This is completely wrong. The population of Shu was around 1 million people, Wei around 8 millions. The difference between the two was that when Zhuge Liang gathered 100,000 soldiers, it was 10% of the whole population. One in five male Shu citizens was a member of the army. Losing 10,000 soldiers in a battle meant losing 1% of the whole country in a single day.

Using twice the amount of soldiers and supplies wasn't as much of a strain on Wei, especially if you count the length of the supply line that Shu had to maintain. Avoiding battles with Shu and pulling back from confrontations was the wise choice, as Sun Bin would have agreed in his Art of War. In the end, Zhuge Liang lost despite doing his best because he failed to break the deadlock.

I'll give you that, but the area around Tianshui didn't mean much when compared to the completely Zhongyuan and its massive production, together with safe and well-maintained roads, a legacy left by Taizu and his internal policies. The damage wasn't as massive as you make it.

To make it clear, it's not like I don't believe that Zhuge Liang wasn't a good strategist. He just didn't reach the level that allowed him to actually strategically defeat Wei. Returning to the teaching of the Sun clan, a good general first makes sure that he can win, then goes to battle. Zhuge Liang routinely lacked intelligence about Wei's defenses as if he could just stroll into Changan. He did well in his battles, but they never reached the level of Chibi. This battle wasn't only an epitome of the strategic capabilities because of the size of the armies, but because this single confrontation has been prepared for months on multiple fronts, not only gathering men and supplies, and this is why Zhou Yu was the single greatest strategist in the land. Zhuge Liang never prepared to the extent that he did, and thus never managed to truly push Wei back as hard as Gongjin did.

If you recall, that is quite similar to the plan Jiang Wei attempted to use against Zhong Hui's invasion, so we can say you are no better at being an armchair strategist than Jiang Wei was as an actual strategist.

Zhuge Liang understood that allowing Wei to mass its forces in a decisive invasion would only invite disaster, because Wei could concentrate its forces at any points of defense and still have plenty of troops left over to win any decisive engagement--which was exactly what happened in Zhong Hui's invasion. Jiang Wei placed garrisons in forts that he assumed Zhong Hui would be held up at because, generally, you do not want strong enemy forces at your rear; then Jiang Wei would lead the army and pincer Zhong Hui between the forts and his own army. However, because Zhong Hui had such numbers, he was able to detach forces to siege the forts and continue on. The strategic defensive spelled Shu's doom.

Because Zhuge Liang knew that Wei's power would only grow with time relative to the smaller Shu, his best chance was to take the strategic initiative and attack. In doing so, he put Wei forces off balance for years, punching far above his weight.

By the time of Zhong Hui's invasion, Shu was internally broken, Jiang Wei's defense plans weren't implemented completely and he couldn't man all the posts prepared because Huang Hao controlled the court. Before the Northern Campaigns, the only war that Bashu saw was the Zhang Lu's invasion and the takeover by Liu Bei. Drawing comparison between Shu then and during its fall is a mistake.

If his goal was harassment tactics, they aren't usually conducted with the whole army, but with small but mobile forces that can inflict damage to the enemy infrastructure and retreat while avoiding the enemy forces. With the size difference, Shu would need to kill 10 wei soldiers for each one they lost, but the invasion plans where hasty and never accounted for that. Zhuge Liang was a better tactician than strategist, a better civil officer than tactician and his biggest mistake was probably not removing Liu Shan from power, since he'd be at his best in his position.

It was in large part because Wu was both noncommittal and incompetent that Zhuge Liang could not force the decisive battle; if in the second, fourth, or fifth expeditions (in a scenario that hypothetically has Zhuge Liang live longer) Wu had broken Wei defenses, one could imagine a scenario in which Cao Zhen or Sima Yi would have an unpalatable decision: stay on the defensive against Zhuge Liang while Wu advanced in the east, withdraw east to defend against Wu and let Zhuge Liang take Chang'an and more, or attempt to beat Zhuge Liang quickly so as to then head east. Any of these situations would have been tremendously helpful for the Shu-Wu alliance, but the last one would be the decisive one. If Zhuge Liang won that hypothetical battle, then Wei would be completely routed.

Of course, Wu never succeeded in that, so that never came to pass.

Officers not flinching is actually the best part because it means less chance for them to get knock down and instead eat all your ranged attacks. Wang has such bullshit attack speed that you can shred officers to pieces with just your normal s strings. You need is a very good weapon.

Strategically worse, doesn't have enough roads for real strategic unit placement, developing a base is more interesting in NA:SOI. Battles are similar, but NA has fog of war and I hate that you can't use your sub-officer's strategies in RoTK, so NA's better.

I haven't played Ascension but heard that it kinda breaks the strategic elements of the game, so I can't comment on the officer play in NA. PUK will allow you to have randomly generated babies with your up to 3 waifus (2 kids per waifu) so it's pretty great.

Im playing ROTK 13 on PC. I've never played the game before.

As a ruler, I get a bit annoyed because Im shit at the game, so I either A get flattened or B I expand a lot and then I can't handle constant fights on multiple fronts.

As an officer, I end up getting a bit peeved because I get the worst deal. I raise ranks too quickly and they want me to take control of the armies during fights. Or worse, they say "your area must take that city!" but they wont fucking move unless I suggest it. They wont give me jobs to do unless I suggest it myself. I build bonds with Lu Bu, Lingqi, Diao Chan, Gao Shun, and Chen Dong. Friends or better and we still got shit stomped anytime Cao Cao came at us.

As a ruler, delegate power. Make one of your officers a viceroy, give him a lot of cities and use the council to give him orders to develop and attack shit.

Learn how to fight in a battle (flanking and encircling are your friends, debuff strategies are pretty strong, it's better to use multiple smaller units than one or two strong ones), deploy your own army to somewhere, divert the enemy attention to yourself, then tell the others to attack another place when the enemy takes the bait. Or do the reverse, tell other guys to be a bait somewhere, then move quickly yourself and attack enemy cities.

There's nothing bad about it, it's free 300 gold and you should be smarter than the AI, so the end result will be better. If you don't want it, just reject.

Well, that's the point of giving you the order to do it. Your rank is high enough to hold a city or a district, so they give you freedom of deciding when you want to deploy the army.

Only someone who's higher ranked than you can give you an order. So if you're a governor, only a ruler, viceroy, or one of their ministers can give you personally an order, but usually they won't bother because they can spend them elsewhere. Once you get a city you're the boss there, they'll only give you general guidelines what you should develop/attack.

That's normal, even if you turn off the historical events either Cao Cao or Yuan Shao will dominate the map. You need some skill to be able to contain them quickly, and often it's straight up impossible once they snowball.

While Jia Chong isn't 100% total edgelord all the time as his design might suggest, he's still definitely one of the edgier personalities and the fact they shoved a lot of the dirty work Zhao was in charge of in 7 to him instead doesn't help.

It's not a matter of belief but a fact, RoTK was written this way. The debate between fiction and reality aside, it's obvious for every Asian person that they're the heroes. It's those cynical western barbarians who can't simply accept the benevolence.

Tried to ask this a few days ago and accidentally came close to starting a retarded PC vs console argument.

I am planning on getting a console because Koei's PC ports are a shit. I know it is not the PC platform's fault, but the reality is Jap devs can't into it. However a benefit of PC gaming is that devs can release patches whenever compared to PSN and Live every update has to be held for review before it can be released as well as having to pay a huge fee. In DW7 Empires we did not get the last patch, 1.4, which fixed a lot of stuff and even added content. Last I heard the PC version of DW8 Empires was not just one but two patches ahead of the console version. Did the Western PS3/4 version get fucked again, is it still missing patches? Is this going to be a problem for the console versions going forward? It might make me stick to PC but the PC is missing entire games though (we will never get base SW4 nor SW4 empires because SW4II did poorly).

Well Koei is porting more of their recent games onto PC. Warriors All-Stars is coming, and DW9 seems more likely but not confirmed yet, even that newer Samurai Warriors game is going on steam. If you asked that question two or three years ago, I would tell you to get a console to at least be able to get the games. Now, I would say to wait it out for PC.
