>The story had not enough message for my tastes, but fuck it.

It's a bummer for you if you came to the game for such messages, but Yoko Taro has said numerous times that he doesn't feel it's his job as a game creator to actually impart messages onto his players. Granted, just by virtue of how freely you can interpret stories, some messages will always end up being conveyed to players, intended or not, but the impression I got from Taro is that he feels the interactive nature of games provides players with a space to search for meanings/messages themselves, rather then being told. That attitude certainly bled into the existentialist side of the story, I'm sure. I'm sorry I don't have more quotes -- my bookmark collection is kind of unmanageable right now -- but here is one such quote that hints at his attitude with regards to imparting messages unto players, extra relevant because it's about Ending E:

>In the midst of development, we had an idea of bringing out messages from overseas rooting for another player, and we wanted to build that into the structure. The idea was to bring out messages from conflicting countries – countries that could be in political conflict. We had that idea initially, but we didn’t feel like it was right for the designer to be forcing that on the players, so we shifted into providing a structure where random messages would appear in the player’s feed and ending, and have the players figure out for themselves what the purpose of this was.
http://www.siliconera.com/2017/03/28/yoko-taro-speaks-varied-endings-meanings-nier-automata/

Side note: I'm fairly certain he got the idea in the quote above from the Make a Friend Coke Machine he cited during his GDC talk. It's a vending machine with a video stream from the border between India and Pakistan and the point was for people from these conflicted areas to virtually shake hands through the screen to get a coke.

Why do they classify them as "machine lifeforms"?
Is it the concept art showing their skeleton faces? The weird leaps and bounds they can make by combining together in different ways?

Also, was Adam's creation in the fuck pit dumb luck or was it in the robots all along?

So the Replicants in the first Nier aren't androids right? Only Devola and Popola and I assume whatever leads them were right?
The Replicants only recently gained self-awareness, but how long has it been? Kaine has memories of being a child, so it must have been at the very least 10-12 years ago.
And since she also aged in that time, what the fuck happens when they die of old age? The Gestalts are supposed to be "placed in their corresponding shells", but how is that supposed to happen if the Replicants age and die?
Tyrann got into Kaine's body, but wasn't that only because she was fucked up to begin with?

If the Gestalt project started that long ago, why would Nier and Yonah still be around for the Shadowlord and his Daughter to take their bodies back? Shouldn't their Replicants be long dead by then?
>>
>>174406921
Who says they were the first Nier and Yonah replicants?
I would guess they have been just replicating them at another Gestalt Project facility when one set of them dies off.

I know this German rapper called Edgar Wasser, really great university student type rapper, puts lots of thought provoking stuff into his songs. He also denies having any interviews at all and made numerous songs about how the only message that his songs have is that they don't have a message. Been listening to his shit for a few years now so I'm used to this kind of thinking, but all I can filter out of it is this:

If you say you don't have a message, but still make what amounts to a statement like a song or a video game with certain contents, all it does is increase the number of answers to the questions you raised a little.

Every story points towards somewhere, even if it is a broad firing zone. So does this one. I always felt like saying it doesn't is at best an exercise in smoke-bombing, just to muddle the waters and cut off the most obvious solutions.

The game was intensely bleak, to the bone. The game was... open, also. As a guy who's not played any of Yoko taro's games before, I ended up comparing it a lot to Dark Souls. You know what I missed in this game? A Solaire type character. Not enough Gurren Lagann in this shit.

Thoughts on why these ladies are hanging around chatting in 8B's room? She's the lead deserter from the YoRHa Deserters subquest, so I'd expect her room to be empty, but there's an Operator and some combat unit in it. They aren't even talking about anything close to desertion or 8B. Just gossiping, more or less.

Datamining I found these audio files, which are basically both sides of these two androids's chatter:
https://a.safe.moe/FyGSQ.ogg
https://a.safe.moe/cL5gX.ogg

Straight-up gossip with no relation to 8B. The interesting part is that androids work out and somehow improve their figure from it, though that's probably less canon and more Taro writing what he thinks girls talk about.

What's weirder is that 8B or her Operator have a line about her destroying their enemy too:

Because the Androids are the Nazis/Axis powers in this World War II allegory. Brave foot soldiers fed propaganda lay down their lives as the leaders of their society, who hardly even consider them human, callously move them across the board from on high in pursuit of a master race that doesn't exist.

Or this is all bullshit I made up on the spot because it's more interesting than saying 'they thought the Nazi aesthetic looked cool' for the twentieth time.

I wanted 9S to at least get counter-lewded a little. The point where Adam/Eve asks him if he wants to **** 2B had me laughing till I had side stitches.

>>174408502
These androids (the Yorhas at least) apparently have fucking dopamine distribution centers in their brains (Jackass' combat data mission), can get drunk, can die from eating food that is poisonous to them, are susceptible to their kind of NBC warfare etc. It's safe to say that whoever designed them went way further on the literal meaning of Android than was actually necessary and just tried to reconstruct the human body in a mechanical copy as close to 1:1 as possible. I'm fairly certain that their blood is largely made of nanomachines and if they'd ever figure out how to have sex they could likely even have kids.
>>

The number of yanderes in this game is terrifying.
>The Opera Singer
>Eve
>9S

Who am I missing? The game should all be be renamed to "don't touch my waifu."
>>
>>174408502
It's only weird because in the sidequest where you have to find medicine for that moose the characters talk about how humans got fat from eating too much and 2B & 9S are like "Fuck that shit!"

You could easily bullshit something into the canon where android bodies optimise bodyparts's efficiency for use and using it through working out thus alters their shape, but, like I said, that possibility is annihilated, even in headcanon, by the aforementioned subquest dialogue.

As I said, though, it just seems like Taro writing generic girl gossip and less like him trying to extend the canon. I'm not even sure how accurate the translation is, but it seems like an easy enough inconsistency to just ignore.

>>174408621
I hope so too, but I wish they actually base it on her model because the Kaine one looks like it's based on Kaine's model, going by the butt. Not hating on Kaine at all, but 2B's butt is way bigger and I'd love to see it in Kaine's lingerie.
>>

Besides the obviously sad ending to that quest, I always felt really, really bad for the questgiver because his dialogue makes it seem like he's just overwhelmed with sorrow and randomly reaches out to random human rituals he knew to do something about his grief.

I'm not entirely sure how common that name actually is. Most characters in the game seem to refer to them as "the machines" and even Adam, when you meet him in the Copied City, needs to correct himself to use the "Machine Lifeforms" moniker. But either way, the machines have clearly attained "life" in some form, even though they're artificial, just like the androids, so I always took that term for them as referring to that. The androids, who operate under the assumption that machines are dumb idiots with no consciousness, using that name doesn't make a lot of sense, but like I said, I didn't get the impression it was commonly used.

What's interesting is that apparently the Japanese original is closer to "Bio-Machines." I don't mean to imply that it means the machines were supposed to come across as more organic, but that it ties into frequent allusions to plants and plant life with regards to the machines. In the Japanese version, they even go so far as to call areas with machines in them "infested" with "Bio-Machines", similar to how actual plants are retaking the city. Might not seem meaningful, but there are a lot other comparisons to plants from machines to aliens that carried over into English which make that info more important.

Is he? 21O is fairly standoff-ish as well until she goes all sploosh about wanting a family of her own. The other women he interacts with are Anemone, with, as far as I'm aware, 0 flirting between them, Devola & Popola, with maybe a little flirting here and there but nothing significant and maybe the Commander being all tsun but still revealing the great YoRHa secret to him just for kicks. From these women only 2B is actually after the shota dick, the others seem to be acquaintances at best, not really giving me the impression 9S is somehow super successful with women.

Lil kids / shits like him need a Bro to balance their natural brattiness out and smack them back in line whenever they start totally fucking up. All the bullshit that got the second half of the game going totally off the rails could have been prevented if he had a proper Aneki type character to backhand him a few times and ask him a few of those back-breaking questions anime is generally so fond of, then hug him and tell him that bros can handle this together.

Then die, because older bros always do. Such is lyfe.

>>
>>174415928
No, he's not a soldier. I am a soldier, and no soldier in our armies fights with this kind of... framework, lets put it like that. He's a -warrior- type straight out of mythic tales, because the war is all he knows. Soldiers have a world of peace to go back to, and expect to go back to also. A family, a home, friends, hobbies. They KNOW it MUST be over, generally at some point within the next three to five years unless shit goes seriously wrong.

He? He's nothing without the war. He's exclusively fighting. A peacetime scenario is an out of context problem to him, so of course he cannot even imagine it, or work towards it. You could make an excellent point that he's simply a child soldier, and that would be true for almost all Yorha. He's broken from the get go, because while normal people have to LOSE their connection to ordinary life first, he never had that proper foundation in the first place.

There's another thing like this when you go back to the Forest in route C. When some machines attack you they shout "accursed humans!" Presumably referring to you, an android. But they know what an android is and there are no humans, so why do they say humans?
>>
>>174417268
If you got ending E, the three most lethal (and by now, vindictive) members of the force survived with their memories intact AND Jackass got the entire report on what Yorha was from the get go through one of the pods. If there would ever be an Automata 2 (fat fucking chance tho) the story would likely be about the three of them teaming up with Jackass to kick infinite amounts of crusty old Android general ass.

>>174417356
I assume the aliens were prepared to encounter humans specifically, and programmed the machines for them, although again, maybe the data is incorrect?
>>
>>174417268
What was it's actual purpose? It was to trick the resistance into thinking that the humans were still alive right? But then what's the point in killing off YoRHa if they are such good soldiers? This is a stupid plot by retards in the first place. Instead of allowing the Androids to grow up and deal with the fact that the humans have been dead for millennia, they still tried to clutch onto that old lie.

Accept reality and move on. Give your own life meaning instead of pining for dreams in the past. Pic related. 9S has the same issue in the latter half of the game, and it fucks him and his up in turn.
>>
>>174417423
Actually yeah that kind of works because the machines in the forest are disconnected from the network (I forgot about this), so it would be understandable if they thought androids were human or just didn't know the difference because they only have their original programming and whatever they've been told by the king and other disconnected machines
>>
>>174417052
All black box signals are offline.
The only non-black box android in project was Commander.

It's an automated server. Probably just relayed the last messages commander put into it.
When 2B is dying, server is talking about rolling out new models that would ensure victory. And earlier Commander tells 9S they are going to mass-produce his model because of how awesome he's.

Since 2B's job is to kill 9S when he finds out the truth, does that mean she herself knows that the humans are dead? I thought only the commander was allowed to know.

Then make your own fight! Set your own goals! Dream your own dream! This is the only thing separating androids from humans as far as I can tell!

And fuck, this is exactly what Yorhas could do. 9S and his t-shirt plan for 2B show that. And they have machine lifeform cores. It REALLY weirds me out that the most advanced ones (emotionally speaking) have machine lifeform cores, because that implies that the machine lifeform tech is just so much more advanced than the old human tech that they ALWAYS have the potential to evolve, even when left singular and alone, disconnected from the network.

"Commander in charge of YoRHa. Consequently is privy to a myriad of top-secret information. She is the only android within the Bunker that is not a YoRHa model. Strict in her commands, she shows little emotion out in the open, but her worries over 2B and 9S are apparent. 9S is an experimental, top of the line model that does crazier stunts than 2B and arguably goes on the largest murder rampage of all characters utterly decimating anything on his path and wrecking flight units on foot.

There's a point when you realize that it's too late for you or anyone to blaze trails. Some thousands of years after the extinction of humanity is about that time. And then you have to somehow continue living despite understanding that. That's also roughly the starting point of Nier: Automata. You might consider replaying.

Ironically, by pretending the humans are still alive they remove the slim hope of bringing the humans back by developing the technology to birth new humans from the genetic/memory information on the moon server.

Destiny is a concept made by humans to describe human view on the meaning of their existence. Everyone in Nier: Automata except Emil is a machine. Even the concept of destiny, hope, anything, they'd have to borrow from humans. They can't be genuine about it like you are because it was never something that belonged to them let alone made sense to them. Throughout the game all they do is desperately try to understand the meaning of all sorts of things by emulating humans, which ends up in failure and is ridiculed in the case of the machines.

There's no destiny when there's no self-consciousness, and Automata deals with the problems that arise just on the brink of that consciousness forming, in case of the protagonists and the pods.

Your suggestion, although reasonable, is on a completely different wavelength from anything happening in the story.
>>
>>174420889
We tell them the truth by spreading machine report. Together with a message that they need to find a new reason to live and that they aren't different from humans at all as far as consciousness goes.
Sure, some androids will kill themselves. But it's necessary for them to move forward.

>>174421112
I can't imagine this is going to end well.
>>
>>174420673
The main problem is that soul is a very concrete and tangible thing in Nierverse. Can't exactly create humans when you don't have spare souls anymore.
>>
>>174420828
Sure, the machines might just give up out of boredom, but the androids obviously have no idea how they work, they didn't even know the aliens had been dead for over a millenia.
>>
>>174421051
They're human enough in my eyes. Hell, if you'd drop me in there and nobody would tell me I'd likely think I was surrounded by humans until somebody gets shot in the face and just says "Oh damn, I'll have to rearrange the wiring in my skull again".

Seems like they just don't have the right thought basis to get it going on the proper. They -don't- think. They just circle the drain of "lets kill some more machine lifeforms forever". If even a single one of them would, like, get shot in the head and his servility-circuits would get fried, and he'd decide that all he wants is to GTFO, shack up in an old missile silo and convert an ICBM into a Mars one-way ticket, that'd already be a break from the rails they seem to be on.

I understand the possibly is extremely slim, but if they aren't trying it's 0%. I suppose they realized the possibilty was near zero and decided that a pointless and endless war was the better solution to a meaningful existence.
>>
>>174421482
They're very clearly not human once you penetrate into their mind, they struggle to understand the concepts of free will, consciousness, purpose, and relationships. After all, in the end they're just machines created to serve mankind. They're essentially just mimicking what humans thought and dis because "That's what they'd do", you can even see this on a more blunt level with the pods who are just starting to question the purpose and logic of the bonds they've created with their androids.

It also doesn't help the last human left in the universe who could try to explain any of this, is a 12 year old child whose mind has been worn by many millenia of decay and magic
>>
>>174422171
Well that's what the pods did who are about as robotic as you can get, but the androids themselves seemed perfectly fine. Especially the named main cast. 6O especially springs to mind. 9S himself wants to relax with a bath and dinner because it "feels good" in his own words, so clearly they're already kinda on the same wavelength and only need some war-free times to really come into their own.
>>
>>174420981
I've also seen horseshit theories that none of the androids have skin on but instead they're pulling a Laughing man and hacking everyone so they see them with skin on.
>>
>>174422109
I think the other major issue is of course the lack of genetic diversity, even if they managed to recreate humanity. Whatever they make would die off again in only a few generations. It's probably why Command said there's hundreds of thousands of humans on the moon, to ensure the idea that repopulation is viable
>>
>>174422386
The Devola and Popola story even states that they have artificial skin and blood.
>>
>>174422404
If you're a machine, you can just generate ten billion variances in the same genome and see which ones are capable of survival, then chuck them into the mix. Evolution is mutation is just random flips in the genetic code, handed down over millions of years. Machines can do that easily.
>>
>>174422484

Read the intel. It certainly seems like a nerf to me too, but it was considered an improvement as b-mode was considered "unstable". The intel directly states that 2B was supposed to be an updated A2, with the removal of b-mode and enhanced long-range combat ability listed as the improvements. I know that in-game they have the exact same combat prowess, but story-wise A2 wasn't designed to be compatible with pods and so was less efficient at longer ranges.

I'm not saying that 2B is a better A2 (except in the sense that imo she's a more interesting character).

But she was considered to be a better A2 by YoRHa command.
>>
I've only played the game once and don't remember all the details perfectly, but I recall something about them saying they gave the androids emotions despite recognizing that it causes more inefficiency. I don't get it, why would they include something if it has no operational benefit, did they explain somewhere and I missed it?
>>
>>174421338
Isn't that only a problem for the gestalt/replicant system? The androids have the technology to grow replicants in something like a test tube, but they wouldn't live now without their corresponding Gestalt. The replicants were all copies of people that used to exist with gestalts being their original souls. What is stopping them from making a completely new baby from genetic data instead of trying to revive an existing soul? Android command must have some future plan for the genetic data they saved. It could just be beyond their current technology level as cloning usually requires an existing mother or egg cells.
>>
>>174430079
>russian machine lifeforms are all named after famous russian writers and philosophers
>Goliath-class Pushkin
>Dostoevsky getting all the robot pussy

>>
>>174430302
It makes enough sense to me that while B-mode might be better for an individual android, it would be more of a liability for the actual organization as a whole.
>>
>>174430396
>>174430396
I don't think that they "gave" them emotions directly except in the sense that any sort of AI, even the inferior-but-not-really AI of the yorha, develops emotions.

Also it might cause inefficiency in some places, but help in others. Yes emotions could cause missions to get sloppy where a lack thereof would not, but without emotions they would not have as much of a desire to protect their fellow units or the bunker, and they would not have their love of humanity. They could have loyalty to humanity without emotions, but not love for it. I think I remember seeing something about how the combat data they use to build better yorha units is also emotional, not only combat skills but also the emotions felt in the heat of combat. also jackass mentions that while fighting the units feel something similar to love, which presumably makes them better combatants and more desirous of fighting, and that also wouldn't be possible with no emotions

>>174430565
>what is stopping them from making a completely new baby from genetic data
this is a question that has to get answered a lot so let's try and remember it this time boys

they have the human genome
they do NOT have human DNA

any further questions you have on the "but why can't they make a clone" subject should be answerable by looking up the differences between DNA itself and a genome
>>
>>174430565
Yeah but maybe a cloned baby wouldn't have a soul? Clearly they need a human soul to consider something human or they'd just regard themselves as the new humans. imo they should all be worshipping Emil as the last human.
>>
>>174430302
It's interesting that A2 was using B-mode for 4 years now without any major drawbacks aside from fuel filter.
Feels like it was a deliberate nerf because A2 also ended up being way too fucking strong to a point she wrecked entire squads of E models sent after her so YoRHa higher-ups decided that giving too much power to individual unit may be indeed unstable if unit becomes a deserter.
>>
>>174430714
Yeah; when you go into b-mode it causes an explosion in an area around you just like self-destruct. That alone seems like a hell of a liability; if you're self-destructing it basically means all is lost and this is a last ditch attempt, but b-mode can be used more safely and regularly, so that start-up explosion alone I can see causing lots of trouble.
>>
>>174430396
Androids created by humans were designed without emotions. Their AI developed emotions over time, mostly because of jealously at seeing replicants gain their own independent will and feelings.

Scene 20 in the YoRHa play kind of explains why the androids are given set personalities, memories, and emotions too:
http://nier2.com/blog/yorha-stage-play/
>>
>>174430754
I mean, I agree with everything you're saying but I just don't recall coming across anything in the game that said their emotions were anything but a liability. But I missed a lot of the documents so was just wondering if there was something I didn't see about it..
>>
>>174430931
They don't know about or understand what Emil is. Their first thought when they see him is to kill him.
Maybe 2B/9S knows depending on when you finish his quest and he explains his story to you, but they probably didn't think too hard about it.
Also, Is Emil really human anyway? He is an immortal magical bio-weapon.
>>
>>174430754
Grimoire Nier also says this:
> As a result, since the "Replicants" possess no reproductive abilities and need to copy the Gestalt's data to regenerate their bodies, they will die out within this generation.
So if they have data on both Gestalt genetic data and replicant structure data maybe they can figure out how a Gestalt repairs a replicant to create a proper human.

Clearly, the Nier universe was never meant to have biological human or human-like beings in the first place. It seems like the odds are infinitely stacked against them and they only really existed to create "artificial" humans like the androids who can survive without Gestalts perfectly fine.

I don't care if it's a new idea or ten thousand years old. It's a shit idea. From start to finish.

And I would call it in fact the cheapest shot, because there's absolutely nothing that actually can be blamed on anyone. It's just "Too bad, you were never meant to live." And then everyone fucking dies.

In those retarded scifi stories where people get killed by the machine / AI / biological creature they themselves created, you can at least say that they caused it in some circumspect way even though that's flimsy as shit (given that this is just the most fucking varied ripoff of the ancient story of the Rabbi and the Golems). But this is the same flimsy angle that Dark Souls also likes to use to create a bleak as fuck setting: The setting is rigged to be bleak from the get go, and any marginally comfortable living you eke out will be snuffed out by the march of time itself very soon.

And I don't like this. It might be because I study engineering and my head is filled with thoughts of how I'll build the coolest shit once I'm done here that will make the world a better place, but I just don't like this.

Yeah I don't really see how humans getting destroyed by their creations is any more or less stupid than humans getting wiped out by a disease. Both tropes have been done plenty of times before.

Apparently you just feel like the disease trope is more bleak because it's an arbitrary death that humans themselves can't be held personally responsible for. But that shit happens, people die from diseases and shit all of the time.

There's no reason why fiction should shy away from that just because it's uncomfortable and unfair; doing so would be trivializing fiction by making it safe. So I feel like one could make a well reasoned argument that the the destroyed by creations trope is actually the more flaccid of the two.

I have some questions I would like to be answered since I feel I missed a lot of things in the story.

Did the 3 characters survive because of the memories being recovered?
What was the cycle from the Project YoRHa exactly? Were the events on the story just an other cycle ending as expected or did it end by being an exception?
Was N2 part of the Project plan or was it an anomaly?
Did the androids die at the end of each cycle too? They would be confused noticing the bunker getting destroyed and being rebuild all the time.
Also were the Pods the true core for the Project to work?

No, Anemone has been around at least since 8 descent, i.e. 8 machine war.
Most likely, but they rebelled.

>Did the 3 characters survive because of the memories being recovered?
Yes, the pods also seem to rebuild their bodies as you can see from one carrying 9S' real hand.

>What was the cycle from the Project YoRHa exactly? Were the events on the story just an other cycle ending as expected or did it end by being an exception?
YoRHa itself is not really a cycle, I believe. It is part of a greater cycle of driving android evolution through more or less building crash test dummies to throw at machines and dispose of once they have the data they need. YoRHa ending was part of the plan, the exception was the machines also evolving to the point of building that Tower that could take out the moon server. That's what the Tower was built for, at least. As you know, seeing the pointless struggle makes them realise how foolish it all is and they decide to use the Tower to fire all of their knowledge into space, hoping to basically start anew there.

>Was N2 part of the Project plan or was it an anomaly?
No, the YoRHa plan is entirely devised by the androids to boost android morale and improve androids to further the war effort. N2 is unrelated to that and a manifestation of the machine network as it is involving.

>Did the androids die at the end of each cycle too? They would be confused noticing the bunker getting destroyed and being rebuild all the time.
The regular androids survive, there are even a few YoRHa units knocking about. Like I said, the events of the game aren't cyclical and YoRHa doesn't seem to be either. There are other space stations run by the androids, though.

>Also were the Pods the true core for the Project to work?
They were overseeing it, yes.
>>
>>174441462
Yes.
YoRHa was created to make androids think humans were still alive and to give them purpose to keep fighting the war. However, it was rigged from the start, since """"command"""" made a backdoor for the machines and set up everything to blow up when the moment was right. This part is the most confusing one so most people don't get it or start to make their own theories to find a hidden purpose or who the puppet masters are.
N2 was the machine network hivemind. The machine network wished to evolve so they started imitating humans and letting machines do weird shit, like Pascal's village or the church.
There are no cycles, it's just a very long war.
Yes. They were supposed to let their supported units die at the end of the project, but they developed conciousness and rebeled against their orders, rebuilding 2B, 9S and A2.

So the backdoor wasn't to purposely end a cycle since there are no cycles at all?
I really got confused when I started to read shit about The Tower and the Resource Unit and looked like it was something expected to devour all YoRHa and giving them challenges for to be recycled into better units. This with the help and by manipulating Machines with the capability for the
creation of huge things (like Copied City).

Can you clarify about the "devour" thing? Unrelated to the YoRHa project right?
>>
>>174444125
>So the backdoor wasn't to purposely end a cycle since there are no cycles at all?
No. It was used to destroy YoRHa without leaving a trace of evidence so myth about humans on moon will settle into the minds of androids permanently.

Commanders of resistance forces probably would simply not allow anyone to go to the Moon and check things out after it.
>>
>>174444330
But the plan is still to get the bunker destroyed right? Then rebuild?
>>
>>174444431
No rebuilding. They would just absorb combat data and use it for further generations of Resistance forces. Or so the plan was before N2 said "fuck you" and left this gay planet.
>>
>>174444125
The backdoor was there on purpose, just not really to end a cycle. Like I said, in the end the greater Android Command sees YoRHa as crash test dummies and once they have whatever they need to build better models, they dispose of them by sabotaging them through the backdoor and getting them run over by machines.
>>
>>174444547
So 2B didn't had to kill 9S repeatedly? This means a cycle that got me confused a lot.
>>
>>174444691
She had as long as project was running. When Bunker went down in flames, her very first action was selflessly sacrificing herself for his sake after leaving him a heartfelt message about how she truly feels about him.
>>
>>174444919
So she killed many 9S and not each 9S "every cycle". This is the part that confused me because she had to kill 9S many times but we only see one.
>>
>>174445067
>So she killed many 9S and not each 9S "every cycle"
No, she was killing him only for 3 years and there's no cycle in that. They both were born during 14 machine war.
>>
>>174445067
Well, you kind of see multiple. Not only does he get new bodies, but you see him "die" in the prologue and then meet a new 9S with a fresh memory in the Bunker. They're the same person in the sense that they start off with the same personality that you can recognise as "9S", but whenever she wipes him, it's back to that state, losing whatever experiences they've had together.

If you want to know more, there's actually a canon novel that predates the game and covers a little expedition where 2B has to kill 9S. It's not significant new info, but it's a little glimpse into events that happened before the game:
http://nier2.com/blog/2017/03/07/nierautomata-world-guide-novellas/
>>
>>174445067
The only "cycle" in the game is 2B killing 9S.
>>
>>174445495
Which is not a cycle. Just 2B repeating executions on 9S models. I think I got it.
>>
>>174444125
What we know for certain is that the backdoor was made on purpose to let the machines in, and to blow up the bunker along with project YoRHa. There's also a "Black box data transfer" included in the plan, so the contents of the black boxes were supposed to be sent somewhere. Anything beyond that is speculation that needs to be verified.
The resource units were obtaining materials, recycling machines and gathering their data. The tower was indeed devouring anything it could because in the end the machines decided to create an ark with as much information as possible in it. They also got all of the data in the bunker and the moon server.
So yeah, the tower is unrelated to YoRHa, but I think it was greatly affected by the project.

Is there a clear point at which the machine plan failed, or something specifically that they didn't anticipate or plan for? It seemed like they expected 9S and A2 to make it into the tower. The only thing I can think of that they probably didn't anticipate was the pods becoming sentient.

This is the thing that I just have trouble suspending disbelief with. My assumption is that it's supposed to be similar in principle to cylons being deathless by storing their consciousness, but to me realistically if you kill one of them then that one is just fuckin dead and the new one is just like a clone with the same personality.

So basically every time you get killed as 2B and get a new body, it's basically a new character and the one you've been playing up until then is just dead. I don't think that's the canon interpretation, again I think the story really assumes something more like BSG, but it's just hard for me not to think of it that way. But I don't like it because it's depressing, so I try to go along with the canon anyways.

That's kind of what I was thinking as well, but I find it somewhat contradictory that they would evolve to the point of presumably high intelligence, but then still get basically like does not compute error like a machine over a simple paradox and that that would cause the whole plan to crumble. It's like they are supposed to be highly evolved intelligences and unevolved computing machines at the same time.

This bit of the plot bothers me. I get that they needed a twist for Route B and it makes sense to reveal it at that point as the game starts to take away the things 9S derives meaning from, but I find the Commander handing 9S Level-S Confidentiality intel to be nonsensical.

We know from 6O's dialogue about how the Commander's stringent attitude is for show and that she lets a lot of things slide, so one way to understand her breaking secrecy would be feeling bad for 9S in some way and helping him after he got close to the truth, but this isn't a satisfactory answer to me: First of all, there's a huge difference between not picking up clothes in your room and leaking top secret info that would undermine your operation and secondly, we know the Commander also genuinely believes the YoRHa plan is a good thing for the androids, because she says so in her letter to Jackass, so her risking the premise it's built on being ruined seems out of character.

A2's lines at the end of Route C also make it clear that 9S finding out about the moon server is one of the things 2B would be sent to execute him for, but at that point in the story 2B, isn't even around to kill him. If the Commander was handing him the intel to basically taunt him and have him mindwiped, it seems incredibly clumsy to do that with 2B not being there to kill him and leaving open the possibility of 9S talking to others on the way.

Another angle would be the Commander being fed up with YoRHa, but as I cited earlier, her letter does not give the impression that she'd turn on the project. She also doesn't have Level-SS clearance to know about the fact that YoRHa, including her, is meant to be disposed of. It's unlikely she found out about that some other way, because during the early phase of Route C, she seems genuinely shocked by the events and despairs when she learns that she probably got infected too. So her turning on YoRHa being the reason she leaked intel doesn't seem to be the case either.

Thoughts?

She obviously has no access to SS-level info but she's not a brainless pawn so she probably starts understanding that something is wrong. She sees something in 9S and basically entrusts the future to him in case their final assault against machines fails for some reason.

9S is portrayed as being very secretive and reticent. The commander probably just believed, possibly from prior experience, that he would want to keep it to himself until he could talk to 2B about it - in which case it would then be taken care of.

What I still can't reconcile is why 9S finding out would be so bad and yet 2B knowing the whole time is fine. Why is it that she can be trusted with that information and he can't?
>>
>>174450960
The beginning maybe 5% is the toughest part of the game since you have no chips yet, only one pod, non upgraded weapons, and only a handful of restores, but you quickly snowball out of control to the point where every fight in the game is trivial(unless you're on very hard I guess, then good fucking luck)
>>

Because she doesn't possess the same degree of free will and capacity for evolve as 9S.

The 2E concern is noted in her letter as well. She clearly cares about the two considering her reaction to the end of the Grün fight, but I didn't really get the impression she'd care about them enough to potentially sabotage YoRHa. She stayed pretty loyal even facing death, after all.

>>174451173
You don't need to reconcile it because there's little indication that 2B does know. The Memory Cage makes it fairly clear she just gets the order to kill 9S when it's time and does so without asking questions. Remember, she's pretty obedient and just wants to get shit done.

I never got the impression that it is the consensus. There's nothing saying she does know, there's only the canon novel where she gets the order to kill him not knowing why, and most of her characterisation making clear she cares about getting shit done first and foremost, including executions. Both times she gets the order to execute someone ingame, the YoRHa Deserters subquest and when they meet A2, it's 9S asking questions and 2B just going in for the kill. The closest she gets to asking questions is admiring 9S' curiosity for wanting to find out about A2. That's it.

I really don't think it's reasonable to assume she knows.

Yeah, I thought her line about how 'it's Command that has betrayed you' was implying that she knew some shit about Yorha's true plans. Turns out that I guess all she really knew was that 2B was actually 2E, and she was just telling 9S that yorha was betraying him by lying to him setting him up to be killed.

It's actually a neat tidbit after the fact, but it's pretty misleading before you know what's going on.

>>
>>174450051
the thing to remember is that the thing with 9S finding out the truth has happened before. It might be that in the past earlier versions of him have ended up causing serious damage as they tried to find out as much as they could. His intrusion in to the system was noticed so it makes sense for the commander to just decide to give him the information before he starts talking to too many other people. Since we see at the start of the game that other androids have no way of knowing when someone has a memory wipe it would be easy to get rid of that version of him and put another in his place.

On of the problems the game has is that it doesn't really do a good job of explaining what is so different about each series of Androids. Aside from being told 9S is part of the "Best" run of them it is never really clear what that means. The fact that it seems like all it takes is flipping a switch to be able to hack means hat there really is not much of a change going on.

My best guess about how the Yorha models work is that they all have the same level of intelligent but they are imprinted with conditioning that makes them more or less flexible. They can still break out of the conditioning, hence the need for E units but it is just less likely with ones like 2B and A2. However it seems that being more flexible makes them better at information warfare and so they make the trade off with the partnership.

It would be easy to imagine that at this point they have a pretty solid timeline of just how long it takes a 9S to "break" so they could send him out solo at first. It is why 2B and 21O constantly try to get him to change his path, they have both seen this happen many times before and want to stop it but are still too conditioned to make the kind of leap needed.

Fuck. Why do all the OP weapons look like literal garbage!? I'd rather have a cool looking weapon than have a stick and cool chests.

The only other weapons I even considered using were those outdated YoRHa ones from one of the shops. Haven't seen anything better than the default katanas and 2B's heavy katana. Which is fine because they work for the whole game, it would just be nice to have some other non-shit options. Weapons DLC when?
>>
>>174453021
Like I said, with a good chip setup your weapon literally doesn't matter, and having a less OP weapon is more fun desu since you get to experience fights rather than bulldoze them. This really isn't the kind of game where you need to minmax
>>
>>174452270
Spear of the Usurper feels like trademark 9S weapon.
>mind control passive
>crit passive that works with spear throw
>>
>>174453284
I get that, it's just that it would be nice to have some options. Not because they'd be better, just because as much as I do like the default weapons for all the characters, it kinda meant that the weapon system might as well have not existed for me.

the screenshot's time and that letter may have been written between long stretches of time.

she starts with believing in the project's goals, but is having some second thoughts about the e units.

maybe some years later after sending execution orders on 9s one too many times the guilt finally crushes her, she breaks down and decides that enough is enough. fuck this project. she then waits for the moment 9s discovers the truth again, but this time not to kill him, but hand him the intel and see how it ends.

Shinsekai Yori is a show I would highly recommend, it's just incredible.

Texhnolyze, Lain, GiTS, Neon Genesis Evangelion are highly regarded Sci-Fi entries that deal with the psyche and robots and so on. Psycho Pass and Rah Xephon I could also recommend in that vein.

I would also recommend stuff like Noein, Ghost Hound and Eureka Seven, they don't quite fit the mold but they're great sci-fi shows in their own right.

Blender used to have 2 versions. One with an installer, and a "mobile" version that you could just run from any directory. A couple things have (or at least used to) it, Firefox did at least.
The idea being that you could put the files on a usb and run it on any computer.

Looks like blender still has it, but it's not labelled as such.

>You are SE CEO.

How fucked is he? Do you think he could pull off a great game working within the limitations (rated T, no multiple playthroughs or endings, forced use of FF tropes) of the series?
>>
>>174472570
Oh, okay. Usually that's called a "portable" version to avoid the confusion I just ran into. Not like Blender would be particularly heavy to install, and it's literally free, but good that it had what you needed. I'm not really sure how exporting the model will work out, though. She's rigged with BlenRig 5 which includes stuff like the bones to control anus and vagina size. If that rig isn't exported along, you're gonna lose out on stuff or have to redo it yourself.

>>174472726
As far as I'm aware, they used the ingame model as a base and then cranked up texture resolution, added proper hair since you can do that in stuff that doesn't need to run in realtime, and obviously added genitalia and breasts.
>>
>>174472787
He would probably make a really heartfelt FF game with careful throwbacks to classic FF titles, meaningful and touching story and some light mindfuckery like game jumping into 16-bit FF perspective at some point. Also would deconstruct the shit out of classic FF garbage tropes about crystals, for example. And if there's gonna be a tragedy, it would contain catharsis and transformation unlike FF15's garbage plot.
>>
>>174472845
>Usually called a "portable" version
Aaaah, fuck You're right. My bad, I haven't thought about any of that since like 2009.

It's cool, I just want the mesh (and textures are a bonus) anyway. If I really needed to I could pose in blender and export the static mesh.
>>
>>174472787
The Engine Blade's weapon story is better than FFXV's, so...
>>
>>174472787

There must be someone behind them but i don't think they are numerous or have enough influence aside from doing shady shit and spreading rumours. They're androids. They do not practice sexual reproduction. Any sense of gender is purely based on them imitating humanity. As they lack the biological imperative to find a mate of the other sex in order to reproduce it would only make sense that partner pairing (insofar they would actually form couples) would be completely random.

There are some custom shaders applied to the skin as well. Probably can't see them too well in this super neutral quick and dirty render, but if the skin ends up looking weird in your export, it's probably due to the shaders not translating well to whatever software you end up using her in.

You know, as much as people here like to talk up 9S, it's frankly kind of ridiculous that even if 9S had hacked her 4 times, going by the cutscene A2 still almost certainly could have murdered him if she wasn't listening to 2B and trying not to kill him.

That really doesn't look like 'almost had her' to me, that looks like 'overextended in pursuit of an opening and was about to get his shit pushed in'.

I'm not saying it's not impressive the things he does in that and other fights, but clearly hacking is not the one size fits all solution to combat that it seems to be in the gameplay, or else the actual story would be playing out much differently.

I felt like the overall design of Automata was more creative, but Nier definitely has it's own thing that's worth the experience. The core concepts of the games are different. Where Automata uses the game form to explore nihilism and catharsis, Nier uses it to deconstruct typical hero tropes through contradictory perspectives.

Automata is a better game overall but Nier's story honestly beat the shit out of me. I didn't think it was possible to make a game that dark. It gives you just enough hope and good feels to keep you fully present and maximize the effect, like a true sadist. I'm impressed how attached I got to Yonah despite her lack of screen time.

There are so many little details that make things even worse later, like when you realize what the "snow" is the intro, and when you think of about Yonah really went through over the course of the game and what she was willing to do despite that. ;_;

I do wonder, though, what the fuck DevPop were thinking in Nier, I mean, what were they trying to accomplish by setting you on that path? And why do they refuse to explain anything at the end? I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if Nier would keep going anyway, but still, why not even try?

Despite getting half spoiled I'm kinda of glad I didn't play Nier first, since I think it might have drained me too much emotionally to appreciate Automata for what it is.

>what the fuck DevPop were thinking in Nier, I mean, what were they trying to accomplish by setting you on that path?

>>
>>174482376
I guess I might be remembering wrong, but didn't they give you most of your leads on your quest anyway? How would that advance Project Gestalt? I mean they sent you to the Aerie to slaughter the shades there, what purpose does that serve?

Now that I think about it, the android programming would explain the lack of explanations. They must have had a mental block preventing them from revealing any details of the project, as well as forcing them to stop you. So I guess they couldn't have done anything more by that point.

I think this is right, though? Hence why 2B is so distraught during ending A/B. She even says something to the effect that "that 9S" would be dead. Prologue 9S is also dead, and we kept playing with a new one.

I took it more as she's just sad that he looses all the memories and the bond that they've developed together and just gets reset to square one, so she feels like she's always loosing everything she has with him.

He doesnt really even seem all that worried about it, his attitude is just kind of like eh whatever I can just be reset, which doesn't make it seem like he's very fearful of it being an actual death, but rather just memory loss.

Plus we know for certain that their actual consciousnesses are not directly tied to their current bodies, if not then 2B wouldn't be so relieved that he uploaded on to the machine network before she strangled him. Clearly she believed that his consciousness had been saved despite his body being killed.

But didn't he have his memories saved on the bunker from like an hour ago? He wouldn't lose everything, just his experiences fighting Eve, not such a big deal really. You're right that he didn't seem too worried about it.

I guess I assumed that the androids generally don't think about this (maybe a mental block?) since they have to restore from backups so much, constant existential angst would certainly ruin their combat effectiveness. 2B is in sort of a special place since this problem has been thrown in her face over and over in the worst way.

I don't know, they may have just handled the concept inconsistently. On the one hand they make it clear that their consciousness can actually be preserved, and on the other you've got operators telling you to not 'really die' out there. It's not really made abundantly clear what the difference is between restoring from backup and really dying.
>>
>>174489016
9S was the highlight of the game. That VA did a good job in the later half.

2B was OK. I heard she comes off as a snarky bitch in the dub but it didn't really bother me. It made the relationship between them better. JP=stoic idol that 9S looks up to NA=tsundere coworker

I actually really liked whoever did the Commander and A2. Those two bitches can take turns stepping on my nuts while calling me useless, pathetic, etc.
>>
>>174489502
I didn't like A2's more angry moments, but her calm voice is pure sex
>>
>>174488237
Especially the way the song mixes the different language versions. In a way it's almost Disney-esque "unity" schlock but I'll be damned if it isn't executed perfectly.
>>
>>174489016
2B sounding more bitchy than she does in the Japanese original makes some moments between her and 9S feel off knowing the full story. Seems like she goes beyond the "I'm staying emotionally distanced so I don't get hurt" part to just being mean in some spots, which I didn't feel was the case with Japanese audio.

Eve is a little boring too, but that's about it. Otherwise I think they did a great job, especially 9S' voice actor. I'd still lean more towards Japanese, but it's a good dub for sure.
>>
>>174489397
You might be right, but it still makes sense when I think about it. Suppose there is a transporter that works by killing you and spawning a clone at your destination. After you used it to get to work every day for a year, would you still worry about it? After all, "you" made it through intact every time.

The YorHa androids are being restored from backup all the time, why would they be attached to their individual instances so much? If they were it would be considered a bug of sorts. Remember the YorHa androids aren't even supposed to be sentient, that's why they have machine cores, and presumably thus why there's no issues considering the individuals to be disposable.

If the normal resistance androids ever get backed up/restored, that would shoot this theory to hell, but do they? Did anyone ever mention anything like that?
>>
>>174490012
Considering the amount of stress she's no doubt under I think her being snippy fits pretty well. And Eve's actor did fantastic, especially after Adam dies. In fact I'd say he does a better job of conveying anguish and despair than 9S's actor.
>>
>>174488593
I think his last backup was just after the sinkhole appeared.
He doesn't return to the bunker until 2B saves him from Adam and at that point he doesn't sync to the server because of strange noise.
>>
>>174490012
it's hard to really tell the inflections with other languages, but Japanese 2B sounds more sullen to me, which seems to make more sense for her character. But then again, it's Japanese so it could be something more like a demure cuteness thing that I'm mistaking for sullenness.

A2's VA does irritate me a bit, but it seems like anime dub actors just default to angsty teen girl acting whenever there's a female character that's angry or aggressive.
>>
>>174490683
Here's the thing.
The VA's don't decide how they voice a character. There a voice director for these things and they tell the VA's how to express their lines.
>>
>>174487413
Engels keeps killing me on his first swipe after popping up through the bridge for the first time. I swear to fucking christ I'm dodging it but it always kills me. Everything else he throws is insanely easy to dodge but I just can't get that one.
>>
>>174491183
OH!
>Similar to his smashing attack, this time the attack is much more powerful that it creates a shockwave when it hits the ground. Dodging it won't help due to the shockwave so you'll have to jump THEN dodge in mid-air. It'll get stuck on the ground so you have plenty of time to deal a ton of damage to it.

Well that fucking solves everything. brb offing myself, but not before I finish this god damned section.
>>
I don't know why they decided to fuck hard mode so much. It was much better in demo. It's like Itagaki worked on the game.
>>
>>174491396
What changed? I didn't play the demo?
>>
>>174490343
It's possible, but I just don't like the idea that 2B is a different character every time she dies or transports. That's just really bothersome to me. I mean if there's definitive proof that that's what's happening then I guess I'll just have to deal with it, but otherwise I'd prefer not.

Again, even first time playing it I just thought it was really weird that the operators tell you as long as you back up your data you'll be fine but warn you to not get yourself killed for real. They're certainly making a distinction between those two things, I just don't know what. Unless they're just talking about getting permanently executed for desertion or whatever, but it didn't seem that way.
>>
>>174491557
Enemies dealt less damage (or 2B had more health, one or the other). There may have been other differences but the result is that the demo was slightly easier while still being challenging. Enemies took a chunk of health but didn't 1 or 2 shot you.
>>
>>174491571
When they die and are restored they lose any memories and mental changes that occurred since their last backup. But otherwise they are the same person.
>>
>>174491571
I believe the reason Operators tell you this is because there's a chance the memory upload might fail. So before androids die, they upload their current data/memory to the bunker. If you don't do it fast enough or if there's interference or connection issues then their "self" at that time will die and they'll need to respawn with an older backup.

The prologue death scene is a bit muddy after you learn the truth. The first time you see it, you assume that 2B was able to upload and then respawn with her memories but 9S had lost his memories of meeting her. But after learning the truth--and the assumption that 9S is advanced enough to backup his memories--we can also imply that 9S just lying about not uploading in time to fool 2B.
>>
Why not have DLC costume for the superior Dad!Nier?
>>
>>174492030
People keep saying that 9S actually kept his memories. Doesn't the novella portion of ending D conflict with this though? I need to read it again but I could have sworn he presented his meeting with 2B in the prologue as the first time he met her. Considering the novella was him alone with his own thoughts there's no reason he'd be lying. If he kept the previous memories via backup I would think he'd think differently of that "first" meeting.
>>
>>174492297
>People keep saying that 9S actually kept his memories
It's just conjecture. It's possible, but it's also not confirmed anywhere.
It's something to think about.
>>
>>174491845
Well, regular enemies take about 4 shots, and 2 hits from the big guys. The only thing that one shots me is engels, which IS annoying because I can't remember every stage of this fight exactly (my fault I suppose), so when he does something I'm not always 100% sure how to avoid the damage like in the case of the shockwave attack I've been trying to dodge.
Again... I suppose that's my fault for not remembering the fight. I'm sure it didn't 1 shot you on normal so you had a chance to learn and figure it out.

This is just fan speculation but there's significant evidence that he IS aware of 2B's identity.

It's a dangerous game of cat and mouse that they're playing. The two characters are lying/keeping up a front about what they know and who they are. They do this because they care about each other.

There's a short story here: http://nier2.com/blog/2017/03/07/nierautomata-world-guide-novellas/

From that, we can assume that they've been in this cycle many times before the start of the game. But this particular time, 9S attacks first via an ambush.
