SoV/Echoes should be fine, yeah. It made many improvement from Gaiden, very comparable to Sacred Stones now (which I also recommend playing). Try out 1 or 3, 4 (then 5 afterwards), 6, 9, and Conquest when you get a chance. These games tend to be friendly to players regardless of entry point.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Reposition is overall the best non-dance assist skill in the game. You can use it like Smite, you can use it like Swap, and it becomes extremely versatile with a flier as well compared to the other skills. Reposition non-flying units between each bridge on Twin Bridges, advance quickly on Lava Cancer, it's insanely good.
