It's not that it's impossible to distribute, it's that less people will read it.
People need an easy search bar and an easy result. Something like XDDC would doubtlessly shave off thousands of readers due to simple inconvenience. Survival of the fittest, sure, but the whole point of translation is to have people read the game, so I'd like to maximize the number of readers in any way possible, which can mainly be accomplished by waiting for a nyaa clone.

Here's a simple question: how do most people get into VNs or anime as a hobby? Most download one that looks interesting, and it snowballs from there. Most people will not look at a description on a box and pay $30 to take a chance. They try before they buy.

Here's what they are thinking: with piracy dead, now their sales will increase! Everything will get better! But here is the problem: sales may increase in the short-term, but over time, they will dwindle. Their old customers will eventually move on, and they will not get any new customers because the barrier of entry will be too high. Word of mouth will be nonexistent. A recent example would be Muv-Luv. If no one could pirate the original game beforehand, no one would talk about it, and it would have disappeared into obscurity. But it fucking didn't. Rance, which is one their very own site, would not be a big deal if not for Sengoku, which everyone had to pirate. No one would care.

And if any of these people "celebrating" have never downloaded an anime or VN, I commend them. Good for them. Very unlikely though, making them a hypocrite. How else would they be a fan of the genre in the first place?

Whatever. The sun always rises in the east, and there will be something new shortly. This sunset is still very sad though.
