I would think if Sonic were to be in a Sandbox open World title in which exploration is key and having the freedom to go wherever and however means nessary to traverse multiple locales in the world. Crossing Oceans using mach speed to get to faraway islands after getting upgrades to enhance Sonic stats by these 4 attributes

Look I enjoy the platforming and all its glory for them being levels that have a set length to them from Start to finish but I would enjoy if ST starts to explore something like a more Jet Set Radio Future setting to where Sonic and Co can freely explore without stress of being forced a set path or goal letting the player explore as free as the wind.
Sonic is Wind. He should be as free like it. Freely to go out of bounds and breaking boundaries.

Platformers need a lot of tough into their map, as the maps ARE the gameplay.
An infinite runner like that Android game maybe, but more developed. And it would still vomit out very shallow maps, so it's not too different from an empty open world map.

By now there is probably another division within Sega that aside from the main team working on Sonic Forces. There is another working on Sonic Freedom. Years in the making the world would be detailed as such not everything will be flat but the layout of the lands and such will affect Sonic's running speed and friction to that Sonic could trip up at times. Weather and land effects that could affect Sonic's running capabilities to that he has to adjust for them. We cannot have Sonic being at full capacity of breaking the entire game to just have him go full speed. He needs growth and as such progress within the game to enable such capabilities would open up new venues for Sonic to explore and experince.

I for one would love to see Sonic being able to run across Lava due to a special equipment that is acquired by finding specific robotic components to give to Tails to tinker.

I understeand the idea that Sonic doesn't need to be a one pony trick but games starring Sonic should always have f4sting as an integral part of their mechanics.

I understeand the appeal of Open world but I don't see how they would be a good fit for Sonic. Levels with more exploration are definitely something SEGA should have, but full on open worlds would be harmed by Sonic's speed rather than improved by it.

What we haven't focused on more about Sonic's ability is more of how acrobatic he is.

Here's a scenario. Sonic running at say 125 Miles per Hour on a Highway with cars/semis/ and other vehicles in his path. He would if the player is fast enough to enable the parkour button to breeze thru the oncoming traffic by running on top/side or sliding underneath them. Going at higher speeds would cause more havoc and raise Sonic's G.U.N/E.G.G.M.A.N threat levels causing mor trouble to our Blue hero. We are always told to go fully fast and to reach the goal within the shortest time possible. But however given how detail the layout of the world would be. Perhaps multiple directions of choices of how a player tackles the world and its environs to that where he can be more of a help then a hiderence to the locals and the civilians.

I would like it if Sega would continue the Sonic Unleashed aspect to where Sonic is just a vegabound and hardly no one knows of him until he starts crossing paths with the populace.

The Open world aspect would have barriers in which when starting out the game you have only so limited of abilities and equipment that you can only explore a marginal but still large enough area. (City) of the entire world map. Here Sonic can explore, do quests, and progress thru the main story all the while gaining experince and items to enhance his abilities of the 4 stats. Its only when he reaches a specific amount of speed he would be able to leave the area and break thru Eggman's Forcefield that is surrounding the city that was trapping not only Sonic but the civilians inside.

Station Square will not only be a locale in it. But there will be other cities worldwide.

I am suggesting that not only just a 8 part region to fully explore. I am meaning that Sonic could potentially run across the entire planet that is fully detailed to every locale in it that would adjust to Sonic's Speed making it so that near-end game Sonic would have speeds to reach limit

I'll stick to the GTA5 measure because I assume it's something most people are familiar with. If not then by all means let me know and I'll look for a better reference.

The map in GTA5 is about 80m2, that means around 20 miles from end to end. A regular car in that game can cross it in around 10 minutes. It took a team of around 200 people around 5-6 years to make that, and it isn't very detailed.
So you would need some very powerful tools that I don't think anybody has in order to make a map 24,0002km, that is more or less what you would need to make the entire planet, less so a "very detailed" one. And I realize that's probably not what you meant but I'd figure I'll throw it in there regardless. The measurements obviously don't quite work out the same as IRL because it's a game, but basically if you made a map the size of GTA5, and you made Sonic as far as a car in that game, he would be able to run from one end to the other in 10 minutes. That's not 1 city, that's the entire map. And if you want to upgrade Sonic's speed over the course of the game then he's gonna be burning trough all that work in no time.

You also need to make the map interesting. Most of GTA 5's map is fucking nothing except for the cities. The map feels bigger because you expend a lot of time in the small areas that are densely filled with stuff to look at, which admittedly is a trick that could work for Sonic to a lesser extent. You need to put in platforms, activities, wide spaces. Things for Sonic to run and jump around, and you need manual design going into that.
Most open world games randomly generate most of the terrain, that's why they're even possible in the first place. A lot of the terrain is RNG and the devs just fix it up a bit over the years and put the more intentional, tho still general, stuff they need in it.

Is it any good?
I enjoyed SotC for the atmosphere and the quest of the entire aspect with the sword being a guidepost and little to nothing else telling you where to go.
Also the Breath of the Wild makes you look around to plan your route. You could go do the main quest but you can pretty much fuck around and explore everywhere as long as you prep up.

Now, assuming that you are immortal and can work on this project for as long as needed. Here's a few ways to overcome the technical difficulties:

I think maybe, and I don't know much about physics engines admittedly, I would consider a simplistic physics model and small objects. That way you don't need a huge map, just a regular sized map with a lot of small things in it.
So you make a low-detail, low-poly, small sized model of Sonic and you make the rest of the game in this way too, you at least get the size limitation out of the way. In simple terms: We can make a bigger PS2 game on the PS4 than in the PS2. But you would be limiting yourself in what you can have the players doing, and you would have a game that looks 15 years old.

Another way of working around this limitations would be to not just limit the player to a corner of the map, but to bottle-necked sections. You make a lot of corridors separated from each other by invisible walls and you force the player to go around in circles even if they don't notice it. You can also use different altitudes. You don't have a very wide map to run around but a whole bunch of sections interconnected to each other.
You can even fake the fact that you are in the same section as before by using backgrounds and invisible walls, changing the lighting and using visual tricks (another trick that SotC makes great use of).
But ultimately at that point you aren't making a game that feels much different from a regular Sonic game that loads levels individually, you are just taxing the poor computer more than necessary for no reason. Which is why Sonic games don't do this already.

Anyway I hope you take all of this into consideration and you can someday make your dream game anon.

I haven't played BotW but SotC is 35 square miles.

It is a hella small map, but like I mentioned, it makes clever of use of 3 things:

>small character model for the player
>slow movement speed
>lightning and backgrounds are area specific to give each area a distinct look

That last one is easy to notice, as sometimes these elements will change abruptly, especially in the HD remaster, where the draw distance was increased. It is a very well made game that makes the best out of what it has but you'll have a hard time adapting it to a Sonic game if you still want 2 f4st.

Is Eggman a villain or an anti-hero?

I mean, he's obviously been behind a lot of the shit that goes on in most games, but I'd say that at this point he's saved the world almost as many times as he's put it in danger.

What are his motivations? At first it was at least easy to say "oh well but he's using animals to built robots!" But have you even seen the latest games? Animals don't even come out of the robots when you destroy them anymore, except in Lost World, and you don't even destroy any capsules in any of the games either. So he doesn't even do that.

Hell, he hasn't done it since SA2. I mean, the robots you destroy in that game are all G.U.N, so if anything you'd have to wonder why Sonic and company haven't been stopping G.U.N from doing that.

His motivations are to conquer the world, plaster his face on half the buildings and charge ludicrous admission fees to upkeep the maintenance on the global theme park he's making.

He's quirky and has a tendency for getting himself too deep into his plots that they start hindering prime directive, but he's just a straight up villain with a lot of personality flaws.

More evil than Wily because at least Wily has personal stake, but less evil than Black Doom, for example.

The one thing about the Fleetway series that truly bugged me, was how they changed the design for Robotnik.
They had a perfectly on model Eggman, and they made the design menacing enough on it's own, and out of nowhere they just decide he needs to look like he's from AoStH instead of the game art.
