, make some tests, read the files the project generates, they are mostly human readable plain text files, have fun.

If you port it to Unity, you'll probably have a learning curve, but once you and your guy get used to the engine, it might increase. It just depends on whether you want the art guy to do more than draw and actually help design in the editor while you code and help design too.

Anybody got any tips for organic looking tile-based generation? I'm just starting out and am trying to get a nice and simple ground-texture working in terms of grass and dirt placement. Everything I try comes out very boxy due to the way the grass blobs need to go off the screen in the same place. Every resource I find online is based around getting things looking varied which is all very useful but nothing really on making it look natural.

Or is this primarily an art issue rather than a method one? I could make pretty much every tile a convex curve but I feel like that would just make everything look fluffy and cloud-like.

First of all it advertises it for you, secondly it convinces people to actually give it a chance. It allows you to get a larger initial userbase which (if your game is good) will lead to better word of mouth marketing as people talk about it. i have to admit, gdscript is far better than game maker's and it's a proper language (has all what you need), took me 10mins to figure it out, if you're familiar with python, it's practically the same but coroutines
>>
3.0 will have C#
It WILL be the year of the Godot.

It'd be the only time you could add black characters and it didn't feel forced

interesting. after reading the article it doesn't seem as bad as I thought, as long as its nothing like gamemaker.

but still I can't decide, you think Godot is better for a 2D pixel game than something like Monogame?

Not necessarily so, look at SBCL
>>
>>180513582
It sounds like an NES game with that old school chibi anime aesthetic, like Toki or some shit.
>>
>>180513908
i know this feeling

i've been coming to agdg and taking on different game projects for 5 - 6 years now and i still haven't made a complete, polished game

fingers crossed for this time, r-right guys?
>>
>>180513647
It's essentially python, which is easy as snot to understand. It's not going to hurt you get the basics of a different language.
>>

is this a meme or for real
I've been seeing a lot of
>3.0 will have EVERYTHING FIXED
>3.0 will have VIRTUAL REALITY
>3.0 will have SHARKS WITH LASERS
>>
>>180513647
Why the fuck do people make such a big deal out of learning another language?

added grass and falling leafs that head into the background. I want to add mushrooms but not sure if it should be 2D or 3D.

thanks to anons yesterday for tips. I wrote most of them down and plan to add them in.

monogame is a frame work, godot is an engine, if you want to like make a game and not be eternal enginedev, don't use monogame
>>
>>180514245
I like the look of this but I can't help but think that it would look a lot better if the protag used a 3d model in a similar style to the other models instead of a sprite
>>
>>180514185
Yes it's real, it will also have a "GDNative" thing written in C with shared libraries that lets you write bindings to use any language you want for scripting with zero performance impact.
>>
>>180514245
If it's not a collectable item, make it 3D or else it won't fit with the surroundings.
>>
>>180514481
holy shit
just confirmed

I can't wait for this

Great, can't wait to write a Godot game entirely in Assembly.
>>
>>180514245
this is looking really good man.
what engine was it again?

> I want to add mushrooms but not sure if it should be 2D or 3D.
tough call, since plants and such are usually 2D planes. if they're tiny mushrooms, then 2D. if it's as big as those rocks, then 3D.

can you name a game programmed with common lisp
>>
>>180514451
I disagree with this. Having the 2d along with 3d makes the game unique in its look. I would suggest making everything that the player interacts with 2d and having everything that is background 3d.
>>
>>180515812
I understand that to a certain extent but at the moment it just looks weird, at least in that webm.
Maybe if there were more sprites in the scene it wouldn't look as jarring.

Haunt the house: Terrortown and Hunting/Polterguy were fun little games anon. Wish you the best of luck.
