Hey man, bandwidth can be a pain. I can't believe how fat my browser felt using ABP instead of uBlock origin, between the "cram thousands of CSS rules in every page" shit and actually loading shit before downloading and blocking it... fuck, I guess they are a bit more obscure but "for advanced users" or not, just turn on the defaults and you're better off than adblock+noscript.

I'm intrigued, would almost like to try it. It would also be a great base for modding off of. Definitely at least save a copy of it like that. Too many mods leave almost the entire vanilla game there, plus custom stuff.

>>175244880
>>175245814
If you don't know how, see http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Still

Also if you really want water it's probably better to build a well than to store water in a barrel.
>>
>>175244880

There is currently no way to get liquids into barrels. Its probably going to be a feature soon, since you can buy blood filled barrels and stuff from trade caravans.

The only way to store up water is to build a cistern. Which basically involves digging a pit inside the fort and putting a zone over it designated as a "pit/pond" zone. dfwiki should have an article on it

Also, if your dwarves are drinking any water at all, you are playing the game wrong. Don't let your booze stocks dip below 100

>>
>>175252274
Well it doesn't.

In the linked interview, he mainly critised how mainstream games in general, and mmos in particular, have these persistent infrastrucutures for tracking progress (i.e. achievement systems, developing mmo characters as a "persona" that can never die permanently, etc).

In DF, you always start from a blank slate, everytime you gen a new world. Nothing carries over from one world to the next. The soundsense fag implemented an achievement system IIRC, but thankfully, we'll never have one in the base game.
>>
>>175252274
He's not wrong. It's well known that mmos use methods to addict users to the grind and keep them playing the game.
>>
>>175252539
I know, i just found it funny how that line from wikipedia implied that DF players don't have compulsive hoarding traits. Even though the game is literally about hoarding as much value as you can.
>>
>>175248739
Dwarven spaceships would be planetoids with propulsion systems attached, so they could imagine that they were actually just inside the earth and didn't get space-sick.
>>
>>175252774
Now that you mention it, yeah, probably.

Those cockpits, completely surrounded by glass, would probably frighten a dorf beyond belief. They'd feel completely exposed to the emptiness of space, and there would be no cover for them if the spacecraft was lit up from the outside.

Ive been thinking about this pretty hard but i still cant decide between the two so im making a poll.
http://www.strawpoll.me/12842625
Ive started to work on both of them for the fun of it but i'll start focusing my attention on the winner so i'll have atleast one of them finished in a reasonable time.

>>175242370
Pretty much yes, i removed every fantasy aspect of the game other than the civilized races. Goblins still build towers but that can be changed easily. Stuff like cave bears still exists but its pretty empty.
I couldnt remove hardcoded stuff like vaults, FBs, demons etc but you can disable them in world generation i suppose.

I'll upload the file as soon as possible, right now i dont have access to the computer with the files.

Beginner here,
Is there a way to change the size/share of the 3 screens?
i am talking about the detailed view screen where you move the cursor and play, the gameplay screen where you see what you can do with the keyboard, and the overview screen on the right (broader and less detailed view of the area)
Like toggle on/off the overview screen because it is huge and i do not use it much yet

It's not as convenient a resource as the wiki but esc > key bindings is where you can see/change all those, they're mostly screen based (so r on one screen can mean "dig a ramp" while on another it can me "repeat this job" and so forth) except for the top couple of headings.

At some point you'll notice magma is actually infinite, and goes back up to 7/7 after draining some off the reservoir, and with patience, and careful planning, you'll flood the surface, and heat your fort's walls with magmaducts between rooms

>The main highlight this week is the post-mission report screen. When your dwarves come back, they give you a new sort of report that you can view at your leisure from the 'r'eport list. We based the report viewer more or less on the flight/sub sims we played a long time ago, where you get the exact path of your dwarves unfolding on the world map as time advances uniformly, and it gives you historical events as they come on the side, including who they are tangling with during site raids and what happened. The dwarves do seem to be engaged in some buggy jumps on to islands as short cuts, and we'll try to sort as much of that out as we can, but I'm sure this new level of visibility is going to be a cornucopia of bug-fun after the release. In any case, we're ready now to switch over to fort mode diplomacy for next month!

Shortly before the first 3D version. My first 2 or so forts were still 2D, then the new version was released. Despite numerous problems and gutted features, I think each release was a massive improvement.
I've gotten so used to the DF release cycle that I catch myself being surprised how "fast" some games release that have been in development for something like 10 years.

I usually go with a watchtower. It's 2-4z high and is only accessible from inside the fort, and it's placed so invaders have to walk past it to get to the fort's entrance (and hopefully, they'll wander around there for a while when(if) I get the drawbridges up in time).

Took me about two years to set up, but I walled off my main keep and made the only entrance to the outside cut off by 3 3x10 bridges, dropping down 5z onto sandstone with copper spikes. There's a tower/pillbox watching out from the outer side of the bridge that's only accessible from the fort, and under the bridge there's also firing holes for archers.

Oh and the upper river has a dropping bridge floor to flood the pit with, which then drains out into the lower river.
>>
>>175304286
I haven't had too much experience with the newer versions, are climbing invaders a problem with your setup? Or does the moat stop them from getting close enough to jump?
>>
>>175304581
The moat seems to stop them from trying, and if that isn't doing it, the layer of fortifications on the top does. I have to go through in winter and channel the moat out properly to stop ramps forming because my guests keep trying to take shortcuts through it and drowning themselves.

You should figure out where the level is getting low and put some baffles in to slow the flow. They can only path through the water if it's not deep (5/7 I think? is too deep). If your guests can move through your moat invaders can too.

dead thread
>>
>>175307712
traffic zones only work for dwarves and other "permanent" residents.

if you really want to make sure people don't drown themselves in a moat or other body of water, make certain that the locations of low-water level are completely covered. at least up to the point where the water level is no longer pathable (without swimming, which doesn't exist for fort mode yet)

there was an issue with water falls where the water level would drop low enough at the edge to where creatures would attempt to walk through the 2-3 water level and get swept over the edge. a partial solution from toady was to remove ramps near the edge, but it can still happen.

simply build a bridge directly over these low-water level areas, so they travel over the bridge instead of in the river.

the wiki doesn't seem to mention it but what's the general guidelines for retiring an adventure in your fortress

>if you make custom-fitted armor will they take it off after you leave in your fort proper?

>what about your adventures companions, will they be added as residents or go back to their original town

>will they be able to enter into squads even if they aren't dwarfs
>>
>>175319071
in theory the adventurer should "behave" themselves while you're not playing them and the location they're in is not loaded; ie not get themselves killed, lose their equipped items, wander out of the city, etc
however, this is DF and anything can happen... image related.

companions however will probably leave if their form of contract with your adventurer is not being upheld. if you were asking them to rescue lost children in a goblin fortress, and then you decide to fuck off to a human village for a year or ten while you play fortress mode, then yeah they'll probably be gone when you restore your adventurer.

in theory you can petition a retired player fortress to join the guard, and then your adventurer will basically be a hired mercenary which can be assigned equipment and other things, including specially-made fitted armor, which should then be "owned" by that adventurer and kept if you decide to unretire them and then leave.
>>
>>175319654
Also if you either started from, were a stolen unit-turned-adventurer, or as was mentioned managed to join the fortress guard you can wind up moving back there even if retired elsewhere.

>>
>>175333313
Head gear, including masks and veils, doesn't cover facial features. Robes, cloaks, dresses, togas, mail shirts, and leather armor do. It doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is.

>How do I get him to shut up?
tell him to read the fucking wiki pages about:

- world gen and fucking soil erosion
- dwarf beliefs /personalities /thoughts
- interaction syndromes and the cats that died from alcohol poisoning
- the randomly generated musical forms and dance forms THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY FUCKING DESIGN AS AN ADVENTURER AND THEN PLAY ... IN REAL LIFE

seriously, i doubt any other game has ever bothered to provide *ALL* of their characters with 33 personal beliefs and then 50 facets which interact with those beliefs, each one a sliding scale of -50 to +50 or a range from 0 to 100
including the useless peasant who is standing on the side of the road watching you pass by, who has had his entire life simulated from birth to (inevitable) (un)death.

even the fucking sims games stopped giving a shit about personalities at around 8-12 very vague sliders.

or instead of doing all that shit

turn the fuck around and walk away from him

So tired of this being the poster feature du jour for showing the game off to normies. At least when tantrum spirals were the emergent accidental gameplay mechanic that people yammered about in interviews and articles it served to highlight some of the deeper aspects of the game. This is just "HEY GUYS, check out this WHACKY thing in this CUH-RAZY game lol".
>>
>>175334086
Other than letting them train more until their defensive skills are up to snuff, nope. You can add a healing rate to cartilage, which will at least allow their noses and ears to heal if they're still attached, but nothing to prevent the injuries in the first place if the parts are already covered up.
>>
>>175334372
I have never seen it put that way
>>
>>175334372
But the cat alcohol poisoning thing is accidental too and highlights how deep the game is. I don't know how DF is shown off to the public, but you just sound whiny. Most of the game's playerbase is derived from people hearing about dumb whacky shit like boatmurdered, killer carp, MAGMA, etc.

military uniforms on the wiki

you can definitely setup any civilian who is not a miner, a wood cutter, or a hunter to wear even the most rediculous metal plate armor "clothes" all the time. trying to set those professions with a military uniform can interfere with the "job equipment uniform"

... or just strip them down to a pair of shoes, a shirt, and pants (the minimum to prevent bad thoughts from going uncovered or without footwear)

you can even specifically assign a weapon or armor to a specific dwarf, like a named weapon or an artifact.

Oceans are super weird but not as weird as the random spots where a river is supposed to cross a mountain section but the mountain got eroded away (I think?) and the game still thinks there should be fucktons of water like 20 z above the ground so it fills the available space above where it thinks the ground should be, resulting in huge blocks of water appearing when you enter that embark tile on foot and surprising the ungodly fuck out of you.

The last time I played Dwarf Fortress was probably around 2011 or so. I remember that by playing around with one of the files, you could play 'Human Fortress' instead if you wanted to (or even 'Elf Fortress', but it wasn't recommended as you weren't allowed to cut down trees). Is this still possible with the current version?
>>
>>175343323
You can add a couple of lines in a creature under creature_standard.txt like uh, [ALL_MAIN_POPS_CONTROLLABLE] and a couple others and do that, yeah, can also get non-dwarf residents and fort members now.
>>
>>175342968
A bloodsucking, passive aggressive bitch?

Sounds like my ex, heyo!
>>
>>175343476
Ah, that's good. I actually preferred playing 'Human Fortress' because there were significantly greater challlenges trying to build a 'successful' fortress over land, such as not being able to make easy chokepoints/traps and the ever present danger of flying creatures.

I once tried to create a ceiling made of glass to surround my entire fortress to stop flying creatures from getting in, but it didn't end well when one of the main supports got accidentally demolished in a building expansion, causing the entire town to get flattenned by layers of falling glass. I just wanted to do it again, except the burrow mechanics seem useful in forbidding anyone from going anywhere close to the main supports.

Its definitely got a long way to go

It has some interesting ideas about secrets; all magicians are immune to their own spells, if possible. The crafting system is somewhat inferior to a mod called Adventurecraft but advfort counters that to a large degree.

It has more beasts roaming about, as best I can tell; semimega and megabeasts are more common. Necromancer towers can hold other kinds of wizard too; for example, there's a spiritbinder secret that allows you to summon "banshees", and a vermin secret that allows you to spit magma and resurrect the dead as things that also spit magma.

It's worth a try if you're bored with vanilla but while it's not as ridiculous as Masterwork, it does alter the game noticeably.

when there will be possibility to feed animals and dwarves with corpses and blood, and torture chambers, i want to capture elves and torture them and then make them see how their blood that was spilled from torture is sucked from the floor by giant grasshoppers. ofc this grasshoppers have nothing else to eat, and they can't kill elves, only stare at them, and also copulate in front of them. when elf will die from torturing i'm gonna throw stone block from 10z lvls above on him so his corpse will be smashed and blood will come out for feeding while all other elves will watch. then after few years of torturing i'll free those elves that haven't go insane (for whatever reason) and they will come back to their fortresses or whatever they was sent from and they'll tell the story about blood sucking grasshoppers. giant grasshoppers live only one year so after some time they will have love for blood in genes and then i'll make army of them. army of bloodlusting giant grasshopers. i'll make armor with spikes or maybe blades for them from adamantine so it will be very light and will allow them to jump unhindered while also easily cut enemies and their armor on the way. not to mention all elvish armies will flee in terror once they'll realise what is heading on them in this light-blue shining armors or maybe already heavily stained in blood. they will devastate enemies forces in seconds like locusts do in our world

What does one do with cats and dogs?
>>
>>175355868
Bonecrafts, bolts and meat. Not bad breeding stock. Tie them to a chain outside your entrance to scare off kobolds and stop things sneaking in.
>>
>>175355868
Pasture the cats in your food stockpiles.

They will kill pests there, and reduced pathing costs will increase your FPS.

For the dogs, put one on a leash outside your entrance, and it will spot any intruder. To make it slightly better at defending your entrance, give it war training first.

Keep the other dogs in a pasture for meat and hides.
>>
>>175355868
You should geld the male cats with the exception of a few of them unless you want your frames per second to die. You should train the dogs for war if they are tame. If they are not tame put them on a leash in a pit and throw children in there to turn the children into killing machines.

You can seal cavern with walls, you can even build walls inside caverns with only one entrance through yours staircase, only flying creatures will be able to enter. If you want to leave a door to cavern, leave say three doors in row, once one will be broken you'll see announcement.
>>
>>175360256
No, don't just let the doors get busted, put buildings in front that won't get destroyed but just toppled, like workshops or statues. So you can just have a hallway full of statues of trolls making submissive gestures or whatever floats your boat in front of your doorway, so when the building destroyers come to play, you'll still have ample time to react and you won't actually lose the building objects.

The impression I get is that you're utterly apathetic towards new players because you've apparently been playing so long and talking about dwarf fortress so long that there's nothing a new player could post that would get a you around here.

If fucking drawfags are what keeps you going that's pretty sad you might as well get a deviantart account.

Anons here are also very protective of our general, because it's usually one of the nicer places on /vg/, so if someone stirs up even a bit of trouble, they're told to leave pretty quickly.

From the wiki. It's a pretty good place to check if you have any questions.

>If you want to sell an animal, you need to assign it to a constructed cage first (see above) and then deconstruct the cage by querying it and pressing x. You can then select the cage in the trading menu.

I'm apathetic towards everyone when I'm asleep, and sometimes just not in the mood to do anything besides pass by the tab and bump if it's got a 10 up there^.

Some newbies come in like "ok, I thought I figured this out, but everybody started drowning themselves after my woodcutter fell in a pond and died, are suicide pacts a thing? how do I turn them off?" and it's wonderful.

Then you get the ones who come in here and bitch at us because they felt like we should hold their hand and walk them through doing something; which is extra dumb because, hey, if you fucking //ask// for someone to explain how to do something, ain't nobody gonna bitch at you about it.

Depending on your skill level and the difficulty you've set for yourself (the biome you embark in, how wild/evil it is, how many resources you can find), the game can range from survival to sandbox.

It's possible to die within the first few minutes of play, and the challenge is eke out a foothold in an unforgiving and/or terrifying realm without getting murdered by zombies or giant gray langurs. (Or if you're new to the game, just learning the ropes will be pretty fatal to your unfortunate dwarves).

On the other hand, if you're in an easier biome and/or get yourself secure lodgings, you can start expanding your fortress, industries, military, and aim for becoming your civilization's Mountainhome.

Or you can just dick around and try to pump molten rock up some fifty stories to make a magma moat, mess with water physics, build a massive tower, capture prisoners and create a bloodsports arena, catch and tame exotic monstrous animals, or whatever.

So yeah, it's a pretty open-ended game, regardless of how good you are.
>>
>>175371243

another note about animals in cages is they still need to graze if they're grazers

it's entirely possible to kill off your wagon pack animals while "trading" them because they're starving in their cages, and dwarves don't know how to give them food yet

>>
>>175371524
Yeah, cage traps. It really depends how you have the map set up, but placing them in choke points or often-trafficked areas is easiest- for example, you can remove all the up ramps of a hill except a few, forcing everyone to pass through the same area if they want to go up/down.
>>
>>175372063
Depends on the animal, they show up in the biomes that match them. Check the wiki and it'll show up where they're normally found.
>>
>>175371524
It's only possible in fort mode. Well, worldgen if you're an elf. But yeah, just lay out a lot of cage traps and catch whatever's indigenous to your embark site. Put your animal trainers to work. Right now I've got tame populations of wolverines, giant black bears, giant cougars and ostriches. I could do mountain goats, ibexes, and wombats if I felt like it. A few other species only need a little luck to catch a breeding pair, or for me to stop slaughtering them as soon as i catch them. And that's not even touching on the cavern creatures I've got, all of which can appear at any embark depending on their pop spread.

When choosing your embark location, you can press Tab to swap display modes and/or information shown.

One of those shows the rough elevation levels for the squares of the... local area screen, I think? numbered from 0(low) to 9(high)- and *, which is super high. You can guess the location of cliffs and stuff there.

The one with the numbers is the cliff indicator, and shows the average change in elevation on each embark tile. The elevation map is the one with the blue -> white color gradient map. They're both useful for what you're talking about, though, and can give you a really good idea of your map's topography with a little practice reading them.
>>
>>175372719
Oh, right. I forgot there was even an elevation gradient map, I just use the cliff indicator because that's what I'm usually the most interested in. Especially where rivers are concerned, because waterfalls are fun in every sense of the word.

Rimworld is kinda fun for a minute, but it's definitely nothing compared to DF.

You don't, you influence them, but direct control is only available in adventurer mode really, so you wanna [q]uery the trade depot, [r]equest trader at depot, you can also have [g]oods brought there to trade with.
>>
>>175376589
You're right, although you can always train them and let them go wild again. It doesn't take long for the ones who were only cage trained.
>>
>>175377080
So if there is a merchant on my map I can't do anything about it since I dont have a depot?
>>
>>175342085
That's not any more true for kaolinite than for any other exclusively sedimentary stone. You could replace kaolinite in your sentence with jet or chert or bauxite or bituminous coal and it would be just as correct. Three of the five fluxes and two of the three iron ores are exclusively sedimentary, so anything that indicates a sedimentary stone layer means a higher likelihood of having those available.
>>
>>175378656
it takes like 10 seconds to make a depot
>>
>>175378656
Correct. Well, mostly. If the trader isn't from your own civ you can order an attack on them.
>>
>>175378992

>>175378952

>>
>>175378862
The anon I responded to implied that having kaolinite on top of flux and iron would be too good to be true. So I pointed out how likely you are to find kaolinite together with iron and flux in the first place.

It's not that you're lucky to find them all together. More like you find one, you find them all.
>>
>>175378656

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Squad#Attack_Order
Since you're asking that it's likely that you don't have a handle on setting up a military yet, so I would recommend following some links from that page and getting that done. By the time your next caravan arrives you can be ready.
>>
>>175379091
there won't be a next time if you attack them. they will enter war on you and start sending sieges every season. if you don't even know how to trade with merchants or make an attack order, you're not ready for sieges.
>>
>>175379382
It said they were leaving but I guess there was still time.
>>
>>175379358
You need to send a broker there by pressing 'r' in the menu.

When the broker has reached the depot, you can trade.

If you don't want to bother making a broker, you can just press 'b' to send any dwarf there, but it's recommended to use a real broker, since they'll accumulate a bartering skill, and also allow you to appraise items.
>>
>>175379238
I see what you mean. Your post seemed to indicate that you thought kaolinite was unique in that regard. Just a misunderstanding. Anon tends to be very enthusiastic about kaolinite (and rightly so in my opinion), so I thought that enthusiasm might've translated to some misinfo on its significance.
>>
>>175379358
Select the option to move the goods to the depot, and choose some stuff. i recommend crafting some stuff beforehand just to trade, no need to be actual money. I recommend some wooden or stone crafts and furniture since you're early in the game, but later on the best thing you can offer them is metal trap components. but for now, let's stick to the simple stuff. you will either need a special noble (the broker), or select the option with the letter [b] after selecting the trade depot. this will allow any dwarf without a job to trade. you'll then need to press [r] to request a trader at the depot. oh, if the traders are elves, DON'T offer ANYTHING made out of wood, this will anger them and they will imediatly leave.
>>
>>175379435
Eh, it depends on the civ. Humans are pretty easy to provoke into a war, but elves are surprisingly hard to pick a fight with, especially given their aggression in worldgen. Killing their merchants and diplomats will rarely get them to send a siege. It's like they've gotten used to it.
>>
>>175379486
The wagons bypass your site but merchants will still send their donkeys and stuff down to trade. You'll just have fewer options about what you can buy, at least until the next caravans roll around.

Lol don't do that haha, I never do more than medium history. A very long history is really more than anyone would want, a lot of the civilizations will have died by that time in my experience.

I like to do medium/large world-size, depending on if I'm on my laptop or desktop, short history for fortress mode, medium number of civs, medium number of sites, very high beasts, very high savagery, and max for mineral occurrence. You might want to turn down the beasts and savagery for an early game of course.

Someone's gonna call me a fag for linking this, but follow the tips here for your first fortress game.

Yes, but you need an ally that lives on the surface. Humans are not acclimated to the dark of the caves as dwarves are, and as such we can fight the elven menace on their own turf in the sun. First the elves, then the goblins, and finally hell itself.

I'd love to try this but its an enormous task to do as you basically have to remake half the game to make kobolds even playable but its possible. There exists a mod already though that lets you play as kobolds and i doubt i could ever top that.

I'm definitely modding. I reskinned and mildly tweaked vanilla serpentmen, harpies, and mermaids, as well as centaurs from someone else's mod, and threw them into castes of a single race per the wiki's advice for playable entities. Maybe it's the entity itself, from when I messed with the numbers for values, or maybe it's something else; perhaps I should start up a vanilla game to compare. The more you change, the more things can go wrong, and all.

Does anyone have their own lore about why the continents in DF look like they do? I mean well, the biggest "worlds" are only around the size of Texas, so my autism demanded I find a reason why that is. Here's my headcanon about how it works:

>World is actually an endless flat plane of ice and snow, with dirt and rock below that.
>The sun is actually one of many orbs of light that float above the surface, phasing in and out of existence over periods of hundreds of thousands of years.
>When one appears close enough to the ice, a hole will melt exposing the rock and soil, and allow life to flourish. The poles are actually massive walls of ice marking the boundary of this hole, and any oceans will eventually lead to a similar wall if followed far enough.
>Sentient races naturally emerge from these pockets and do what they do in-game, but they are not alone.
>Mega and semi-megabeasts are incredibly powerful and hardy creatures that roam the icy void, and when they spot an island of life, they congregate to it in order to feed.
>Eventually a hostile race starts to take over the pocket, or the monsters become too numerous, and the sentient beings must flee and find a different pocket to start anew in.
>Thus they all traverse the snowscape in different ways, dispersing the species across reality, which is why you get the same species every time you generate a new map. You've simply created a new life pocket and attracted both the wandering races and the predators that follow them.

I know the myth update will add its own procedurally generated lore and try to explain why everything is like it is, but until then I'm sticking with this explanation.

>That's... actually a neat setting idea.

Thanks! And thinking about it, I could probably still keep it working even with the lore generator. The gods could just be very powerful spirits that can control where souls go and grant blessings and all that, but are totally bluffing when they call themselves the creator(s) of the world. Other dimensions or afterlives or what have you are simply pockets that are entirely dominated by one or more of these beings.
>>
>>175411180
No, why would you?

The ocean itself counts as a different region than the surrounding regions.

HOWEVER, the environmental variables close to the shores (i.e. drainage) often makes it so that these regions have aquifers after all. It's not as easy as 'next to mountain'='guaranteed aquifer', though.

Prithee anon, mayhaps thou wouldst endeavour to clarify thy usage of 'yon folks'?
>>
I'm new to the game, been doing OK, no problems that can't be solved by the wiki so far. But what takes a lot of my fun away is that a lot of difficulty comes from unnecessary complication. Both in terms of UI (No search function for the fort inventory? It's not even in alphabetic order. Why can't I just ctrl+f stuff to see how much I got?) and processes that could have been much simpler (like making soap).

I will continue learning it since there's no other game like it, I even love the ASCII graphics, but at this moment it just frustrates me.
>>
>>175450291
I guess my question is "When does it get fun?"
>>
>>175450291
Yeah, that's how it is.
I wonder if there will ever be an accessible UI or if they already established that that's just part of the game.

What happens if you dig to hell, release the demons, have them kill your fortress and later go to that spot in Adventure mode?
Is the whole area now Terrifying?
Will the demons stay there or spread out attacking the whole world?

Are there actual uses for all those different minerals or is it just stuff like "build statue out of x"?

Do AI civilizations actually have cities like the player ones? If I were to go into adventure mode and spawn right on top of a city would it actually show me an intricate city?

Stones all have different material values, melting/boiling temperatures and densities, affecting their sale values, usability as magma-safe items (pump parts, floodgates etc) and their object weight, which carries both into their ease of use and also their effectiveness as a weapon when you blast it out of a minecart into a wall of goblins and trolls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iu-j8TsYEsQ

There's a little bit of skipping about to find each shot but you can see a big different between launching bundles of copper bolts and stacks of gold bars. That end shot is pure beauty.

Different materials have different properties. Some are light, some are heavy, some cannot be melted even my magma, some make good sharp weapons etc etc. If we are talking about stone types though rather than metals its mostly just value and weight that matter, although some minerals have unique uses.

Ai does have cities you can visit with shops, houses, guards, lord etc pretty much what you'd expect them to have.

>>
>>175460769
Not a bad start, you could use that 3-tile entrance hallway and begin rebuilding further down in the stone. Smoothed stone looks nicer and increases room value, leading to happier dwarves. Also gives you the opportunity to set up more defensible entrances with kill-rooms, traps and stoppages. You'll be likely to get lots of migrants soon, so get on building more furniture and digging out more rooms.

You're doing good for a first fort, mine ended up getting flooded when I ignored a wet stone warning and not realising the pond was 2z deep. Once you're settled deeper you can wall over sections of the upper levels and open access to them from further inside the fort for storage or workshops or whatever you want.

start with a military dwarf and maybe a bit of armor. first thing you should do is build a chest/armor stand/weapon rack and assign it as a barracks, then have your military dwarf training 24/7. put the barracks next to your entrance and werebeasts will be no issue, since a dwarf with even mediocre combat skills will kill them without a scratch.

I managed to fix the foreign weapons mod i made (shurikens and greatbow were missing a ranged skill tied to them, meaning you would never get better at using them and no matter how good you were with throwing or bows it wouldnt make a difference)
Download it here: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12871

I also updated my Draconian mod since so many of you seemed to like it. I didnt write down everything i did but here are few things i added/changed that i remember:
Dragonkin now speak with lisp, night vision, are carnivores.
Regular dragonkin have their flame breath removed and moved to a special caste.
There are now 3 new castes along with regula draconians that are totally not inspired by anything.
Flamer: Female only fire breathing draconians with very fast wound regenation. most common of the three.
Crusher:Female only big bulky draconians that are prone to rage and will try to break everything they see, including your dwarves. On the bright side they are pretty dumb compared to the other dragonkin and learn non-combat skills very slow.
Elder:Male only. Rarest of them all, these ancient dragonkin posess both the flame breathing ability of the flamers and wings capable of flight, they are usually leaders of draconian groups and cities because of their age, intelligence and social skills.

You can download it here:
http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12874

(Unrelated note: For some reason when i modified the files inside the winzip folder rather than taking them out, modifying them and putting them back in, it caused the files to become ''Admin only'' and now i cant move them, remove them or really do anything about them despite being an admin myself.)

I can try making a potion that makes you bigger but im not sure if the effect can stack and if it can there could be some problems like not being able to hit anything and crashes if you grow really really big but im talking about 10x the size of an ingame adult dragon here which are fuckhueg.

tree anon here

In my mind, I wanted to have the psych. ability to turn elves into trees and then make wooden objects out of them, and gift them to the elven king, that kind of stuff

Yeah, the point of the potion would be to do over the top stuff for the sake of it
stack that shit nigga
>>

Ugh. Mind is really bending trying to visualize what that would look like.

That's pretty unfortunate, your civ might be not totally dead and you can get that juicy large 3rd wave.
>>
>>175477979
nope
3rd wave was 3
4th was 4
So combine having 22 adults with no skills, and having to do Queen's requirements for the holdings.
fun

I wanted them to be cute harmless giants, the color of cookie dough, that live in peace being mainly farmers and get savagely dominated by the other races
I have no problem with certain corrupt, brutish castes, say chocolate cookies, which may be bigger and more powerful, being cannibal
In fact, having many castes would be pretty rich in content, if you want to make it
I dunno if you can make certain castes be mindless and other being intelligent. If you can, most castes would be unintelligent, but a couple , for example, vanilla cookies, would be intelligent
Could be great if they didnt get wrecked by everything, make their skin, tough crust, or something

Oh wow, you better start cross training people as marksdwarves since you probably won't have enough for a full squad.

I have booze, a tavern, a temple, no one is dumped in the garbage, and they even have their own room. Some dwarves eh.

Like I said, I have everything a dwarf could ever want. My fort was supposed to be really comfy :'(.

despite the constant troglodyte incursions, not to mention the massive corpse stockpile full of giant spiders, werebeasts,
megabeasts, and goblins

>Forts are able to collapse under bloated government or corruption running rampant
Play 2D or the earliest 3D which all have the fortress """economy"" enabled and watch as:
- no dwarf can afford to use a bedroom for longer than a month because your skilled carpenters can only build masterpieces now
- buy fancy meals made out of multiple types of alcohol which are even more expensive than what nobles could pay for (except nobles and legendaries sleep/eat free anyways)
- buy fancy trinkets for a happy thought and then keep them in their room and never use them again

2D fortresses would inevitably become a nightmare of more than 20 nobles which would constantly "adjust" prices of certain goods, that would basically cause waves of homelessness to sweep the fortress.
Of course dwarves could still eat plump helmets and sleep in any non-room or barracks assigned bed, so they wouldn't be totally fucked (unlike real life) but they would still be so unhappy that the dreaded tantrum spiral was a true possibility.

Wait I might have figured it out, her mother was recently turned into a werebeast and then torn apart by a hydra as part of a werebeast squad. The rest of her family aren't here, and it's noted that she "cracks easily under pressure" hopefully she'll cool off in prison and emerge happier.
>>
For those of you who have tricked out $1000 dollar tower PCs, how much longer do your forts last than forts played on crummy laptops like mine? If I make my fort too large I always have to delete my file in under 10 years of dorfin'. Can forts last longer or is FPS death a problem for everyone?

>She feels lonely after being away from X for too long
>She is uneasy after being unable to acquire something for too long
Did you lock her up in a room or something anon?

>She is uneasy after a lack of decent meals for too long
prepare better quality meals and have a better cook

>she is bored because of lack of abstact thinking and being unable to practice martial art
not sure, if i remember correctly both can be fixed by doing certain jobs.

>she was disqusted after retching in miasma
keep your corpses above ground if you dont want miasma or keep them in a locked room away from your dwarves

>she was shocked at the unexpected and grieved at somebody's death
dont have your dwarves dying, i dont think this occurs if any other creatures die infront of dwarves

>she was annoyed at the lack of dining tables
self explanatory, place down more tables for your dorfs

Hope that helped!

>She is uneasy after being unable to pray to the rumored mist for too long
I have a temple, and other dwarfs are praying to zalud there, so that shouldn't be a problem

>She feels lonely after being away from X for too long
>She is uneasy after being unable to acquire something for too long
I'm mandating some nice clothing to be made, along with some bone trinkets for dorfs to wear

>She is uneasy after a lack of decent meals for too long
I have plenty of masterwork meals, with plenty of variety

>she is bored because of lack of abstact thinking and being unable to practice martial art
I have a library set up, so she could do some thinking there I guess

>she was disqusted after retching in miasma
Yeah couple of troglodytes were killed by my guard dogs in the cavern and started rotting. Probably the final nail in the coffin that caused her to tantrum

>she was shocked at the unexpected and grieved at somebody's death
Like I said before, her mum died recently after getting infected by a werebeast

>she was annoyed at the lack of dining tables
My tavern is super nice and has plenty of dining tables

She' just had a few major upsets recently, she's still haggard and upset, but she isn't tantruming anymore. Hopefully she doesn't kill herself, she was one of my first migrants :'(

Ordinary cave spiders do no harm.

On the contrary, they're invaluable for the silk.
>>
>>175455274
if you make a barracks walls 2-3 tiles thick, they will stay inside the room.

they'll just hit the wall and explode instead. not really but kind of, maybe
>>
>>175482130
Eh, I bought like 20 fucking sheep from the dwarven caravan, and I have a pig tail farm, I'm fine for cloth production, while silk just lies in a basket, forbidden until an artifact requires it.

>I have plenty of masterwork meals, with plenty of variety
Some anon in a previous gen mentioned that quality doesn't always matter, it's more about the individual dwarf's preference, so she probably wants passion fruits.

also
>unable to practice martial art
>likes spears and bucklers
>good kinesthetic sense
>values martial prowess
>doesn't feel anything after seeing stuff die

Just draft her and give her a spear and a buckler, she's a born soldier. She can have short and swift fights, but not too long ones.
