Water nations are inherently weak. Not because of their troops, though units that can't be used against >90% (literally) of nations is bad design. Not because of their mages, though "being X but underwater" is a terrible gimmick. But because of terrain.

Water provinces are strategically different to land provinces: you always have MM:1, you always have a multitude of neighbors, and your lands are always treated as a natural barrier.

As a natural barrier, they are spread out between landmasses, so a nation that mostly owns water provinces will be spread artificially thin; though their territory may only be ~20 provinces, they will own large, long provinces of ocean that border half-a-dozen other nations and have 4 land-connections each.

Not only that, they will take much longer to traverse than similarly sized land-based nations, have less population, and severely restrict site diversity.

Finally, since maps are made with land-nations in mind, water provinces are often severely limited in number. As water nations can at best recruit national units and commanders from the coast, this restricts their production capability, especially its expansion. A water nation that successfully conquers a land nation may have double the gems and triple the gold, but they'll still only have as many mage-recruiting sites as they started with, bar forting more UW provinces; not an issue that land nations are troubled with.

There are things that modders have done to improve the lot of the UW nation, but frankly, UW nations should just be made into land nations until the whole terrain issue is fixed.
>>
>>175666438
There is a whole slew of arguments as to why UW nations are pseudo-balanced due to all the points you've listed, but foodcoma is hitting me hard right now and I'm gonna take a nap.

>>
>>175668274
During the expansion phase? If you prioritize it over oceanic provinces you start producing mages and troops later than other nations. If you wait until you've started on your first fort, it's probably been taken already.

also the one time I tried they called me calamari and bullied me back into the sea
>>
>>175668805
>During the expansion phase?

During the whole game.

>If you prioritize it over oceanic provinces you start producing mages and troops later than other nations.

Why is that?

>also the one time I tried they called me calamari and bullied me back into the sea

Don't let them bully you. Remind them that unless they plan on paying another aquatic-capable nation to kill you attacking you means they will have to deal with you raiding them for the entire remainder of the game. If I see uw-fags on land and I have no means to go uw and fuck them up I usually let them keep their land. Better than creating a bitter enemy that I can never fully defeat.
>>
>if a unit with regeneration gets diseased, they don't lose HP but continually gain afflictions until they're worthless
Glad I learned this before my event-gained Circle Master died. He became Mute but I empowered him and cast Blood Feast to cure him so now I just gotta hunt up 140 more virgins and I'll have my first Earthblood Stone.
>>175669113
>During the whole game.
But the issue is that you can recruit absolutely nothing from non-coastal provinces and barely anything from coastal provinces, in a game where maps are primarily land; other nations get more forts that can recruit more mages, and more troops when they conquer another nation, UW nations don't.
>Why is that?
Because UW nations can't recruit their best units from the coast if they can recruit from the coast at all.
>[the rest]
Fortunately for them the other UW nation decided it didn't like my squidface and killed me less than a year afterward.
>>
>>175670198
>Because UW nations can't recruit their best units from the coast if they can recruit from the coast at all.

You blob on land mostly and use the money from that to make underwater forts. Were you under the impression that I said you shouldn't take any UW provinces at all??
>>
>>175670775
No, I was saying that if you go after land provinces before water provinces, which is what you'll need to do to get there before land nations, you will not be able to start up an UW fort as quickly as a land nation can start up a land fort.
>>
>>175671069
That's not true though unless you are rolling in the dosh for some reason and can build more forts than there are easy-to-take uw provs in your capring.

>Because UW nations can't recruit their best units from the coast if they can recruit from the coast at all.
MA R'lyeh and MA Pelagia's better land fighters are coastal, and MA Atlantis's research mages are coastal. Oceania gets essentially the same stuff on coasts that they get UW. Therodos and Ys are primarily coastal nations, essentially, with more out of coasts than UW. Getting most of your stuff UW only is the exception rather than the rule.

What maps do you play on? The ones that I've used don't have enough water provinces in one place to have a cap-ring composed solely of them, and the map generator has to be specifically tailored to produce an RNG-map that does.
>>175672341
Oceania and Ys are exceptions. Atlantis, R'lyeh, and Pelagia can only get good mages UW. For R'lyeh's troops, you're right though. Therodos is a freespawn nation (though even then its best spawns are UW) and not a typical UW nation.
>>
>>175673290
>Atlantis, R'lyeh, and Pelagia can only get good mages UW
Atlantis's labrats are coastal. It'd probably be better for them if they could get battle mages on coasts and their researchers UW, but there's a whole lot more I'd change about that nation first. Point is, though, that they do really can use coasts. R'lyeh's starchildren are generally their go to mage anyways. Slave mages are expensive, and if you're fighting a land war you need only so many big W mages.

The coastal changes really did help with giving UW nations benefits from taking coastal provinces.

Pictured: the worst map ever made in dominions for balance. Somehow, fucking somehow, someone made something trashier than damn Latus.
>>
>>175672732
I'm no UW master but most UW nations don't want to expand solely UW for the reason that doing so would lead them to having a spaghetti shaped border that takes years to traverse at map move 1.

My point is to avoid having weird borders and becoming irrelevant UW nations should expand on land significantly. Obviously this doesn't mean they should have 0 UW provs. They should get enough UW provs to produce the units they need. It's not impossible to balance this out. Send, say, 2 expansion parties on land and 1 expansion party to take on the easier UW indies. Now you have reasonable borders and enough dosh to make forts in your uw provs.

If some landlubber uses mercs or some shit to enter your pool you forcefully push him aside later.

>>175673290
>>
>>175678220
It's not THAT bad for small games without sailing
>>
>>175678383
Sailing is literally required on the map though, otherwise you can get stuck on a 2-province isle blocked off from the rest of the world by Zeus.

Literally worse than Flatus. But someone reminded my the Uropia map existed, which actually just puts non-sailing nations on complete isles with 0 way off, so I guess it isn't the worst.
>>
>>175678750
I think the map is shit too, but if I'll give it some optimism and assume those anchors with the black lines are supposed to represent harbors and land troops can cross there like if there was a bridge on other maps.
>>
>>175679143
This is true, but that doesn't stop you from spawning at the upper-rightmost land province, with a throne right beneath you - effectively cutting you off from everything unless you have sailing.

Or from starting on the waste at the bottom left side of the map, with the harbor province a 3-throne.
>>
>>175679143
Set starting locations, you can get stuck starting on that bottom left swamp and get walled in by the nation that spawned above you. Or you can start at the top of that right island and have to crawl through 2 mountains and a swamp only to get blocked by that nation who spawned in the bottom swamp.

>>
>>175681531
I like it too
>>
>>175683320
Summod buffs the shit out of them, but in vanilla they're barely stronger than uw nations and even then you rely on people not knowing what devils are.

Alternatively rush harder.
>>
>>175683320
Abyssia is also my favorite nation despite them not being very strong.
>>
>>175686996
This was without summod, I know it makes them way better. I should have rushed harder, and probably not went after bats at all. I might have been able to rush down Mictlan, even Lanka would have have been a better choice. I should have grabbed a n9 bless as well, and possibly an e4 or even as high as e9. I think n9e9 would be an interesting bless for all your sacred evo spammers who would otherwise really suffer from fatigue and be vulnerable to RoS or being attacked by bats. The extra protection would give them a chance to cast a scripted fire blast to counter some flying units which would be neat, or let their heat at least do something, and the reinvig would seriously help burning ones.

>>175687452
I think I would have done much better with a better designed pretender. I focused my pretender on blood to try and use it for late game, but I think using nature and earth would have been better overall for a lot of reasons. I also should have taken production 3/order 2 I think, maybe even order 1 and tried for some magic. You need scales badly because of your stupid expensive troops so its hard to say for sure. overall 4/5 bretty fun
>>
>>175688015
Yeah good scales are pretty needed for abysia. Research is shit until you get lightless lanterns, after that your research is pretty strong.
>>

Alright, but some of these battles aren't mine.
1. Fast. Sauro (maybe a good player) vs marv (totally a noob). It was a deadly "accidental" bump for sauro.
2. DSDS3. TNN (malakal) vs Ulm (random player). Malakal in his superior diplomatic advantage convinced Ulm's maidens to surrender their virginities to him.

EA Ulm doesn't have mage support. Instead they have Rain of Stones and good, stealthy troops.

Made a bold play that didn't work out. Saw that TNN was building to rushdown Ulm's walls, tried to cutoff the backrow prov to prevent him from being able to easily retreat.

He split his armies into two, with half hitting Ulm proper and the others into where the sneaky army hit.

If you deal fire damage to a B9 unit, and the damage gets reflected, does it get reflected as general damage or as fire damage? Same for physical or otherwise. Does having high prot, for instance, and hitting a B9 unit cause the returned damage to be mitigated by prot?

f you're talking about LA Lentia then yes, they have rec-anywhere sacreds, but I was talking about EA Lentia.

By the way, the version of LA Lentia you have available at Dom3mods, v1.00, uses the same monster ID (4098) twice, once for Lampreyids, and once for Pearl Lords. Currently, Accelerate the Experiments produces 16+ Pearl Lords per cast. Definitely a failure, but not in the way the spell describes it.
Accelerate the Experiments is a weird spell. If it can be perfectly replicated and is actually pretty useful, is it really a failure?

>why didn't the eagles ride the ships to mordor?

>>175726598
If we came up with a sizeable number of achievements with exact pre-requisites (for example, "Pyrrhic victory" could be 5000 gold/200 gems higher losses than the opponent), it might be interesting to have a game with house rules of victor being the one with most achievement points (the old-fashioned victory would of course also grant an achievement). A balancing act between trying to win and making unconventional strategical choices (like assassin pretender) as well as effectively sabotaging yourself with some of the achievements like Pyrrhic victory.
>>
>>175730553
For example, suppose you had the following achievements that would be easy to get if you attempt to lose:
>Untapped Potential: Have 300 design points left over, 10 achievement points
>Do Not Pass Go: Be the first player to lose, 10 achievement points
>Master of Magic: Design your pretender with two paths of magic at 10, 10 achievement points

And then somehow manage to squeeze something like these with some kind of asshole batman kind of design as elf nation:
>My Pretender is Better than your Pretender: Assassinate enemy pretender with yours, 10 achievement points
>Hunter of Heroes is getting hungry: Reach 500 kills with one of your heroes in Hall of Fame, 10 achievement points
>The First Empire: Be the first player to reach 50 provinces (a tough achievement to get if you also intend to lose)

At that point you'd have 60 achievement points and the remaining players might have to really start pursuing achievements like Diving Benevolence if they want to overtake your lead. And if it looks like deliberately losing first might be an actual legit strategy, you could make a meta-strategical decision of actually playing serious and letting other players ruin themselves while you can take the rest without content and then win.

I think it might be interesting, although really difficult to organize (would probably take a non-playing admin to check turn files and verify players actually achieved what they claim to have achieved).

Damage returned by blood vengeance is not typed. I've tested fire resistant units using fire damage against BV, they die just the same.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't even get DRN rolls, you just directly take the same amount of damage your opponent took.

I wasn't saying they're weak, I was saying that if they're cap-only and you have no other incentives (sacred summons/thugs/communion slaves) there's no logical reason to invest in a bless.
>Should I change the numbers for Accelerate the Experiments
Let me put it this way:
>Wallshaker: Constr. 4, 15 Air gems, 1 A3 mage turn
25 siege power.
>Summon Ogres: Conj. 2, 10 Earth gems, one E1 mage turn
16 siege power.
>Summon Leogryphs: Conj. 4, 10 Nature gems, 1 N2 mage turn
41 siege power.
>Accelerate the Experiments: Alt. 1, 3 Nature gems, 1 N1 mage turn
~99 siege power.

I'm not saying it's overpowered, but it is noticeably better than anything else in the game for its cost.

>>
>>175770639
Not only is that wrong, it's not even really comparable.

Vicars were the main rec-anywhere of Aunuland; there are precisely 6 assassins with Blood magic. 3 of them are unique, 1 of them is a pretender chassis, and the one that isn't Mictlan exclusive is a cap-only.

Even if you can counter one D2 assassin, how many commanders can you outfit? Will you give gems to every mage, can you even produce as many gems as Aunuland can mages? How do you handle it when they start popping up in your lightly defended provinces two at a time, like elves? If you force them to battle (good luck) how do you deal with them being better skellyspammers than C'tis?
>>
>>175769258

So LA TC seems really cool, I just have no idea on how to get them into late game. Mid game they seems crazy cool with RoS solid battle magic and great paths/cross paths for summons but once it gets into late game bull shittery they seem useless. Only thing I could come up with was a Lich with a little nature (bleh) to get into tarts. You know take advantage of the fact they can actually get moonvines natively.
>>
Are the odds of a province having a site separate from one another or is it all together? I just found 4 sites with one mage and I'm wondering if it's worth searching for more.
>>
>>175775994
No idea test it out. Make a map with 1000 provinces and site search each one and let us know the results experiment performed at least 10 times. :^)
>>
>>175775994
Depends. Some provinces are marked to have a better chance to have magical sites (you can check the relevant files to find out which), sometimes you just get lucky. Throne provinces are always marked to have a better chance to have magic sites.

Plains have betters odds for astral sites, forests for nature, swamps for death and water, wastes for death and fire, mountains for air and earth, water for water, earth, fire, and death.

Manual could tell you more.
>>
>>175777489
Even in a "many sites" province, or otherwise high site province, >4 sites is very unlikely.

Not impossible, but statistically you're better off searching elsewhere instead.

Yes, bats said I was trying to vulture. But I was not. And there was a period after I got elfed where bats looked ok and I was content to leave them alone. But I was contacted by Nief, who said the bats had taken almost all of his stuff, and bats sent a few testing raiding parties my way. Basically the entire game I was at war with bats or being elfed. Now that Nief is AI and I can't siege Xib's cap due to Onaqui assassins casting Swarm, his placement on the map along with his battiness means he'll be able to get Nief's territory.

Also I actually haven't cast Acashic Record cause I wanted Kinnaras, I'll do a couple casts and post them, I already submitted this turn. Also I'll leave the admin the option of looking for a sub, though I can't imagine who'd want to.
>>

Not sure if double bless is the way to go for LA TC.

Celestial Servants are shit no matter what you do, Prot 4 is too shitty. They won't last longer than Vine Ogres which are cheaper, no matter the bless.

Ancestor Vessels are passable but worth a double bless? Could get 2+ normal heavy horsemen for the price if you buy some Prod.

Even if you go with that build, I'd put 1 Dom point into S2, to be able to teleport. And maybe, not sure, 2->3 order for going 1 drain

Nixies aren't magic beings.
Leprechauns are bafflingly useless; they have no special traits (except 0 upkeep), they don't open up any new magic, they're not particularly good units, and they don't even have a better leader than what you can recruit.
Alee is an Astral powerhouse rivaled in EA only by R'lyeh and Marverni but they don't do anything with it. No national spells, no national summons, not even Fortune Teller. The closest thing they have to Astral-related units are the Cloud Sprites, but that's flavored as Air-based.

Non-issues that I felt were noteworthy:
Sylphs are remarkably well balanced. They expand well if you can afford them, and they also raid well, but since Sylphs struggle against even basic infantry if they're equipped with spears and/or armor, and you need at least a small numbers advantage to be extremely effective (which at 17g per can get expensive), they're not the end-all-be-all for Alee's armies.
The Faerie Dragon is so cute I did a double-take when I saw that it was otherwise identical to a normal dragon, firebreath and all.
The Pixie Queen is well-priced, extremely comparable to similar cap-only StRs like Crones of Avalon and Grand Masters.
Spriggan Berserkers have so little HP that they rarely get to benefit from their Berserk, but I find this a non-issue because they don't cost much more than a normal Spriggan.
It's humorously fitting that Nixies, who "dwell in and protect pristine ponds and lakes" have no darkvision, since they live in water where it's unnecessary.
I like the juxtaposition between fully benefiting from your Air mages, and fully benefiting from your flying and/or ranged units.
Until you get some serious buffs up, their troops are mostly useless in a straight, protracted fight; they melt to evocations, arrows, and anything with enough attack to hit them. Considered a non-issue because half of Alee's army flies and all of it is stealthy, so they can pick their fights.
>>

IIRC that is an "intended feature/mechanic" of the developer's original branch.
>>
You know how a bunch of nations with bad cap-only sacreds have lore to the effect of "they're special bodyguards for the cap-only StR"?

Why are they always dudes in armour so heavy that they would reduce the cap-only StR to MM1 if you actually used them?

Why don't the cap-only StRs just get, for example, 1d3 of them as battle-summons?
>>
>>175792437
Malakal is a skilled diplomat with a pennchant for well-executed backstabs. Dominions' multiplayer doesn't show you who is who, so you don't know which nation is being played by malakal.
>>
>>175760571
>I was saying that if they're cap-only and you have no other incentives (sacred summons/thugs/communion slaves) there's no logical reason to invest in a bless.
It's worth taking a bless for cap-only sacreds on their own if they're good.

All of EA Lentia mages are sacred as well. How many reasons to take a bless do you need?

>siege power
While I agree that 5 siege power on a summon that costs about on par with wolves is crazy, most of those alternatives have benefits outside their siege power.

Ogres and leogryphs are decent troops rather than dead weight like Lampreyids. Wall Shaker lets the user spam fear in combat, and can be moved around much more easily.

Also, you missed Cave Grubs, 64 siege power for 8 earth gems and a E1 mage turn.
>>
>>175768589
>>175769258
Tested to see how it plays out in MA, Agartha gets the earth plain to itself. Better bring your AN attacks because it'll be statue city.

EACaelum in a game I'm hosting is able to spam thunderstrike with 2a1w mages and no item/hero/storm power support.

>>
>>175828986
Yes
>>
is it a safe strategy against bad luck events to script your pretender to Retreat so that he doesn't risk dying if some indies surprise-attack a province where he's located without any army?
>>
>>175828986
You can cast thunderstrike at A2 with an air gem.

It's a good anti-rush strategy, means you get it far earlier than normal.
>>
>>175829383
How?
>>
>>175829470
You put a gem on the mage
the mage will use the gem to boost his path level so that he can cast the spell
if he has gems left over, he will use them to reduce his fatigue when casting the spell, up to his unboosted path level.

And A2 can cast Summon Air Elemental for 50 fatigue by spending 2 gems, one to boost himself to A3 and one to reduce the fatigue to half. An A2 cannot cast Storm with gems, because he cannot boost to A4 with his 2 gems.
>>
>>175829629
My God, I feel like such a noob. I had no idea it is possible to use gems for spells without a gem cost.
>>
>>175829712
You and most Dominions players m8, 90% of the mechanics that can save your ass or win you the game are hidden
>>
>>175829629
Question, does it only raise their level for that one spell or for the whole battle?
>>
>>175829804
That one spell. For E1 and F1s, you can use the gem to cast Epower or Phoenix Power and then the boost will be permanent
>>
>>175829274
Yes. I do it for all my sitesearching mages. Put him at the back of the field as well.

>>175829804
For that spell only.
>>
>>175829383
>>175829629
Awesome, thank you.
>>
>>175829712
If it makes you feel better, I played for about half a year before I figured it out. It's not usually optimal to do that, so that wrinkle kinda fall through most beginners guides/is so situational you may not see it.

>>175829804
That spell which is why it's horribly for one effect spells, but can be really useful for buffs i.e. casting soul vortex on a D2 Formorian King or Personal Regeneration on a big mage with an N1 random (subbed for someone once who just had N1 on his pretender no clue why, just used gems and presto regen)
>>
>>175806312
>Leprechauns are bafflingly useless; they have no special traits (except 0 upkeep), they don't open up any new magic, they're not particularly good units, and they don't even have a better leader than what you can recruit.
- Leprechauns now produce 2 gold per month
- Grand Leprechaun now produces 10 gold per month, has a 10% chance to neutralize a bad event, curses the enemy that killed him, and has N1S1
Will these changes be good?
I'm also planning to add some Astral-related stuff.
>>
>>175832512

Whats the cost of a leprechaun? Because 2g/month could quickly get ridiculous if they are easy to mass.
>>
>>175832802
Each casting summons 15 normal leprechauns and 1 grand leprechaun. Costs 8 nature gems. Requires N3. Research level 2. Yeah, sounds like it could get ridiculous.
>>
>>175832963
If sounds extremely OP. The difference between "0 upkeep" and "gives 1 gold per month" (let alone 2) is HUGE. Don't implement this ability. Other than that, your ideas look good to me. In fact, you didn't even need to buff regular leprechauns; buffing grand leprechauns might be enough, since they're summoned by the same spell.
>>
>>175833073
Alright, thanks! I'll just remove this ability from the leprechauns, but leave the gold income for the grand leprechaun.
>>
>>175833123
What do leprechauns even do?
>>
>>175833259
Just slap and shrink enemies. They exist solely because I wanted a summon that can slap-shrink.
>>
>>175833295
Maybe you could give them chance to cause good events like firebirds? Or maybe script some event that causes you to find one of their pots of gold.
>>
>>175833549
>cause good events like firebirds
This doesn't seem to be a moddable command. Maybe only by using #copystats. I think I'll do the event thing, I liked this idea.
>>
>>175833549
I don't see why they should be buffed further. An astral mage for a pure nature spell is alone extremely powerful. It ALSO produces 10 gold per month, ALSO is a fortune teller, ALSO curses thugs, ALSO comes with some soldiers. It should maybe be nerfed further.
>>
>>175798367
False. Vulturing is taking provinces from a dying player without resistance. I was taking provinces from a (I hoped) living player and asking you to focus your energy elsewhere, and survive. I brought plenty of troops to help attack you (which you were barely able to scratch) but then felt bad cause I thought you were about to die, and at first I just wanted you to be weaker. But obviously that was before the rest of the alliance collapsed, I got elfed, you almost killed Nief, etc.
>>
>>175833684
I mean the regular ones, not the mage.
>>
>>175833759
It doesn't matter, they come together. If you buff one, you also buff the other.
>>
>>175833684
>An astral mage for a pure nature spell is alone extremely powerful.
Alee has plenty of astral and nature already (unless they've been drastically changed since I last saw them). N1S1 mages are basically useless for them, even if 8 gems is cheap for a mage summon.

10 gold per turn is not worthwhile for 8 gems investment, and I'm not hearing a good reason why you'd want anything else it gives.
>>
We need more modnation games.
>>
>>175834239
My bad, I didn't know it was for a nation with plenty of astral already. I wouldn't nerf the spell then, but I certainly wouldn't buff it further for now, I would wait for more feedback after playing.
>>
I just thought of the cheesiet big thug/mini SC counter ever. If the thug has an open spot just give a chaff commander a lycanthrope amulet and when he dies the enemy will pick it up, boom thug you can't buff anymore.
>>
>>175835110
Is it picked up after fights?

I know some cursed items were made unrecoverable because people would send slave collar suicide missions to fuck up enemy mages.
>>
>>175825190
>It's worth taking a bless for cap-only sacreds on their own if they're good.
My threshold for that is White Centaurs. Weresharks are not on the same level.

Also I would not take the same bless for a sacred unit that I would for a mage-priest.
>>175829741
More like "hidden". The manual explains a huge amount, ingame there are informative popups for almost every mouse-over and click, and there are entire threads full of useful advice about non-intuitive parts of the game.
>>175832512
I'm glad you're updating Alee, it's my second favorite of your nation (after MA Nerita). I'm also happy you're taking my suggestions into consideration. But as the other anon said, there is a huge difference between "I have no particular reason to summon these units" and "more efficient than alchemy for converting gems to gold".

The reason I have no desire to summon Leprechauns is due to their physical traits. They're fairly normal relative to the rest of Alee and their leader is also nothing special. The major difference was their rare weapon, which wasn't enough incentive to summon them, especially since it caps at 1 damage per hit.

Frankly, I would have been happy if you had made the Grand Leprechaun a better leader than anything Alee could recruit; that alone would have been incentive enough in my opinion. That said, I think the Fortuneteller, deathcurse, and N1S1 are good changes, yes.

You might have already known this, and it won't come up much in a game, but all of Alee's 1 enc units reach 0 enc at EXP 4.
>>
how does lanka fare in summod?
and in sumME?
>>
>>175838027
>My threshold for that is White Centaurs. Weresharks are not on the same level.
So you're going to run full scales lentia or something just because your sacreds aren't top 5 in the entire game?

A single major bless is cheap, you can take it and still have great scales. There's no reason not to do so unless your sacreds are garbage-tier or your troops are amazing.

>Also I would not take the same bless for a sacred unit that I would for a mage-priest.
There are blesses that work for both. E9 would be amazing for mage-priests and still decent on weresharks. N9 is helpful for everything, especially shrouded thugs/SCs later.
>>
>>175838027
>I'm glad you're updating Alee, it's my second favorite of your nation (after MA Nerita). I'm also happy you're taking my suggestions into consideration
I'm always happy to hear feedback and do adjustment. I'm at best mediocre at the game myself, but I love creating content.
>>
>>175838968
>So you're going to run full scales lentia or something just because your sacreds aren't top 5 in the entire game?
Not full scales, but any bless would be incidental.
>>175838968
>N9 is helpful for everything, especially shrouded thugs/SCs later.
That goes for literally every nation though.
>>
>>175832963

So on top of everything you would get 40g per turn for a 8N summon. This is not game breaking, even if you invest all your N gems into that you could feasibly maybe drop 200-300N so thats 1200g per turn? Good but not game breaking or massive.

It could be a nice bonus for the nation so I am not opposed. Alternatively fortune bringer and event maker works too.
>>
>tfw no timeout box that doesn't kill whoever's contained via monster attacks
I just want to make spell that causes an event that traps the weak-willed in the faery lands
>>
Fugg, forgot to do turns and now I staled for a week, time to go AI XDDD
>>
>>175835868
Lycantrope amulet can be picked up unless that's been changed at some point.

But it won't always be, same as any item there's a chance of disappearing when carrier dies. Not sure how big this is exactly.

The thug user can still retreat that guy to non-combat duty and give the items forward, unless it's deep in enemy territory without stealth/flight. And stronger guys are less likely to have open Misc slots.

But there's definitely a niche where it works. There's still the usual problem of catching the thug, if you know where it's coming you could likely send a mage(s) capable of killing it as well.
>>
>>175840365
Did you know that the value for the #banished command is a province number, with various negative values being special provinces with odd effects? Try playing around with these, or maybe ask Lambert.

>>175841238

I heard the chance of a random enemy commander picking up an item is 20% per item "level", i.e. trinkets is 20%, lesser items is 40% up to 100% for artifacts.
>>
>>175834569
>what is VegetableWarriors
>>
>>175835110
It's easily countered by using up all misc slots. But theoretically it could work for thug/SCs without full misc slots.
>>175835868
Wait so is it confirmed that cursed items don't get picked up anymore? It would be hilarious if you could "donate" 2 eyesocket items and make an SC blind by this method.
>>
>>175835868
>>175841895
I just tested it out with 20 slave collars and 2 comm without sic slots. None were picked up. Cursed items are not picked up upon victory.
>>
>>175842095
That's pretty gay. It sounded like a pretty cool innovative method.
>>
>>175841895
>Wait so is it confirmed that cursed items don't get picked up anymore?
I'm fairly sure slave collars don't.

I'm unsure if it was just a fix to that specific item, or to every cursed item.
>>
>>175842282
Oh wait I just tested with lycan amulet. IT WORKED.

I think it's specific for slave collars only.
>>
>>175841639
Happened literally years ago.
>>
>>175842363
It's item specific, eyes of any kind aren't picked up, nor are Lifelong protections or Soul Contracts. I'm pretty sure. Not sure how many cursed items are pickable, inspector doesn't differentiate. At least the ring of the shapeshifter dwarf pretender is pickable, iirc.

Can I tap you guys for something? This summer's iteration of the VGL will be using PES17, which touts player portraits as a new feature. Basically, they're 128x128 pictures of a player that show up on the game plan. I've already made portraits for a few of our players, and I've got two possible placeholder portraits for those without a portrait, but I'd like to see if you guys don't have some pictures you think would work well as portraits. I can do some cropping and editing if necessary, just remember it's a small picture so it can't be too detailed. Several portraits, like erf snek and Forester Bob, are just in-game sprites, so those will probably work well. If you have some time to spare(I know you do), feel free to look at our roster at https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//domg/ and suggest portraits. I've got portraits for our gold, silver and GK players already, but am kind of stuck when it comes to most of the others.

Also I should probably update the player descriptions sometime, they're based on the previous roster.

Trying to help design a pretender for my brother to play in our group of friends' MP game. He's going EA Abysia.

It's only my second MP game, and we're playing now with summod, so I'm not sure how I did. Any feedback?
>>
>>175898203
Abysia already has superior fire access so fire is effectively worthless path on the pretender as F5 doesn't offer anything you don't already have by default (Annointed of Rhuax has F4 and has E1, enough for casting Children of Rhuax national spell so you don't need pretender for that purpose either). If those were the magical paths you wanted, the choice of pretender seems economical, but since you don't need fire (E4 however is an excellent choice as Abysia), Myrmecolion probably isn't the pretender of choice.

As for scales, Abysia is hungry for gold and resources so good scales are a logical choice in this sense and misfortune is a reasonable dump scale with Order. However, there's a complication: Abysia is a one-dimensional nation that does fire and heavy infantry really really well but doesn't really do anything else which leaves you extremely vulnerable after midgame once enemies can counter your limited tactical repertoire. You can try to counteract this in one of two ways: capitalize on your sacreds to gain a decisive advantage while you're relevant (N9 and W9 are good blesses, minor Earth is also very valuable as mentioned) or try to gain some endgame potency from your pretender (MA Abysia does this better but one option would be dormant pretender for crafting Soul Contracts). However, there's no obvious winning strategy either that I can think of so going scales and hoping Abysia's strengths carry you through is also an option, a scales pretender like yours. However, if I was to use a scales strategy, fire doesn't do much so I'd rather look at other pretenders like Monument that can afford E4 and a path you already don't have complete access to.

If Magic Expanded was also in play, something similar to your pretender actually could be considered ideal because it adds some national globals that Annointed of Rhuax just barely can't cast without lucky randoms, making that one extra point of fire a boon.

Elf-fish did nothing wrong. It's just necessary for survival. And fits the general grim tone of LA well.
>>
>>175906445
the "general grim tone of LA" is mostly just the fading of "easy" magic. That is, magic that doesn't draw its power from sacrifice.

That a lot of nations were previously populated by inherently magical beings just means that subjectively, civilization is dying out. The world itself is doing fine; in a certain sense, it's even doing better than ever. The truly world-shaking powers are long gone, after all.

Ichytids just get shafted extra hard; they get a combo of the violent annihilation that the Aboleths got, in addition to the slow decline of almost everyone else.

Poison damage is coded in a way that makes resisting it trivial with any kind of poison resistance. So I seriously doubt it.

In fact consider adding some kind of acid or petrification attacks too to make it on par with other nations. Poison alone doesnt go well as C'tis can attest.

Or another pirate using the same key. I've seen that happen once.
>>
>>175933297

I can expand on my point.

Poison damage is spread over time. If you receive a poison 15 hit it translates into something like 2-2-2-2etc per turn. So 5 pr negates all that and more.
>>
>>175934728
I was just wondering because it fucks shit up in conquest of elysium yet I never see it do anything in dominions.
>>
>>175934728
You're totally wrong. A weapon doing 35 poison damage vs a poison res 30 target will do exactly same amount of poison damage as a 5 poison weapon hitting a non-resistant target.

If you have no clue what you're talking about you should shut up, nobody needs more disinformation on game mechanics.
>>
>>175934886
Decay is god tier in CoE. Certain kill if it isn't regenerating.
>>
>>175932025
>>175934728
You are completely incorrect.

PR negates poison damage when it's applied, not when you take damage.

15 poison damage on a target with 5 poison resist will do 10 damage total.

>>175933297
He's wrong.

Poison damage does have some big problems, though.

First is that it's the most or second most commonly resisted type of damage (maybe beaten out by cold resistance). Undead are basically immune, which is already a massive number of things which you can't do anything to.

Second is that it takes way too long to take effect. It takes 10 turns before all the damage is applied. Battles can easily be decided in less than 10 turns.

Third is that most of the sources of poison in vanilla do 5 damage, which is easily negated by poison resistance buffs, so poison becomes worthless once those go up.

Poison damage
Poison works differently than fire or cold. If a unit takes poison damage, that damage will be suffered
over multiple rounds, which is the amount of time it takes the poison to have its effect. This damage is
spread out as evenly as possible. First, a total amount of damage taken is calculated, just like with any
attack. Then, each combat round, a unit will take 10% of the remaining damage.
So if a unit takes 15 points of poison damage, it will take 2,2,2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 points of damage (each
number is in one round). In the first three rounds it will take 2 points per round, and in the last seven
rounds it will take 1 point per round. The first turn the unit takes 10% of 15, or 2 points, and now 13
remain. The next turn it takes another 2, and another 2 on the third turn. That leaves 9 points, and 10%
of that is 1, for the remaining 9 turns

From the manual

What is the best 4 arms chassis to give 2 copper arms and 6 of these and a pair of those boots that makes you fly in order to wreck enemy mages/priests?
>>
>>175951510
They're okay thugs. Basically, there's two use cases for a thug - when you need to turn gems into raided provinces and when you need to use gear to kill a particular enemy or hold an enemy up. If you need to hit a golem with some smashers, they're a-okay because they have 13 attack. When you need to raid PD, they can use light gear since they have 30 HP, no encumbrance, and a heat aura. Since they can't self buff, you may need to give them an armor item which makes the gear bit more expensive than the peak thugs like ponymen or skrattir which need only a brand and a vine shield

tl;dr yes

bandar log has so much cool stuff they can set up in the late game
but their expansion is so painful without awake expander and/or prod scales, and it feels to me like high prod is counter to basically everything else the nature is good at (turmoil/growth/sloth/magic/luck)

but it's hard to survive and get big enough early enough that you can realistically leverage the more powerful monkey astral summons (which cost an arm and a leg and 90 pearls)...everybody wants to pick on you early, really early, before getting astral spam up...and it's not like bandar is super strong when that first comes online anyways. So for these various combined reasons, neighbors are highly able and incentivized to fuck you up while you cannot do much about it, and while your expansion is worse than most nations.

why can't the intolerant people of the world let the nice monkeys get to a nice lategame position so they can start doing monkey stuffs :<

sorry for the confusion, these things happen when you're just 10000 monkeys and typewriters in a room randomly generating seemingly coherent written language
>>
>>175963572
Don't tunnel-vision on the summons, the monkeys have a lot of other stuff they can pull. Berserking lucky markata with strength of giants and iron bane being one example - they won't be useful if the enemy expects them since they're animals with low MR, but you can recruit them from any forest for 5g1r.
>>
>>175963572
BL is great early. Tiger Riders beat white centaurs and vans (both individually and at power/gold)
>>

>>
>>175965452

>>
>>175964280

yeah they can defintely do some cute things with their super cheap chaff and some protection buff, berserkers, etc. Berserk and panic particularly useful as they are incidentally picked up from thaum most of the time, both spells can be pretty impressive. Access to national elephant shenanigans ready to hand, though without high air backup until very late it can still make for a nasty squad or two out of left field.

The animal troops/mages is a real problem of course...and the stealthy units and commanders while useful for harassment are much more trash than most nations' stealth raiders....and the mages that could buff them are not stealthy.

>>175965418
I often take at least a bit of a bless for mages and the riders, plus white ones aren't the worst if you expect your troops to idle a bit, though mm1 is pretty close to the worst. Without an awake expander and/or bless I find them really really hard to expand with, and even with a bless it takes so long to assemble the first few squads of tigers. I first used to only do a very bless-centered strat but have started moving awa from that. That said I have barely tried the production route though I've heard some people vouch for it...it just seems so counter to the nation.

Transformation is one of my favorite things to do with bandar but that comes pretty late

What's your opinion on Patala?
>>
I've won a duel and a 4 player blitz with BL, and I honestly think that tiger riders are strong enough to justify a double or even a triple bless in smaller games. If I were to take a monobless for them, I'd boosh for W9, even though it's less effective than N9 for their mages or infantry lineholders. N9 mono tigers also should be able to expand without any issues.
>>
>>175966104
it's a given that naga waifus = best waifus, but they're expensive as fuck to maintain and you pay for a lot of cute/weird stats that rarely see use, like their gaze attack (which to be fair can be really nice sometimes, especially if the naga is unscripted and faces an assassination attempt). I prefer summoning the nagas from MA though even there the are costly and one needs to take care not to over-commit when you're not using their forging/ritual/battlefield prowess. IIRC even the summoned versions of nagas cost gold upkeep (I am not looking at the modinspector right now though, could be false memory).

I haven't played much late age in general though so I don't feel qualified to give a roudned answer about Patala strategy so much as their waifu-suitability. I'd think that given how gem-hungry the nation is in the other ages, the LA monkeys will feel even more gem hungry given the LA scarcity. Also, they're not great at breaking into blood without heros, at least not as early/efficiently as other LA nations.
>>
>>175966104
It's an EA nation that somehow found its way into LA, where it has issues. Nagas are good against superelite dudes, especially with light mage support, and their cap mages are weirdly huge for the era. Their problem is that LA is the era of spammed efficient mages that make their S1 guys no longer special and crossbows that make their troops look bad. You end up feeling like kinda every other LA nation, except with a reliance on indies for your crossbows, expensive crossbow-catchers, and no air or fire magic until you get late game summons. The only thing you've really got going for you is some cap only deep path mages.
>>
>>175966794
yeah there are a lot of major blesses that work very well for tigers, or for mages/tigers. With an eye to lategame it's worth noting that your late summoned sacreds are already easily buffed (or auto-buffed, depending on what you're fielding) with quickness due to their national song spell that affects beings from the heavenly mountain. N9 tigers can do the trick but are kindof underwhelming, but the N9 is of course worht a lot later on too, and the BL national summons are pretty squishy in terms of hp pool if something gets past their awe/mr/defense. Bandar also benefits a lot from the nature globals (who doesn't) so N9 is pretty safe.

but even so those tigers cost a LOT of resources early, which is shockingly slow to get rolling if you're on the sloth plan
>>
water bless and asparas is pretty nice and comes out early too, I use that often (alongside tigers) even though later the w9 is not as useful

asparas are not impressive with n9 at all though because of their 0 protection...really want an offensive bless. I guess I could see some argument for blood or air but not really and never tried it.

also I just remembered a very special feeling. That feeling when
>finally roll out your first three combat communions/mage forces
>everything going as planned, astral magic coming down disabling those superior troops that were just turns ago pushing your shit in
>get to end of scrip
>suddenly all of your monkeys cast blink

Only a noob thinks that guy is even remotely a bad dude or even over optimized. 225 is a cheap price to pay for a stealthy B mage. In honesty he should be 500-600. The fact that it's sacred is only a limiting point to how much you can buy (requiring a temple). Even then it means he has a place outside of assassinations with a bless or whatever. A "unrest causing preacher" is the thinking of a noob. It's superficial. You need to connect the dots to see the true potential of this dude.

>>
So what is the general decision making of when to go for scales and when to go for blessings?
>>
>>176015103
Depends on the nation's sacreds

Great sacreds = double+ bless
Good sacreds (or other need, like golems) = awake bless or scales bless
Bad sacreds = awake scales
>>
>>176015103
It's all about margins. If the points spent on a single bless will net you more assets than points spent on gold scales or magic paths, go for a bless. If you pay the cost twice and get a double bless, you should expect to get twice as many resources that a single bless would get you, or even more.

>>176015421
Is right, there are more factors to consider such as expanding and golems to consider when choosing what to buy on your pretender, but the end goal is the same: empower your nation to gain the most.
>>
>>176015103
If your cap-only sacred units can expand significantly better than your troops with a single major bless, it's almost always worth at least taking that bless.

Whether it's worth taking a stronger bless than that will depend on how good they are, and if you have other sacreds that could benefit (mages, rec-anywhere sacreds, summons, etc).

It can also depend on map and settings - heavy blessrush is much more viable in small games than 20+ player memegames.

When in doubt, go for scales or a N9 bless. Few nations will do terribly with good scales and no bless, many will struggle with poor scales and a bless that isn't very useful because of poor sacreds. N9 is also generically helpful on most everything, though it's often not optimal.

>>176015583
>If you pay the cost twice and get a double bless, you should expect to get twice as many resources that a single bless would get you, or even more.
In my opinion, thinking about it in terms of points is a bad idea. Think about it in terms of what you could get instead.

If the alternative is something which provides little to no performance bonus, it doesn't matter if taking a bless doesn't give you a massive power increase.

are the sacreds worth a bless?
can they accomplish their goal with just one major bless rather than multiple?
what do you plan to expand with?
what kind of resources does my nation lean toward in mid and lategame to buy which units?
what is going to be my mid-game power?

for example you might notice there are some nation that want more money for expensive mages that can cast battle spells, while other are ok with using gems to summon sacred troops and just use less mages to cast buffs and battle enchantments. This also tells you if you want order+misfortune or luck+magic+turmoil for extra gems.

Harbingers are S4 (and even if they weren't you could use a cap-only mage with a S random and a starshine skullcap to reach them).

I'm pretty sure it was the guy wasting gems on fall bears when he could be shitting out thousands of freespawn sacred bears instead.
>>

>>
>>176021481

That was just sacred normal bears which he could either summon with N gems or freespawn with a cheap commander.

Someone suggested he was summoning those bears rather than freespawning them, I said that would be stupid.

I don't actually know if he was summoning the bears, I hope not.

Either that or nobody's been bothering Illwinter about it enough.

Illwinter is releasing floor plan generator soon. And they just kinda happened to create it while working on a roguelike. We can only hope they accidentally make a text editor while working on CoE4 sprites or something.

Also there's no mac torrents that I know of, so I can't even try it out.

mage support

Get an awake Ormr to expand. Money scales, some Prod for Druzhinas, Drain is fine.
Spam Masters of Names, get Stellar Cascades ASAP. After that - evo communions. Astrapelagists for Thunder Strike, Alchemists for Gifts from Heaven and/or Magma Eruption, Occultists for Nether Darts. Wind Guided xbows with Flaming Arrows are alright, too, if your enemy doesn't have Air magic. Occultists are your bloodhunters, and you want Blood fast to summon actual good troops instead of using your crap recruitables.
Your lategame is Blood + pretty much all kinds of buffs (you can communion up mages to cast basically everything). You're very vulnerable to battlefield clears, though, and you'll probably need to summon some bulky mages and/or thugs to deal with RoS traps. Or just cast Astral Corruption and send Horrors at things you don't want to fight.
>>
Hello!
I require a person to substitute for Vancirony, or a person willing to set them AI.

Expansion has unfortunately just ended, so whatever he managed to take is what he took. the nation he took is also the freespawn nation which is unmitigated shit. literally their only redeeming factor is a 2n2b turkey that is hella overcosted.

It's not uncommon for wargames to sell for above AAA-retail price, Dominions 3 also did when it was published by Shrapnel Gaming. The devs come from that background (and aren't business-minded anyhow). In this sense, it's actually cheap.

How the fuck do you beat Marverni once it gets Mother of Oak up and summons 300 B9 pigs a turn

>Use evocation
My mages kill themselves while he summons hundreds of more pigs for free

>Use elementals
Marverni proceeds to not give a fuck and drown elementals in more pigs while I eventually run out of gems

>Use thugs/SCs
They proceed to get soul slayed/stellar cascaded by Marverni's massed S1s that he shits out of every fort.

> - People on Desura liked it, but I do not know how balanced/interesting this one is.
I think it's extremely interesting. Most boosters don't work but you get N4, W3, E3, F3, D2, and S3 on recruit-anywhere, and 0 enc plants are great targets for buffs. The non-Laminarids are fairly useless (size 3+negative reinvig, aquatic+size 3, aquatic, size 4) and their cap-onlys aren't amazing (they seem comparable to other size 4 cap-onlys though), but their summons seem good even though the Octopus Tree is overpriced.

I think it's okay, balance-wise. Only real issue is that you can't gear them to resist EQ or RoS if you need to.
>>
>>176109279
Cast Master enslave.
>>
>>176116463
Thanks a lot! What would you change about non-laminarids? And how much should octopus tree cost?

>>
>>176116721
Currently on my phone so I can't directly compare them, but I think it's comparable to a Tarrasque. The tree has less HP, less prot, no Fear, no Regeneration, and worse attacks. In exchange it gets blunt and pierce resistance, 0 enc, and the vine shield effect.

I'd price it slightly lower than a Tarrasque; 20 gems is a round number, but 22 also seems fair.

As for the other units. Most UW nations have at least one stellar UW-only unit so I won't begrudge you the scorpion thing (though it'd be amazing for a buff - focused Sargassia) but the anemone shambler is dissimilar enough from the other units that using them would be a tactical choice rather than strategic: "would they accomplish what I want" and not "can I afford these objectively superior units". I'd make them poor amphibians.

The ones with land-exhaustion I've never used, so I don't even know how much fatigue they lose per turn.
The kelp-giants are just size 4s with bad stats for anything but evo-catching. They'd probably be useful for a real game, actually.

are you here MAdman Ulm?

>>
>>176153641

Yes, against elite undead. No, not against Ermor.
>>
>>176153641
It's worth the cost of gems against hordes of undead but it's not going to be very impactful (unless you kill longdead with other battlefield clear such that ravenous swarm then starts attacking elites and mages). However, in certain situations it can be immensely valuable. For example, I've taken out plenty of Tartarians with a Pan casting Creeping Doom and then Ravenous Swarm.
>>
>>176153641
Not amazing against ermor, but it's probably still worth the mage turn.
