How do I get better at this game?

I've read the IVAN pastebin and some of the wiki but I still cannot get past Level 2 - always hitting some insane difficulty spike like leprosy or acute poison or exploding dude.

grab a copper/bronze/iron/anything pickaxe from UC. They almost always spawn. Pray to loricatus until he turns it into damascus steel. Go down UC:2 and dig in the empty room with a block of rock in the middle. Discover stairs. Go down stairs. Mine crystals. Sell crystals to shopkeeper in capital. Keep one as infinite and lightweight and unbreakable lightsource.

I must be autistic as fuck because I cannot seem to get into any roguelike other than DCSS. I've tried a few times and I've failed, so I need to ask something from people who have hopefully played these two roguelikes I'm about to mention, along with DCSS.

How does ADOM and Caves of Qud compare? I mean seriously.

I'll straight up mention what I like most about DCSS.
First and foremost, I adore the branching path thing. Lair having 2 of either Shoals, Spider, Snake and Swamp showing up as well as optional places like Slime and Elf which you don't necessarily need to do but can help or ruin you.
I also like that the end of each branch can have a certain theme, like I think in Orc I've had a centaur themed ending? Also an Ogre one.
Shit like that.
Do Adom & CoQ do anything similar in that regard?

Do they have tons of unique enemies that may or may not spawn?

Please respond, I need another roguelike to play and those two are at the top of my radar, but since you've gotta pay for them unlike most other roguelikes I'm not sure if I'll enjoy them.

I honestly find all the oozes immersion-breaking and always kind of disheartening to face since there's often no real good method of approaching them - you can sometimes cut and run, but since they're wallcrawling/stealthy you often have to bash through them and they often just keep on coming. Just thinking about heaps of oozes keeps me from coming back, really.

I'm not sure if that's totally fair - without them your resources would be more abundant, and maybe it's necessary to have a wallcrawler/flanker enemy in the game, but having them be stealthy just makes it so very annoying. What are a bunch of sentient slimes doing in the cult-dungeon, anyway?

You should consider getting more Dex, probably by using your next few stat-ups at level 15 and 18 to boost it. EV should be a little bit over 9, just for safety's sake. Dodging and removing the shield penalty (by training Shields) should do it.

Tips and Tricks

If you develop a consistent movement pattern for exploration, corners and other common dungeon features it will make exclusion placing quicker and make travel feel more natural.
Use guaranteed trap-free tiles as much as possible. These include shops, stairs, altars, portal entrances, etc.
While it can be difficult to see the exact movements of fast enemies such as adders, you can usually infer the path they took if you think a little about it.
Don't try to move too quickly or play too sloppily or you will invariably move off the carpet and risk trapping yourself
Use . if you are throwing or using a ranged weapon so that the ammunition falls on a safe tile.
Don't move towards enemies at all over untested terrain - let them come to you and reveal any traps themselves.
Monsters that are chasing you won't care at all about your exclusions. If you're retreating to a stair or doorway, you will need to consider whether it's better to walk on unsafe tiles or let the monster(s) take free swings at you. Letting a yak hit you twice might be better than being shafted or teleported at 50% HP.
Once they are no longer threatening, monsters such as bats and unseen horrors make very good minesweepers. You can wait while they test the area around you.
Monsters with repositioning abilities are uniquely dangerous. Against elephants and the like, you should position in a way that means any tramples will be onto safe tiles.
If you end up in a dire situation where a shaft or teleport trap would be better than what you're presently facing, you should walk on untested tiles as this will increase the chance of escape.

Yes. Enemies only explode when you lunge stab them. Wutang is actually a really good god for stealth stabs. Both his abilities facilitate exploding the dudes with your chess boxing.
