I've been thinking about whether or not Genocide is canon. Sans was watching the timelines bounce left and right until it all ends, but we actually don't know when he receives this information. It might not come until after you initiate the Genocide route (ie he receives the report while you're taking a nap), meaning in timelines where genocide doesn't happen he doesn't receive a report about the universe ending.

You could just go half and half, and have Geno be a Neutral continuation, since it's dubious what happens to Frisk. Could easily run with the idea that Frisk is stuck and decides out of desperation that if nice doesn't cut it, maybe violence will. Doesn't even need murderghost, just Chara being an advocate for violent solutions, since kindness doesn't get them anywhere and trusting anyone is a clear path to betrayal.

'For shits and giggles' always feels like a weird motivation for me. From a player perspective sure, but unless Frisk is as emotionally vacant as Flowey, it feels like a stretch.

I should preference this by saying I don't subscribe to charrator outside of genocide and I think genocide is mostly Frisk's doing with little influence from Chara.
To be blunt I'm not going to argue that. I'm usually all up for debate and always try to keep an open mind but at this point I've heard it all and I really don't care.
There's nothing wrong with liking it, sorry if I come off as hostile, I just don't buy it.
The lack of canon material is why I used hate Chara.
If they were just a crappy character, fine. That's okay.
But instead we have a character with no canon personality and a ton of potential.
They can go so many ways, there are plenty of interpretations no less canon than the next one but both are vastly different characters.
That itself isn't bad.
But some Charas are worse than others.
The problem arises when people decide they can write Chara however they want.
Because there is a lot of blanks they can fill with whatever they want and they stop filling in blanks and start taking bigger and bigger leaps to suit the OC they created out of Chara.
Then they devote a whole lot of whatever medium to that OC usually drowning out the other characters.
This also has the side effect of uncomfortably forcing Chara into everything they do not belong in.
So my beef with Chara was less to do with the character more to do with that character's impact on the community, and as soon as I realized that the character bothered me a whole lot less.
I still don't like them, but I don't hate them either.

I rarely see Gaster pushed as hard as a Chara.
Like when someone does something with a Gaster "OC" the attitude is more "Hey here's a thing I made based on what little we know about the character."
Rather than "This is the end all be all canon Gaster!"
People seem more self aware when writing Gaster, like people try so hard to justify their Chara in canon while most people know there is no point in trying to justify a Gaster.
That's not to say that there are no people who push their dumb Gaster OCs or theories as canon or vise versa with Chara and I'm not saying one is better than the other they very much share the same problems, that's just the trend I see in the community.
Or maybe I just had selective vision because I hated Chara for so long.

With Chara, they're human and at the very least troubled, so a lot of less self-aware fans just straight-up project into them everything they can. From mental illnesses, to gender problems, to bigot humans, they project so hard into Chara that they go straight past OC and into thinly-veiled self-insert, or author mouthpiece

Sorry to jump in, but there's something I've been meaning to ask about this. I joined the fandom around Feb 2016, and dindus started going full swing in fanworks. Now, in several theories, I found that they constantly justified being hard on fanworks, or being preachy, by claiming some nebulous anti-Chara time, where people who liked evil Chara would constantly bully other people. However, from the moment, I joined the fandom, all the major Chara meltdowns had been dindus blowing a fuse and harassing artists.

Has there ever actually been a period where fans of evil Chara were hounding everyone else, or is that just complete bullshit to make dindus feel more righteous?

The difference is nobody pretends like those things never happened. Asgore killed 6 children, Asriel murdered monsters over several timelines, and they both show remorse over their actions. I think it has to do with sense of scale. Asgore had to choose between the life of innocent children of his enemies and the future of his people, and Flowey was a child given the powers of a god. Chara, on the other hand, had relatively normal human problems. It's easier to sympathize with drastic measures taken in drastic situations. Not so much with a kid that found a loving home with monsters and decides to kill themselves so their brother can go out and murder people for the greater good.

Sure, he's nice to Frisk, but Frisk really earned it. He's not gonna turn around and start being a dick just because. But he's fairly forceful when telling you he can't come back. He speculates that Frisk had a tragic past and warns them to temper their idealism because the surface isn't as nice as the Underground. He even warns them against his future self because he doesn't trust himself.

But most people just see a cute sad face and attach a personality to it.

I kind of think a large part of it comes from the fact that he knows his return to Flowey is imminent and there is not a damn thing he, or Frisk can do about it. Weirdly enough knowing for certain something bad is coming is often much worse on the psyche than just a random happening.

In terms of personality, he'd probably be less blindly trustful and a little harder to form emotional attachments in the long run. Survivor's guilt is going nowhere and he'd probably be a bit awkward around Asgore and Toriel, since they probably suffered the most in the runs he started killing.

Nonetheless, he'd very much try to enjoy being a kid again, maybe even overdoing it, especially things he was unable to do as a flower.

Also, I expect him to have some ptsd and guilt. Probably not nightmares so much because that would require him to have felt more helpless, when the issue was that he wasn't. But certainly some anger issues and maybe depression. Even on his good days he'll probably be prone to suddenly remembering something awful that happened during his resets and having his mood ruined.

Agreed on the guilt and ptsd. Hell, I can see him being afraid of solely human crows, and perhaps gunshots, depending on what exactly struck him during the plan. Impatience and anger issues as well, though I think both of those would be things that just kind of erupt from him and then he immediately pulls it back. Frisk is a very good influence for him to be around though, not just because they'd be friends, but because Frisk is the only one who'd understand how badly the ability to reset could warp a person.

I can also see him being very awkward around any person he was especially cruel towards in any of his runs. I can however imagine him with nightmares, but just a very straightforward kind, always just 'waking up' as a flower, alone and with no one around him, mirroring when he originally woke up in Asgore's garden.

I'm not the biggest fan of just non-stop angst, but there's so much to explore about his saved psyche, that gets woefully underused in favor of just fluff.

I think it's best to model it as someone who played the same video game an autismal number of times, because that's how it's presented in the game. Being able to exactly quote everything people said, knowing all kinds of inane details that wouldn't stick if experienced just once because they really aren't all that interesting unless you have nothing else to obsess over, and so on, but not necessarily having a deep understanding.

Yeah, sounds about right, I guess. I think there has to be a comfortable middle-ground between just a couple of resets and... whatever the fuck button mash number your pic is memeing. I can completely roll with the idea that Flowey knows in what order shopkeepers restock, or the dog patrol routes, stuff like that by heart, because he's seen them play it out before. When it's something different though, like say everyone's answers to a specific question, I think it'd get muddy though, because that's at best a couple thousand of different variations and eventually Flowey's brain would just dump unnecessary info.

With that said, there's actually a really interesting idea here. Throughout his existence as Flowey, Asriel at least had some level of comfort by knowing how people react to things, what the like or hate. He couldn't really get blindsided. The Dreemurr family are all connected to Golden Flowers.

Chara likes Golden Flowers, it's from their village. Frisk also likes Golden Flower Tea, like Asgore. Asgore is also a gardener, and when his children came through with the seeds and stuff, he spent the next X time gardening those golden flowers, and now they are all over his house and garden. Toriel also planted and grew some of the seeds, on Chara's grave, where Frisk falls. When Asriel died, his dust's essence was imbued into the seeds, and the first flower that grew became him. With DT from the Human Souls, he woke up as the flower.

Do other groups of characters have a unifying item or element of some kind? Like, Gaster and the Skelebros, what thing unifies them all? The best I can come up with is darkness.

Similarly, in Undyne's role, Frisk covers the heroic noble justice angle that everyone could rely on and stuff, but they are a pacifist with no killing intent or will to fight. Chara covers that fighting spirit, refusing mercy, and never giving up in a battle, but as far as I know they don't have that moral just and noble backbone.

I honestly don't know how many time must you be told this, but Asshole Pacifist, is a viable route. Incomplete genocide is a thing. If you can only see them as pure good and pure evil, that is YOUR personal issue, because you are not capable of looking at them in any other way than a standard ying-yang bullshit. You can keep them together as one UNIT, but you are completely sacrificing TWO separate characters with their own experiences and their own ways of doing things, in favor of an amalgamate.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I am still working with both Frisk and Chara. They are as much of an "amalgamation" as they are in the game itself. I am not killing off either of them unless it works best for the role. In Sans' role, Frisk and Chara are still Frisk and Chara. Chara still functions as a separate consciousness narrating what happens. Chara still hates humanity. Frisk still flirts. Frisk is still a pacifist. Chara is still willing to kill. Etc.

In every roleswap situation I think of in regards to them, I think of both of them. I think about everything I know about both of their personalities and stuff, separately and together. The only role I can think of that would call for Frisk and Chara 'dying' with an amalgam taking their place is Papyrus' role. And that's mostly due to an idea that Papyrus' memories of Gaster and stuff are "gone" or something, whereas Sans may remember everything, along with Papyrus' general attitude.
