Don't use float, int, etc. by themselves in your code. For the sake of safety, write small classes that contain the primitive type you want to use as their only fields, and use instances of those classes instead.

POD structs aren't safe. Use classes with accessor methods instead. Same goes for enums, write classes with const fields that are returned by accessor methods. It's much more elegant that way.

Now you're getting the picture. Putting an agdg logo in your game like hopoo did at this point is like bending over and begging to be accepted. Don't do it. You don't want to be accepted here or to pay homage here or to try and stake claims in this """community""" unless you're mentally feeble and socially desperate for attention and have nothing else to do with your life like gogem.

I already stated the benefits, all of which are critical to writing good software. And just as RAM usage is no longer a concern, neither is CPU usage. The slowness you mention is still so minute that the user won't notice a difference.

What they will notice, though, is when your game crashes because you didn't practice safety precautions.

need ideas for fun physics based enemy types.

i plan on going totally overboard with enemy variety, so far i've got guys with spider legs, drones, zombies, rushdown exploding guys, heavy guys with shields and body armor, humanoids that re-asemble iron giant style if they get cut up, etc.

just things that are threats but use physics in a unique way.

Wrong, a class with accessor methods is always better. "Struct" shouldn't even be a keyword, and using them is a sign of poor programming skills.

>>173067371
An unsigned integer class can include sanity checks to avoid overflows/underflows; a float class can include comparison logic that accounts for floating-point accuracy; char and int8_t classes can exist simultaneously to explicitly refer to characters and 8-bit integers, respectively, and safety is preserved by preventing one from being confused with the other. And so on.

CPU usage is a huge concern, even in indie games. But typically it's about optimizing resource intense systems, like physics, rather than death by a thousand cuts so I doubt wrapping primitives would cause problems.

I guess if you have a small set of values that need to change, it's okay because the memory it takes up will be small.
However, having mutable structs is a bad idea. As a means of making struct fields immutable, we make them readonly. However, if we make them readonly, then every time we want to change a single field we have to reconstruct the entire thing.

I recommend you read

It seems to me that simplifying programming by removing mutable state is like "simplifying" a car by removing the dashboard: the finished product may be simpler, but good luck making it interact with end-users.I f you play a video game, there are tons of state variables, beginning with the positions of all the characters, who tend to move around constantly.

Agdg How is my Testo of Sound and or Progresso? I know the sounds need more work like on the monster that appears at the top but how do you like it so far? There is a lot of toy/machinery on this level and I tried to have nature sounds as well but coming from the open window.

I'm also considering making toy robot enemies for the level but I'm not sure since its packed already with traps and the like.

Iv been filling the bedroom background with 3D models of other agdg devs games if you'd like your model in there as an easter egg let me know and send me a model.

The engine you use doesn't matter but purposefully avoiding Steam is suicide, it doesn't fucking matter if you lose 30% from every sale since you wouldn't have these sales without Steam to begin with.

More than zero dollars which is what you will have if you don't use Steam.

>The only correct way is to put your game in every digital store possible.
this implies digital stores inherently control market share when in reality only steam has any semblance of control over it's market share and it's all based on toxic practices like the digital trading market and cultism.
>>
>>173073678
but his game will be the next Minecraft, don't you get it, anon?
>>
Reminder that it doesn't matter that Steam takes a cut since you can price your game higher to offset it and people will still buy it since it's on Steam (which means convenience, achievements, trading cards, etc.).
>>
>>173073870
if you want to make any money off of steam you have to charge your game at ridiculous high prices that no one is going to pay so you are still left with $0 either way using Steam

Steam was a mistake
>>
>>173073610
In the US:
your takehome = (1 - Steam's cut - Engine's cut) * (1 - Tax rate) * Revenue

Worked example, with $100k revenue, 30% taxes, Steam and UE4:

Your takehome = (1 - .30 - .5) * (1- .30) * 100k = 45.5k.

Note that even if taxes are 65%, you still make some money because of the order the multiplications are applied. It's NOT just tax + steam cut + engine cut.

Depends on the game and damage model.

If it's something simple like "this monster takes 3 hits to die" then indicators aren't really necessary, remembering the HPs of each creator becomes part of the game.
If it's an RPG with focus on damage types and resistances with big damage variations then numbers and bars are the way.
If it's somewhere in between then just a bar should suffice, it really depends on how much information you want to convey to the player, I dislike numbers everywhere so I would go for a more immersive option like a bar, more subtle indicators or nothing at all.

Monolith, Clarentdev (ripip), bokube, Frost, Umbrella Warriors, Apotheosis, maybe Whimp have sufficient quality already to get published, going off of Dreaming Sarah, who got a publisher when they were still blocking out levels. Finished with fire stuff. You can shoot fireballs from different directions with the up and down stab. The fireballs will chase any enemy you have targeted regardless of your stab direction. if (GEngine) GEngine->AddOnScreenDebugMessage(-1, 5., FColor::Green, TEXT("Collision checks for ledge"));
FHitResult result;

auto forward = GetActorForwardVector();
auto up = GetActorUpVector();
auto loc = GetActorLocation();
auto rayStart = loc - forward * 10.;
auto rayEnd = loc;

if(GetWorld()->LineTraceSingleByChannel(result, rayStart, rayEnd, ECC_Ledge)) {
TArray<FHitResult> result2;
auto rayStart2 = result.ImpactPoint + forward * 5. + up * 20.;
auto rayEnd2 = rayStart - up * 20.;

if(GetWorld()->LineTraceMultiByChannel(result2, rayStart2, rayEnd2, ECC_Ledge)) {
if (GEngine) GEngine->AddOnScreenDebugMessage(-1, 5., FColor::Green, TEXT("First ray got a hit..."));
for(auto it : result2) {
if(it.Actor.Get() == result.Actor.Get()) {
auto finalLoc = result.ImpactPoint;
finalLoc.Z = 0;
finalLoc = loc - finalLoc;
finalLoc.Z = result.Actor->GetActorLocation().Z - finalLoc.Z;
auto finalRot = it.Actor->GetActorRotation();
//Controller->SetControlRotation(rot);
movement->MoveUpdatedComponent(finalLoc, FQuat(), true);
movement->bOnLedge = true;
movement->SetMovementMode(MOVE_Flying);
if (GEngine) GEngine->AddOnScreenDebugMessage(-1, 5., FColor::Green, TEXT("Collision!!"));
break;
}
}
}
}
}
}
[/code]

This is what I'm currently using for my ledge grab. In spite of the fact that collision is registered correctly,
- Z offset is never applied for some reason, so the player is stuck at whatever height he collided instead
- Rotation is likewise never applied. I of course tried to put the rotation in FQuat as opposed to using the (uncommented) SetControlRotation. Neither work, and the combination of both doesn't either.

finalLoc.Z = 0;

You 0 out the impact point, then subtract that 0 from the actor location, and then use it again, I don't see how it could ever change your Z offset.

Okay this is probably dumb but can anyone help with this?

Using Unity. I basically have a "Turn Manager" object that keeps track of who's turn it is to attack.

You can see in the Start() that I made the enemy attack first. So when the game starts, everything works fine. The enemy shoots the projectile and after the yield return new waitforseconds, the player is able to attack.

However, after the player's turn ends, the system gets fucked and the enemy shoots off a bunch of bullets as opposed to one. It still switches to the player though so thats good.

Any help?

1. Make a gradient. Colors make all the difference.
2. Cloud brushes, particles, etc. Make sure the layer wraps around horizontally, use offset filter in Photoshop to check.
3. Apply filters, because sometimes cloud brushes are fuzzy or pixelated.
4. Download Pano2VR and export textures as cube faces. Set up skybox in the engine.

I'm an electrical/comp engineering TA. I know this because this sort of thing matters when you're dealing with raster image buffers.
Rendering starts in the top left corner and moves in rows until it reaches the bottom. In order to keep consistency with this standard, you want to keep the for(y) { for(x) }} pattern. I know "It doesn't matter", but it does.
>>
>>173099787
So wait, this is very unclear. Do you fill one row at a time? That means it goes along the x-axis first. If you fill one column at a time, that means you go along the y-axis first.
>>

UI Buttons need to be the child of a Canvas or they won't render. You need to add a Canvas to your scene and then attach your buttons to them.
You'll also probably want to add a panel to you canvas and add some layout components to that so you can lay them out in a grid or a row or whatever.
Attach your buttons like this:
aButton.transform.parent = aPanelInACanvas.transform;

Also you need to add:
using UnityEngine.UI;
to the imports.

and don't get the <GUI_Button> component, that's the old UI type, you just want GetComponent<Button>(); You probably didn't get the autocomplete for it because you didn't import the UI namespace.

You're welcome.

They don't. Even using something like SDL your not going to be syncing your for loops with the displays refresh rate in any circumstance whatsoever regardless of what your trying to do. Nor could you do so even if you wanted without writing your own video card drivers and coding in assembly.

Your a tit is what you are. What computer setup are you imagining where your going to be writing directly to the framebuffer memory in sync with the monitor refresh. I doubt most people here are programming on an atari 2600.
Fact is your either going to write to a virtual framebuffer where all that shit is abstracted away from you or more likely you'd be uploading the whole textures to the graphics card and letting it do it's thing with it.
In no realistic setup would you be trying to sync your for loops the the refresh rate, that would be idiotic to do on any kind of modern computer.

this is a shot from my game engine

my images are stored as an array of pointers, each pointer points to an array of ints

the first array is the list of lines, and each pointed to array is a row of pixels

I bet it would have a noticeable framedrop if I went x,y instead of y,x
>>

>>
>>173102668
>Do your loops either way it makes no difference.
It does. One way will be much faster because it matches how the memory is laid out and will utilize the CPU cache efficiently.

Even if it's not an image, it's not hard to imagine how it might be used in a game. Think of a tile/voxel grid represented by a 2D/3D array.
>>
>>173102991

I just solve it by using vsync though, then it all works perfectly

Your just ensuring you're not writing to memory during the refresh process, that has nothing to do with what you where doing in your array loops during the actual refresh. It makes no difference if you go xy or yx because your not in sync with the scanline in any sense.
To be in sync with the scanline you'd need to be reading the clock of your video adapter and putting nops in your code to make it run the precise amount of time it takes to update each pixel. That's not what you're doing. The order of iteration doesn't matter in any practical sense.

Anon...

>>173105085
Plenty of devs do voice for their own game. Plenty of devs just get really desperate actors to do it for near free. Plenty have money to just hire top talent.

I have yet to see it being profitable in the long term, nor see it create any irreplaceable talents that started (and stayed) in games. So immediately making the leap to 'irreplaceable because I voiced characters in my games' seems quite the jump.

Good luck.

You don't need top talent or even a high end mic to do voiceovers. Hell I do my own voiceover work for my game and ontop of that I use my built in laptop mic. It's good enough for indie, nobody expects AAA studio quality for your horse fucking simulator anyway.

I have about 6 old shure xlr dynamic mics, I don't use them with pc because how would you connect an XLR to a pc? with some expensive ripoff pc hardware shit. I only use xlr mics for live performances.

For a pc you would either use condenser mics with stereo minijacks, or a usb microphone, like that big silver one (yeti).

MV was meaningful in that it created ripples when it hit the market. In sales especially if that is of any concern to you. But culturally it was one of the first games on the mobile scene to demonstrate that not everything has to be some free tetris clone with IAP.

Both, optional. Mouse is almost mandatory for PC games, but you want to have support for gamepad too, so add cursor and the usual buttons mapped to keyboard keys (A/B, START/CANCEL at least).

Start with mouse because clicking directly on stuff is much more straight-forward to implement compared to (context-sensitive) menu navigation with keys.

Maybe learn genres? I'm not great with music either but I know I suck. Here's a site that might help: everynoise.com/engenremap.html
Try asking /mu/. Post a few songs that are like what you're looking for (either here or on /mu/), and musicians can give you names for the things you like about them.

Also, someone might just MAKE you some music. They do it for free.

There should be cables going from the ship to the balloon.

If the ship is "docked" on land it should be tied down (or "anchored" for fun) with an opening and a little gangway.

Is this scene I think you can get away with putting it a little further away so you can see more of it.

anchor sounds really fun. Good idea I'll add that!

>tfw never enough time to dev.
Anyone else just too tired to do anything when they come home at 6pm after a hard day of work?
I can only concentrate for like 20 minutes but by that time I have to go to bed already because else I'll only get 5 hours sleep for the next day of work.
>tfw not fulltime crapdev

what do you mean? electronic is not a genre?
I need a site where I can search more detailed, the genre, theme, tempo.

I don't want someone to make music for me. I want to find something already made. Free or paid. I already had a musician, and she is "sick" every time I check on her. I don't have more time to spend.

I just clicked on the second link under music in the OP and the first thing I saw there was exactly what you're asking for.

Ideas guys, I’d like your help.

I’ve just got a new job, which means all that time in the evenings I had to spend on self improvement to get that job, is finally free! Now I can get on and do what I’ve wanted to do for ages, and make some vidya.

The idea I’ve had for a while, is to make a “sports management sim”-like game, akin to things like championship manager. But have it based around running a MMO-PvE guild. While setting up teams to do raid progress is the bulk of the focus, I plan to include a lot of bullshit and drama that you get from a guild. Dealing with lootwhores, the husband/wife combination of players where the wife is just TERRIBLE, but if you drop her, you’ll lose the husband.

So, I’ve got to come up with my own made-up MMO, and I’m looking for some ideas off you guys to add to my own.

Classes – I’d like to branch out a little from just the “Warrior/Mage/priest” types
Stats – Looking for stats not just for the “characters”, but the “person” playing the character. So shit like “persistence” and “initiative”
Traits – Traits are quirks that each of your guildies have, they can be both positive and negative. For instance “Female(Male)” has a chance to bring down the moral of a random Male guildie.

Yeah, familiar feel. I feel like I'm rather in the mood to play some vidya to have some rest for the next day, but I know I should use what little time I have to dev, so instead I end up doing neither and just waste time in /wpsg/'s ylyl threads.

I think we both should put our shit together and sit down to work, even only for half an hour.

Alright, fuck that shit. After realizing that I don't really want a vulnerable web server running at home I made a twitch account, so here's my first pathetic little unity project (followed a tutorial, added score handling myself). Could anybody give it a quick spin to check if it werks? Takes just a few sec. Thanks.
