Making things purposefully obtuse is not the correct way to balance a gameplay feature. If it's the "only challenge left" about combat then that means that there's something wrong about combat itself. You say it removes a layer of skill, but I'd argue that particular layer of skill shouldn't even exist in the first place. There are many other and far, far better ways of keeping combat challenging without making things pointlessly complicated for no good reason.
