>0.2 billion
>>
>>173316352
Hmm bare in mind i come from experience in the genre so i might not be to helpful but imo as speed etc effects the controlling and lines aspect so much i personally believe you should go straight to the fastest speed class and just chip away at it. Better advice is to stick to fastest but use slower ships which have easier control then try the barracuda ship and when you have that move to the fastest selection of ships (press up on ship select to scroll to them if you've unlocked everything which you can do immediately in >profile). Also find and stick to a course you enjoy for me its ackinovoeseosososo whatever it's called, cassandra is easy minus a nasty left right left and the 2nd track is comfy ish to.
>>
>>173316194
You should be more ashamed for liking a shitty tryhard movie like Driver enough to buy a replica jacket

Shut up pleb, it doesn't try hard at anything and is aesthetically amazing. I bet you can't even name the 70s movie it's a large homage to that i also like so eat a rusty queef.
>>
>>173318243
It's style over substance schlock about a guy with the personality of cardboard with questionable motivations. It's a movie designed for film critics to wank over, nothing more

70s films are largely shite too.
>>
>>173317678
Thanks I'll give that a try. Project utah is the most fun at my current level even though I can't even finish it half the time without using the pit stops. I'm a complete n00b so the game's tearing me a new one, but it's incredibly fun.
>>
>>173318515
>It's style over substance
This is literally the point, it doesn't even claim to have substance you fucking moron it's entirely an aesthetic piece that it succeeds very well in.

>>173318515
>70s films are largely shite too.
You just made yourself out to be a complete pleb and moron which i knew anyway, seriously don't waste your time you're to autistic and basic to appreciate the many dimensions of film. Go watch star wars or transformers again or something more your speed. The conversation is my fav 70s film btw and nah you won't know it or like it anyway because you're to basic.
>>
>>173317678
Oh but what do you mean by "lines aspect" though?
>>
>>173318829
Yeah expect it, it took me a good 2 hrs of runs on acknivosoe whatever last night to get a good pb with the fastest ship without any bumps with only finishing 3 times. The biggest killer in these games is getting really tense when youre on pb pace and fucking up the last lap.

>>173318918
>Oh but what do you mean by "lines aspect" though?
So naturally speed means all steering timing will be different in terms of when you start/finish braking/initiating turning and it also effects yourlines in the literal sense of ship positioning pre-corner entry etc. When i play i literally build a plan in my head and talk myself through it like a co-pilot as i play until muscle memory becomes second nature.

So so dumb, these games you are only ever really competing with the games limits therefore human competition holds little value unless you make the concious decision to try and beat someone, futari bl has literally one player that we know is so close to the theoretical limits that other human effort makes no difference and the same is true with the game i play, is swy's counter stop guwange of no value because at the time no one else was going for it? a good score is a good score and in this genre completely valid for the reason i stated ie the limits of the game assuming you have calculated it which in most games is the case with rare exceptions of new strats being found. Don't worry i know you don't understand this and will continue with the same dire reasoning skills of a child.

Honestly though, a lot of shmups are getting released on Steam now.
If you go back just 4 years, there were hardly any worthwhile shmups on Steam, just euroshmups and a few others like eXceed and Gundemonium, also CCWI. Mostly bullet hells as well. But I think the only good, non-bullet hell, non-euroshmup was Satazius for a long time.

I'm happy that Steam's library of shmups is now so varied that you don't have to relegate yourself to playing euroshmups or don't necessarily have to resort to playing on MAME or other emulators any longer!
We could still do much better though, and I'm hopeful we can do it!
>>

>>
>>173409474
That's mostly because Steam has lifted any requirements for releasing a game when they've introduced Greenlight
Greenlight is closing this year, but they promised to still let obscure games/genres onto Steam
>>
>>173394182

>>
>>173409981

Wut? I heard they just have to pay hundred bucks or so to release a game on steam.
>>
>>173411092
You had to pay $100 to release a game after one week of Greenlight's opening because people were putting memes and games they don't own there
They're closing Greenlight for good (there was an official announcement, I'm too lazy to google it) because $100 barrier didn't stop people from putting fake games on Steam
>>
>>173412775
They are not completely closing it, you just have to pay 100$ per game, instead of only once.
>>
>>173413884
Maybe, it could be more.
>>
>>173413884
https://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/558846854614253751

They promise to bring some sort of quality control back, and when Steam had one before Greenlight, most of the STGs that are currently on Steam wouldn't get published through Steam because they're too obscure
Dunno any more details, though it sounds like they would still sell obscure games through Steam after closing Greenlight, so hopefully more STGs will come to Steam
>>
>>173409474
looking around there are many quality stg on steam now, it is a nice change.

You're off your dick if you think it wasn't rinsed by some jap players. At least 3 according to wiki...

Blue Label

The 'blue label' version of the game was originally a promotional item given to the three highest scoring players at a Cave hosted event.[1] On December 30, 2007 Cave fest, Cave unveiled a special edition of the game, which included increased difficulty in later chapters. The arcade game eventually appeared in cabinet format

>>
>>173426258
Doesn't mean that it's balanced well. It's just fucking annoying, when you constantly die simply because you dodged a milimetre too far to the left or whatever.

The routing is kiddycrap in this game, but the micro dodging makes it just frustrating as fuck.
>>
>>173426452
So you die from fucking up your positioning in a genre all about positioning, sounds good to me.
>>
>>173426452
Yeah I wouldn't recommend that game unless you're specifically into the absurd difficulty.
>>
>>173427082
I die from luck based shit game play. Many patterns in this game are so difficult to dodge, that you can not master them really.

It's not like in well balanced games, where you just have to practice them, and then you can execute the patterns. In this game you can practice as often as you want, because the game always gives a fucking pixel of space to dodge through.
>>
>>173427263
A 1-all of doj isn't that bad, there's some silly moments like the turrets and almost everything the final boss throws at you but besides that it's very doable.

>>

I liked Ikaruga. I imported it back when it first came out for the Dreamcast (I had 3 modified DCs) and it was super exciting. I had a really good friend back then and we made a deal to learn how to full chain every other stage and the plan was to pass the controller back and forth and finish the game with full chains.

I started learning stage 1 and he was supposed to learn 2. I learned the first stage and I had fun doing it, even though it was frustrating at first. He only learned the first third of the second stage though and eventually dropped out of trying. I picked up the second stage on my own and when I was almost at the point that I had full chain I just kind of stopped trying. Mostly because it felt less fun knowing that I was doing it by myself instead of with my friend like was intended.

I haven't touched Ikaruga since but I still have fond memories of it (especially the music). I also still talk to that friend but it is probably 2-3 times a month at best. Such is life.

But it is okay because Patchy fills the void

2nd loop is not another half of the game. It's just a special round similar to another difficulty mode.
If it was another half of the game, it obviously would have new enemies, new backgrounds, new music, etc.
It's just another difficulty mode, exactly the same as beating any modern game on hard mode.
>>
>>173483108
>Batsugun was shit though. Cave only went bullet hell because of garegga.
Regardless of your opinion, the people that went on to popularize bullet hell games also created the first bullet hell game, which came out years before Garegga.

>>173483108
>That's like saying DOJ is a gimmick game because you got a hyper. Just because the game has a gimmick (like every fucking shmup) doesn't mean it's easier.
The difference being that DOJ's gimmick clears bullets very intermittently, while Unlimited's gimmick will be clearing the screen quite often until boss fights. As an additional point, DOJ is a much longer game then, adding endurance to the list of reasons a DOJ 2-all would be harder than an Unlimited 1cc.

>The list is complete bullshit

In CCWI Unlimited killing enemies with lock-on clears bullets, you can spam rechargeable bombs, and you have access to break/double break modes which don't have any penalties aside from double break preventing you from bombing.
In the second loop of DOJWL, if you die, you can't bomb or you won't get the next extend. Similarly, if you bomb you better pray to god you don't fuck up because your next death becomes two. If you hyper without a plan because you fucked up your route, the rank skyrockets and everything starts moving blindingly fast, forcing you to use a bomb which in turn puts you into another risky situation.
In short, you're a fucking idiot.

At the beginning of the second loop, all your lives are taken away. You earn them back one at a time for not bombing and dying in a stage. You can bomb or die, but not both. This also means that if you get hit by a stray bullet after entering 2-1, it's an instant game over.

but it is, otherwise they'd make first loop harder, like they did in batsugun, which is a lot harder than 1-all in donpachi, especially if you don't use autofire. but batsugun sp has a pathetic 1-all , becouse you are obviously intened to get 4-all. i'm using batsugun as an example becouse people who made it went on to create donpachi.
another example is garegga which heavily influenced ddp, it had no loops but was hard as shit, cave could've copied that, but they went with two loops on purpose, which is why 1-all is so easy.
you are thinking that 2 loops in cave is a relic of the past(when games had infinite loops), but it's a conscious design choice.

Played DOJ for the first time last night and was wondering if there was a damage advantage between shot and laser? I know score, movement speed and damage area but does one do inherently more damage than the other?
>>
>>173533396
laser does more damage usually
>>
>>173533396
your brain lacks the capacity to determine this by simply switching between them and observing the outcome... really? double digit i.q?
>>
>>173534626
I lack the spacial awareness to have the chance to look at the health bar for long enough to determine if this is true without getting blown out of the sky. Like I said, first time and it was pretty overwhelming.
>>
>>173533396
Typically your laser does more damage, especially when you point-blank with it (specifically, you will do double damage when you point blank as you're hitting them with the laser and the "aura" around your ship, which does the same amount of damage). However, against weak enemies, the shot will kill them faster. I think this is because the laser does constant damage, while the shot does more of a burst. Basically, kill weak shit with your shot and against stronger enemies use the laser.

If you care about chaining you'll end up using the laser more often than not, since you can maintain your chain by lasering enemies.

Nah, I'd say in current state it's perfectly possible to polish it. Base game is already there. The problem is that they probably didn't bother gathering any feedback on it apart from mainstream review sites, which may be not qualified for this.

>>173555118
What's wrong with the OP?

>>173556704
Maybe the game has changed owner/publisher. Weirdest thing is that the update is going to be free, so it's not even a cash-grab (like some publishers do with re-releases), so I don't know what they're trying to accomplish.
>>
>>173556704
>>173557104
It's nice that they're doing it, but if they're not changing the gameplay in a huge way then it's not gonna do much for it. It's such a tedious, boring and flawed game. Really only worth one playthrough if even that, just for the story. Although whether the story is any good is also questionable.

No. Note that pointblanking deals more damage in CCWI, and this is calculated independently for your options and main shot - so if your Type-II options are pointed far forward and stacked on top of the boss, you're getting stars and extra damage from the pointblanking bonus. Type-III's forward options also have greater pointblanking range than other shot types because of this.

it's harder to be great at a bunch of things than great at one thing
but you need talent to pull it off. this kills the one trick pony.
>>
>>173589709
wrong, firstly you have to state the bar of "great".

being great at many thingswill always mean sacrificed potential in them to accomdate for the spread amongst all, the only way greatness is achieved in more than one thing is by doing one at a time and retiring when a high peak is reached. Don't move the goal posts again you aren't bright enough to back it up.
>>
>>173589896
learning new things and excelling in them is an order of magnitude more difficult than doing one thing over and over again like a literal autistic aka one trick pony

goal posts have never been moved you're the one who presented a strawman in the first place by arguing against statements that were never made. not that i'd expect better from a dumb chavposter
>>
>>173591476
>magnitude more difficult than doing one thing over and over again like a literal autistic aka one trick pony
Wrong and clearly you have no experience to back it up, mastering a single thing involves refinement and the never quest to achieve the impossible perfection that you seek regardless of the absurdity of the task, to remove every imperfection and seek perfect form and execution knowing you will ever only get as close as your unknown limits permit but still going on in the face of this adversity just to find out. You've never done shit and have no idea what you're talking about in this regard so shut the fuck up or continue to spam ignorant theoretical bullshit to provide a window to the speculative mind of a has been never was. The fact you're addressing someone who has learnt more things across a broader spectrum than you ever will in your shit life should be enough but no that arrogant cunt ego fuelled pig head is always set to automatic.
>>
>>173593931
let me demonstrate my point since you're clearly unable to comprehend it. SWY counter stopped guwange when it came out and went on to get countless other incredible scores to solidify himself as the greatest. if you counter stopped guwange it would be the biggest achievement of your pathetic life since you've never done anything worth mentioning. it would likely take you 20 years to accomplish what he did in a fraction of the time because that's the difference between talent and no talent, super player and one (zero) trick pony

now go spin some donuts in an indie racing game that 3 people have played so you can pretend to be good at something dumb cunt
>>
>>173594501
i don't understand what are you trying to prove. just becouse someone achieved something hard in no time doesn't mean it's suddenly easy for the rest of us. i suspect you are just looking for excuses to stay a lazy player.
>>
>>173595840
Don't even bother arguing with him, it's a lost cause judging from the fact he claims that CCWI unlimited is harder than something like DOJ white label. His sense of what's easy and hard is fucked and if something's too difficult for him he just blames it on bad game design.

Good morning. Would you like to play a shmup? I might like to play a shmup. I may just do that today.
>>
>>173595840
my original point was that it's hard to be great at many things. if you don't have talent then you can always be a one trick pony. if you have talent and you're a one trick pony then you're a lazy cunt that could do more

>>173596129

Gotta practice second boss, I have no idea what to do with his smash n' sploodge attack, it leaves very little room to dodge
>>
>>173599868
you original point was that being a one trick pony isn't hard, you've read "hard" in my post as "great", you've also assumed that i'm talking about playing one game forever or some shit.
furthermore, i really fail to see how talent has anything to do with effort, why do you keep bringing talent up, it has nothing to do with how hard you are trying, for example it would be really hard for a baby to move at the speed of average human casually walking.
>>
>>173602516
>average human
average adult i mean
>>
Also, can someone explain me the rank system in CCWI, is it based on break gauge or break mode time?
>>
>>173605645
Or there is no rank system in Original mode at all?
>>

If you're talking about Boost Mode, there's several factors. Firstly when you're outside Break Mode, the rank correlates directly to your Break Rate.

Once you enter Break Mode, several counters start increasing: timer increase since entering break mode (Boost timer to the left of the display), stars gained since entering break mode, and the break gauge advancing from 8.0x to 16.0x as you increase the rate. The rank depends on all of these factors, as your stars/boost timer since entering break mode build up bullet speed goes up, and once you hit x16 enemies start releasing the highest possible amount of suicide bullets.

Once your break gauge goes past the bomb line, you can lock on fully for a 12.8x chain multiplier - prior to this point you're limited to starting a 11.2x chain. Then once your Break Rate is at 16x, killing boss parts in this state gives double the amount of Boost timer for more points and a more rapid rank increase and also results in more score gain from other sources.

There is no permanent rank-increasing effect - all these things only build up as long as you remain in Break Mode. Once you die or bomb, re-entering Break Mode starts building up rank from zero again.

Gaming is absolute shit tier and just a hobby in my life my bmx achievements are by far my greatest, to date no one has done what i did and i am one of the most original riders of the last decade thus why articles exist and i was called a riding genius by 3 x world champion phil dolan and nominated for nora rider of the year by the greatest flatlander of all time martti kuoppa, i also had a fascinating dicsussion with the godfather of flatland kevin jones who spoke of conversations he had back in the 80s/90s about some of the tricks i did and whether they were possible or not and it was me who proved them to be so. There is also a different simple (and irrelevant aside from setting practice settings correctly) rank system in Original and Unlimited, where having more total star count subtly increases bullet speed, and Break Mode/Double Break temporarily result in higher bullet speed during their effects.

>shmups are simple and easier to make than any other type of game
That's not true. It completely depends on the game.
Sure, you can make them pretty simple, since they are old school arcade games, but shmups can also require complex coding and very detailed artwork. Not to mention how important good music is in a shmup.

>>

It completely depends on the quality of the game. And shmups can have pretty damn high quality. They often have top notch artwork and music.

You retards just think "if requires more coding, it must be more difficult", when in reality good artwork and music is much more difficult to produce.
>>
>>173640314
>good artwork and music now qualify software as a game
>>
>>173640490
That wasn't even my point. I just said that VNs also can be difficult to make, no matter how simple the coding in them is.

They are games though. Games about story telling decisions.
>>
>>173640314
>when in reality good artwork and music is much more difficult to produce.
Let's see your fully featured Ikaruga clone written completely in x86 assembly without calls to external libraries then.
>>
>>173638286
>It completely depends on the quality of the game. And shmups can have pretty damn high quality. They often have top notch artwork and music.
That's nonsense. Most doujins are simple looking, some are even outright ugly, and people still play them. Programming is barebone too, most seemingly complex scoring/rank systems or bullet behaviors can probably be written down as a single polynomial. Music can be contract work.

Proper design is the real problem. Coming up with good stages, ships, bullet types & patterns, scoring systems, etc. isn't easy. Most "euroshmups" are panned for design specifically.

>>173640314
VNs are like 99% writing. A lot of popular VNs have mediocre/subpar art.
>>
>>173639713
Software with choices, especially choices that influence outcomes, are games. Whether you think they're fun or not is irrelevant.

>>173640490
That wasn't even brought up in the post, anon.
>>
>>173640920
Also, forgot to mention about programming

A lot of japanese devs don't even bother with remappable keys or configurable resolution, which isn't hard to program, but they just don't give a shit and it's considered okay
>>
>>173640870
There already is an Ikaruga clone written by a french guy with pixel graphics.

>Most doujins are simple looking
That's the case for every genre. Not just shmups. Doujins are always rather simple looking. Doesn't matter if you make a racing game, jump n run, roguelike, or whatever. It completely depends on the game how hard it is to make.

>Music can be contract work.
Everything can be contract work... You also can pay a coder to produce the for you. You really have no idea the fuck you are talking about.

>>
>>173641384
>That's the case for every genre.
Not exactly. Shmup players just don't care about the graphics most of the time. Most 2hu games are literally two-three recolors of a low-res animu girl sprite. Same goes for poor platform support. The entry bar for quality of the shmups is very very low as long as the game is designed well and plays well.
>>
>>173641682
You were just cherry picking with some random insider knowledge about coding, acting like you had any idea.

Coding a game is easy nowadays, no matter of the genre, except you try to do something totally original. The hard part about making games is just the art and music.

2hu is really not a good representation of the whole genre.
It's still a riddle to me why these games are so popular.

A much better representation would be doujins by Siter Skain or Astro Port, which can have very good graphics and music. Doujins in other genres are not any better.

My point was people see 2hu or some other doujin and decide "we can obviously make a better game just because we can make a better looking game/more PC friendly game/etc."

While I like how Astro Port and Siter Skain games look (I actually LOVE Astro Port's art style, except for witchbot and that grendaizer game), they still kinda look dated even for PC indies. Kamui's resolution is so small so you could play it on a 10 years old cellphone.
>>
>>173643891
>still kinda look dated even for PC indies
Have you even ever played other pc indies from other genres?
They are very good for indie games. Most indie games mini games like Devil Daggers or whatever, which was 10 imes easier to produce.

The genre is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if you make a shmup, metroidvania, or whatever. It just completely depends on the quality of the game.
>>
>>173644213
To be honest, I have no idea why did DD sell this well because it has all the qualities of japanese shmups that make them unpopular in the west

How do you play? Do you play in long session, few hours at time concentrating on a single game or more sporadic, now and then? Do you use proper arcade stick?

I just installed latest mame and with the hlsl scanline shader most of the games look pristine. At the moment I only have DS4 controller. Been thinking about getting something else but using full-blown arcade stick might not be worth it for me...
>>
>>173652313
>How do you play? Do you play in long session, few hours at time concentrating on a single game or more sporadic, now and then?
Depends on game, time, and goal.

>Do you use proper arcade stick?
No.
>>
>>173652313
Depends entirely on my free time and how dedicated I feel. If I'm busy or not feeling up to it, I'll play maybe 30 minutes to an hour of practice every few days. If I'm feeling motivated, I can easily spend anywhere from 4-8 hours practicing and doing runs every day.

You'll get the best results by concentrating on one game, but if you're feeling burnt out you can throw a few other games to (casually) play alongside it.

Method of control doesn't mean shit unless you plan to play on an actual pcb, in which case get a stick.
>>
>>173652595
Calm down... You should save your words, this is not a blog/novel.
>>
>>173652313
I focus on one long-term goal that I practice a lot less than I should, but I also have a few games that I play for fun on the side but don't practice.
I wish I had started using a stick earlier on because now I'm stuck in a position where I don't want to sacrifice practice time in my main game to bring myself up to speed with another control scheme.
>>
>>173652313
I'm a casual player so I play in short sessions though sometimes multiple times a day. I usually end the session as soon as I notice that I got frustrated and start making early mistakes. I play only one shmup at a time and usually move to a different one not very long after clearing the game, mostly because I get tired of it by that point, though I cycle through new games and games I've played to improve the score a tiny bit and see if my general skills have improved.

I use keyboard, tried gamepad at some point but it's unusable. Someone in this thread pointed out that cheapo gamepads can have pretty bad dead zones and there's no point in using them.
>>
>>173645568
It has an eye catching aesthetic and exploited people's nostalgia over early fps games which is a type of nostalgia baiting that's still novel. People see it and want to check it out immediately. That's all there is to it really, almost no one who plays games actually gives a damn about gameplay.

And I actually also play for score. Pretty sure most people voting DOJ never played the game for score.

>>173665345
So even when using the easy mode ship you can't clear it consistently
>>
>>173665715

Post your Type Z scores pls.

I can clear the game consistently with Type Z, even when going for top ten scores.
With the other ships it's a bit more tricky, but with Type Z i am pretty comfortable at the game.

The arguments Kraut makes are fucking shit, they always boil down to "but this game is DIFFERENT because I like it!"

DOJ scoring is strict as fuck. CCWI scoring is much more accesable.
In DOJ to score halfway decently you must know every enemy position and must know exactly what you are doing. It's made for complete pros only. That's why I am sure most people didn't play it for score.
>>
>>173665908
>Post your Type Z scores pls.
Ah, the classic "prove your worth to discuss this with me." Everyone knows Type Z is easier, it's been acknowledged in every discussion of the game.

>>173665917
>"but this game is DIFFERENT because I like it!"
Not quite, he confuses his disliking a game for it being bad. Different method, same result.
>>
>>173666579
Losing your chain is extremely punishing but even n00bs can build up decent chains here and there and get a decent idea of what scoring in doj is like
>>
>>173666685
>Everyone knows Type Z is easier
It's easier, yes, but not easy mode.
Novice is easy mode. Arcade is always challenging, no matter if Type Z or not.

>he confuses his disliking a game for it being bad
I do not dislike games like DOJ or Ketsui, otherwise I wouldn't play them myself.
I just know that games like CCWI or Ikaruga are way better designed and much more polished.
>>
>>173666789
No, they really can't. It's completely different.
>>
>>173666893
>I just know that games like CCWI or Ikaruga are way better designed and much more polished.
Well then I guess I should rescind my statement. You DO think that games you like are better, merely for the fact that you like them.
>>
>>173666789
If you just build up chains here and there, your score will still be completely pathetic.
Good players make more points in the first stage, than noobs in the whole game.
>>
>>173666893
Calm your assburgers kraut, "easy mode" is always used in relative terms
>>
>>173666964
>merely for the fact that you like them
No, merely for the fact that they are more polished and better designed.
They have better gameplay, better graphics, and better music. That's why they are better.
>>
>>173667105
Then I could also call it hard mode, because reaching my scores with Type Z is way harder than reaching your shit scores with any ship.
>>
>>173666906
In what way? Let's say a newbie that's just going for a 1cc learns how to chain the entirety of stage 1 with the only exception being not knowing how to keep it going after the spinning disc enemy. Does he not know anything about doj's scoring? How about this principle applied to other levels to a lesser extent, with players learning a good chunk of the chaining while still not knowing some tricky parts? I don't see why you would need to be able to consistently chain full stages to know how the doj scoring works.
>>
>>173667330
Should have known that your disability would prevent you from thinking in relative terms
>>
>>173667638
Everyone can score to some extend, no matter of the game, but getting a remotely decent score in DOJ is just too difficult.
When you can only chain some chunks of the game, your score will be still complete garbage compared to good scores, who can chain through whole stages and know how to get all the bees.
>>
>>173668147
While true it's also not my point, you don't need to be able to get good scores to judge how much you like a scoring system. You simply need to understand how it works and have some experience applying it, both of which you can do in doj while still having a shit tier score just because of how punishing the game is.
>>
>>173668147
Everyone can score to some extent, no matter of the game, but getting a remotely decent score in CCWI is just too difficult.
When you don't know the right places to use break mode, your score will be still complete garbage compared to good scores, who can do extremely dangerous point blanking to build gauge and know precisely when to break/double break.
>>
>>173668327
>you don't need to be able to get good scores to judge how much you like a scoring system
If you never delved deeper into scoring systems and only scratched the surface of the scores achievable in the game, you have no idea how it is to play for score. Just because you made some chains doesn't mean you played for score.

I agree that you don't have to play for score to know if you like the system or not. I think you do not even have to play a game to know if you like the game or not, but it'd be still more convincing if you actually played it.
>>
>>173668519
I don't have that much experience in DOJ yet, but I do not think CCWI is as difficult as DOJ. At least not on Original.

In CCWI finding out where to use break mode to get decent scores out of it is not that hard. You just use where a lot of enemies are around. And make chains is much easier, because you just can spread your lock-on across the whole screen, and then use shot. You also don't have to maintain your chain through whole stages. You just have to be able to start a chain at certain points, and then it basically works by itself.

In DOJ however, you must try to link your chains through whole stages, you must be able to collect the bees while chaining, and you must know the exact position of enemies appearing on the top of the screen to hit them with your laser immediately. To me this is very difficult. Even more difficult than CCWI.
>>
>>173668598
>I agree that you don't have to play for score to know if you like the system or not
So what are you disagreeing with then? Obviously the better your are the more knowledgeable you are about the game but that doesn't mean you need to be a top player to judge whether or not you like a game.
>>
>>173669239
You don't need to be a good player, but it'd make it more convincing.
I'm pretty sure most people who voted for DOJ only did it to feel "hardcore", even though they are complete shit at Cave games.

I can beat my favorite games. My favorite list would be Ikaruga, CCWI, Gradius, and R-Type, and perhaps Garegga.
I can beat them all. Because those are actually well balanced games.
>>
>>173670019
Ikaruga looks and sounds dull to me, the visuals are just grey and lifeless and the music's some meandering rpg shit. CCWI looks like an absolute mess with the acidic colours, and the music typically devolves into random nonsense like the guy's just picked a scale and then went ape on the keyboard.

Absolutely none of my friends are interested in playing for 1ccs or scores , yet they're enthralled when I have them try Cave games. I've told them nothing about this (false) reputation Cave games have of being extremely hard, and they've never told me that they seem hard until we play around in 2nd loops.

Face it, Cave managed to do exactly what arcade games should do: be enjoyable whether you want to be "hardcore" or just throw some credits in.

Note that I'm not saying Cave games are objectively better than others purely for being Cave. Hell, they don't even make my favorites. But you don't have to be "hardcore" to enjoy them.

>>173670019
>but CCWI and Ikaruga are even better.
All this said, you should stop sucking CCWI and Ikaruga cock so much. We get that you like them, and that you prefer them to Cave. I also understand that you think Ikaruga has a bad reputation here, and, admittedly, it does, but fellating it all the time all while saying everything else is shit will do nothing about that. Children are capable of grasping this concept, yet this conversation keeps happening.

If you think Garegga is well-balanced, then you're absolutely deluded. It's a fantastic game that I love dearly, but it's great purely by accident. Nearly every piece of the game that is required to 1cc it is obfuscated; just a few days ago on Twitch, people were giving blatantly false advice because even with the Internet at everyone's disposal, the game is still a giant shmup-flavored puzzle.

Btw, can anyone tell me perhaps how the rank system works in DOJ? Does the rank go completely down when using a single bomb, or are there different levels of rank, depending on how often you use hyper? Would I have to use 2 bombs to get the rank at normal again, after using 2 hypers, or how does this work?
>>

>for no reason
I don't hate cavedrones for no reason. I made the experience that they can be very cancerous.
>>
>>173672205
Rank increases exponentially based on the number of hyper items you use. 1 hyper item barely affects your rank, and at low level can essentially be used as another bomb. 2 hyper items won't do too much to your rank, but try to avoid this as much as possible. I wouldn't recommend using 3 or more except in certain places, such as the portion of stage 2 directly after the midboss, where chaining is incredibly easy. If you are playing for score, however, you will likely have an idea of where you wish to use hypers already.

Rank is lowered by bombing while a hyper is active or dying. Just bombing does nothing but use a bomb and get rid of your Maximum bonus until you fill your bombs back up. Bombing will only lower your rank a small amount, however. I believe it completely negates 1 hyper item but I'm not entirely sure on this. I do not know how much dying reduces your rank either; I believe it's based on your current rank, i.e. if you die with higher rank, more is removed. Regardless of the accuracy of that belief, though, dying removes much more rank than bombing with a hyper will.
>>
>>173672673
NOTE: Rank affects you more in White Label. This isn't to say you won't make the game harder in Black Label by solely using 5 hyper medals every time, but the effects of doing so in Black Label will not be so stark as the effects in White Label.

>>
>>173673061
You would have to die several times to completely negate that rank increase. If you're not playing for score, I would recommend not using more than 3 at a time. It's perfectly possible to all the score extends by only using 3 hypers at the final section of stage 2. Hell, it's perfectly possible to have all the score extends at the end of stage 2 by only using 3 hyper medals there, if you can get 2 good chains in stage 1.

Constantly dying no matter how often you practice is also not interesting.

And even if you really 1-alled it, doesn't mean the game is well balanced.
It's a game where you can practice as much as you want, you can not get consistent at it, except your are exceptionally well talented, because the game gives very little space to dodge.

>They're just video games.
Doesn't mean they are easy. Playing shmups is actually way harder than making them. It's full of frustration and hitting walls. You constantly have to repeat the same thing over and over again, and if you do one mistake you can start from new, again and again. this is much harder to do than many other things, where you constantly make progress.
>>
>>173676192
>Didn't you guys say a 1-all would be only be 50% of the game?
I've never said anything of the sort. It depends entirely on your goals. A 1-all is satisfying to me right now; in the future I'll be coming back for a 2-all.

>And even if you really 1-alled it, doesn't mean the game is well balanced.
I never said this either. White Label is horribly unbalanced. Type-B sucks ass; slower, wider shot making it harder to control what popcorn you kill, and it has a bigger hitbox. Black Label fixes this issue by giving Type-B the smaller hitbox, while Type-A is still smaller than WL Type-B I believe.
Unless this is not what you mean by balanced. It's far, far too late for me, and even if I didn't already know you were German, I could tell that you're not a native English speaker.

>Doesn't mean they are easy.
I already addressed this. You're not studying for a medical or physics related degree, stop making excuses to feel better about failure in a video game. Nearly every game in this genre is more difficult than the more popular games being released these days, so saying the game is difficult is unnecessary.

Not that I'm saying the game isn't difficult, but I don't understand complaints about difficulty when you're the one subjecting yourself to this. This isn't just directed at you; several posters here have bitched about the games they're playing, and it's sad.
>>
>>173676192
>Playing shmups is actually way harder than making them

>I never said this either.
You argued that the game difficulty would be well balanced. I think the game difficulty is horribly unbalanced. It's basically only meant for pro-players, and everyone else can fuck off. That's not well balanced in my eyes, it's just retardation difficulty. It's obvious that cave has little idea about difficulty balance, otherwise their games wouldn't be so often counterstoppable.

>I could tell that you're not a native English speaker
This is something I really couldn't care less about. Bet my english is still better than your german.

>You're not studying for a medical or physics related degree
Studying is nothing but memorization too. You just memorize stuff you have to learn. And there you actually make constant progress. Not like in shmups where 90% of the time spend is just you making zero progress, which is way more frustrating.

>saying the game is difficult is unnecessary
Of course I was talking about shmups in general, not just games in general. DOJ is supposedly the hardest cave game ever released. Not sure how true this is, but seems reasonable to me from my experience. I find Cave in general already too difficult, but DOJ is just retardly difficult.

>I don't understand complaints about difficulty when you're the one subjecting yourself to this
I don't even play WL which was the one we were primarily talking about, but whatever. I just play BL, because I wanted to test out how the game is. And to me it seems unbalanced. It is not very fun to me, unless you are a pro-player perhaps, who can dodge like a pro. IT's not a bad game, that's why I played it, but it's just too difficult to get consistent at those very tight dodges often.

To me, a good game should be challenging, but it also should be playable by non-superplayers.
>>
>>173676974
It's also much more frustrating. When you work on your own shmup, you make constant progress, and always have little suv´ccess experiences, but when playing shmups, you often make no progress at all, or just very little. It's just horribly frustrating compared to other things
>>
>>173676974
Also, why would a score justify it less than a game created?
Because people don't care about your score? Many people also don't about your game.

I don't think that shmups are unrewarding, they are just not popular here and noone cares about your scores. But that doesn't mean they are unrewarding. They are just horribly frustrating and require a lot of dedication to reach a goal.
>>
>>173677353
>You argued that the game difficulty would be well balanced.
I don't recall doing this. Please point out when I did so, I'm too tired to be arguing semantics on the Internet.

>It's basically only meant for pro-players.
It's made for people that find Cave games enjoyable. These can be superplayers, or they can be garbage-fire players like me.

>This is something that I really...
This was not meant to be a slight against you, this was meant to say that I can sometimes have trouble decoding what you mean. English is a stupid, stupid language.

>DOJ is supposedly the hardest cave game ever released... DOJ is just retardly difficult
In all of their games with multiple loops, the first loop is non-indicative of the difficulty of the second loop. The second loop of DOJ is what is infamous, the first loop is standard fare. If you're using Shottia or whatever the laser bitch's name is, the first loop isn't much harder than DDP.

>And to me it seems unbalanced. It is not very fun...
It's not fun to you because it's not fun to you. There ARE some tight dodges to be made... In the final stage. These dodges can still be alleviated with proper routing. As someone that has played for score, I'm surprised that this argument has to be made to you. Maybe I've become a better player since then, but I gave up on CCWI because I couldn't route the latter half of stage 5.

>To me, a good game should be challenging, but it also should be playable by non-superplayers.
Again, I have a 1-all and even have a(n unwatchable due to Twitch fuckery) highlight of it, and to even suggest that I might be a superplayer is laughable. If you're not having fun with DOJ, stop playing it and do something you enjoy instead. Please, I beg of you.
>>
>>173677801
Because it's some intangible number the meaning of which is only truly appreciated by a few people. Game dev is rewarding because it's the hard work and dedication with relatively little frustration and the bonus of not only having something you can boot up yourself and always have fun with it but also helping you develop other skills that you can apply towards other pursuits and far more recongition. Just seeing someone have a blast playing your game is a great feeling even if your playerbase is tiny.

You replyed to my post where I said that WL difficulty is unbalanced and too hard, and tried to convince otherwise.

>These can be superplayers, or they can be garbage-fire players like me.
I doubt that you are a garbage player if you can clear this game. Perhaps you don't have to be a superplayer, but the game requires very good dodging. The routing is pretty simple, but many of the dodges in the game require huge precision. Too much for my taste.

>There ARE some tight dodges to be made... In the final stage.
I don't know which game you played, but in the game I played the stage 2 boss already requires very good dodging. Not to mention the dodges you have to make at stage 3 boss... The game is just full of very tight dodges.

>As someone that has played for score, I'm surprised that this argument has to be made to you.
The games I played for score never required such tight dodging. The dodging in CCWI original are pathetic to the type of dodges you have to make in DOJ. CCWI is just all about routing and nothing else, except for the TLB, you hardly have to do any tight dodges.
>>
>>173678045
So it's just all about recognition to you? I personally couldn't give less of a shit what people think about me. A score is just a score, but a game is also just a game.

I understand that many people find shmups unrewarding, due to the little recognition you from all the hard work, but I think stuff like this is overrated anyway. It all just depends on hwo proud you are yourself about what you did. Even if noone knows about your score, you still know that you were able to do this, and how difficult it was, and not everyone can do this, and not everyone can have this much dedication. That's what really counts. Not how many likes you get on youtube, but how proud you are yourself of what you were able to do.

Shmups can get incredibly difficult, and good players have all the right to feel proud of themselves.

It's not just recognition, recognition's just a part of it. Obviously I feel good when people praise my work no matter what it is, but as I've said there's also a lot of other benefits to it unrelated to recongition. Not that I think that shmup players shouldn't feel proud of their score though

So as long as you can't make money with it, whatever you do is a waste of time or what?
That's pretty sad. Sounds like you will never be able to enjoy a hobby then, since they are just hobbies and not a job.

Playing shmups is horribly under appreciated. In contrary, people rather talk bad about when playing playing shmups, but I honestly couldn't care less.

This society is completey backwards anyway. people will kiss your ass if you do some stupid shit in an hour, but if you put 500 hours in a shmup, they will just laugh at you, simply for the stigma attached to playing video games in this society. I really couldn't care less what people think.

I don't have to overcome anything, fucktard.
Excessive micro dodging, mixed with completely autistic unaccesable chaining is just not my thing I guess.

He is a farmer with a reco pillow, who hangs around with people like softdrink and also has a mod of Ketsui I think, so he probably is a cave drone.
And that he likes garegga is a fact. At least I saw him playing it and liking it once.

you can call him many things but he's not a cavedrone. I think the ketsui mod was made many years ago.
