It is, but I was thinking that Chara being 2A and Frisk being 2B is someone good.

The prototype thing is similar to how Chara was the first fallen, and 2B giving 2A her pod and weapon is something like Frisk letting Chara take over during genocide.

Asriel being 9S is decent because it shows something of a transformation from Asriel to Flowey after more and more bad shit happens to him. Plus the ending where 9S kills 2A would be kinda poetic for Undertale with the character swap.

The results of a grind is usually satisfying in most games, therefore it makes sense to keep that, the route shouldn't be unsatisfying, it's just supposed to make you feel like shit, because you're not killing Monster A colors red > blue > green etc, but thinking-feeling creatures you can emphatize with.

And the pointlessness still gets through, because the world is destroyed, the exit is locked, there's no way anywhere but to start again.

She also canonically bullies Asriel with her actions, and laughs it off - but with her comments on the Heart Locket, the love she had for him was real? (but then murders him cold near the end of Genocide)

The very end of Genocide has Chara going full God complex on Frisk, with none of the naivety Asriel had.

One anon told me it was better off to think of her as mentally ill, but I wouldn't know. I really don't know what to make of Chara.

Chara wasn't the best person, hated humanity, laughs everything off, and was very manipulative of Asriel. But. They and he were still "Best Friends" and did everything together. But... when their plan was in action, Asriel refused to fight, despite Chara urging him to, and they both were killed instead.

When Chara is reawakened through Frisk's fall into the Underground, their last memory is being betrayed by Asriel in such a way that they'd think for an absolute fact that Mercy gets you nowhere, and that fighting is the answer. It's also possible that Asriel's "betrayal" ruined monsterkind for them.

At the end of the Genocide route, Chara has a god complex because all of that "Power" that they were getting went straight to their head and they had way to much fun killing everyone and 'controlling' you, whether you realized you were a puppet or not. You did exactly what they wanted you to do. The Genocide Route also has them at their absolute worst. The idea that Asriel 'betrayed' them and that it IS Kill or Be Killed is reinforced and strengthened as an absolute fact, so in the end they are extremely mad at Asriel for that, hence why they brutally murder him. The True Pacifist route has Frisk's merciful and kind actions showing Chara a better way and proving that Asriel was right to spare the humans all along, and so they grow more hopeful and stuff as a narrator instead of being the crazy little voice in your head urging you to kill ALL the things.

To be fair, their last memories are of betrayal for a cause they totally believed in, and by the person they trusted the most. If you look at popular folklore of ghosts and stuff, these kind of negative feeling exacerbate after death, so even if Chara's not immediately homicidal upon waking up, they'd likely be very distrustful, perhaps aggressively so.

The way that the game is set up, you start out knowing the name "Chara" and the appearance of a ambiguously raced and gendered human child with a pink-striped blue shirt and shorts. You never learn Frisk's name unless you go through the route where you spare everyone, NEVER fight, befriend everyone, etc. And you never learn Chara's appearance unless you go through the route where you kill everyone, always fight, and are feared by everyone. Otherwise, the Human is a neutral entity inbetween these two identities.

Thus, when you take this and what Asriel-Flowey says, the game seems to indicate that "Frisk" is the good one and "Chara" is the bad one.

a lot of the narration on neutral/pacifist is more than merely descriptive but but in itself doesn't really indicate anything, especially considering the game has its roots in earthbound, which loved to do the same sort of thing

it's only in Genocide where the tone and intent of the narration changes sharply, which makes the whole experience more unnerving

A lot of fanworks and comic have a saved Asriel or Floweypot end up hating Asgore because the people who made them hate Asgore and or ship Soriel and want Sans to be his new dad but theres nothing in the actual game to really suggest that he doesn't like him and he still asks Frisk to look after both his mom and dad at the end of the game.

The whole " you didn't do that" thing isn't even the weirdest thing to happen to the narration in the true lab. In fact, if Chara is the narrator, then a lot of the stuff in the true lab suggests that their mind is being massively fucked with and then the narrative just brushes it off like it was nothing.

That's not good characterisation or development.

Whenever I think about plans on continuing the story of Undertale, my first thought is dealing with all the stuff around Gaster, the Gaster Followers, Goner Kid, Sans' issues and what Papyrus' involvement in it all in, and then fixing and resolving the brokenness of the Dreemurr family and reviving the 6 humans as actual characters, restoring Asriel for good, etc. But when I think about potential stories for the others, like Undyne and Alphys, the Blooks, etc, I'm at a loss.

Flowey is a badly warped snapshot of Asriel's feelings at the moment of his death - he died alone after over-estimating the goodness of others, and when he was reborn without his compassion he doubled down hard on Chara's more violent and antisocial views (whatever else you think about Chara, it's established that they hated humans and tried to engineer events so that Asriel would wind up killing the inhabitants of their village)

Asriel is a very compassionate, empathic kind of character. Chara's body had to be carried across the barrier because that was the cover story for Asriel absorbing their soul in the first place. Asriel mentions Chara picking up their own dead body to emphasize that Chara now had partial control.

On headcanon, I don't think Chara brought the body to incite humans into attacking them. Chara probably wanted to ditch the body because it's a pain, but Asriel refused to toss Chara away like that. I say this because Chara's corpse was carried all the way back up the mountain by someone so injured they were ready to turn to dust at any moment. If survival was what mattered, they would have ditched the body lighten the load. It's clear the reason the body was carried in spite of that was because someone cared about Chara very, very much.

The way Asriel talks about Chara's hatred of humanity, in the context of them wanting to attack the villagepeople, it paints a very specific picture of Chara in my head, and it isn't a very flattering one. All the different details Asriel gives seem to support his assertion that Chara wasn't a very good person.

Don't misunderstand. Chara's plan was to murder the shit out of several, if not all, humans. In fact, it's my belief Chara had no idea he was going to survive death, and he was relying on his martyrdom to spur Asriel to kill at least six in his hometown after his passing.

What I disagree with is that Chara was using the body to manipulate Asriel to fight in self-defense. Even if they did know they would be alive after death, I figure they'd just wait for a human to be "obviously evil" and use that as proof for Asriel to kill them. The fact that the corpse spurred an act of self-defense was a happy accident.

Toby didn't put much thought into Chara despite them having fairly major influence on the world.
He wrote them in an inconsistent manner, it feels like he wrote them in whenever he had a somewhat interesting idea for them.
The headcanons we have are attempts to reconcile the information we are given
Strangely enough, the other character who is majority headcanons, W.D. Gaster, does not really suffer from this issue as the majority of the evidence for him was added altogether, near the end of Undertale's development.
