Nope. Just because it's open source doesn't mean it's "fix it yourself". If there's an issue you can report the problem to get fixed. The engine is 100% usable without any C++ knowledge.

godot will remain nothing but a meme until there are actually good games out of it - unity has them, ue has them, even gamemaker has them, godot has shovelware from its parent developers at best

true, but that's really due to certain strengths (pixels are the units of the coordinate system, etc.) and despite various flaws/inconsistencies/hacky implementations. Maybe they fixed some of that in GMS 2, I dunno

>>175609004
The problem is deeper than that. Every comma does a pause in the text, if you'd read the correct sentence (with 2 commas) you'd pause only (or at least longer) before the first one. The code can't handle same symbols with different pause durations atm and would pause the same amount on both, resulting in the equivalent of "that I ... to this day ... still fear".
>>
>>175609541
just add two commas,, nobody will notice
>>
>>175609541
Ohhhh, you're doing this with text to speech? Neat.

>>175608186
I hope you're baiting.

Godot is open source, gamemaker is not.
Godot runs NATIVELY on linux, gamemaker doesn't, at all.
See a problem in gamemaker? Go tell daddy yoyo to fix it and hope that at least 500 people saw the problem AND that yoyo gives a fuck about it.
Wanna do 3D? good luck son.

Fuck off now please
>>
>>175609692
Fine, I'll do it properly and add code to support per symbol durations. Double comma hurts to even think about on a resolution of that size.

>>175609708
The pauses are time before the next character is printed, no more. Sorry to disappoint.
>>
>>175610092
>on linux
If you're trying to make a game on Linx you're doing something very, very wrong.
>>
>>175610584
Not true in the slightest. You can always export to other platforms.
>>
>>175610584
why?
>>
>>175608186
GMS is proprietary software. It's not good.

Godot is open source, so if a bug comes up, or you want to implement something on an engine-level, you can do it yourself, or download improvements others have made.

GMS you also have to pay Yoyo if you make any money. Godot is under a MIT license so you're free to do whatever you want for it.

Godot will most likely kill GMS once it garners enough tutorials online. Godot's 3D is also pretty good, and it'll start to rival unity, especially since Unity's built in physics and shit are so terrible.

About 25% of my itch downloads were for the Linux version (0% for OSX).
Sure Windows has a much bigger audience but if your engine allows Linux export then there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't use it.
Linux users are also much more likely to donate and such since it's so rare to find good Linux games, it's stupid how often devs forget to do builds for other systems even though their engines easily allow it.

I think that it rolls nicer without the pause, or with a pause after the second comma.

>>
>>175611934
Not that anon, but I don't even test other OSes, I just export the games to each OS and test the Windows build.
I've never run into any OS specific bugs that would require me to use another OS. I don't even think that would be possible without it being a bug in the engine itself.

Ok, so let's break it down:

A OSX machine is fucking expensive. I don't know where you guys live but here I would rather buy a motorcycle with that amount of money. Unless you try a hackintosh, but probably isn't a good idea.
For that to work, you will need to partition your machine. It's always kind of annoying when Linux install fucking Grub.
Also, every OS takes at least 30GB of space nowadays. If you have 1TB of more, good for you. If you are using a SSD card like me, not a good idea.

>>175612053
You will need a powerful machine for that. Even a simple 3D game will require some GPU memory and if the one you have is not that good, both your OS and the one in the virtual machine will be slow as fuck.
But if you game is that simple, why not go for WebGL?

>>175612304
Probably what a lot of people do but not that wise.
I know Unity, Unreal & family does the heavy lifting but something unexpected can happen you have no way to fix it.
>>

>>
>>175614097
J- just you wait

This month's game will be super duper amazing and blow you all away
>>
>>175612838
On this note, how many frames (or sprites, whatever) did the average Genesis game have?
>>
>>175614049
I can understand not supporting OSX since it's so expensive and its userbase is full of normies that don't even play games but Linux is free, it's easy as fuck to install and it has a considerable amount of users.
If you seriously can't bother buying a $5 USB drive and installing one of the retard-friendly Linux versions in it just for playtesting then why the fuck are you trying to make a game which is far more complex than installing an OS?
>>
>>175614668
>Why don't you learn an entire new OS for an insignificant market share?
I wonder.
>>
>>175614838
>click install
>open game
>you now learned everything you need to know
It's really not that hard to install Linux and I'm a Windows babby that doesn't give a fuck about it, I just want more people playing my game (which I got thanks to the minimal effort I had to go through).
>>
>>175614668
You reminded me that I actually tried that once but for everyday use, not play testing. It's really a good idea, even though it's useless to install the GPU driver because it rarely works.
>>
>>175615109
>encounter OS specific bug

>>
>>175615272

Are you really this incompetent?
What kind of shit engine are you using anyway?
>>
>>175614565
>the average Genesis game
Can't answer about the average game, but I can tell you what's there:

You have two tile layers for backgrounds (4 if you count the priority flags) and sprites with a maximum size of 32x32. Bigger sprites can be made using composite sprites (keep in mind the MD has a resolution of 320x240).

The Mega Drive supports up to 80 sprites overall and 20 sprites per horizontal line, which, frankly, is not a lot. Kinda cool what kinda stuff they made with it. There are some more palette/color tricks you can abuse, but that would go too much into detail here.
>>
>>175615465
>the problem will definitely be googleable
Pfft.
>>
>>175615642
It's ok, you can switch to some engine that doesn't make you pay to unlock Linux builds for your next game and you won't need to do mental gymnastics anymore.

Continued work goes into my FTL inspired game. Instead of space, it'll be medieval themed. Swords and magic. You'll use food and rations to go from point to point on the map, encountering events. Some of them will be combat, which will be turn based. Currently working on that. The characters and effects are placeholders atm.

Has anyone used nez with monogame https://github.com/prime31/Nez/ ? It has stuff like UI/ECS/collision/tilemaps implemented for you. I was thinking of using it instead of Unity for my 2D game.

A significant amount of the successful 2D games on Steam are made in Unity

There are successful games made in flash too but that doesn't make it a good engine, there are strictly better alternatives.

>>175616496
technically if they don't release a linux version, then linux users aren't their customers anyway

but companies don't eschew linux to avoid "ripping off" their customers with buggy games, they do it because they think the cost of supporting linux outweighs the benefits, which they probably do if they're doing all kinds of custom shit. If you're using Unity/UE4/whatever and you aren't making huge modifications to the engine itself? Chances are the engine's QA teams already ironed out most platform-specific bugs you could encounter, and as a small/indie developer getting those linux users playing your game poses a lot more benefit to you than it would to a AAA dev. Marketing is a good example, more people playing means more chance for marketing by word-of-mouth, and on top of that there are ideological Linux users who will spread the word about your game (if it's good enough) just because you chose to support their OS of choice.

>>175616676
nobody worth caring about actually gives a shit what engine you use, other than out of curiosity or maybe if they want to know how you did some specific thing in your game. the engine wars here on /agdg/ are just pointless posturing
>>
I've never done games beyond text adventures with Python. I'm kind of interested in trying to make a 3D roguelike/Souls-like just for myself. Is Unity the default go-to engine? I've got a little bit of UE2 & 3 experience from a decade ago, would that translate at all to UE4? Shit all over me if this is a question you get every day.
>>
>>175621451

Yeah, a bit. The biggest annoyance to me is the inability to obtain a handle to any Lua object, particularly closures. If you want scripts to be able to register callbacks for engine events, you have to do some stupid trick like storing the callbacks in a global table and using the table key as the "handle" on the native side. Meanwhile, with Python you can just take the PyObject* and keep it wherever you want. (Not that Python is perfect, either.)

I decided to try this gamedev thing out, so I downloaded unity and did this in an evening.

I kinda want to build a sidescroller, modern day, rpg but I'm not 100% sure if it'd work well. Maybe I should take a more "papermarioesque" aproach?

Everytime I see a post of this game I get this nostalgia wave of this dungeon crawling game I played on my Nintendo DS ages ago. Think it was made by Id software.

what's your workflow for getting a visual reference guide? do you just put all your refs in a folder, do you open up photshop and make a collage, drop it all in word? what if i also want some annotations on each image?

It doesn't make sense. People just love to oppress new things. That's why learning from a book will still always be seen as worth more than learning from youtube, even though the youtube vid basically could just be a vid showing every site of the book.

Oppression is the nature of most human beings
>>
>>175641659
>a vid showing every site of the book

i mean this is just inferior to the book in terms of actually reading it, though? it autoscrolls and you have to pause and unpause it all the time
>>
>>175641781
No, it isn't. You can copy text from a youtube vid much better, than from a book. It is much better as a reference, since you can just have it open in another tab, while the book most likely will close by itself, and you have to put it in your lap or wherever.
>>
>>175641960
>what are e-books
>>
>>175641960
>you can copy text from a youtube vid much better
oh are we talking about physical books? yeah yt is probably better for learning from. i actually LIKE the fact that a book is physical, since it doesnt take up any of my precious screen space. it's also good to not use a screen for 100% of your tasks, give your eyes a break.

online text is the superior option, you can literally copy and paste text. whatever works for you is fine though!

Well my basic combat engine code is functional at 131, now I just need to add about 50 characters, 100+ cards and their functions...Reasonable AI...the ability to have and target multiple player characters/enemies....

making a game is going to take forever man.

I should probably learn how to actually program at some point, still don't exactly know how to implement Tables in lua, always just used bare variables, Tables seem to just add an extra step to accessing my variables
>>
>>175642230
>>175642246
Whatever then. What you are arguing about here is really nonsense then. I thought you were trying to argue that books would teach more, but if it is just about conveniently reading the stuff, then yea, books are better. Doesn't really matter much though.

And with youtube, you also have the whole net on your fingertips. You can search for everything you want in a matter of seconds, while books are mostly not that good for learning specific things.
>>
>>175642424

Bullshit. Many stuff about coding you can find on the net is complicated as hell.
If you want to create your own engine or whatever, then perhaps you need to read books, but for game developement, the net is mostly more than enough.

Music is for a greenlight trailer.
Project's Monomyth, a first person dungeon crawler with free movement and metroidvania-styled progression.

If I'm interested I'll contact you by friday the 5th.

Finally figured out how to do alt fire.
There's now toggleable barrel that lets you shoot missiles (and maybe other stuff too). All alt fire weapons uses same, universal resource that's on right side of hud.

Also since dodge is it's own button, I added dodge roll to pilot.

Next I need to implement swimming for pilot, redo the weapon system, figure out how I'm going to do doors and do more documentations.

I'm also thinking of removing numbers from the HUD arrow things and putting them on top, in static position instead of moving. This would save some space on hud.

Do you prefer seeing boss health bar or not? Currently my bosses change color once they go below 50% hp, but there's no hp bar.

I did a really quick/sloppy animation of a boomerang with a kind of slanted view a long time ago, so that's probably it.

I have to manually place them, but I can copy paste sections off of my tile picker and off the map as well, so it goes by pretty quickly.

>>175651953
I think the boomerang just running out of time or hits and just falling to the floor is an interesting mechanic.
I want different weapons to have specific things that they're good at, and the boomerang shouldn't be something that you can just use from far away, bounce it off many enemies, and run away without consequence.

And I don't know how I could get an effect like pic related ie it bounces or "rolls" along this maximum distance until it reach the bottom of the circle

I tried using the tangent of the vector used for the entity speed but then it either get stuck because the new position is out of the circle or it bounces on the edge of the circle with too much force because the tangent have a too bigger speed and if I set the tangent to something smaller like its normalized version then it also get stuck

I mean it's a good game and all but I think the progression is all out of whack, you get the gamebreaking "choose your own items" artifact pretty early on and it gets boring before you even unlock most characters.

As far as I can tell, the people who like it the most are into co-op.

You can play games with dogshit balance / gameplay, and co-op will likely still be fun.

My completely uninformed guess is that it got popular at just the right time (early greenlight) and scooped up a fuck ton of co-op players. Follow that up with a nice feedback loop of people introducing the game to other people (for more co-op opportunities).

Aim for a finished game and stick to it even if you aren't "enjoying" developing it.

You have 20 seconds to give a GOOD reason to use Unity for a 2D game

I was wondering why there are so many people getting suckered into it lately but then I saw Unity 5.6 touts "improved 2D features", while still being dogshit in general.

So the reason is marketing and nothing else, YoYo dropped the ball with GM2 and not enough people know about better choices so they naturally gravitate towards the most popular alternative.

What's the advantage of having components containing only data vs data AND logic? I always hear people say Unity doesn't have a real ECS because there aren't any systems. What's the difference between having a Health component with a single integer and a HealthSystem managing every Health's stored integer vs a Health component that has a single integer and manages it itself?

I don't usually press the paradigm for global Systems so take this as an opinion.
It depends on the context you want and expect to use a Health in, and what Health needs access to in its context.
I would imagine Health especially to be a good example of a Component based system.
To modify a Health, you are always going to have a reference to its owner Thing. A health needs to have several checks when modifying its value to prevent it exceeding a range. It may need to change a UI element, or report to some other component.
I'd push that Score keeping would be a good System element.
This doesn't mean that the ideas are mutually exclusive though. Having an object in-world with a component like ScoreManager is a moderately healthy way to implement a System in Unity and keep many of the Component benefits. You can have an Instance of the score board. You can load a previous scoreboard, you can persist a scoreboard across maps. I work a lot with immutables and collections and stuff so I end up using paradigms like this a lot.
If you're using some library though, stick to the convention it presents you. It's likely designed for that convention and if you try hammering in a nail with the puller on a hammer you're playing hammerschlagen or having a bad time.

At my job I use math to do pretty much anything involving Robutts.
Most modern motor controllers give you an encoder, a forward bit, a backwards bit, and tons of diagnostics and safety shit.
Which is fine when you imagine Robots as how it's made machines that run lines but most of my job is robots for smaller companies that want to be able to load an excel sheet and have a microprocessor running asm calculate a curved surface to cut with a certain area below.
But unless you're doing recursive algorithms for systems and stuff I'd say just focus on excelling at trig for programming in most cases.

Just my two cents. There's a billion ways to implement everything, and many languages shy away from multiple inheritance for pretty good reasons.
Generally a good idea to follow conventions of whatever language you use, even if it is

I probably didn't write it clearly enough but the Tree will own a sprite in the form of an image field. I want the Tree and other objects to have access to a common SpriteHandler that can supply the functions for loading and setting up animations

>>175670418
To follow, I find that I usually try to make sure that a class is just a data definition, and I use inheritance for more and more advanced forms of the same data that need to operate in different ways, while if I'm expecting a common operation from multiple kinds of implementations I'll have them share an interface for it.
In my renderer, I use a generic IRender interface that my window can draw.
This allows me to make sprite classes that implement IRender and have sprite data and do sprite things.

My props, however, don't need to do sprite things. They don't need to be able to be returned by a sprite loader. I don't need to be able to pass them to sprite caches or anything so the Props simply maintain a reference to a sprite, and implement IRender themselves. Implementing it to move the render context's translation a little, and calling their sprite's render.
>>175670661
Mhm. I guess I'm not following your structure here. This is probably just because I'm a big dummy dumb dumb but I'll also mention that I find something is getting complex, it's usually because I'm trying to implement a weird the wrong abstraction / tool for the job.

Was planning to draw my sprites and objects in Flash and backgrounds in either CSP or Photoshop for the painted look, as in the attached image.

Now considering if drawing backgrounds in flash could be considered, I know usually flash art looks terrible, but I'm sure with enough effort I could make it look descent.

GMS2 made all those d3d functions obsolete. If I ported my current game over it would absolutely break. They have new 3d functions but I'm a retard who can't understand them.

Flash is all vectors so getting the painted look is almost impossible and getting the backgrounds to look decent would probably take longer than just painting them.

But using Flash for everything would keep the characters, props and backgrounds looking more stylistically identical so there's pros and cons for both.

Sounds to me like you should do a prototype and see how it looks before you commit

I haven't played Cave Story because I'm poor and formerly a NEET
>>
Hey AGDG, been away for about half a year due to want of cute gf overtaking my life. Better now.

What's changed?
>>
>>175673554
The original version is freeware, anon.
There are even free English patches.
>>
>>175673554
I don't understand how being poor or having more free time than most people would prevent you from playing a free game, but okay, whatever.
>tfw agdg is so underage that it thinks Cave Story exists only as a paid product.
>>
>>175673554
>so poor he can't play a free game

Were you here for agdg2?

Blake literally had people registering on his own php scripts on his own private machine. Agdg has many gullible retards.

I'm tracking the number of mentions of the following keywords in since the last 20 threads:
Unity
GMS + Gamemaker
Godot

I'm gonna graph them and post them every few threads, including the next one when this dies. Tell me more keywords to track and I'll do them if they're reasonable, not too much memey shit please. a little bit is fine though.

nice iwbtg game, the blast radius for those mines is really small they don't seem to be a threat at all, did you implement timed laser and falling spikes yet?

The setting is a interplanetary mobile capital city of the human federation, which is currently in *construction* inside a *space* *boat* which docked in neptune just in time for the celebration of universal *halloween* (It's also *winter* time in neptune, the most *comfy* season which lasts roughly 40 years). You play as a genetically engineered *micro/small* *police* *dinosaur* who pilots a giant *mecha* in the shape of the city's most popular idol *loli* *waifu* and fights a *lewd* *gelatinous cube* *monster* which attacked the city during *rush hour* with the intention of dragging the boatcity to the *underwater* depths of neptune it (the cube) came from.

The gameplay consists of fighting the cube while adapting to a arena that changes according to how much of it has sunk into the ocean and also avoiding having to arrest yourself due to public indecency due to the cube's lewd attacks. You can unlock diffferent halloween outfits for the mecha loli idol waifu by beating the game under certain conditions.
