Recently I got passed the nasty hump of 4k mmr and got a little farther towards 5k. I had calibrated around 3.6 mmr, so I had to grind out that awful 400 but I really stuck to a handful of heroes. I'd try to instalock the Abaddon offlane, and a couple of things would happen.

1.) Either the enemy would pick him first so I'd pick Ancient Apparition to counter him, and just be a Position 5 Support.

2.) Abaddon would get banned so I would go for Phoenix. In my experience, people just below and around 4K mmr panic when their attack speed drops to 0 and the egg is ticking. Sometimes they wise up but you have to communicate and let your team know exactly when you are going in so they can fight around your insane AoE. Unlike the instalock 1st pick Abaddon, you want to pick Phoenix 3rd or 4th so that the enemy doesn't go Troll and Legion.

3.) A teammate would pick an Offlane hero first, so I would pick a Safelane Support and either match my team composition or counter an enemy pick. Usually Venomancer was a nice way to grind through the last couple dozen mmr to 4K.

This style of picking ended up getting me to about 4.5K mmr where I'm currently trying to find a new niche to boost myself up. (Abaddon ranked games included.)

I would say many times (low level, at least) agility is more important for the attack speed boost.
Also many heroes have skills that scale based off of their stats.
In general, your hero will have a main stat. You want to max that as much as possible.

Every hero in the game has 1 of 3 "primary" stats: agi, str, and int. For every point a hero has in that primary stat, they gain +1 damage to autoattack.

Separate to this, for every 1 str a hero gains 18(?) hp, and minor hp regen.
For every 1 agility, you gain +1 attack speed (cumulative, not additive) and for every 7 agility you gain +1 armor (which is 5% damage reduction cumulative, not additive)
For every +1 int, you now gain some mana, and spells deal slightly more damage (SLIGHTLY), and you gain slight mana regen.

Because agi heroes get +attack speed and + damage from the same stat, they typically are the right click end game carries of the game. But since they don't really want str or int, they are squishy and have limited mana pools.

Slark is typical for noobs because he has 3 (three) escape abilities and typically builds shadow blade, a good escape item.
Axe takes a little practice to get the combo down, but then he's super fun and stomps scrubs. And you'll rarely die as him.
I got started with Drow and Sniper, but I was accidentally good at positioning from rts games. Sniper has two passives, meaning not many button presses, you just need to be careful where you stand yourself with him.
Honestly, after playing maybe 20-50 games you should just start hitting the random button every once in a while, or queueing for random draft. A bunch of random draft is how I learned the heroes.

you'll have to learn supporting eventually, if only so you can effectively bully your own supports, I recommend pic related. If not him then Warlock. Both have decent survivability for supports, good abilities and jakiro will get enough farm for you to practice using support items.
Buy mekansm, even though it's not in the meta right now. I don't know exactly what the League item situation is, but I know you guys don't have a lot of actives. Practice activating mech at the right times to help your team: it heals and gives bonus armor, making people harder to take down with right clicks. Use it right as the enemy jumps on your team, or to save one of your teammates. Also try getting other active items like urn of shadows, glimmer cape or ghost scepter. Supports are the easiest role to get used to items with since their items will probably have the least impact in your games.

Guys wtf is wrong with match making? I decided to get back into dota a few months ago and I've been in low 2kmmr hell the whole time and I even had a shit week last week where I did nothing but lose. I've gained 350mmr since Friday and most of these games are stomps and even the ones where someone gets butt hurt because he last picked specter and ends up jungling for 40 minutes while we 4v5 my teams end up surviving long enough for the troll to leave the jungle and help one team fight for us to throne.

If your MMR is lower than 4k and you care about climbing, never play support. Ever. Spam well-rounded cores that can 1v9 effectively like Arc. Learn to farm well and you will out-carry literally any team.

The sole reason you should ever support is if you don't mind possibly losing later in the game and feel like memeing around for the first 10 minutes instead of farming.

I posted this in the last thread.
Supporting is actually vital for lower mmrs especially in the 'team of 4 cores' case. This is where you supporting can make the difference. Ensuring your carry gets his farm in lane and denying the enemy core's farm gives you a win condition. After that it's all about coordinating your team for fights and pushes.
What I recommend is you pick support last and counter pick depending on the enemy's line up.
If you play support well your team is almost guaranteed a win.

depends on whether warlock is played as a core or support.

mid warlock can peak earlier and get more farm to make his golemns deadliar and more effective. lvl 2 golemn 15 mins in is a teamfight winner and warlock with 4 golemns is a game winner.

support warlock has a long cd aoe stun and that's it. the timing is slower and by the time you get and if you actually get to level 3 golemn most carries can 1v1 them easily.
