If you want to melee with Octopodes, then Dithmenos is by far the best choice.
Dith will easily allow you to tab through most of the game until you manage to find Statue Form. Then you switch for Mak and proceed to tab against everything.
I just prefer starting as a fighter for the shield, it helps a lot during the early game. Of course you can just find one, but then you are at the mercy of rng when you are at your weakest.
Anyways, just worship Dith and proceed to stab everything and anything.
It's rather simple really, with the ridiculous stealth boost and enemy accuracy penalty, you just have to tab and not get surrounded.
I have perfected the melee Octopode formula so if you have any questions just ask
>>
>>174157851
Do you go for 15 runes? Why shields?
>>
>>174157851
Also, do you switch to UC, or keep on stabbing? Dagger or rapier/quick blade?

>Do you go for 15 runes?
Yes. However, by that point I also spam Tornado and other spells to easily clear whatever extended trash there is. Tornado kinda trivializes about everything.
Because 'podes have average aptitudes in almost everything but stealth, raising skills is pretty easy, especially when you only need about 10-12 shortblades, ~10-15 Shield, high stealth but you have +4, ~10 Fighting, 12~ Dodging rest goes into spells.
You'll remain mostly melee/stabber until you find Statue Form, then you train Spellcasting/Transmutation/Earth to get it castable.
Be sure to learn Repel/Deflect Missiles. Regeneration is nice too.
Once you get SF castable, I recommend switching to Mak, as hp on kills is amazing and will let you easily complete ziggs and 15 runes. Dith's wrath is doable, the only dangerous part is Tzitzimitls (shadow fiends), so be sure to kill those fast by punching them in SF or just teleporting away.

After the basics, start dumping everything into Air magic if you find Tornado, or into Evocations for Disc of Storms.
This is to prepare you for Ziggurats if you want to find amazing rings to complete your collection. Fo ziggs you also want Necromutation, however just Mak and Tornado with SF is enough to clear the first zigg, hopefully you'll find the necronomicon there if you haven't found it before.

>Why shields?
Because Octopodes have trash defenses until Statue Form and just EV doesn't cut it, the shield adds another layer of defense which helps a lot during most of the game.
Between the shield and the Dith accuracy penalty you'll only take a few hits from the few enemies that avoid your stabs of doom, provided you don't let yourself get surrounded of course.

>>174158515
Depends on what you find. Any shortblade of venom/draining is a great find and will support you through most of 3 runes.
After you get SF castable, you can train UC and switch to unarmed combat when stealth fails if you wish.

I've had it drop in about 2 of my 12ish endgame scenarios, both by Sauron. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me can pull the percentage out of their butts, but it's probably 1/6 or something chance to drop from him.

And if you really like to scum, Smeagol drops it 1/666 of the time!
>>
>>174143814
rather than rings of power being more common than vanilla angband, it's just that PCB characters spend 10x as much time grindan' so they're more likely to see one

hell it's relatively common for highish xp-modifier races like HE to win before hitting level 50, and their 190% is LOWER than most of the popular PCB races
>>

How much bullshit happens on a 666 chance in pcb?

if you roll 666 on a 1d888, death ray will instantly kill uniques

Oh yeah? Did it have permacurse as well? that property is about as rare as vamp is.
>>
Is it better for a GrFi or GrGl early game to have lighter armor and let his natural AC make up for it? Or is it better to wear that plate mail and get really high AC but worse accuracy/speed (unless that's not how it works, really new to this game)
>>
Do you only get brands after you kill uniques or can normal monsters give you brands as well?

Because 1/666 seems exceedingly rare, considering there's less than 300 uniques even in PCB-R
>>
>>174167453
do whatever gives you the highest ac+ev combined

new players sometimes fall into the dumb trap of thinking they should either train dodging OR armour and ignore the other one entirely, but because of the way crawl skills increase in cost as they get higher level, it's much more effective to split your xp between two or three defensive skills rather than focusing on one
>>
>>174167390
permacurse is much much much rarer than vamp you dingus
>>
Also, remind me how a runesword works again
Is there a help file I can read about it

I remember it goes something like: If you kill monsters with higher level than the enchantment combined, plus the weapon's dice

So if I were to fight a horde of unmakers which are around level 80, I couldn't get a sword that's higher than 10d10 +30 +30

But brands only work when you kill a unique I think, but does it work against all uniques?

Can I get *sharpness* out of a lucky grip or farmer maggot kill?
Is the brand-acquisition tied to the level of the unique too?
>>
>>174167568
actually it's rarer than that

you kill a unique and it compares 1d150 to the unique's level. if the monster level is higher, it ATTEMPTS to gain a brand
it picks a random brand from the list of possible ones and then it only has a chance to actually gain it (otherwise it gets no brand): the chance is as high as 1/6 for things like acelfico and as low as 1/666 for *sharp*
>>
>>174167773
thank you, and raise STR right? To minimize armor penalties?
>>
>>174167974
So what you're saying is that there's a 1 in 3 chance of getting *sharpness* on a rune sword
>>
>>174167453
AC is way better than EV early game, although gargs already have good innate ac that makes up for it.
You should wear whatever you find that comes with a good enchantment provided it's not a fucking robe or animal skin.
So long as your AC is 20-30 you can easily do D1-15 and Lair, that AC is pretty easy to achieve with gargs.
Also note that you don't need a stupid high EV to actually dodge a lot of shit
Even around 15 will already have you dodge lots of ranged stuff
Once again, try to wear whatever armor you find that comes with a good enchantment, I'd rather use scrolls of enchant armor on gloves, boots, helmet, cloak first.
Ring mail, scale mail, chain mail are all fine.
Plate if it's a really good one. If you find a Crystal Plate there's no point in using it early unless it's highly enchanted.
Note that Dragon armor tends to have a lower EV/casting penalty.
If you want to have amazing gear just worship Gozag.

>>174168018
You don't need much STR unless wearing plate or crystal plate.
If you start as a fighter, the starting STR is more than enough, it's better to spend points in DEX as it has a nice synergy with EV and as I said even ~15-20 EV is already pretty nice
>>
>>174167968
enchantment and dice are considered separately

tohit + todam + 15 is capped at (monster level)
damage dice * damage sides is capped at (monster level) as well
>>
>>174157387
Played some DCSS back when, been playing DoomRL lately, this genre seems interesting but I really can't stomach non-tiles (hopefully for now, maybe I'll grow to like them) - any roguelikes with tiles anyone can recommend? Most of the entry level ones in the bin are non-tiles.
>>

games with tiles are not real roguelikes

Can Weaponsmiths improve runeswords?
>>
>>174168586
Games without them aren't real roguelikes either.
Unless you can name a single non-modal ASCII game.
>>
>>174168870
weaponsmiths should be able to add 1 property to anything that isn't an artifact
they can't smith things that are currently equipped though so you'd have to add what you want BEFORE equipping the permacursed sword

But farming unmakers in arena 79 really is a good idea since they're trash and they can't eat through permawalls, so you just get them in a 1x1 corridor and conga them and they give out a shitton of xp and good items too.

Also since they're level 77 they look like perfect targets for rune sword beefing!

Their only ranged offense is breathing chaos for 60 damage (just get Rchaos)
They melee to disenchant, so just get Rdisenchant
These guys are chums

But it might be a problem since they destroy everything they land on so you could only farm artifacts out of them

Would you look at that, the unmaker is a level 77 breeder. The only other breeder that's over level 40 is the greater wall monster. Again, nonliving.

>you don't have enough xp to go "lol just get uc then start learning air magic"
You don't have to skill UC to 27. Mid 10s is more than enough to clear 3 rune trash that you fail to stab. Also Octo air aptitude is average which means it increases pretty fast, not to mention rings of int, wizardry to help the casting/no armor penalty at all
And fuck, SF with even a fucking dagger will clear 3 rune trash with little to no worry assuming Mak.
Besides, Tornado is far more useful than punching.
And xp is literally free on ziggurats which you're bound to do as an Octopode to get bling, with Tornado demolishing everything there
What I do is just get a bit of UC then start with Air for Tornado since I always do ziggs before Zot/extended

Also I had no idea you could find fucking randarts on D1
>>

Not really, anon.
As I said getting UC to like 15 is very fast on an Octopode. You can just dump everything on Air magic and have Tornado ready for Zot/zigg/extended easily, sometimes even Depth depending on rings.
The reason I save Zot for last is because I can't be bothered to get mutated by the eventual orb of fire you don't stab, sometimes if I have enough cure mut pots I clear Zot besides the last floor and then zigg > extended.
I get that you'd be one shotting draconians with 27 UC but you also destroy them all at once with Tornado. which also has the advantage of letting you basically destroy anything in the game besides uh... Eresh when she uses silence. And the amazing synergy it has with Mak.

If you explore cautiously instead of auto for some of D3,4,5~ until you have enough weapon skill/hp to tab most shit away
I started as naga fighter with axes and just tabbed through most shit, D1&2 is cake
Nagas have average weapon aptitude so it increases pretty fast.

To get good at ToME is basically to get good at kiting and gear management. Don't take bad fights, if you're melee always exchange attacks with an enemy that's under a big damage debuff (stun) or while you're under a big defensive buff. Use healing, escapes, or status removal when the opponent uses the same thing against you. Actually utilize charms (Psychoportation for example) and be aware of the map (Tracking). Actually pay attention to what elemental resists those random shitty equipment pieces give. If you have no ranged options whatsoever, learn Shoot and have a backup ranged weapon (preferably one with a big slow on hit or other things that can slow the enemy's approach and debuff them for melee fighting). Always have an escape option (preferably two) available for when things go sour, never be in the situation where you're stunned and your cleanse physical is cooling down and you have no way to disengage.

If you play higher difficulties, map awareness (Tracking, Heightened senses, and other equivalents) are a big deal so you don't stumble into something that can destroy you. Some things also scale badly as well, damage shaving (anti-magic shield) becomes worse the stronger your enemies are while damage negation (bone shield) becomes better.

In general, actual DPT checks are very rare in the game, so the harder it becomes the less important it becomes to kill things quickly and the more important it becomes to make sure you will survive no matter what.

>>174199376
You don't even need to grind in PCB, the experience comes by itself. It's killing enough uniques to make the Serpent doable that's the line you absolutely must cross to succeed. There are too many lategame PCB uniques, and they don't show up frequently enough.

>Adds a new Level 7 Charms spell: Overwhelming Strike. This spell, when cast, gives the player the Strike status for a hort period of time. If the player successfully hits an enemy while nder the Strike status, a powerful strike will be performed on the enemy based on spellpower and the player's current remaining MP at the time of the strike. After the strike is performed, the player's MP is drained to 0 and the Strike status is removed.

how about a level 9 charms/hexes spells called buffsucker
steals all buffs from enemies in LoS and applies them to yourself
redundant buffs increase duration of effect

charms school could use some spells that aren't simple buffs but i don't what
maybe there's some good monster only spells but I can't think of them right now
maybe like that orc/seraph battlecry that rouses your allies or whatever
or some shit from pan demonspawn
berserk other could be good, but it might work as a hex too. i guess that might be filled by discord already idk
might other exists on troll shamans
maybe a spell that boosts your strength or dex based on spellpower, i mean if stats even mattered in the first place. maybe have the spell decrease one of the other two stats so it's not a "nobrainer"
add sustained reactive auras; add kickback to them so it's not a "nobrainer"
add a spell that increases LoS
add a spell that extends duration of temporary buffs; make it decrease MR or extend debuff duration so it's not a "nobrainer"

hexes school could be fixed by allowing monster-only spells to be learned by the player, like -tele + strip resistance from enchantress, vault warden door locking, vault sentinel marking + noise projection, yred pain mirror/damage reflection, magic sap from pan demonspawn, and other cool shit I can't remember
mainly shit that doesn't depend on the fucking infinite MR that all monsters after lair have
all or nothing dice rolls are the cancer killing hexes

it has cute graphics and zany jokes, the magic schools are pretty fun

but it has some bad interface issues, namely:
-designed to be mouse-first. You can walk around with keyboard instead of mouseclicks but doing so will walk you into shit like traps while using mouse will stop you from walking into traps.
-Really bad inventory management. You have to constantly drag and drop shit around, it's like a much worse version of Diablo (not a roguelike but inspired by them) inventory management. This is especially a big pain in the ass for crafting.

So it's got some upsides but some annoying downsides too. The art, humor, and magic varieties are its high points for me, but the mouse-first control scheme and design of inventory management are problems.

In Poschengband, what Demigod subraecs are particularly good for melee-focused peeps (such as Rune-Knight or Weaponmaster)?

>>
>>174241248

Zeus is probably the most useful in the midgame grind for most everyone (since you don't have to worry about levitation and MAX STATS asap). Poseidon is pretty nifty if you get a lot of hits, and is more interesting than Ares imho. Hades gives *really* useful implicits.
>>
>>174241248
weaponmasters are really good at using ego equipment, rune knights are really good at using both egos and artifacts

like a weaponmaster could take some helm of the valkyrie and pump it up to +6 pval and give it rDisenchant, while a rune knight could slap a rune of air on Deathwrecker for extra blows

overall rune knights are more fun, but they also make irrevocable decisions since you can never take a rune off of an item, while a weaponmaster can keep tweaking as they please

Pretty much any demigod type can work fine. Ares gives the most melee bonuses and his helm drop gives extra blows but has no resists and aggravates. Hermes gives speed as you level and not being able to be slowed is very strong, plus his boots are superb. Poseidon is always fine on melee classes since reducing enemy armor on hit is good. His trident is fine but it has Order property which means it always does the same damage and cannot crit. Zeus' amulet gives +5 device skill (used to also give +5 device power which was nuts, rip nerf but it's still strong).

You don't really want the caster parentages since you won't reliably be casting without consistent mana.
>>
>>174242420

>>
>>174244569
it's a pcb item that starts at 0d0 (-50, -50) and vampirism (drains life on hit to heal you) but as you kill things it gets semirandomly stronger and gains various abilities. It's also permanently cursed so you can never remove it unless you use a scroll of mundanity to nuke all of its abilities (including the permacurse) away.

It can be better or worse than this but usually ends up as something like 7d6 (+25, +25) with, say, branded with frost, slays giants, undead, orcs. Slay just means extra damage.
>>
>>174244569

You also have to kill *stronger* things for it to increase in power, so you can't just farm worms forever.

To say it is a grind to get working is an understatement. It took me almost an entire day of playing just to get it to positive values, although once you get into the (0, 0) it really takes off. It can technically go up to (+50, +50), but realistically it will be about (+30, +30)

Mathematically it is pretty fucking strong, but the issue is that it takes *forever* of tedious grind to work (more from the fact that the god damn sword needs to *kill* to get exp, so you can't Dual Wield cheese it). Plus, some of the top-end artifacts are superb and have a pletora of very useful implicts you would miss out on.

Compare:

>7d6 (+30, +30)
>Fire Brand
>slay giant, undead, orc

vs Ringil:

>5d5 (+22,+25)
>+5 to CHR, Speed(!)
>Frost

I don't know, what should I write exactly. And I don't know anything about dependencies between current player's level and "dangerousness" of the specific monster.

there are a LOT of viable orders but here's a common one:
thieves quest, warg quest, finish stronghold if you're a weak character may have to hold off on final boss until later though), go to morivant and open up Orc Caves on the way, do the first two quest floors in the Angband dungeon, clear Orc Caves, Morivant's Tengu and Death Swords quest (and maybe a couple others like Sewer), Labyrinth, Lonely Mountain (may have to hold off on killing Smaug though).

As for saving throws, IIRC, usual saving throw is defined as following macro:

#define saving_throw(S) (randint0(100) < S)

So basically if the random value from 0 to 99 is less than S ( character's saving throw - power of spell ), it evaluates as true, meaning that player succeeded in saving throw.
So 15 is bit sizeable. Can't remember off-hand, but usually spell power is just the level of the monster.

>>174259042
Eh, I don't think Rune Knights actually work well with two weapons. Their skill caps on expert, which isn't that bad...
For all it's worth, the effectiviness of dual-wielding is calculated as follows:

pct = 650 * ( dualwielding_skill / dualwielding_skill_max )
if( p_ptr->easy_2hand ) pct += 100;
if( p_ptr->genji ) pct += 150;
if( mut_present ( MUT_AMBIDEXTRITY ) ) pct += 100;

And +50 if the off-hand weapon is wazikashi or main gauche.

Long story short, the penalty to hit is normal_chance * (pct / 1000).
Plus there are some damage/accuracy-penalties involved.

I mean, you can make it work, especially if you find source of genji.

they are definitely better at sword and board but you can go for ambi if you are set on dual wielding. Certainly playable.

Fleet of Foot is INSANELY overpowered though. Less obvious quality of life as compared with grasp because it's hard to have a direct sense of speed, but getting sprigganmove is OP for fighting anything lategame, doubly so as a melee character.
>>
>>174260061
DGrasp is really good and helps avoid "fuck fuck my healing staff is out, time to chug !heal or read ?Tele" but IMO Fleet of Foot is considerably stronger. Remember !RestoreMana refills all devices too, so in the final fight and whatnot grasp is not as critical (you'll also bring all your potions and be happy to use them) while fleet still does a ton of work.

Lets you close with dangerous casters MUCH more safely, lets you run away or otherwise position yourself much more safely, reduces the chances of multiple monsters acting in between your two turns (if it was a walking turn) so you can get disentangle yourself from say being surrounded by Starspawns of Cthulhu

it's in some ways like a dimension door that takes less than a regular turn instead of more than a full turn
>>
>>174260973
Fleet of Foot is pretty sick for farming Athena maguses too, since you move fast enough to bonk them up-close.
>>
>>174261672
yeah it's at its most impactful against heavy casters, which are the most dangerous enemies in the game

You know, the sad thing is that I really feel for this particular troglodyte. He probably had to kill some spiders in the lair spider entrance vault, and jump down expecting some free ogres of exp. Instead he gets the absolutely worst layout, makes a fuckton of noise and a SUPER shitty situation in under 10 turns. That particular entrance is absolutely awful if you don't know to immediately dig a killhole, or alternatively have a bunch of stealth.

This might not be the best place to ask since it's not really rogue-related, but does anyone know of any games like these that are more survival oriented than classic dungeoneering type stuff? Something more open-ended where the idea is just to survive and carve out a home for yourself, rather than get to the bottom of the dungeon and grab them fat loots.

I tried playing c:dda and it was pretty neat, it didn't seem like staying in one place and trying to build it up into some kind of fortress was too viable, though. I'm checking out unReal now, I've tried Elona before and it's not really my thing. I like building stuff more than I like murdering stuff, basically.

Every mod you might find for Minecraft has a point where it just goes 'okay, now go down into a mine and dig for seven hours until you find enough of [super rare material x]' and it's really frustrating because staring at grey stone blocks for hours on end is by far the dullest part of an already dull game.

Can someone give me the run down for melee dudes?

I've been told pump dex, and I've been told dex is overrated and to pump str. I'm playing a GrFi, and I'd like to know how it all works accuracy etc. I get that when you hit mindelay you swing as fast as possible with your weapon, but what effects accuracy?

1. How does accuracy work? does having a shield/plate armor effect it? Do I need to dump STR or DEX to increase it?

2.Do I need to go into dex to make up for Gr's crappy EV? or STR to deduct the penalties for heavy armor/shields?
>>
>>174273401
A quick rundown, perhaps?
>>
>>174274150
I kinda got it figured out, I realized I shouldn't be using the wiki for the latest trunk-updates. I guess STR is now better to dump for any armor based character
>>
>>174273401
Melee damage is like 3/4 str and 1/4 dex more or less, accuracy is your roll from base acc on weapon v enemy evasion + some other factors like your ec rate and shield penalty and stuff like that i believe
Getting dex on Gr isnt that great since their base dex is shit and training dodge is so slow because lmao -2 dodging
>>
>>174274628
>Melee damage is like 3/4 str and 1/4 dex more or less,

not since 0.18
>>
>>174273401
>>174274628
Lies
DEX is usually great for a lot of backgrounds, fighter already starts with enough STR to use most armors effectively including plate
DEX has amazing sinergy with Dodging and even with -2 apt getting to 12~ isn't that hard and means a lot more points from dex
Also note that EV doesn't need to be much high to actually avoid a lot of things, 15-20 is pretty good
Not to mention gargs have great innate ac meaning you don't need to wear the heaviest armors, so it leaves you with more EV
>>
>>174273401

Weapons have the shittiest damage so pumping Str is the way to go. Just ignore accuracy, it doesn't matter.
>>
>>174274478
Yeah, I'd raise strength if you are planning to wear plate or heavier.
>>
>>174274737
WHAT? Stupid

>>174274993
You get that much ev as GrFi without boosting dex anyway
>>
>>174273401
1. http://crawl.chaosforge.org/To-hit

In a nutshell,
positive effects on accuracy:
+ dexterity
+ fighting skill
+ weapon skill
+ weapon enchantment and slaying bonuses (effectively the same thing in modern versions of Crawl)
+ Corona
+ weapon's base accuracy for "light" weapons

negative effects:
- shield penalty (can be removed entirely with high Shield skill)
- armour penalty (if the armour has high enough encumbrance, can't be removed; strength and armour skill help decrease it)
- Umbra which you can't see through (only really relevant to Profane Servitors)
- Enemy invisibility; you get lower accuracy if you're invisible but don't have SInv, too
- weapon's base accuracy for "heavy" weapons

In terms of stats, pump Dex for accuracy. But given how many things positively affect accuracy, you might find Strength a better investment.

2. EV is boosted by your Dodging skill times your Dex. That is, if your Dodging isn't very high, it doesn't matter what your Dex is since it won't affect EV much, and vice versa. Since Gargoyles have subpar starting Dex and subpar Dodging aptitudes, it's probably not a good idea to overly invest in EV at all.

What exactly is wrong with "nobrainer" charms? Spellpower, success rates, and mana costs exist for a reason. Using a Bolt over a Dart is just as much of a "no brainer" as using any strictly beneficial charm.

Why the hell is it arbitrarily decided that these two schools have all these retarded design rules while blasty mages just get unilaterally bigger and better as they invest further into the school?
>>
>>174294683
Angband is indeed 100+ floors deep, the others are at most 30 and generally start substantially deeper than D:1. There's plenty of overlap.

>How many fucking resistances are there?

>>
>>174295146
Bolt over dart isn't actually a no brainer if you have battle ball, or need to hit something regardless of damage. Like a spore ball in old crawl.
>>
>>174295274
Bolt vs Dart can be addressed by simply having alternate spells within the category you can't have active at once, like the various armor spells or like Tm forms. The de facto difference between bolt and dart is that you can't cast both (which this addresses) and mana costs/success rates (which charms already have).

That's apparently not good enough for the devs though, because stoneskin/ozcubu's armor are terrible and Tms aren't allowed to get any better melee forms than blade hands.

Charms has the problem of tedium. Even if you take out the overpowered trait of Haste in consideration, why is it necessary for it to be an option to recast continuously instead of being a passive action speed buff? It's not like people would not want to cast it ASAP by midgame or any part of the game that they find it right? Regeneration is the same, why is it necessary for it to be a spell to recast continuously when it can just be converted into either a passive buff of innate player HP regeneration per level or simply raise the max hp of all races that can cast it because people would always end up casting Regeneration ad infinitum ASAP anyway?

I can only think of mana costs or spending unnecessary inconsequential turns for recasting to justify their existences as a spell but either way it's pointless. Charms is so goddamn annoying that they should just remove it entirely.

>>
>>174295890
I don't really understand what you're proposing. A dart that turns into bolt over time? Something that makes it that if you learn dart, you cannot learn bolt until you forget dart? The real issue with dart vs. bolt is that they're both really boring spells. Additionally, there are like 8 or 9 spells that are basically dart/bolt.

And as for the other thing, bolt vs. stoneskin isn't really an equal comparison. I can think of many situations with offensive blasters who simply elect to choose a different offensive spell for the situation. IE fireball instead of bolt for a group. For nonblasters, you would never dream of learning dart or bolt. It simply isn't for every character. This is not true of stoneskin and its ilk. The problem with something like stoneskin was twofold. First of all, it was cheap to cast, both in a sense of "this is really easy to learn" and in a "I only need to cast this once per battle, and for 2 mana." Second is that you never had a reason NOT to cast stoneskin, if it was available. Simply put, if your character COULD cast it and was inclined to learn magic at some part of the game, they would. 2 MP is so cheap for what amounts to a permanent AC ring, that it was essentially free. There are almost no battles where you wouldn't want free AC, AND it had synergies with later spells you'd probably want if you were doing so. (IE stoneskin, and putting you on the path for rMsl/dMsl, haste, regen and so on [which are also no brainers for these same reasons]) It was good in the early game, middle game, end game and post game. Its good if you're running away, if you're in the middle of a fight and before a fight. An octopode wizard and a minotaur fighter who were both going to 15 rune would learn the spell, and use it in exactly the same manner. This is true of nearly all charms that the devs have fucked with, and is still true with certain hexes/charms nowadays.

Hexes has the same dumb tedium problem. Recasting+kiting like a fucking spriggan faggot until you proc an inconsequential debuff that doesn't even work against relevant MR3+ enemies is quite the stupid spellschool if I do say so myself. These 2 (two) spellschools are a mistake

After playing crawl for a while I've realized you rarely have to strategize (except in moments where you accidentally get cornered and are close to death).

Other parts of the game involve casting spells over and over in a certain order or attacking enemies to grind, then leveling up then repeating and then bam you win the game.

Most of my deaths are due to me getting bored, zoning out and walking into a crowd of strong enemies.

Are there any roguelikes where you actually use strategy during combat?

The key balancing issue is that charms give a prolonged effect, while attack spells give a specifically-defined effect within the code. Gaining 10 extra turns over the course of 20 standard turns is worth much more than any 5 mana attack spell, for example. They're simply overpowered in a lot of cases, so a constant cost is a necessary balancing measure if they're to do any noteworthy effect at all.

They could address both the balancing issue and the tedium issue by using a ToME/Incursion-style system where the buffs are a toggleable passive but have alternate costs. For example, Charm spells lower your max MP by their level while in effect, and they also give you a constant contamination level appropriate to their level and/or potency. This way the devs can easily control how many buffs a person will be able to stack on themselves based on contamination generation, without resorting to arbitrary exclusions like some of the current spells use. The option of letting charms skill dictate power or contamination level for each individual spell is also free for the devs to play with. Naturally, the game would warn people before they try to cast a charm that would put them into the next stage of contamination. It doesn't even interfere with the ability of attaching additional costs (IE Regeneration's food consumption) if they need to, although it shouldn't even be necessary if they just set the skill and contamination levels appropriately.

Hell, it would even be entirely flavorful because it makes sense that channeling a constant flow of mana back into or around your own body would have magical contamination-related risks.
>>
>>174297416
I can't think of a way to fix charms that wouldn't be removing it so far from the spell school paradigm it's not a spell school anymore.

Should definitely be more about choices, the problem with Haste is the problem the entire thing has, it's just flat numeric buffs that there's no reason not to use every time.

Some kind of swappable charms, maybe mimicking gear slots, might be cool. Choosing between a phase weapon charm that defeats armor and a truestrike charm that defeats EV would give you options and reward you for knowing enemies.

Variable defensive buffs, rF+ with rC- or vice versa, Regeneration in exchange for increased damage dealt, speed boosts for linear movement (sprinting kind of thing)

As much as I hate losing haste, it is the no-brainer's no-brainer, and it's the reason I'm racist against cheiposters.

New to DCSS and already died tons of times.

Couldnt go much far with Minotaur Berserker and Centaur Hunter. Felid seems to be real bad.

MiBe is easy. MiGl is also easy. Both are probably the simplest and most straightforward combos in the game.

I'm doing a MfGl of Yredelmnul right now and it's retarded, but not quite as straightforward as just tabbing through. Not by a big margin though.

Your actual problem is probably getting into fights you shouldn't, failing to use consumables, etc.

Remember that you're probably going to die a lot before you win. I think I died in every branch at least once before I got my first win as a hyperdiesel MiGl with gold dragon armor and +12 holy great mace. So don't save all your potions for a future you don't have. Everything in your inventory when you die was wasted.

Rule of thumb: It's better to use too many consumables than not enough, because if you survive you can find more.

Surviving is mostly about managing combats. Resist the urge to hit O until you've explored most of the level. Explore in circles around the stairs. Maintain a clear path to the stairs at all time. Martial classes can get away with being stupid about exploration by virtue of HP, which can teach you bad habits, but squishy characters and casters cannot. Best to get into the habit now: If you start a fight with black between you and the stairs, you are going to die.

You can press t twice to shout, do that at the edge of an enemy's sight range to pull him in and break fights up into smaller groups. This is critical for later in the game unless you've been Jewing with gozag and have optimal gear.

You can place exclusion zones around monsters which will prevent you from going into their sight radius on accident. Do this when you find dangerous sleeping enemies like Sigmund.

Oh, and remember: Orc before lair, you're in for a scare.

So, I just found a pretty fucking nifty weapon.

Rune of Death is the go-to weapon Rune right (unless it has innate Vampirism)? I am considering holding off for 3 levels so I can use that rune.
>>
>>174303573
Yeah, I'd probably slap death on that beast since it doesn't slay evil or *slay* DUL.
Finding a daemon weapon early is pretty great, and a 4 pval daemon is insane.
>>
>>174303573
rune of air once your level 40+ can go on weapons and gives extra blows. That's the real big one. But this weapon is good now and you can get a lot of work out of death on it so you should do it. You'll find better things to Air up later.
>>
>>174302515

>>

>>
>>174304553
Strength is worth raising now.
If you are going to be a big armoured boy swinging a big armoured boy around, you may as well just get a bunch of strength.
>>
Question for Endgame Rune Knights.

So, I assume I definitely want Rune of Absorption up and running at all times, which either goes in Body Armour, Weapons, or Shield.

Weapon seems *really* to want the extra attacks/leech, and it seems the best Body/Shield Runes are Reflect/Immortality, so I would have to give one of those up.

Which one should I give up? I ask this if I hypothetically find an endgame quality shield and am afraid of "ruining" it by putting the wrong Rune on it.
>>
>>174304745
You put it on your shield.

If you are planning to be device-ing and casting for the endgame though, putting it on your weapon could work.

Not just for big boys. For squishy mage types who want to wear ring or dragon, strength is better up til like 12 strength for getting EV.

Yeah, it's fun but it's a little too 'And then you die' for me. Like, while amusing, deathspirals seem pretty arbitrary and out of your control for the most part. Not to mention everything inevitably goes all boatmurdered eventually.

UnReal World is pretty fun though! Just having a complete fucker of a time catching any wildlife apart from fish, is all. Chased down an elk a couple of times but then the fucker backtracked over his own tracks (twice) and it became impossible to follow him anymore. if you eat up a whole pack of orc skeletons you've got a good chance to get some seeker ammo from at least one of them, or at least a decent amount of ego or well-enchanted ammo

seeker ammo is a lot less ridiculous after version 6.00 though. it used to be 6x the damage of normal arrows (6d4 vs 1d4) but it's now only 2x (6d4 vs 3d4)

Don't you guys hate losing a character and having to start all over again? You have to go back over the same stuff, grinding up through low level mobs and getting gear, all over again.

Don't they have dungeon guardians? I must have missed that.
Also, it's also for the permawalls. Destruction has that annoying property where it always leaves a 1x1 crack for monsters to seep in. Permawalls fix that by creating an unbreakable bubble.
>>174312641
That's one of the main reasons why I try to work around the whole grinding thing. A yeek can get to level 30 in less than 15 minutes with the right approach and then it's just a matter of finding the right gear, which I'm trying to fix also. Once you get gear that's way better than your level, it makes playing the game fun again until you can grind even better gear.

Neat. Found some potions of sleep around the dungeon, which can be evaporated to create a damaging ball spell I can chuck at dragons from afar. Reproducing them costs almost nothing and they should do about 70 "old_sleep"damage (whatever that is). We'll see how that works.

Also the thieves quest gave me an armageddon sword, that's super neat!

I am pretty sure breeder scaling causes them to stop dropping items after a while.
>>
Nope, apparently it just puts enemies to sleep with no actual damage. Who'd have thought.

I'll probably find some more badpots. The one that diminish stats do time damage, that's cool. Except that would also mean that I could turn mature into ancient dragons, which I really don't want.

>>174313532
>I am pretty sure breeder scaling causes them to stop dropping items after a while.
I don't know man, but I just tried that yesterday. I grabbed something like five artifacts and a lot of excellent armor before I sterilized the level and I killed like 500 of the fuckers. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Still, it could be. I'll just have to try again.
>>

I'm just saying to that fellow to get some perspective, the meat of the game time-wise is in the 40+ range when you actually start diving deep.
A plain outcome on a demigod or similar penalty for me with relaxing dragon mountain assaults is something like
1-25 = 1 hour
26-35 = 3-4 hours
36-40 = 5-6 hours?
41-50 = the rest - 10-15 hours with 90% of uniques cleared, for a total of 20-25 hours

And I honestly don't see the appeal of stuff like jelly farming or using a souped-up combo to break the game, I mean I get how prodding the game open is fun in some cases, but I honestly don't get why someone would play PCB if they wanted to sidestep as much grind and danger as possible. There are so many roguelikes that don't involve grinding already.
>>
>>174314540
>for a total of 20-25 hours

With the techniques of the ancient mountain, I learned how to get to level 50 in 5 hours instead of 25. That's the whole and short of it.
>>
>>174314656
No, I mean I'm at 50 by maybe 15-20 hours (quite a bit less on a low modifier, ie 9 hours on 100%), but it's not as if you could just go and kill the Serpent after hitting 50. You'd still need to spend hours thinning out uniques and getting the right equipment. All getting to 50 early does is make some of the mid-tier uniques (the level 50-80 range ones) less of a threat because your HP pool is bigger (not that you'd be able to face them oftentimes anyway, since you wouldn't have the right equipment or staves). So what's the point of an early 50 if you're stuck with a low HP pool in the first place and lackluster equipment because you were busy grinding low level enemies at lightspeed? And you'd just be getting to 50 anyway by playing the game normally? You're not saving a large amount of time since you're searching and killing those uniques anyway for their drops/Serpent insurance
>>
>>174315126
Why are you nitpicking about hours when you said PCB is a game about grinding and it's not a big deal how many hours it takes to complete it since grinding is comfy?
>>
>>174315126
why are you exterminating uniques? does the serpent have the ability to summon hella strong uniques and you need to nullify it?
>>
>>174315126
>kill all uniques
>serpent still summons 50 greater Us
>>
what if there was a unique that can summon only dead uniques like summonning monsters from the graveyard in yu gi oh cardgame and every time you kill that guy he respawns like the horsemen and follows you around levels
>>
>>174315754
>does the serpent have the ability to summon hella strong uniques and you need to nullify it?
Yep. He still summons really nasty shit that summons more horrible shit to its aid though.

Also doesn't the serpent summon clones of dead uniques like the unicorn or is it a unicorn-only thing
>>
>>174315197
It is a game about grinding: grinding equipment and grinding uniques. Speed of leveling is literally irrelevant because they arrive by themselves so long as you're grinding the other two. You'll always be more constrained more by !healing and _healing and resist gaps and damage and AC than you will be by total levels, which you just need a few constitution bonuses/life rating to make up for.

Speed of grinding is a useful metric not so much because superfast grinding is automatically good or desirable (is a snotling necessarily a "more fun" character because of its exp modifier compared to a demigod?), but because too much grinding is clearly undesirable. The stages of PCB are already pretty clear, and as mentioned before, you see how the lategame unique-killing stage is super long. You won't be reducing that in any way by fast levelups. Sidenote that this is why clouded's added uniques gross me out, and why I wouldn't bat an eyelash if every single R'lyeh unique were slashed from the game.
>>
>>174316034
If you have killed so many uniques that the Serpent summons all of the remaining ones on the level at once, I'm pretty sure that Summon Uniques will either summon some clones (1/3 times), or summon greater undead (2/3 times).
>>
>>174316272
>It is a game about grinding
Debatable.
>>
>>174316275

>>

>>
>>174316272
And just to add onto this, clouded is a player who sometimes chooses to sidestep the lategame unique killing entirely, shaving off his total playtime by a huge amount. But this is very dangerous, and he's not immune even as a gudplayer to the occasional choke against the Serpent, no doubt because of it.

currently having my best deep dwarf run, thanks to an early vampiric war axe, but i've got two questions

when should i switch over to a tougher weapon/should i switch over at all? i acquired an executioner's axe of venom and found a randart battleaxe with flame and rElec (but MR-). there's a battleaxe of distortion available in a store, too.

second, i'm trying to decide between two items in stores - crystal plate armor or a ring with rF++ and slay+5. each is expensive enough that i won't be able to pick the other up until much later if at all. my current armor options are fire dragon scales and rF+ plate.
>>
Are batteries in C:DDA rechargable? I mean I know the electric car ones are but can you recharge smaller devices/batteries or are you shit out of luck with them?
>>
>>174322850
How far are you in? A vamp war axe is an excellent weapon, more so on a deep dwarf, but you may want something with more damage after Lair. Don't touch the distortion one, it'll banish your shit. Level axes and eventually use the exec axe when you get to 20-ish axes (may wanna apply a brand weapon scroll on it to pray you get a more useful brand like elec/freezing since venom starts to suck a bit going past orc).

As far as equipment goes, they are both really nice options. How high is your STR/armor skill? I'd take the slay ring since deep dwarves are really tough on their own and so I could cast some random crap on the side personally, but it's entirely up to you.
>>
>>174323130
i'm currently starting lair branches. i do have 2 potions of experience from a bailey to pump exp into axes (was holding off until confirming that switching to exec axe was the right choice). my STR is 22, armor 12.8. i haven't really found any good spellbooks which is why i was thinking crystal plate might be best, but yeah that slaying is appealing.
>>
>>174323314
If you're going for a 3 rune run (which you should be if this is your first run) then the rf ring and your current fire plate will be more than enough to handle the OOFs. You should have chugged the potions of exp earlier imo but w/e. THen again, if you really dont need to cast in a 3 runer (and you don't), you can grab the plate. I'd take the ring but it's entirely a personal preference.
>>
>>174323742
yeah, i've won a few times, just never had a successful DD run. ended up opting for the ring, thanks for the feedback!
>>
>>174323919
I've just checked since I wasn't sure but yeah, you'd actually need to dump some more points into STR not to be encumbered. CPA has an ER of -23, which means you roughly want 25 STR + a decent level of armor so as not to be encumbered.

Why does dragon form suck so much dick on anyone who's not a Draconian?
>>
>>174324263
Actually, thinking of that, why does ice form and hydra form also suck dick?
>>
>>174316272
Evil Patch idea: The game keeps track which levels you have visited, and returning to the same level (defined as a combination of depth and subdungeon) makes it so that monsters on that level don't drop anything and give no experience. Also, when visiting a level for the first time, only the initial monster population gives XP and loot. Newly spawned, summoned, or explosively bred monsters don't give anything either.

(And that variant would then be named "PCB-Antigrinding".)
>>
>>174324634
Addendum: and of course, returning to the same level also makes it so that no items get randomly placed on the floor. Every wilderness tile also counts as a "level", i.e. you can only get experience and loot from each such tile once.

the faster you are, the faster you can die and start a new character
>>

they do totally different things
if your resists are good you may not need preservation. it helps prevent inventory destruction. luck acts like the personality and mutation, gives you better items
>>
Crawl newbie here, can anyone explain why mummies are meant to be so bad? I'm looking at them and the perks of undeath seem pretty sweet. I assume it's not being able to drink potions?
>>
>>174315928
it would summon like 2-3 greater Us
it only gets 50 when they come as the budsquad of a unique U like Cthulhu or Gothmog
>>
>>174351269
That and the shitty aptsm meaning it takes quite a long time to level up your skills, both of which sucks at the beginning of the game
You are pretty much immune to most of the annoying things in the game though
>>
>>174351269
noob too but for me quaffing potions is often a life saver. Much better then scrolls in some situations. But I guess they also have shitty apts.
>>
make a new thread you stupid animals or are we waiting for page 12
>>
>>174351269
Early game is the harder part of the game, which mummies suck at. They make good gozag worshippers though.
>>

>I assume it's not being able to drink potions?

Yep. That's pretty significant -- it's not just healwounds and curing, but *every* benefit that potions can bring: cancellation, might, agility, ambrosia, brilliance, magic, invisibility, resistance. Plus, crap aptitudes and innate rF-, although the latter is less of a big deal past Vaults, if you can even get that far.

If you want undead, go with Ghouls or Vampires.
>>
>>174343680
cult of personality works on literally everything
but the summons roll their level vs your charisma to see if they show up friendly, so it's shitty on low-chr characters
>>
>>174351269

Firstly not being able to quaff potions is a pretty big deal. Plus, they have Rot problems which they *cannot* cure with potions of Healing and have to use valuable Wands of Healing *or* sacrifice MP permanently.

Being Undead means they are vulnerable to anti-undead things. Torment immunity is really fucking nice, but Holy Brand weapons can really ruin your day.

Having absolute garbage aptitudes isn't trivial. Ogres can get away with it because they at least can fall back on clubs. Mummies have *nothing* that isn't shit (besides average Necromancy) and have to grind to be on an even power level with *humans*, let along actually "strong" (easy) races.

They are not unplayable, but they are definitely a difficult race and probably have the most difficult start of any race (which is generally the most difficult part of the game).

berserk is shit though
why would i want some shitty +10 damage bonus in exchange for throwing my device failrates into the trashcan and being unable to reliably use _heal or _destruct
>>
>>174352187
>fall back on clubs

THINK AGAIN, they now have -2 aptitudes for those in exchange for -1 spellcasting aptitudes.

someone very nicely put it that crawl is turning into the world's first roguelike with no features, now that ogres are literally fat humans with worse spells
>>
>>174354485
They did reduce they mindelay skill of giant clubs though. You only need 18 skill to wield a 20 base damage weapon.

Good fighting apt too.

Evocations is terrible (except at the very end of the game, since wands of acid are surprisingly effective at killing Orbs of Fire).

There isn't a good rule of thumb of when to stop training things, especially for skills that don't have numbers you can obviously make some sense of. With weapon skills and magic schools, you can take the swing speed and failure rates as good numbers to go off of; but with Fighting, Armour, Dodging, Spellcasting, and Evocations, you really just have to get a sense that enough is enough.

did the death of 2pak kill evocations?
>>
>>174335728
subtle casting if you're ranged, evasion otherwise

>>174335728
one with magic is really important since your class is basically about shitting 5 million buffs all over yourself
