They really don't. Seems implied that we went out of range from communications. We got up to just past the start of the Reaper invasion, but Liara even says in her message that she doesn't know if it will reach them.

I can't imagine they're going to pick an ending now, especially not the 'failure' ending, just trying to keep it as open as possible.
