I can't tell which thread we're using so I'm reposting here.
I'm new and I'm really enjoying the game but I have two questions.
What are the best ways to deal with cave adaptation? I heard people roof the map, but that sounds like a lot of work.
What are animal people for? The ones that appear in the wild and not the visitors that is.

I deal with cave adaptation by keeping my dwarfs underground. Any dwarfs that need to access the surface should do so regularly anyway. If I want any of my military dwarfs to be able to fight above ground I schedule them to patrol some above-ground burrows for a month every year.

Animal people are for training your military.
>>
>>174284561
>What are the best ways to deal with cave adaptation?
have people stand outside every now and again so it doesn't set in. try an outdoor temple/zoo/statue-garden/tavern

doesn't work

what do you mean "for"
they're just strange fantasy wildlife/half-humans
>>
>>174285950
I wondered if I could catch them and turn them into valuable members of society and then breed a fortress full of hybrids.
>>
>>174286490
Not yet.

But as of version 0.42, entire populations of animal people occationally migrate into other civs. It doesn't happen in-game yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was added in the future.

Yes. The water didn't come from the pipes for that purpose though, they came from other pipes that are meant to deliver water elsewhere, but which also have a cavern drain. A drain which I opened unintentionally. The plumbing designed to flood the cavern with water is still full. I've never actually used it, though I was planning to do so soon.

It's not that bad, since goblins can wear armor sized for dwarves. You can easily get some from a player fortress.

As for 2), bogeymen will not attack you as long as you are indoors. If the houses still have roofs, they're safe.
Safe from bogeymen, that is. It's possible for any critter wandering on the map to ambush you in your sleep, regardless of where you are. Against these, the only advantage populated towns have over deserted ones is the ready availability of meat shields.
>>
>>174318294
There are also the wildlife ambushes, though. Since they spawn directly on you, they can kill you before you even wake up.

I don't know if wildlife ambushes can happen in abandoned sites. It sure as heck doesn't happen in populated ones.

I was really hoping to make an "officers" lounge for the better dwarfs
>>
>>174321485
We can only hope that future versions allow us to create "reverse burrows", that is, areas where only selected dwarves are allowed to enter.

This will also be a good way only allow workers into potentially dangerous areas (i.e. magma forges and the occational magma animal that sneaks in through them).
>>
>>174321795
Agreed.
I posted in the last thread about not wanting dwarfs to enter the caverns, HOWEVER I really don't care if McbumfuckSoap Maker wonders in and don't come back.
>>
>>174321795
You can make burrows that only exclude the areas you want restricted and then assign all of the dwarves you don't want to give access, to that burrow.
>>
>>174321886
I don't get this attitude.
It's easy to train any dwarf up from dabbling to legendary in the various industries. And barring that they can join the military. Or they can be haulers.

Pull the drawbridge in, closing the gate. A moat around the fort walls (soon) full of iron spears.
Station my 20 iron-clad marksdwarves on the fortification and fire volleys into a swarm of goblins, while 50-dorf leather-armor militia prepares at the gate.
Lower the bridge and sweep across the broken goblin force with the militia.
Spend next fucking year cleaning up the battlefield and dumping corpses just to have it finished before next siege ;_;

Been doing this for past 25 years, I think all the cities around my fort have fallen, dwarf and human caravans have stopped coming around year 20 after constant reports of shit being taken by goblins 24/7

Squares are limited natively to 24x24 on a 1920x1080 screen, 80x45 tiles, nonsquare you can go up to 24x36 (technically you could do 24x48 but it hurts my head) on a 1920x1080, 80x30 tiles, giving 50% more pixels per tile.

Graphics sets still require encoding the creature representation so it maps to the identity of that creature, theoretically you could use the cached images your brain uses so you don't ever have to think "that's a cat" but instead just automatically recognize "KITTY!" along with numerous other mappings stored and tied into your visual cortex.

Unfortunately the features which trigger those automatic recognition functions aren't easily represented in a 24x24 or even 24x36 tile, much less a 16x16 or smaller ones.

,,,(^..^),,,
That //should// make your brain pass it through a few checks and come up with "cat claws+happy eyes=happy cat" just like :) triggers "smile" or (_._) should fire the "butt" recognition function... maybe (_o_) if you watch a lot of anal vids?

Seeing a little orange blob which kinda has a tail shape and kinda has pointy ear shapes and looks like it has at least four legs might trigger the "cat" function, but most likely you're going to have to link to it and learn what it represents anyways.

CLA tricks a lot of these functions since you are primed by the reading trigger of a word that starts with a "c" and your brain can cue off of the pointy ears/facial features to fire the "cat" function easily.

With ASCII you're still learning "grey c is a cat, white c is a cavy, green D is trouble, brown D pulls wagons, white H is a mount, red H is gonna eat you" type stuff.

Your argument is that you can't parse the information as well, which is not the same as saying the information isn't there. ASCII tilesets are limited to representing a number of unique units of information equal to the possible combinations of colors and tiles (4096) which is further limited by the fact that creatures only use a portion of those tiles. A graphics set has a vastly higher limit to the number of unique units of information. For a 24x24 set there are over 133000000000000000000000000000000 possible tiles before you even start talking about colors. That doesn't even touch the question of visual isomorphism, which is a whole informatic quality that is almost completely lacking in ASCII sets, and which most graphics sets at least attempt to achieve.
I personally use an ASCII set because I prefer the aesthetic. It's silly to argue that they contain more information though, especially if the basis for that argument is your inability to process the information in a more information-dense medium.
>>
>>174339897
quantity<quality

Sure, it's technically possible to arrange all the pixels in a near infinite amount of ways. But it's far easier to tell the difference between two letters than to tell the difference between two near identical pictures where only a few pixels differ.

It's also far easier to tell the difference between two of the game's default 16 colours than to tell the difference between every thinkable colour a creature graphic artist may have used.

Most creature graphic authors I've seen haven't even managed their palettes in a conscious manner. Instead, they've introduced new colours arbitrarily, resulting in countless numbers of near identical colours in the same set. In the real pixel art community, this behaviour is considered really bad form.
>>
>>174340523
I'm not making a quality argument, as I said I prefer ASCII. I'm just arguing against the claim that ASCII presents more information than graphics. It's de facto false, and your inability to process that information is irrelevant to the question.

>Hmmm, I've had mountains which were covered in ice from the biomes overlapping, but not proper glacial formations like that.

Imagine if it would actually depend on snow deposition in a given area.
I mean we already have values for precipitation and temperature, so we already know how much snow a given tile gets. Now we'd just need to calculate if more snow accumulates vs how much snow melts away. We also have drainage, so maybe that can play a role. Does the temperature value track changes over the year?

The longer I play DF, the less I'm interested in aspects like fortress defense or industry, and the more I'm interested in more realistic world generation and simulation of a living world with dynamic civilizations (wars and functioning economy) and dynamic nature (ecological and geological changes).

I'm glad that DF is actually improving in those aspects, and it's great that fortress mode benefits from it.

I wonder if Toady will ever implement a more interesting world generation. I mean we have myth generation soon, and we have history generation, but in between or before that there's so much potential for a more detailed geological generation.

Would be interesting if they started to fuse biomes together sometimes, to form unique biomes from them, like volcanic glaciers, and ashen forests, with ash-coloured trees and grass, and lava flowers and rivers.
>>
>>174349038
I'm not sure if I follow your logic, but from a fantasy world perspective, this would be pretty great.
>>
>>174348487
Well, ontologically speaking, the myths should make up the foundation of the entire physical world. It makes sense that Toady works on them before making more advanced worldgen.

I agree that improved worldgen would be nice after the myths. Tectonic plates and seismic activity would make the maps far more interesting. Instead of just generic hills and valleys, different kinds of formations could be formed by goelogical processes.

Simulating all these processes could give us exciting new natural formations to explore, like canyons, rock shelters, overhangs, faults, and so on.

Furthermore, civs should be able to interact with these formations. Some entities might build entire villages under rock shelters, or build huge bridges over faults.
>>
>>174348487
River generation at the very least will have to get a pass when he does boats, and myths/magic will include their own geological features so there'll be something there. He's talked before about how wants there to be more complex geological formations, so both of those will be opportunities to work on it.
>>
>>174349340
Well, imagine if sometimes when two biomes generate near each other, like a forest and a volcano, the more "malleable" of the two biomes (the forest) would gradually adapt to being near a volcano, and not only change the appearance and temperature of the biome, but also cause new fauna, plant-life and weather patterns to emerge.

It's a pretty weird concept, but I think it could work well given enough time and refinement.

I think it's fair to expect an eruption if you embark near an active volcano, and to expect problems with floods if you embark near the sea.
Similar things apply to making your wooden above ground village under a glacier or earthquakes along a obvious fault line (imagine seeing a line of volcanoes on the world map).
Of course it needs to be more or less predictable to a certain degree - and there should be rewards to taking the risk (easy access to magma for example).

So you enjoy tilesets completely fucking up your text considering tilesets and fonts were not separated by default in the game?
Also, what do you have against multi-z level view? Its nice, especially when you watch your dwarves on a fortified wall fire downwards into a goblin army.
>>
>>174367119
I was one of the people that thought it would be imperative for DF to show more than 2 z-levels at a time. The more TWBT screenshots I saw, the more I thought it was horrible.

Now, I don't know if that's because the usual tilesets and common TWBT settings just fucking suck -- and if reasonable settings do indeed improve things -- but as it stands, TWBT makes things worse instead of improving the situation.

>>174368109
No, but it helps. More important factors:
>distance to the nearest pits

So I'm not the brightest bulb in the batch and I punctured an aquifer. I didn't really know how aquifers work and I figured it would just drain out eventually, but I realized it wasn't going to anytime soon and I decided to wall it off with some walls, doors, and floodgates. Thing is I'd like to get to some of the ores. How can I drain this place enough to minimize the area that the aquifer is in? I know where the aquifer "tile" is (top right) and the goal is obviously to eventually wall that off so that I can keep the area nice and clean.

Is this possible or is this area too far gone? Most of it is only 1-2/7 high.
>>
>>174372428
That's just how DF generates terrain. You can see it at all levels.
>>

The aquifer tile is an infinite source of water. It will fill up 7/7 to the height of the aquifer tile.

Decided to throw together some graphics for the nine tribal beastman species.

I used the same tile for all the herptiles (lower row).

I also interpreted them quite liberally, so they all have standard human bodies (to be consistent with the other creature graphics).
>>
>>174409739
They're quite hard to identify. Which is which? And how do they compare to elves and goblins?
They all kinda look like "elf-eared humanoid".
>>
>>174410589
I know. I'm actually considering making my creature graphics polychrome at this point.

I have no idea how I should do it, though. Is there any way of doing it without having to copy paste them hundreds of times and then painstakingly assigning them to every thinkable profession in the game?
>>
>>174411819
Layers for profession identifiers, tools, weapons, clothing, other props that you draw and then swap onto rows of the same profession/different race and use colorize to get them all whichever color you pick before exporting the layers together?
>>
>>174412430
I don't want any of that kitsch.

I just want them to have the same colour on their skin and shoes, but differenly coloured robes and caps depending on their profession. The colours will be the CGA counterparts of the 16 vanilla calours.
>>
>>174412584
Color the skin and shoes, leave the rest white. Let the game color it. Check out how levers or beds in phoebus/ironhand/etc are made. Some pixels are colored, while others are grey. The latter get colored according to the material.

I'm not 100% sure how it works though. Experiment a little.

Also this is a perfect application for photoshop/gimp actions:
Find a way to automate it.

And use the standard the community established to assign them to professions (QS standardizer).
A script will create empty image files and text files for you and you just have to insert graphics.

Will the coloured details remain the same? They won't get another colour on top of them and turn into vomit? Don't you need to use AS_IS or whatever it was named to preserve the original colours (except I don't want to use that, because I want the profession colours on the shirts).

I think it's a good fit for your creature graphics to keep them that way.

>I have no desire at all to assign them all manually.
As I said, you don't need to. There are tools to do it entirely automatic.
The only thing you need to do is to draw them, but the more I think about it, the easier it would be.

Anyway, as I said, keeping them monochromatic fits your style, so there's really no need either way.

can somebody tell me how to have fun in adventure mode? people here seem to have so much fun doing it
the only thing that really stuck in my memory was playing as some vampire hunter
I searched for this dude, found him in a tavern, cut his arm off, he fled through the night. I followed the giant trail of blood, but passed out from exhaustion (really gave me that superhuman feeling of the vampire, like im actually hunting this dangerous/superior monster)
searched for him later in his home, then found him again in the tavern and finally killed him.
that was amazing

Things I did after that:
-since the vampire I killed apperantly was the only one in the whole area and I had nothing to do: I became a vampire, killed necromancers with that character, hid necro-book in a temple and retired (since I wanted to be a werebeast for healing)
-toppled statue in the temple to become a werebeast + necromancer. killed a lot of bandit camps and stuff. but without people to talk to i didn't have anything to do. can you find titans and stuff like that on your own (without someone telling you)?... ran amok in a town infecting as many people as I could. died (since it was some shit wererodent)
-next char did some banditkilling and then became werebeast again in the cursed rodent city. transformed&survived transformation, but I didn't have any gear when transforming back... retired and played fortress mode

what do you actually do to have fun? The whole vampire/werebeast thing got old pretty quickly.
What do you do? How do you find titans, hydras and stuff. Searched for one. but it lead me to some abandoned dwarven fortress. I've searched its rooms. nothing in there. found an access to some cavernlike area. searched this. found long straight roads, noticed that I was in some dwarven tunnel system, couldn't find a way out and drowned myself in a pool of water...

The first vampire I killed was the only really successful& interesting thing I did in the game.
>>
>>174433256
Try finding a titan again, of course. Don't get discouraged by failure.
Alternatively, give yourself a goal specific to your world. For example, climb the highest mountain or explore a foreign continent.

Get deeper into the world. Learn about its history, find out about titans that still live, read about their lives. Learn about your own civ - maybe it's controlled by goblins! You could make it your mission to free them.
Talk with people, ask them not only about troubles but their surroundings, who they are, etc.

In short:
>don't get discouraged by failure
>invest time to get to know your world
>things to do will emerge by themselves.

I have fun by finding out what problems the people of the land are facing and trying to solve them.

Or by just simply exploring.
Exploring random areas like dungeons underneath keeps and shit can be extremely fun, especially when you find a criminal to kill.

Making silly characters is fun too, since with skills like the Misc. Object Fighter skill, which allows you to bet the everloving fuck out of people with things like live bugs, teeth, skulls, branches and fucking leaves.
>>
>>174433935
>>174434060
hm... I think another problem for me is that I don't really remember the names of people&places.
Like go to "blabla there is the group blabla"
walk two towns in that direction... forgot where I where I was supposed to go. start stabbing some random bards and poets.
even if I complete some quest... great? this town I cant even remember likes me?
and even if I tell them the rumors about it. people in the area continue to tell me that the bandit group that I killed is a problem...
>>
>>174434584
>I don't really remember the names of people&places.
Make notes. Keep Legends mode open

>even if I complete some quest... great? this town I cant even remember likes me?
That's why I told you to get invested in the world history. If you've read two hours about its history, who that one Titan killed, which fortresses it destroyed, what outcomes of wars it changed, finally killing it is its own reward instead of getting praise from procedurally generated creatures in a computer game.
You don't need to complete quests, you need to set yourself goals. Goals that you achieve for the sake of it. For a personal feeling of accomplishment.

Basically this.

If you make it your goal to conquer and overcome all the evils in a world, then you'll feel more satisfied in defeating these evils that people ask you to kill.

On the other hand, you could always become a tyrant, and conquer a kingdom with your own band of knights.
>>

- get born as adults => instantly lay eggs again => eggs+food+insane reproduction
- insane reproduction + cant be domesticated => constant training required => highly skilled animaltrainers in no time
- insane reproduction + cant be domesticated => let some of them revert back to their wild state as expendable hostiles => endless possibilities!!! (Bait for your GCSs in the silk farm, training your troops, getting your troops accustomed to seeing a lot of corpses, the list goes on...)!
- weak => no danger at all if they revert back to their wild state. one of my crundles tragically got hurt by a cavy boar :(

I've been following the development for the last two years.

It seems good so far, although its scope is different than DF's.

The worlds generated generally look prettier than those in DF. Its cities are really impressive.

The problem is that everything in that game is backdrops for the adventure. The "history" in that game is just a random collection of events with no connection to ach other at all. You can visit graveyards and read tombstones, but the people buried haven't actually lived in the world, and the circumstances of their deaths NEVER correlate to any historical event.

It doesn't hold much to DF, but I'm still pretty hyped about its development. I look forward to the NPC release.

That's what I thought, except my approach would have been more like having your militia best the spirit of the volcano in combat. Either way, natural disasters will feel less arbitrary if they're tied to hostile action rather than impersonal forces.

Export a legends file prior to starting.
But before you resort to searching legends for somebody, try the >Q<uests menu, where you can read about people you've met/heard of and plot directions on a crude version of the map using ">z<oom to this location"
Ask human civilizations for whereabouts. They'll probably tell you to ask Urist McPerson who is more well traveled than they, so then ask for directions to Urist McPerson
Keep a notepad or something handy to jot down important notes. E.g. "I'm a hearthperson for The Skulls of Fucking" "My home hamlet is east of that one big fucking river" "My home hamlet is north of that lagging clusterfuck human town that's right on the coast"
If all else fails consult the legends file (preferably the dfhack-legends-plus xml file) for information about a person's location in the game and then use the >Q<uests menu to find the site they live in

I don't care if you like therapist or not. I don't care if you like maniplator or not. Stop being a catty little bitch about what other people like.
Manipulator has existed for longer than you've played DF. People with access to both have continued to use therapist during the long period when both have been available. It didn't suddenly become "pointless" in the brief period that dfhack was updated but therapist wasn't. People who preferred therapist before will probably continue to prefer therapist. Whining about why you don't like the thing every other time someone in this thread wants to use therapist isn't likely to change that, and lying in the OP (whether it was you or not, IDGAF) is just petty and childish.

>is therapist updated yet?

If dfhack is updated you can get the same easy management via manipulator without using an external program.

Originally therapist was written for windows and carries a legacy of personal preferences governing design choices from chmod.

You get it as a blob or source so it isn't even a case of pulling it apart to tweak things like you can with a script or even a plugin via the .cpp files.

The method used by therapist to hook into df has long been superceded with other ways, manipulator is a native part of dfhack and thus naturally accomodates these.

It's like using the pure google version of android and using some third party supplier version that they've kept hacking together ways to get it working on top of the newest android so you end up with a weird mashup of formats and layouts and a real fucking pain in the ass if you want to change something minor like the fucking ui which should //always// be under control of the user if they desire.

I wasn't the op, but they're right that it's pointless to grab an extra program and do all the shit involved to get it working or wait for it to be updated.

I have no idea if the android version of chrome can be customized properly but it's why I'm using firefox now, fuck having the tabs and address box and whatnot on different bars.

I'm sure when I end up getting a fondleslab for myself I'll end up caring, but until then a smartphone is just a neat little camera to play with.
>>
>>174466663
>I don't care about your preference
>let me tell you more about my preference

Everything you just typed is irrelevant. Therapist is updated. The point of therapist is to use a third party utility (like the other option, dfhack's manipulator) to manage dwarf labors. It still serves that function as well as it ever has, and for most users none of the shit under the hood matters at all. From the standpoint of pure functionality manipulator is at least as pointless, considering that it does the exact same thing with fewer features.
Your preference is irrelevant. Your preference is irrelevant. Your preference is irrelevant. Do I need to say it again?
Lying in the OP is harmful to the general and does nothing but mislead players who don't know any better. I don't know why someone who barely touches fort mode cares so much about it anyway.
>>
>>174467839
I make regular use of manipulator when I pull up testing forts and in the arena while working on mods, and I wasn't talking about any preferences.

My preference is irrelevant, it doesn't matter in any way here, pay attention to what I posted and not the argument you think I'm making:

>dfhack provides hooks and whatnot along with memory addresses for therapist
>dfhack updates before therapist
>if for whatever reason you really love using therapist, great, cool, knock yourself out
>if you're not playing your fort because you can't bear the thought of going through the vpl shuffle all over again, I get it
>if dfhack is updated you can use something that accomplishes the same thing as therapist does until therapist gets around to updating
>>
>>174461592
When is dfhack-therapist gonna get sorting by Squads, and easily grabbing multiple dwarves at once and smacking them in said squads?
That's the only reason why I ever turn on therapist, to quickly assemble 20 dorf military and dump all other (non hunter/miner/woodcutter) dwarf into militia so they can walk around in leather armor and a weapon, but not train.

Turns a 10min job of figuring out who is who into 30sec of mass selecting and done.

That's what I did. You're shifting your argument now.

>If dfhack is updated you can get the same easy management via manipulator without using an external program.
>Which I prefer for reasons, and also dfhack isn't an external program, for reasons.

>Originally therapist was written for windows and carries a legacy of personal preferences governing design choices from chmod.
>Which is bad because reasons.

>You get it as a blob or source so it isn't even a case of pulling it apart to tweak things like you can with a script or even a plugin via the .cpp files.
>And I don't like this, for reasons.

>It's like using the pure google version of....
>A nonsequitur analogy just to keep you on your toes.

>but they're right that it's pointless to grab an extra program and do all the shit involved to get it working or wait for it to be updated
>Is my opinion about how you should play. Do this for dfhack, but not for therapist, because reasons.

It's nice of you to shift to a magnanimous tone and acknowledge that people can play how they choose to. And pretending that your preference is purely technical is a nice touch to try to appear reasonable on the subject. But I've seen you rant about the aesthetics of sideways text and the anathema of having a labor manager in separate window so many times that I'm not fooled.
And this conversation began with your defense of the OP deliberately misleading people. Can you at least step back from the discussion for a moment, think about this as objectively as you can, and agree that the OP should not be deliberately misleading?
>>
if you start as a human outsider can you craft clothes/weapons or do you need to find them?
>>
>>174474064
You have to find them. Currently the only things you can craft are bone crafts, stone axes, and some carpentry shop things. Not sure if the latter includes armor or not. There are mods that expand adv mode crafting, but I've never used them and don't know much about them. I think one of the more popular ones is called wanderer's friend, or something like that?
>>
>>174471885

Obviously the net quality of the posts in a general determines the quality of the general itself. Just like on an entire board, or the entire site.

Besides, despite all the shitposting on other boards, shitposting is pretty much universally shunned on 4chan, even among the people who do it. The only people who make unironical arguments in FAVOUR of it are newcomers who see 4chan as "that cool and edgy place where the cool kidz shitpost all day". Incidentally, this is an attitute that has largely lowered the quality of the site.

Also, on almost every non-general board, having a long as fuck reply chain only consisting of reaction pics and "random" meme bullshit is a safe way to get the thread 404'd.
>>
>>174507845
Tiles have a "front light" color that is multiplied against whatever was there, so on a red light white turns red, yellow turns orange, and black turns... black
Then there's the back light, which shows through alpha, like with engravings, barrels and cages, so you'd have to block the back light with black, which lets you have round barrels, or non-highlighted engravings

Here's the thing though: Tracks and wooden doors use the wall sprites' inverse (black front light, colored back light), so you can't just block ALL the backlight.
>>
>>174508154

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Color

And the tileset repository should have a few examples:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository
Usually the black is only around or inside the two "wall lines", but you apparently want it on both sides.
If the tileset you use is a png with alpha transparency, the easiest way would be to open it up in Photoshop or GIMP, put a new layer below, and fill it with black around the wall tiles.

Make sure to save it as proper png with alpha transparency again.

>>
>>174511257

Did he starve for a long time before you started eating?

If yes, you'll have to eat a bit, then wait a bit, then eat again.

Also, remember that your stomach becomes empty everytime you fast travel, so that's a great way to eat a lot in a short time.
>>
>>174511384
If you press T you get into the Travel screen, from there you can press Q for "Logs".

>>174511384
You can open the Q menu in-game, too.

It hasn't really been a quest log since 0.34.

Now, it's more like an in-game encyclopedia, where you can see rumours, formal agreements you've made (i.e. quests from your superiors, companion agreements, etc), a bestiary of all creatures you've seen, and a list of characters you've spoken to. There's also a list of sites you know about.
>>
whats the best way to tell people that you killed bandits. do you literally have to tell them about every single with the rumor system
>>
>>174511835
I didn't really know what I was doing when I started and I wandered away from the town I started in. I found a massive city but they want me to kill dragons and shit.

I'm in over my head I want to got back to the village and choke petty bandits is there any way to find my way back?
>>
>>174511872
Thankfully, the rumour system now keeps track of entire battles, so you can tell them about several kills at the same time.

Apart from that, yes, you have to tell them the rumours. It's a bit clunky. I hope Toady adds the ability to search for names in the rumour screen.
>>
I don't like the way there's a 1-second delay between pressing the key and my adventure mode guy moving, on a machine that runs any new game just fine. ;_;

I'm just a man I don't have the patience of a saint.
>>
>>174512398
That only happens in sites with large populations.
>>
Is there any way to look around the world map in adventure mode and see the village names so I can find out where the fuck I'm supposed to go?

>>
>>174512938
Look at the entity tab.

When you start, there's supposed to be two entities there, namely your civilization, as well as the group that runs your hometown.

The latter should have a link to the site.
>>
>>174513940
Was this added in the latest version? I'm not lazy newb pack and googling for dwarf fortress adventure mode entity only brings up results for an entity token
>>
>>174514367
ON* lazy newb pack
>>
>>174514367
Entities have always been a thing.

The two main types are civilisations and groups.

The former is created at the beginning of history, and their number remains constant (some of them can die out, but it's always possible to revive them).

The latter are created all the time. They can be local governments in sites, they can be bandits, they can be nomadic bands (which behave exactly like bandits), they can be political dissidents living underground, they can be refugees from sacked sites, and so on.

You don't need a tower. Make a one tile finished goods stockpile away from your fort that holds only your most valuable trinket artifact. Surround it with cage traps 4 or 5 deep, and a ring of weapon traps in the center just in case. Put a roof over the whole thing (you only need one wall to hold the roof up) and you have a perfect antikea trap. If you have kobolds you need to get a little more complex, but the principle can work as a kobold deterrent as well.

I notice you're missing out the most important part where one of you bitches got hostile and lost his temper first.

Some wanker got sand in his vagina over me asking about the character name discrepancy and I responded in kind.

It's really cute how you circle the wagons and protect the little dumbass but you're in the wrong here. What would toady think of you stupid bitches and your s3krit klub faggotry?
>>
>>174526338
I think the first mistake you did was asking your questions as if you where complaining about the game and that the game owed you somehow to be intuitive and newby friendly. We get a some of those "lul rimworld is way better than dis shit"-fags in here so we tend to get somewhat protective about the game when it comes to criticism from the outside.
You also made a lot of posts. If a thread is slow, it is slow. This isn't necessarily bad Posting a lot only let's you look like an attention whore.
Yea and in the end you started insulting people. This isn't /b/, so please act accordingly.
>>
>>174527385
>Yea and in the end you started insulting people. This isn't /b/, so please act accordingly.

Actually you guys started it. It's awfully convenient how you forget that. Over an obscure in-game language discrepancy of all things.
>>
>>174527007
Yeah, I miss his art.

>>174527273
>you guys started it
First post in the bitchfest: >>174520159
>Why does the game shwo the wrong fuckign character name in the bottom left corner?
Perhaps you thought that came across as "huh, why do people call me x but the game says y on the bottom left?" but it didn't.

Dude here was a bit passive aggressive: >>174520537

Then you go full on bitchmode: >>174520740
>>
>>174527769
>one of you guys called me entitled
>it's okay to go into autistic rage mode
Are you literally 15?
>>
>>174527792
Passive aggressive is just pussy little bitch mode for actually aggressive.

When the game is still in development and has a lot of bugs and it seems to be referring to your character by two completely different names it's perfectly reasonable question.

There's no reason whatsoever to be a fucking fag over such an obvious inquiry.
>>
>>174528098
Agreed about the passive aggressive stuff, it's why I have said several times, hey faggot, you're being a faggot by calling everyone a faggot and getting spittle everywhere, cut it out.

The question was reasonable, the way it was asked needed work.
>>
>>174528446
No the way it was asked was perfectly normal where do you think you are? The response was by someone who wanted to rock the boat. when someone responded to him in kind you back him up like a bunch of brainless thugs.

Why are Mommy and Daddy fighting?
>>
>>174528898
Because the name you give your character in the creation screen is sometimes different to the one in the corner of the adventure mode screen and if you ask about that in dfg/ some people take offense to it apparently.
>>
>>174529078
Now that I think of it, are you the statues guy we had some threads ago?
You share the same perpetual victim mentality and the low quality of posts.
>>
>>174529240
I'm going to say yes because I'm curious what kind of reaction you would have. Considering the reaction you have to normal questions, this might be good.
>>
>>174528883
>fuckin' saved as OOOOOH.jpg
>>
>>174529452
The reaction is probably going to be a dejected sigh.
>>
>>174529452
Well, I only asked in the first place to survey your reaction, but that doesn't matter.
What are we even arguing about here?
What is your endgame? Do you want an apology?
Do you want an explanation of the game mechanics?

just found out how amazing adventure mode can be
This area i spawned in is completely infested with night trolls (the things that abduct and rape people to reproduce) and its a standard world, I didn't change any parameters or anything.
I'm doing nothing but hunting them (searching a final solution for the night troll problem). Already killed 4+1groom. had to ran from one (my nemesis). basically every *on the map in this area seems to be a night troll

can't wait to look in the legends, finding out how they are related. I'm probably wiping out a dynasty that terrorised this region for centuries

Is it possible to kill so much shit that your character ends up in the Legends?

Wiki doesn't mention it, so it doesn't seem plausible. Just something that crossed my mind.

Or try playing vanilla
>>
>>174532784
Aim the grab, don't do anything yet, aim the jump and it will commit the grab, confirm the jump and it will let you aim another grab, this prevents them trying to dodge if you grabbed their weapon at first.
>>
>>174533335

Leave DFhack to the Inteligent dwarf fortress players. Thanks!

Worry not, I've played this game for a long time, but that entire time was basicly just running around killing small things and learning the controllers and such.

This time I feel like I can play the game and fuck around with it on equal terms.

The wiki said that creatures with tearing to the lower spine are never going to be able to walk again. Does this count for bad ass hammer dwarf companions as well?
If it doesn't heal, can I become a werebeast and softly bite her to make her walk again?
