locate your .vscape2 folder, which should be under your home directory (the folder with your name on it).
from there, access the spires folder and there you should see a background.png, mascot_chat.png, and mascot_inv.png file.
Rename your custom mascot as "mascot_chat.png" or "mascot_inv.png" depending on what it is, and replace the file within the same directory
reload and relaunch your client for it to take effectsomeone made a very detailed gif -- or was it a webm? -- of how to do it, wish i had saved it

I care a great deal about the community, which is why I feel so strongly about this. Sure, it might be a bit chaotic at first (just like the trial), but within less than a couple of hours people self-organized and communities actually became stronger.

Let us examine this more critically in the short and long term.
Short-term benefits from more thread activity not only include more newfriends, but those newfriends are key economical agents that will populate the game and increase the amount of resources available for trade.
They will grind, collect, kill, skill, and do whatever it is normally done by players to earn money. Meanwhile as the economy develops further, established players absolutely benefit from this from having more mats and newfriends to do their bidding -- and they will do it happily if it means getting shekels.
Some of the long term benefits?
These newfriends would not only be more free bug-testers for the devs, but maybe some of them might even know how to code and code us more content.
God knows pickles needs more dialog drones if it means going through more quests.
We might get donators as well to help sustain the server further. The benefits are endless.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite follow. This server as confirmed by the admin team principally remains to be a faithful 2007-era adaptation rather than boasting custom content left and right. Custom content is actually frowned upon, and was only in place as key necessary elements, rather than as selling points. Dreamscape is what is big on custom content.
Furthermore in regards to free speech, the thread already fulfills that role. People are still able to speak their minds here, as I myself am doing by expressing my objection to yell. In fact, were I to object in-game, the controversy by nature of not being anonymous might earn me a mute for laughs or at least heavy scrutiny. There's actually less free speech in-game and in yell, and this is a given.

It doesn't matter, it could be hilarious (which it is at times), or it couldn't be, what does matter is that we need more people and resources. To clarify, I'm not interested in creating a "safe space" either. Predictably I could just say "use the thread" and leave it at that, but more practically speaking, people can still PM each other or speak out loud in public places as far as invitation goes. These are all real alternatives towards the acquisition of a cc invite, and if at any time you're still unable to find one to your liking, you are always free to make your own cc yourself and invite others.
Not only that, but the absence of any cooldown in cc chat means there's greater incentive and use for cc discussion instead of yell. Speaking is encouraged in cc's because they're just not constrained, whereas functionally speaking, yell's cooldown just encourages shitposting as one-liners are easy to make. As I have said, it's not about me. Truth be told, I regularly and actively use yell myself -- why wouldn't I? I would place myself in a disadvantage by hiding it. Consider the amount of time, effort, and energy needed to produce such content versus the amount of time people would actually enjoy and utilize such an update. A lot of what has been listed or "missing" are naturally higher-level areas that just not everybody will be able to utilize immediately, meaning that not only would they take a long while to code, but only a select few can make the most if it. The base game in itself however, is largely playable and accessible.
Turning yell off is quite literally only a few keyboard strokes away, while simultaneously benefiting the playerbase, the economy, the quality of the server, the mods, all at that instant and indefinitely as a long-term prospect. Do you not see how such a simple solution such as this must not be abandoned?

Yes, I stand by that assertion. The elimination of yell would result in more thread activity, meaning more exposure, meaning the increased likelihood of players joining into the game.
These new players are then perfectly valid economical agents that would gather resources, trade, and slowly transition into long-term players as they progress further. Now while not every new player will reach this stage, at least maybe on the way they will contribute before quitting. The net gain is still there, and the economy benefits.
As far advertizement goes for the ease of trade in itself, the thread has always traditionally fulfilled that role and so nothing is changed. Economy benefits from shutting down yell, one of many, many benefits.
