i wonder how heavy were the original devola and popola. their weights aren't mentioned, but if they were as heavy as automata's, their android forms would be compromised within the time it took for it to get to nier.

people would ask questions quickly if they noticed those two frail girls (esp. the overly friendly devola) are heavier than some of the biggest dudes around.

so far the only android that weighs the regular human weight is accord.

And largely spamming dodge at the right time. The heal-when-doing-damage chip (Deadly Heal I think) is also very good.

But its mostly all about dodging. A lot.

You could argue that the Operators fed vital info + mission data to androids that allowed them to kill machines. They are still part of the military.

So, who is really 'innocent'? Aren't the machines the Aggressors for being made to invade Earth in the first place? :^)

Combos differ upon the weapons you use - try and mix them up. Some weapons mold well into others.

There is always a full light combo (left click-left click-left click on PC for example)

There is always a full heavy combo,

Charge combos, air combos,

And (for small sword/large sword) a nice combo is left-left-left-right-right (depending on how long the sword allows, look at its details and it will show the combo number as '4' or '7'.)

I love the bracers because of their speed and how long the combos are. Even on ground their great fun to fuck around with, especially with shockwave. Shockwave makes everything better.
And yeah that's how I felt about the Tower too. Thr plot reveals, the bosses, the music, the art direction, the Nier library nostalgia trip, the perspective switching, all of it was fantastic. Even without ending E the game gmhad already solidified itself as one of my all-time favorites based on the strength of that area alone. Of course, pretty much everything before that was excellent as well.

I couldn't disagree more. About the only thing the original did better were the main characters. Automata's are good, but they don't develop as much and aren't quite as memorable. The stories for both are about equal overall. They both try something different (Nier tells a simpler and more personal tale that excels in emotional moments, while Automata is a broader story chronicling warring factions and is more thought provoking) and they both do a great job pulling off what they are attempting. OSTs are also equal.
But pretty much every other area Automata beats out the original. Combat, customization, length, variety, pacing, bosses, level design, and art design are all an improvement. Automata is the better game hands-down.

And it is for this reason why the narrative and how it's presented falls flat in some places. Automata is just as much about it's main cast as Nier was, otherwise what purpose would Ending E have? The game handed the main cast a shitty deal, but if you don't care about the characters why go through with Ending E to "try" and deny that shitty deal? If you weren't suppose to connect with the main characters of Automata like you could in Nier, what reason would you have to go through Ending E? In Ending D of Nier, the sacrifice was more fulfilling because you actually cared about the character you were making the sacrifice for. Nier treated it's main cast a lot better. It made them likable people. Automata doesn't do this. Some sidequests made me outright hate the main cast after knowing everything about them. You admitted Automata has weaker characters, I'd say they were outright poor with the game giving you no real reason to invest in them. So the game's story fell flat for me. It had neat concepts, but didn't really capitalize on any of them. It kinda just threw them at you to think about while by in large still hamming up the relationship between 2B and 9S, and I wasn't invested so I didn't care. A2 was less of a real character and more of a YorHa stage play cameo since there is so little of her and about her in-game.

So I'll give Automata the pass on gameplay, but not on narrative. Nier is the better game for me when it comes to that.

Yeah, I don't agree at all. I said Automata has weaker characters, and it does. But not by much. I still cared about them plenty. And really Nier himself was one of the weakest characters in the original game. I wasn't happy about him sacrificing himself, but compared to 2B dying or especially the final A2/9S fight it wasn't nearly as gut-wrenching. It doesn't help that Nier literally erased himself from existence, meaning nobody was left to suffer from his death.

Outside of the slight difference in character quality, the stories are about equal. And considering we're taking about video games, characters are only one part of the whole. And Automata did so many other things better than the original game that I don't think there's any comparison.

Narrative and character development primarily. I didn't think the story was very compelling at all, it left me saying "That's it?" after every ending, especially ending A. 2B and A2 might as well not exist with how little personality they have. During the first ending where you're supposed to care about 2B having to kill 9S, where exactly is the buildup to that? It's not personal and emotional like the original. Don't you think Automata felt too vague and obtuse? It feels like they have this simplistic message about "what makes humans human" by having the setting be one of only artificial lifeforms but they forgot to include a story on top of that.

I'd have to ask what the story even is in Automata, not a lot really happens. Some machines and androids just kinda die and there's this AI that controls the network and it's all a simulation bro. I mean they probably could've done the same story with a much different presentation and it would've worked better but as it stands the way it's told is just so uninteresting and uninvolved.

As far as gameplay goes, obviously Automata is better despite being really unbalanced due to the leveling system but they aren't too far apart at giving you the same feeling if you know what I mean. NieR had better bosses, Automata was very samey and none of them had the same character depth, even Adam and Eve. Automata doesn't have deeper gameplay than most other action games either, it's the same simplistic combat from NieR with added moves which is fine and is even preferable if the story would've held up. Traversal is the real king here in Automata.

Also, nitpick but all of the returning characters were not handled well at all.

You people need to read. That is exactly why I said Automata gets a pass on gameplay. I enjoyed everything about the game ~except~ for it's main characters. And given how Taro writes with the INTENT to get people emotionally involved (watch his GDC talk), Automata fell flat. I didn't care about 2B. I didn't care about 9S. The reveals didn't help at all and you barely know anything about A2 if you forgo the YorHa stage play. The most you get is the blurb in Anemone's diary.

Well, that's weird, because to me it's quite the opposite. Nier's characters were fine, but I wasn't too invested in them, in fact, I felt that the endings and all the drama fell flat with them. By the time of Emil's sacrifice, I was bored to tears and I was like "Oh, more drama. Who would have thought. I'm starting to hate that fucking sad violin." I still can't bring myself to feel anything towards Papa murder-boner Nier and his sacrifice. But I do think some things
work better with Brother Nier.

With Automata, I was hooked from the start and I couldn't wait to see what would happen to these characters, because I could just feel that something big was about to go down. And I wasn't disappointed. It's admittedly more of a slow burn with Automata though, because most of the development with the characters hits when you realize what is the whole deal with them. That only really happens towards the end, but I guess it gives you the incentive for a second playthrough. And noticing all the little details and foreshadowing with that knowledge in mind is something else.

Automata to me feels like an improvement on pretty much everything.

The only things that moved me in Automata were the things that were NPC related and Pascal's ordeal with his village. None of the drama regarding 2B or 9S moved me. As I mentioned before, the side quests only made me care about NPCs more than the main cast. And the YorHa Betrayers side quest killed any sympathy I might have had for 2B and 9S.

What boss had personality in Automata? Certainly not the one you fight 5 times. Almost every boss in NieR had some emotional depth. Automata's bosses are about as deep as the pile of boxes you fight in the desert temple. None of them are as interesting as Roc, P-33/Kalil, H&G, Goose, Wendy, Kaine, Devola/Popola, and the big one, Gestalt Nier. Others are great because it develops the main characters like Emil's sister or the shade that killed Kaine's grandmother.

Those are all my nitpicks though, good job.

Devola/Popola and Kaine are the only remotely interesting ones in the original. Mechanically they're are all weak (and far more similar to each other than the Automata ones) and outside of the two I mentioned none have any emotional weight. Some bullshit forced drama shoehorned in immediately before does not make for an interesting boss. And Gestalt Nier is not the same as Replicant Nier. What we learn about him in-game is not enough to give a shit about him. In Grimoire Nier, sure. But not in the actual game, which is what we are discussing.

The Automata bosses are far more interesting mechanically and have just as much half-baked emotional punch as the ones in the original. The main exceptions, again, being Dev/Pop and Kaine in the original and A2/9S in Automata.

All that was seen in the opening of Route C was the Bunker getting destroyed, nothing else. The debris falling could've have easily come from just the bunker.
The debris field is massive just because it was in orbit.

About multiple satellites being assigned to YoRHa.
According to the world guide(my strategy guide doesn't arrive until later today so I may be wrong.) Only the Bunker out of 13 military satellite outposts is YoRHa exclusive. The Bunker had construction finished on September, 11938 and became operational in November, 11940.

I think what we should learn from all of those pre-game 9S kills is that 2B changed a lot herself.
And each "new" 9S was also influenced differently because of that. To the point we see in the game - they both literally can't live without each other and the only meaning in their live are to be with each other(9S was extatic just to meet her again even if he "reborns").

I am not saying that their relationship is twisted or sick and happened just because 2B felt grief because of multiple kills of the same person or smth. We know that 9's personality always draws towards to 2's. In the pre-YoRHa we saw the result of #2 not actually loving him back despite him being killed 6 times.

But as 2B and 9S are still different models then their prototypes, 2B realized along the way that for some reason she can't describe she got weird feeling towards 9S and killing him really hurts her(she didn't ever mention anyone else she killed btw and as she was deployed alone to take down A2 there could be more missions before).

Unlike super advanced 9S hitting on her right from the start every time, it took her more time to conclude wtf was going on with her("memories of pure light" that what it was). The main problem was the secretive nature of 9S never really saying to her that he felt the same. Or he didn't have time.

It really doesn't matter what happened at the exact moments of their history together(no full dates shown in stories for some reason btw). The feelings development is what is really important and we already got it with all those stories and ultimate conclusion in the game.

Honestly i don't think i even remember a video game love story as beautiful and heart-wrenching as relationships between 2B and 9S.
