Final Fantasy Record Keeper, a F2P Final Fantasy game with sprite grafix and turn-based gameplay akin to FFIV and the like(not full-on turn, but rather timed turns), with as much(if not more) playable characters as MFF(from FFI to XIV, with some from FFT, WoFF, and Mobius) and a truckload of customizable specials and skills, plus weekly events(usually, most of them bring at least 1 new character).

The equivalent of Crystals here would be the Mythril, which is relatively easy to get, and is used mainly for expanding your inventory and doing equipment pulls, where you get a random piece of equipment based on the banner where you pull it from(say, right now there's a XI banner, so you're more likely to get XI stuff), and the highest of them usually give a unique special attack to a given character. It's gacha bullshit, but according to people who tried with other games, it's nowhere near as bad as them, since you always get at least one useful shit on them.

You play by using stamina(3 minutes recharge between each point), which cost varies between dungeons, and you get more by collecting 5 shards from story dungeons.

It's similar to MFF in that you can spam your strongest shit(on auto, even) without a care to get by in the early game, but by late and end game you'll need to have a good grasp of the game's mechanics, which can be overwhelming and so you should read the guide in /ffg/'s pastebin.

Finally, like I said, the devs are pretty generous, and so you'll get plenty of currencies handed out like candy, either by login stuff, or during events.

tl;dr, it's an old-school FF game focused on the battles with lodsa characters and rather complex mechanics, certainly a lot more than MFF's.

Nope, you complete a certain dungeon(they usually have 3 stages each, some more, some less), and then you'll get rewarded with a specific character. Event dungeons usually have plenty of a specific game's characters.

You can also use a sort of item called Soul of a Warrior(or something like that), that you can get from login bonuses, events or certain missions; these act as a selector, more or less, since you can unlock whomever you want with them.

I forgot to mention, but there's no paywall-locked stuff in there, real cash is used to act as a substitue for the mythril.

How do the WBI chests work? If you score higher, do you get better chests with better loot?

It's more about the skills and equipment than the character themselves, since they're dependant on their special/limit attack to be great, most of the time. Sorta like how some unis make characters like Elsa viable in MFF.
