Genuine question, why do people losing call out for help? It always draws me in like a shark to bloody water as I can sweep up their shattered domains and hold off the weakened enemy armies.

It's like asking to be gangraped.
>>

Probably because they hope you'll attack their opponent, who is also weakened, first. Thus giving them a chance to recover. Also, the losing player might be willing to pay for help, while the winner isn't going to reward a vulture scavenging his spoils. They could be telling you that whoever is eating them will take too much of a lead to be stopped if successful.

I dunno, I never ask for help because I'd rather turn every province they own or will own to shit with raiding pillagers and Bane Venom Charms while setting up Hell Power bombs or battlefield clears.
>>
>>180309079
Because some people will choose to jump on the currently winning army so they can wipe it out and then clean up the player screaming for help later. Also losers you help then and there will be more likely to help you later if not militarily then through favorable trade deals a small investment then protects your flank later. Really though it just depends on the situation who is getting wrecked and how badly.
>>
Noob here, the way I understand bats are OP because;

* Great blood magic with great blood summons early on and amazing blood hunters

* Stealthy fliers means easy raids

* Forestrec troops with low res cost makes expansion a breeze

* Decent mage versatility and strong crosspaths

* Freespawn sacreds with high HP

did I miss anything major?
>>
>>180311454
That's about the gist of it. Their basic troops are 7g too, and while their stats are unimpressive, they're basically getting flying & stealth for free
>>
>>180311454
Mage mobility, great synergy between troops and mages' paths, good access to battlefield clears and easily available flying demon commanders are important as well, but you got the basics right.

Nobidexx/Indract has a 1h+ long Xibalba review on YouTube btw, check it out if you want some details.

>>180313753
It's not bad. I'd take an E5 snek instead, is a bit safer (doesn't fly, though). And drop some prod for magic if you have an awake already.
>>
>>180314179
but prod 3 lets me go big with warbreeders and indy crossbros
>>
>>180314179
Maneater's actually more reliable at fighting crossbow heavy provinces. holdfirex3, attack archers means he jumps onto the crossbowmen and will often rout the indies by his fear aura scaring off the commanders
>>
>>180314597
Warbreds are good at expanding, but they're not really the best kind of troops vs actual players. Use flails instead.
I found LA Aby's expansion with an awake + prod 0-1 pretty good and magic scales really help your sanguine acolytes. Also, you want to get firestorm + blood stuff ASAP, since your non-blood mages are meh at best. But max prod for more land and more gold for more mages may work for you, dunno.
>>
>>180315124
>but they're not really the best kind of troops vs actual players. Use flails instead.
They've got like 20 prot when berserk. They can tank crossbows to the face. Flail infantry has high attack density, but way lower damage. Against armored units (which players use to frontline with), Warbreds high damage attacks will smash units regardless while Flails will struggle to deal damage until they get buffs. If you mean morningstars, then sure the tower shields are good if you have a huge crossbow blob behind them, but warbreds actually do killing themselves once the melee masses hit in a way that other troops just can't
>>
>>180315421
>They've got like 20 prot when berserk.
Exactly 2 more than flails.

>They can tank crossbows to the face.
You have tower shields. Why would you tank xbows with warbreds?

>warbreds actually do killing themselves
Very slowly. Two attacks per square don't allow them to kill things fast when limb hits exist. And encumbrance + berserk lowers their stats super fast.

You didn't mention two important things about warbreds:
1) they have excellent morale compared to regular infantry;
2) their MR is Ulm-tier and they will get absolutely slaughtered by shadow blasts or militias with sleep cloud support.

The game which you abandoned.
>>
>>180335820
I'm sorry but the guy is right.
Basic probability knowledge:

6% -> 0.06

You calculate the probability of not getting a hero: 0.94

Then you calculate the probability of not getting a hero in 15 turns in a row: 0.94^15

Now if you think of it, the contrary of "not getting any hero in 15 turns in a row" is exactly "getting at least a hero in those 15 turns".
So if you calculate 1-0.94^15 = 0.6047
You have the probability of getting at least a hero in 15 turns. Of course 0.6047 -> 60.47%, in case you prefer percentages.

Of course not, this is the calculation of a nation getting a hero before turn 15 with luck 3.

Only that, no specific heros or nations (however the numbers are the same for all nations).

Also, did you study any basic probability? Tell me what you don't understand and I'll try to make it more clear.
>>
How often should I build fortresses/castles? Should I focus shitloads on magic? What is a good retard guide for recruiting, I think playing N9elhiem ruined some of these basic aspects for me since whenever I play other nations I just stack loads of blessed units and end up getting assraped since they're not as strong as N9elhiem giants.

I don't get what's here to believe, anon.
If you want to test it, do it. But you are going to need more than one game to prove anything.
>>
>>180349776

>>180349853
>If it's 6% chance to get a hero per turn, my numbers are accurate.
Cool. No one ever questioned that.

>I don't get what's here to believe, anon.
Do you have a source on the 6% per turn? Games here almost always use WH, so there's 3 heroes to draw on, one of which is a multihero. So, again, running T3L3 and getting the Corruptor is just not a reliable way of getting S2. That's literally the only point. Mathematically walking through the steps to get 60% based on an assumption that you don't know is true with game settings that are almost never used in MP doesn't help you. It just shows that you fail at basic reading comprehension.
>>
>>180349976
Cool, you learned to read. Real proud of you champ.
>>
>>180349984
You sound like if you spent days testing how damage rolls work because you don't believe them.

Play a 30 nations game all with luck 3 and note when did the heros show up until turn 15.

One more with luck 0.

One more with mf 3

With all that data, checking if it's 6% per turn would be super easy, but I don't really want to test that.

Just get a N9W9 bless and order scales. Don't need a good awake pretender since your giants will dominate everything with that.

Yes, get Rephaim Warriors. Just make sure you never leave them in fertile land and sacrifice some turns of mage recruiting so you can recruit their priests to lead and bless the Rephaim. One of the things that is actually quite terrifying is when you're raiding by some flying Melqarts and an army of Rephaim Warriors devouring all your people while scaring the shit out of the rest.

Use Enkidu warriors for patrolling and blood hunting. Because they're slaves they cost half as much in upkeep.

Event hero if you keep the bodhisvata near a coast. He saves a dragon king in the form of a fish and tosses him back into the sea, and then the king's beautiful daughter comes with a pearl and to deliver it to the bodhisvata as a gift. Then the bodhisvata says he'll take the pearl only if the daughter keeps it, so the daughter's like 'okay' and then becomes a buddhist. If you drop the buddhism elements, it kinda sounds like one of those dumb anime plots where the cute magical girl is like "I live with you now" to the MC.

Rephaite chariots are amazing and you should have little trouble for the first 20 turns if you took production scales.

Grigori and to a lesser degree bloodhunting are a trap. Hinnom is really bad at bloodhunting, and you should focus on other options until at least midgame.

>>180348745
>How often should I build fortresses/castles?
Depending on how rushable your nation is, you may want to get a cheap fort up ASAP (in multiplayer, against AI is more forgiving).

After that, judge based on how fast you're using up money. If you're gaining money, you should probably have more forts. If you're having to shut down mage production in forts because of a lack of gold, more forts is probably not a good investment.

>Should I focus shitloads on magic?
Yes, magic is the tech tree of this game. Against players, you should generally be ready to start using magic by turn 15.

>What is a good retard guide for recruiting
You'd probably be best off asking for a specific nation. It's a much simpler question for people to answer and you're likely to get more applicable information.

AED is nothing, but B9 makes Ermor's chaff extremely tricky to deal with with standard stuff like evos. And lictors become really good at killing things. Str20 + 9 damage from battleaxe. Also, banishment backfires as well, which is extremely annoying.

In-game PMs are a big part of the game, and they are often screenshoted and reposted here (see also: caelum-ctis diplo, what the fuck did you just say about me versions etc.)

Out of the game messages give an unfair advantage to fags like Malakal who have more incentive to be a tryhard and tell people to go to the Steam chat every 5 minutes.

>>
>>180383216
When you play a lot of games, and win some of them, you realize that you're decent at the game, and don't have to prove anything to anyone, and you learn to appreciate the chance to just move shit around and fight stuff instead of doing diplo one-upmanship for a few hours every day (like Aran does). Let me put it this way: if you like Dom4 late-game, either you're a very boring person (like Nick), or you've never won a MP game before.

>>
>>180404287
don't worry about fixed start 'cheating.' Everyone can see the starts when the game is given, but the fixed starts are also helpful in giving everyone roughly even starting positions. You can edit out the fixed start positions, but that kinda nerfs the coolness of cartographic revision, which is that the high income provinces (large provinces / farms / etc) are placed roughly evenly between the players to generate conflict areas and expansion areas are divided into pie slices with rivers/mountains between them so that you have to pick what you expand towards.
>>
>>180404621
I mean, does it work if you scrub the fixed starts out of the version distributed to players. The version on llama would still have them. Would that cause issues?

I have a minor quibble with the amount of W provinces that carto revis adds in general, since IMO water nations should have 10-12 provinces each in their lake/sea when they fight over them or like 7-10 each when it's a 'free' sea so as to not give them big ol blobs of uncontested territory. Most W nations can still use coasts fine, as well as any disparate lakes, but letting them get to the size that land nations need to fight to expand to without any conflict is pretty bad.

Aesthetics are good, though. Everything is simple and terrain is recognizable at glance. And 'plains looking like a wasteland' complaint is just nitpicking, they're almost the same as on Pymous' maps and no one has a problem with them.
>>
>>180410254
EA Atlantis and MA Pelagia are the only ones that are UW locked for mage recruitment. Thed, Ys, and to some extent EA Pelagia get better stuff on coasts than they do UW, R'lyeh gets special stuff on coasts incl amphib mindblasters, the Oceanias get the same on coasts taht they get UW, MA/LA R'lyeh get their efficient spammable mages on coasts, and MA Atlantis gets their lab rats on coasts only.

Surprised you didn't talk about LA Atlantis too. Not an UW nation.
>better stuff on coasts than they do UW

>EA R'lyeh
Aside from the mage-priest the only thing they get are those "amphib mindblasters"; "incl" is technically accurate but misleading.
>Oceania
Incorrect but close enough that it isn't terribly inaccurate. Oceania is an exception.
>MA/LA R'lyeh
>MA Atlantis
But they don't get their powerful mages on the coast.

Some UW nations get good use out of their coasts, but saying that "most" do is wrong.
>>
>>180412908
They get uses out of coasts. They can still make their efficient mages and in most cases their better land-fighting troops on coasts. I never said they get EVERYTHING that they get UW out of coasts, just that they can use coastal provinces (as in, get mages out of them), which is more than most land nations can do with UW provinces.

5-8 provinces close together for a full cap-ring and two forts, with 1-2 province lakes throughout the rest of the map.

Questions that require answers:

>>

>What killed Therodos?
Joke's on you, they're already dead. But the nation withered away and last holdouts were absorbed by Pelagia.
>What happened to Eriu?
Tuatha were already defeated by Man and their descendents, the Sidhe, retreated to Twilight Realms. With the coming of the new god in MA Ascension wars, Sidhe re-emerged to rule some the human and fir bolg populations of Eriu. After MA I'd hazard a guess the Sidhe went back into hiding and human populations of Eriu were absorbed by Man.

>But the nation withered away and last holdouts were absorbed by Pelagia.
It's worth noting that Pelagia didn't really conquer Thed so much as explore their ruins after the Therodians gave up the ghost
>Tuatha were already defeated by Man and their descendents, the Sidhe, retreated to Twilight Realms
You're right here too, but just to clarify the Tuathans weren't exterminated, they just dipped out after losing fights to the humans.
>Why did MA Man turn to LA Man exactly?
This is actually in the lore if you make a pretender for LA Man. Basically, a big ol curse ruined all the nature magic, so the men had to make free college to contain it.
>What killed Ys?

>>
>>180458049
That's not the point. Just set a hard time limit for each game before it starts. Most board games do that, and I don't see why Dom4 games should drag on for 100+ turns. You can set a time limit to 40 for a knife fight between early-game nations or to 100. Just having it there makes people do shit instead of sitting there passively when everyone has 2 thrones and nobody is getting the upper hand.
>>
>>180458049
Like what, you fucking scrub? Name one, you SP-losing faggot. No nation in the game needs 70+ turns to shine besides Lemuria or some other game-dragging cancer. If you're shit at the game it doesn't mean it's because you needed 30 more turns, it's because you're a shit player, you Malakal's taint-slurper.
>>
>>180457198
First step is to identify what you think is causing the issues with dominions lategame.

I think by far the biggest problem with it is that army destroying spells like RoS often prevent you from gaining an advantage by bringing more units and mages.

This means fewer decisive fights like tend to occur in earlygame and midgame. Most of the fighting tends to instead occur with thugs, small raiding/defensive forces, ritual attacks, and SCs.

This effective cap on practical army size combined with endgame large empires also leads to people having too many resources for the few provinces which can be reasonably attacked using those resources.

Therefore you get a slog while each side tries to chip down each other's resources without risking anything too critical themselves.
>>
>>180460132
Literally solvable with a time limit. When you have only 10 turns to gain the advantage you'll play a riskier game, or die trying.
>>
>>180460397
Ending the game before it reaches lategame doesn't fix lategame.

Additionally, it's not just a problem with risky gameplay. In many situations, more mages gives zero benefit regardless of how your enemy acts.

Consider a nation with readily available RoS.

If he's mounting a serious defense, your mages are going to get shredded turn 1 with RoS anyway. There's no benefit in bringing any mages which you can't give protection from RoS.

If he's not mounting a serious defense, you don't need a ton of mages to fight. There's no benefit to bringing them in this situation either.
>>
>>180444086
Lanka was said to be located 100 miles southwest of Sri Lanka. Lanka was also said to be an island fortress of massive scale: the central palace complex alone was described as ~8 miles high, ~12 long, and ~18 wide.
>>
>>180452497
There are a disconcerting number of dogs around for an orgy.
>>
>>180461107
The fact that you think that RoS is some kind of a late-game world-ending threat makes me doubt your competence in Dom4 late-game.

And I hope you realize there's other races besides humans, right? And, oh christ almighty, even nations without A/E mages.
>>
>>180461318
There are also other ways to destroy armies with turn 1 advantage.

RoS is an example of the problem, not the only problem. Someone dumping a few Flame Storms into your lines on turn 1 won't leave your army in good shape either.
>>
>>180461107
>RoS
>A spell countered by an HP higher than 10
>Actually falling for the RoS is a lategame spell meme
>>
>>180461472
So, what;s the actual problem of a late-game? Good luck finding a guy to cast flame storm and bringing him to the front lines where I can kill him easier. And if you did bring him there, you can always cast army of X or other late-game shit. Or you can, you know, split your fucking doomstack or don't use it altogether, Everything you describe literally has a counter and counters that counter those counters.
>>
why does so many pretenders that seem buffy cant even expand?
why are we stuck with just a handfull of chassises that can comfortably expand?
>>
>>180457198
The problem with late game at the moment is the colossal advantage of first turn casting, as >>180461472 points out. The way dominions works and the way spells are when you start hitting 8-9 research levels means whoever goes first in an even fight is going to win, every time, even disadvantaged foes are going to have a huge advantage.

Honestly its probably an issue that won't be fixed until Dominions 5 or trade and taint, most games are decided before late game as it is, midgame is where all the fun shit happens anyway (unless you're in one of those stupid memegames where you get to experiment with Super Super Combatants and effectively unlimited resources)
>>
>>180461773
Low prot on titans and shit because they have bad equipment. They're mostly there to wear a lot of stuff you craft because they have slots, but they're terrible naked.

Most big monsters like parrot, raven, and such have low prot as well.

Some indies just don't fuck around.

The power of DRN.
>>
>>180461773
Because of afflictions and how hard they are to remove, and the fact about a quarter of indie provinces can take on most naked pretender chassis. It's kinda dumb and something I would like to see addressed, but I also wonder what buffing some of those chassis would do to the pretender meta.
>>
>>180461825
That's literally solveable with a time limit.
>>
>>180461991
Time limits are boring. How about disasters after a certain turn limit, like those fucking nutty ones they have in CoE4, gates to hell opening, huge soulless uprisings renegade giant moose. It makes sense from a lore perspective too, the Pankoman has been gone for so long the magical wards in place have begun to falter and barriers between worlds are cracking or w/e

>>
>>180462221
Yeah, let's just add more randomness. It's like people really love Throne of Gaia events, right?

WROOOOOOOOOOOOONG!
>>
>>180461318
Anyway, if you don't think turn 1 advantage is what causes the lategame slog, you're welcome to put forward your own explanation for why lategame turns into a slog.

>>180461660
>you can always cast army of X or other late-game shit
This sentence makes me question if you've ever reached lategame.

When you're moving troops into a province, the enemy gets to cast a round of spells before any buffs go up for your side. A good player with access to lategame magic can destroy an army in that turn.

>Good luck finding a guy to cast flame storm
Give a F2+ mage a matrix and 4 slaves. Or give a F3 mage a skull of fire.

Dirt cheap turn 1 flame storm caster who you can let die without giving a shit. You even probably get the items back.

>Or you can, you know, split your fucking doomstack or don't use it altogether
That's why I pointed out borders often aren't large enough for that.

When you have a 10 province border and 200 mages to fight with, any army you move in is going to be RoS-worthy. So you cut down on your army sizes and end up with skirmishing from both sides.
>>
>>180462221
I wonder if that could be moddable. Like, have an isolated AI on each map with a single province. Make a special nation for the AI that only has access to 5 cancerous globals. On turn 100 give AI 5 mages that can cast one global each and 1000 of all gems.

Yeah as if they'll make any changes. I remember when Dominions 4 came out and I first bought it and was like "this shit looks the same as Dom 3 and still has 99% of the problems why haven't they fixed and improved the game interface/visuals/userflow etc"

Dominions 8 will come out in 2100 and will still be 2d cardboard cutouts with 2 frames of animation, menus and screens that require 70 clicks to perform simple actions, and manual removal of gems from commanders unless you want to accidentally fuck up the scripts of every army that happens to be standing on a laboratory.

Seriously I still remain severely disappointed by the limited nature of updates and improvements to the game between versions 3 and 4.
>>
>>180462303
One of the Devs almost exclusively plays ToME.

We're getting so much more randomness
>>
>>180462362
This all sounds like some stupid Rejakor talk and even post formating fits, so I'm done arguing with you. I know that turn 1 advantage is big, but there are ways around it, like break siege/magic phase gem spending triggers etc. etc. It's not fixable in Dom4, end of story.

Everything else can be fixed with a time limit.
>>
>>180462506
But muh grafix would make modding a pain in the ass. We don't need it. I'd be much happier to see some more bloat or some interface improvements instead of better animations and visuals.
>>

seriously why don't commanders and troops start with slightly-nonretarded scripts like "nonmage commanders with nonzero leadership start way in the back with holdx5 stay behind troops, mage commanders the same but castx5 and cast spells, archer squads with fire closest, melee squads with attack closest" etc

very simple change that would among other things help newbies get into their first game.

Similarly, why can't you specify a long path for scouts to take and then not have to touch them until they reach the end? Do you really think gameplay is improved by needing to tell your 40-province-long chain of scouts to advance?

I have an idea for the next cancer meme "turning" game
somebody proposed teams
I propose something a little different:

All human nations are a single team. Yes, 1 pretender and the rest disciples
against individual non-humans. Any non-human fights and dies alone, without disciples.

To make things more fun, scrap thrones, use VP, maybe with turn limit to increase memes

>>
>>180522437
Unmarked as line holders when you're still spending gold on that.

Make sure to use slightly more Firbolgs than unmarked in most cases since you can fit size 2 units in with the size 4 and Firbolgs will die first. If you use two line formations, the fir bolgs will filter forward into the gaps.

If you want to kill people with units, use Nemedians.

What would be the best bless for sacred human heavy infantry with shields (recruitable in every castle)? N9E4 or something?
>>
>>180534117
N9 is a giant bless, humans lack the HP to make it useful, E4 is a great bless it generally better for combing with a W9 bless or for reinvig on sacred mages.
>>
>>180524981
Is Caelum invading you? If so, mind coughing up deets on his investment?
>>
>>180534117
Depends on how heavy is heavy.

Heavy armor like blindfighters want an E bless. E6 snake is fine, but if you have other uses for a major bless (as Agartha does for its heavy thugs), then you can get N9Ex as you say. The extra HP from N9 will make them beefier and reduce attrition with expansion, but it isn't going to make them thuglikes as is the case with giants.

If you have something that's fairly lightly armored like a Levite, then it depends on how you want to use them and what your magery is like. If you have good buff magic (E/N/W mages) then you can go a W9Ex bless and use them to actually kill stuff. If, on the other hand, your mages are going to kill stuff by evoking or summoning stuff or battlefield damage etc then you want your infantry to just linehold and tank spells, which N9 is better for.

Either way, you don't generally plan a build around using human infantry sacreds on their own. You can still use the dudes, but their use case depends more on your mage cast than the dudes themselves.
>>
>>180534298
I just figured W9 would cause them to fatigue out quickly in their heavy armor. Also N9 is useful for my thugs as well.
>>
>>180534459

>>

>>
>>180534117
B9 can be good, depending on how cheap they are. More strength is always good, and having lots of sacreds with blood vengeance make some methods of fighting you more dangerous or not viable.

N9EX is good for basically anything, and will be the best option if you want to make a decent amount of use of sacred/shrouded thugs and SCs later.

Skirmish hurts your units' performance in melee. Arrowcatchers or line formation can be better tools to deal with archers, depending on your overall strategy for the fight.

>"ahahah he recruited non lizards as miasma cits"
Absolutely worthwhile if you get indie mages. Give them messenger shoes to avoid disease, or let enemy dominion cover the province.

Worth it for scouts too if they're near the edge of your territory..

>"ahahah he didn't equip thug with bare but most gem efficient minimum of brand+vineshield"
I've used resist items to counter mage support with thugs before.

Depending on province defense and thug, some can get away with not taking vine shield.

These are not situations which only occur once in a blue moon. Get good.

Also, how does the game know you wanted every single one of those casts to go off immediately? If you script Thunderstrike x5 on an A3 mage, should the game realize your mage can't do that without falling asleep and automatically add gems to fix it?

I don't enjoy people spamming me with resends, but my point has been made well enough by now. I'll start taking turns a lot more swiftly, and will do my best to not be the last to take my turn for the next fair while, barring when I'm asleep.

Whoever did the original spamming, just maybe try and learn the lesson and don't spam just because someone hasn't taken their turn at the pace you'd like them to. As my neighbours know, some of us actually do need to consider our turns.

Idiotic suggestions. Both of these rely on so many unpredictable variables (changing scales in the province, spells cast by your or enemy mages during combat, etc) that any such indicators would be completely impractical.

even looking at what rituals you're planning to cast on that province isn't an unreasonable expectation. And fine if your mage casting wolven winter gets mind hunted before he casts THEN and only then does it start to become anything near the territory of "okay yeah game you really honestly couldn't have shown me that information at the time"
>>
>>180556138
What's an example of a game with at least Dominions-level deep gameplay that has good UI?
>>
>>180553868
Most of your complaints seem to be with the UI, not lack of meaningful choices. I'm happy to agree the game's UI could use quite a bit of improvement.

>he actually thinks that a modern wargame couldn't reasonably look at the destination province for an army when determining how to color the spells in mage scripts
>he doesn't think it's possible or reasonable for a game interface to display differently a 5x thunderstrike cast from A3 vs A12
You can end up fighting in either the current province or the province you're moving to. In a few situations you can end up fighting in a different province entirely. How would you model that?

You can't properly display fatigue costs if you don't know the scales in the province you're planning to move to, either.

Your fatigue costs go completely out the window if your mage goes off-script for a turn.

In practice I don't think this UI feature would be very useful. Also, it has nothing to do with a presence or lack of meaningful decisions.

>the thug bit is meant against the backdrop of the classic newbie mistake of an over-equipped thug, not a specialized resisting one or whatever
So what's the problem here? If thug loadout can vary based on a bunch of factors, how is it a no-brainer decision?

>he assumes the skirmish formation is for your frontline and not your archers
I don't usually like skirmish on archers. It makes it much harder to predict where enemy arrows/spells are going to target so you can keep your mages out of the way.

I'd rather lose archers and save my mages. So even in this situation there's reasons to go either way.

>and further that just goes to show yet another obvious but easily missed should-make play of recruiting strong or needed indies in this way
Sure, for most usual indie and site mages it's pretty much ideal to recruit them 24/7.

It'd be nice if that was different. Thankfully situations like this are rare enough in dom4 that they don't bother me much.
>>
>>180556196
>even looking at what rituals you're planning to cast on that province isn't an unreasonable expectation.
Should the game look as what rituals the enemy will be casting as well?

I'm glad devs didn't spend their time on such nonsense, and concentrated on game content instead.

The initial point, which I fully admitted in a later post may have some wrong examples in it, was that there are a lot of no brainer choices that are basically the only reasonable line if you've got enough experience to understand what's going on in the game. This tangent we've gotten off on is related but different, about how the UI impacts the transparency of such choices that should be obvious but aren't because of obfuscations.

>>180556452
obviously not, but even so there are design approaches that can mitigate some of the ridiculousness of "welp oops I guess my mages won't do what I said." E.g. (and this is not meant per se as a What Should Be just an example approach) mages that are scripted to do a thing and would normally fatigue out, but have a "use gems as needed" box of some sort checked just grab gems from your stockpile to do their thing in battle. Yes, yes, I understand that laboratories as gateways to your gem stockpile are a thing in this game that matters but it needn't intrinsically be that way. The micro of following every army with gemscouts and meticulously shuffling individual gems around every turn is pretty silly and I wouldn't mind seeing it go in favor of a more smooth approach.
>>
>>180556769
Go is a partially solved game, fag. And AI already wins 5-0 against best human players as well.
>>

>Year's '94 and my trunk is raw
>In my rear view mirror is the motherfucking law
>I got two choices y'all, pull over the car or, hmm,
>Bounce on the devil, put the pedal to the floor
>Now I ain't trying to see no highway chase with Jake
>Plus I got a few dollars I could fight the case
>So I, pull over to the side of the road

A zero experience scrub might think that trying to run from this potential ticket is as viable as stopping, but anybody who's not retarded realizes otherwise. Games can be designed to reduce the number of non-choices that seem like legitimate choices to players.

Well yeah, the reason I find the difference between a solved game and an engine that outperforms top humans interesting is actually kindof neat. The fascinating thing about AlphaGo and chess engines etc is that they're REALLY GOOD at these games but not actually solvers of them. That is, for example, that there will be (very VERY rarely) times when it thinks a position is won when it is lost, or lost when it actually can be drawn, or whatever. Because they are just heuristic engines that make very very good well-educated guesses (well, in simple enough positions they CAN calculate and solve out what's left of a game) but they're not perfect, not by a long shot.

It's actually a kindof cool but subtle difference. The neat things about these engines is that, essentially, they play LIKE WE DO, though with faster and more precise visualization. They don't actually play like an oracle would.
>>
>>180556812
>was that there are a lot of no brainer choices that are basically the only reasonable line if you've got enough experience to understand what's going on in the game
I understand your point, but I disagree. While there are some choices which aren't really a choice at all, I've found the majority of things I end up spending time on in dominions require a fair bit of thought.

I think the choices which you consider obvious have downsides you're missing. So far you've only listed 3 or 4 choices which I'd consider (nearly) always the best option, from 15 or so things.

Assuming ingame is as good or better as the list of examples you described, 70+% of decisions are meaningful. 70% is definitely a point where I'd consider it to be most of the decisions you make, which was what I originally said.
>>
>>180557873
I mean yeah I don't really think dominions is as simple and thoughtless as a game of chess against a (non-competing) seven year old, which was by inference the original hyperbolic point at the top of the reply chain. The game absolutely is a lot deeper than that. But there are still a lot of things that only seem deep if you don't know the obvious answer, and the design design could help shave more of that off.

i mean they *are* one of the worst nations in the unmodded game we're talking about here! you can use astral and fire magic, which are really bad for most types of buffs (obviously stuff like antimagic, flaming arrows, cold resistance aside). You can do Big Fire Spells off of communions eventually but they're not as good as what other nations are doing by then usually. You can teleportgank with Grand Masters and hope they don't die (hint: vanjarls do the whole trapeze type gank thing way better)

you can use fire in a jar to help set up permanent fire elemental summoners that don't need labs/scouts to restock on gems

You want to go either awake piggy or N9 with prod scales. If you go the former, you want to max Nemedians for expansion, and then turn them into raiders. If you go the latter, you use mixed unmarked with firbolgs for expansion, then swap to full nemedians around turn 7-10 (depending on how many indies are left) so you have some killy glamour units to fight enemy players.

Your first research goal is usually straight to Conj 5 for air elementals, since those let you use relatively few mages to have a major impact on fights. Against Abysia (which rushes fire elementals) or Berytos (which can do the same and also has elephants) you want to go Alt 1 / Evocation 2 first to get AN magic damage to zap both the burning ones and the elementals that are summoned with them and get some false fetters to help keep their killy lads contained.

Eventually you're going to want to get Storm and Thunderstrikes so that you can deploy Fomorian Druids in bulk.

If you went N9 with prod scales, you can thug Fomorian Druids and Nemedian Champions. If you didn't, you kinda can't do so economically so you'll need to use nemedian troops with your champions and either air elemental summons or water bottles or similar to use cloud trapezing raiding.

Later on you counter armies with anti-army spells of various flavors - winds of death, dance of the morrigans, or rain of stones are the big ones. Fomoria's one of the few nations that can take on a full blood nation in the late game since their tool kit is just so impressive.

Depends on your neighbors, and your build. But I would say the two primary research goals that make sense are either:

1. Conj 2/Evo 5: You have a shit ton of A2 mages and ones that recruit anywhere. Storm + Summon Storm Power + Thunder Strike Spam is very effective.

2. Conj 5: This nets you summon Air Elemental which is pretty gem intensive but extremely strong.

Your secondary research goals have a lot of effective options that you should pick based off what gems your sitesearching has netted you

Const 4: This nets you thug gear. Your Fomorian Druids and Kings are great for thugging once you research alteration.

Alt 3: This nets you mistform congrats you now have Druid and and Fomorian king thugs with just a vineshield and water brand which you have native access too. Bonus if you get to Alt 4 you get liquid body and quickness on your W1 guys. Go all the way to Alt 6 for soul vortex and you have Fomorian king lite SC's

Conj 6: This will let you turn death gems into your Morrigan summons, which are really good. Check the mod inspector for how crazy they are: basically flying with 20 defense and Fear.

Enchantment 4/5: Enchantment 4 will get you cloud trapeeze which makes your thugs more mobile, and magic phase movement in general is just incredibly useful. Enchant 5 gets your skelespam on your cap mages, not the best use of them but still nice to have when they go off script. (and don't forget rigor mortis at Enchant 6 if you're using undead summons.)

Once you hit some of those secondary goals, you're going to want to rush Evo 7

Evo 7: Nets you Wailing wind which works great with morrigans, Wind of Death which is really nasty when you can trapeeze a caster on a stack to cast it then run. AND if you're not playing summod, it can get you an easy RoS with one of those little Fir Bolg druids and a little gear.

I know someone was working on a guide for Fomoria (pretty sure it was Sy), but I'm not sure if it's out yet

Not in that way, you pervert! I just like their lore and their paths. Wish Dominions had more "psionic" races/nations.

But what i can use against mindblasters?
>>
>>180573627
Marginally more dudes divided into marginally more squads. Mindblasters use archer targeting, which means once they lock onto a squad, they don't change targets until the targeted squad is dead or routing. This means that they can keep one group of N9 sacreds in place and not kill them while your other dudes just go up and kill their troops. Assuming you're fighting Agartha, the main thing you have to worry about early that'll swing fights is Earth Meld, but your troops are way better than theirs at actually fighting if they aren't getting that spell off.

If a script goes Com. Master-> Com. Slave, will the slaves get the path-boosts too? If they did it would reduce the fatigue they take, wouldn't it?
>>
>>180580425
I think only the caster's path boost reduces fatigue. Slaves get the fatigue distributed and take extra if they don't have the spell's main path at all.

Master->Slave scripts could have use with innate spellcasters. I haven't tried that gimmick out yet though so idk.

Fomorians are the giants of the celtic nations. All the celtic nations are elves. Therefore Fomorians are giant elves. They also have Nemedians, which are literally elves.

The fear-elf-ghosts might be Morrigans but they aren't ethereal.
>>180581070
Slaves also take extra fatigue if they have less magic than the master's effective path-level after the communion boost. They take less if they have more magic than the master's effective path-level after the communion boost.
>>
>>180581942
wait does it mean that all enarie communions are more effective at summoning skiellies than enarie/soothsayer ones?
>>
>>180582361
yes
>>
>>180582361
No, it means that all-enarie communions accumulate fatigue at a slower rate than Enarie/Soothsayer ones, if the Enarie are casting anything but Astral spells. The path-boost is the same.

Power of the Spheres/casting *power spells can significantly reduce the amount of fatigue that slaves take.

How do you think Ichytids reproduce? My first thought was that they'd just do the same thing that most fish do, but then why would they only live on the coast?
>>
>>180593867

When momma ichtyid and poppa ichtyid love each other very much they raid a coastal village and impregnate a human female.

They live UW as well though.

But only in shallow seas: parts of the ocean that are directly adjacent to land, by mapgen-convention.

Plenty of fish live in shallow waters as opposed to deep seas. Could live in reefs and shit.

weird. you definitely used the end turn command and all instead of saving? did you not get the resend sent to you at all, or did you get the fresh turn copy but your .2h file didn't get acknowledged? I was saying that something so large and dense it grows up to be HP 16 will kill a human mother during childbirth. Especially if it's a weird fish-spawn.
>>
>>180605992
Yo babies aren't even 8hp, much less 10
>>
>>180607074
However much HP a baby has, it's large enough to make childbirth dangerous. If this fish is even 30% bigger than it's still extremely likely to end in death for the mother.

Whats all the magic pen gear you can set up on a mind hunter? All I know about are rune smashers, eye of the void and spell focus.

You can find it in the mod inspector. Every 2 levels of S adds additional pen too

"Girls" and "whores" also work for actually wishing for the blood slaves if I recall correctly (it's been a couple of years since I actually played). There's some surprising stuff you can wish for, definitely a fun spell to experiment with. You can also wish for any unit that isn't a Grigori, there's a gag Grigori specifically to cockblock that, but this does include pretenders so for instance you can wish for boddhisattvas of mercy and they come as units (have to be given intelligence via a spell to make them commanders), meaning you can have a small army of boddhisattvas led by a boddhisattva. And IIRC you can wish for any artefact, even unique ones owned by other players, which will remove them from that player's possession and give them to you.

It's based on base path only. Communion path boost doesn't affect it.

Close.

Mages with no paths in something actually behave like they have 0.5 when gaining fatigue as a communion slave.
