>>
>>175572224
No, it's War For The Overworld.

It has some very nice ideas (like the beasts having their own portals, or the tavern to recover the money you paid your troops, or torturing enemies to death to recover their souls and infuse it in one of your creatures to make it extremely powerful), but it suffers from being not generic enough. So instead of having an army of giant spiders and spiders, you have Shadows, Bafus (blind, floating creatures), Oculus (slim beholders) and some insectoid thingy.

War For The Overworld. A spiritual sequel to Dungeon Keeper.

War For the Overworld is literally DK3. Also they had the Casino where your creatures spent their earnings in DK2. You could either let them win to make them happy or rig the casino to give you money.

But the casino made your creatures unhappy, while the tavern is mandatory, and make them happy to spend their money.

Not to mention you can feed them their own friends, and it's fucking hilarious.

>>175573159
Honestly, I can't say if it's good, but I like it. My complain is that it's a bit too slow, and it's all about doomstacks. Once your doomstack is dead, you're basically fucked up, the enemy can make a beeline to your core and kill you.
Gameplaywise, it plays like Dungeon Keeper 2 with a few more things, but the core gameplay is the same : make slaves out of mana, dig gold, make rooms, recruit monsters, send them to train, put them in the arena, etc...
The differences is that you get rituals to replace the offering to the gods, you choose what to unlock in the library, the maps are smaller, and you can have monsters that automatically drag beasts to the arena.

And the top monster is the vampire rather than Horny, but he's a pain in the ass to feed.

How to fix your settings for a nice first-game, but still retaining challenge:

Keep size and galaxy type the same
Put in max AI empires, this way you will naturally avoid run-away blobs because the AI's will be competing against each other
Put in 2 advanced AI starts at least to have another threat apart from the 2 FE's
Keep FE's at 2
Keep Hab at x1
AI Agressiveness on NORMAL
Diff is ok
Allowed FTL on Any is ok but any sorry-ass Hyperlane memers will probably get decimated early on
Empire placement in CLUSTERS
Advanced Neighbors on OFF is ok for first time
Endgame crises on is good
Ironman off is also good for first time
>>
>>175577538
Put in 20 AI's brah, or you will get blob-city in your galaxy, Also put Agressiveness back to normal and Cluster starts you wuss. Or you'll get the scenario where some douche spawns all by himself and gets to take a lot of systems unopposed and then he'll be a bitch to fight later on.

So why didn't /civ4xg/ like battleships again? Aren't they cost effective? Are they generally shitty? I'm thinking of building a couple of these. Is it a mistake?
>>
>>175578396
Read the ship design pastebin
>>
>>175578396
Aren't cost effective, too slow to produce, too much maintenance, too big so easy to hit with L slots and extremely vulnerable to X slot weaponry.

By comparison, cruisers can be churned out far faster, are more cost effective and aren't as vulnerable to massed L slot weaponry and X slot sniping struggles to hit them reliably meaning more wasted shots.
>>
>>175578396
The only thing battleships are good at is PD screening and taking out other battleships
>>
>>175578396
>carrier core
Yep it's a mistake. The problem with battleships is they're only good against cruisers and other battleships, and are expensive and take ages to produce. Compared to cruisers that can be build in much shorter time and can be effective against every ship class because M slots are overpowered there's never a reason to bring battleships where a better solution wouldn't be to just build more cruisers.

Also! New report on my second playthrough of the Ichorian farmer-bugs. Apparently, I have just completed the Horizon Signal event and, in the process, ascended my race to that of the Messengers. Now, this presents a potential cleave in my original plans to become a race of immortal machines, so I have to ask...

> Getting knocked out for a fucking wisdom tooth
Wow what a weak ass pussy. it's one or two needles and you don't feel nothing.
>>
>>175589838

Okay, here's exactly how they're going to do this thing.

You're going to walk into the room, they'll check you in and call you back. They will ask you to wait in another room while they get the dentist. When they arrive, they will take you to another room where the equipment is set up. If you get it like I did, you are going to sit in a chair, lean back, and they will put a mask over your mouth with a gas that produces the same sort of feeling as if you are extremely, absurdly drunk (with none of the nausea) while they get a needle in your arm.

And then you wake up in recovery, the sensation of falling asleep from the gas being quite similar to your eyes slamming shut for maybe five seconds.
>>
>>175591238
Unless you have an immunity or resistance to anesthesia.
Tends to happen in some people or those with serious infections that grew accustomed to the pain. Happened with me and two rotten cracked teeth last year. 4 attempts using the traditional needle method. 4-6 needles each time. They couldn't believe it. Had to get sedated so I wasn't aware.
Thing is I remember everything that happened and even conversations when you are supposed to forget that sort of shit with sedation.
They just assume I have a strong resistance to traditional anesthetics.

Battleships have a number of problems.
First off, they will move forward until their longest-ranged weapon is in range, and then they stop dead. This makes equipping them with anything other than all-large-slot Kinetic Artillery and maybe an x-slot a waste of resources, as anything else won't ever shoot.
The not - moving thing is also a problem because it means your battleships -the tankiest, most durable ships in your fleet- only ever take damage from other battleships. If the enemy fleet is attacking your battleships, it means everything else is dead and the battle is already lost.
That all-large-slots thing also bites them in the ass because of evasion- their inability to hit smaller ships means their fire is only effective if aimed at cruisers or other battleships, and they still struggle against End-Game cruisers. As a result, battleships are only really good against big, slow targets- ie other battleships.
They WOULD be a good response to Fallen Empires, which have a lot of big, high-health targets- except FEs get Titans, which have a weapon that can and will one-shot a battleship. Because this death ray has greater range than anything you can get, you're guaranteed to lose a battleship right at the start before it can fire back, and will likely lose at least six more over the course of the battle. Fleets with those resources put into cruisers have both a better chance of dodging, and replacing eight cruisers is still easier than replacing six battleships.

Long story short, right now the only thing battleships are cost-effective against are other battleships, and thus by not building them you put the enemy fleet at a disadvantage. Fixing this would require either making battleships deadlier against cruisers, making medium-slot weaponry less effective, changing battleship behavior to make more aggressive builds viable, rebalancing the X-weapons, or some combination thereof.

Starting a new game...
I've played quite a few 4x games, a bunch of grand strategy, only played stellaris once before though.

4 FEs, 10 adv, 20 ai, huge size, wormhole.

Playing as a science directorate, full xenophobic, materialist etc.

OK I have a weird question that googling isn't quite answering so here goes:
In Stellaris , it's possible to be the only FTL at start.
But there's still primitives that spawn
If I lock in my custom made species, will they spawn as primitives?
Pic unrelated but included for fondness.

because it would be impossible to maintain stability closer to the sun. the gravity at that distance would collapse the structural integrity of basically anything. there are so many problems with an actual sphere of any star-encompassing size that it's essentially impossible without deconstructing multiple solar systems worth of raw material and bringing them on site.

if you're going dyson anything, it'd be an enormous swarm of statites around the sun around mercury's orbit using solar sails to remain positioned.

But it's true.
Think of any other RTS. They all have some form of terrain. Mountains, forests, coastlines etc. Would that game be better if all that terrain was removed and you just played blob vs blob?
That's what hyperlanes are. They're the closest analogue to terrain. Hyperlanes create chokepoints and sectors, as if there was a mountain or river there. That's good. They add another desperately needed layer of depth to this already lacking game. You can use hyperlanes to strategically fortify a chokepoint. You can prioritize expanding in a certain direction to prevent being boxed in.
The alternative to that is just blob vs blob like some shitty agar.io knockoff and you can skip directly to the enemy capital from outside their border. As if this game wasn't easy enough

Is it just me, or is Discovery a weak-ass tradition?

I can't see myself picking anything other than Expansion for early game no matter what kind of empire I play, and most of Discovery's bonuses are geared irrationally towards early-game stuff.

By the time I go far enough in Discovery, there aren't enough planets to make Planetary Survey Corps pay for itself. Anomaly failure/discovery chance just feels like trying to plan around an RNG event that's too rare to begin with. The only thing I seriously want out of that entire tree is 10% faster research and that's way too expensive compared to other trees.

Does anyone agree, or am I missing something here?

Ok so my first game of Stellaris here, some things I still don't get:

I formed a federation, but now, every time I try to declare war on someone or do something rash they all vote in opposition, is there any way to influence the the members to vote with me?

I conquered an ancient awoken empire, but I did not get their tech level, I guess this is normal to not unbalance the game but still... what the hell?

Also a window already appeared saying I won the game by conquest because I hold more than 40% of the habitable planets, I guess the only reason to continue would be to paint everything my color.

Now regarding habitable planets, what is the bullshit in my image?

Thank you in advance for your insight anons.

Also, Is it worth for me to get Utopia as I'm getting started with the game or should I wait for a steam sale?
>>
I'm currently designing a 4x / space empires style game and I need some design help.

As of right now I can't post any work in progress stuff, or graphics or scripts, because it would violate my NDA, but I can ask a very vague question.

Basically, how would you personally like a city building and happiness mechanic with a bit more depth then the traditional games implemented into a star system-base for your growing empire?

No idea on federations because I never let the AI decide shit for me.

You can get some of their tech as options from researching debris, but their unique things are meant to be unobtainable because even the FEs have lost their secrets.

The victory popup is somewhat irrelevant, play until you're not having fun then quit.

That bullshit is there so that only specific barren planets can be terraformed because otherwise your ability to reach victory conditions can get a bit out of control, not to mention the slowdown from ships that comes when every system has multiple habitables.
>>
>>175649580

>slowdown from ships that comes when every system has multiple habitables

what?
>>
Any ways to make planets not habitable aside from Pretoryn swarm and the End of the Cycle?
>>
>>175649693
The main reason the game slows down is people building ships.

When every system has potentially habitable planets out the ass, the AI ends up with massive fleets because of all the resources and naval cap they get.
>>
>>175649819
Oh, I see, i thought the ships would travel slower the more planets they where, so I was confused.
>>
>>175649774
Not to my knowledge.
Well, unless you count the random event where you can find an ancient alien terraformer on your planet and you can activate it, causing it to either make your planet better or worse.

So far all i have managed to do with it is turn a perfectly good planet into Venus 2.0.

>2000 star game spawns me sandwiched between 8 other empires in the middle arm of a 4 spiral galaxy.
I have never spammed so many frontier outposts to make sure I have rim and core access. My empire is a misshapen, lumpy lattice full of unclaimed space and with a huge dick penetrating the galactic core, but it's secured for now.

Too bad one of those faggots cut off my two core frontiers from the rest of my empire, though. That thing is never going to look natural now. Even with another frontier outpost it's forever a dick.

On the good side I have so many planets I don't know what to do with them. How do you guys expand when you have over a dozen 20+ tile planets and enough minerals to plop down colonies at a decent pace? This is still early enough that the research and tradition malus are a big deal. I haven't been able to get tier two weapons to pop up for fuck's sake. Already sitting at like 7 planets, with the AI all generally having 5-8.

Your question makes no fucking sense. Adding a picture that doesn't convey anything meaningful still makes no sense.

>Basically, how would you personally like a city building and happiness mechanic with a bit more depth then the traditional games implemented into a star system-base for your growing empire?
Is the question just "is more depth good"? You can go full Dwarf Fortress on depth before it becomes a bad thing. But you still have to build it and design it and balance it, so it's probably not worth making it more than a two or three factor thing.

Real life info - if you kill an animal in great pain or distress meat is ruined by massive hormonal boost and it becomes grayish and mushy. Its generally frowned upon to eat such low quality product.

If they weren't cunts and you just turned them into livestock because reasons then go ahead.

The thing is doing so would mean it's impossible to keep up with tech unless you're constantly expanding. Having to balance tech against expansion is one of the few things stopping the player from completely steamrollering the ai (not that you don't anyway).
>>
>>175671140
This is important. Land grab while you can grab land. Spend alllll that purple mana. When the borders start getting tight you'll have plenty of planets inside your borders to fill up.
>>
>>175671085
You don't need tech as long as you have ridiculous amounts of ships. Having good economy is far better than having high tech.

There's mods on workshop that remove research penalties completely, but I think those go too far. You can tune the modifiers yourself pretty easily, I've just removed the planet count penalty on research.

There's a defines.txt somewhere in the Stellaris folder that contains all modifiers, if you search for TECH_ in the file you should find the relevant lines easily.

Usually nothing for the first ~50 years, I frontier excellent (20+) planets of any type and make my way through the research tree via stations.

Though I'm pretty sure this isn't even close to optimal expansion.

Bigger ships are important but tech really isn't the end all. A single weapon tier is only around 15% boost. You can get the same from a strategic resource.

Defense tech scales up a lot more strongly but it's nothing more ships can't solve.

My main issue *is* the bloat. It feels like it added so many ship classes just for the sake of adding them. Not too fond of the designs either.

That aside I don't think that NSC is a bad mod, it just ain't my cup of tea.
>>

>>
>>175674089
That's fair. I feel the same way about some of the classes. Couldn't the NSC devs just add additional module slots to existing ship classes without overwriting anything? That would eliminate the need for the support/ecm ship types, and you could just create different blueprints as needed. What I really like are the bigger ship classes added like supercarrier/dread/flagship.

At least I can chalk it up to booze this time.

The only ship class mod that I really dislike is NSC for the previously mentioned reasons. Kinda tempted to give 5.0 a shot because the Leviathan thing sounds interesting enough for at least one run.
I've been using ISB for ages now and the main reason why I still haven't tried Realistic Ships is because I'm too used to the former and it'll probably feel bloated with the latter.
Ship Classes Extended feels interesting and I really gotta give it (and Realistic Ships) a shot, if anything just to get a good idea of what they're like. Seems pretty good though.
That Flagship class mod that gives you a ship class that uses the Dreadnought model isn't the most refined one (though it's getting there) but I'm pretty fond of it, mostly because I love the way the Dreadnought looks.
