Yeah I was sort of underwhelmed by both of those. Most of the challenges are kind of boring and I wish they did something more creative with them. Though playing as Marie was cool.

Voiced story mode is the real draw of 2nd Encore content.

Oh man, the undizzy tutorial. Took me almost an hour to get that down, and I've been playing fighting games for years (though SG was my first time really delving into Marvel-style chains).

Really as long as you understand the concepts being explained you can skip the homework assignments any time you get stuck. Can always come back to them later if you want.

Practicing vs people is always more valuable than practicing combos, but you should probably get some basic combos down first. Remember that a BNB combo is something you can pull off consistently, not necessarily something optimal.

Being able to do a guaranteed amount of damage every hit you can get is more important than getting optimal damage from a lucky hit.

You can chain up through IPS stage 4. Bursting isn't possible until stage 5. And you can always keep going for resets, as long as you reset before stage 5.

IPS stages are a little complicated, here's the best I can explain it:

Stage 1: Jump-in, if your combo starts in the air. Otherwise this is skipped.
Stage 2: First ground chain, or second air chain.
Stage 3: Next chain, whatever it is. IPS starts watching your moves now, and Undizzy starts accumulating.
Stage 4: If stage 3 was an air chain, you can do another air chain and that's stage 4. Otherwise this is skipped.
Stage 5: Everything after that. Bursts are possible if you start a chain with a move previously used or when Undizzy is full.

To simplify that a bit, most combos usually look something like:

and very rarely you might see

Honestly even though IPS/Undizzy aren't that complicated, I do think they're easier to understand during gameplay than they are to explain. Since you really get used to the flow of combos after a while.

Like for me, I didn't know all of the IPS Stages by memory, but I just kinda started to know during play when to begin watching my inputs, and what points I wanted to start burning meter or going for a setup.
It doesn't even feel arbitrary. It's like at any point where I feel myself getting too lazy or greedy with my strings I naturally end up doing something that triggers a burst.

I've been setting my alarm to Under the Bridge (removed the intro) and I think it's been helping me wake up earlier. Thanks Ben.

A good BnB is the one that you can pull off consistently imo. Learn a simple one, or part of a complicated one.

Honestly, all of them, however I'd say Cerebella has the easiest execution overall. Universal, high damage, she can take her time hitconfirming, and her combos are pretty short and sweet.

Don't worry about getting super tough combos down, just learn something that'll give you decent damage you can pull off reliably. I'd take that a step further and practice combos off of different hitconfirms - grabs, air knockdowns so you have to save OTG, etc.

What are you on about, Skullgirls has the best training mode out of any fighting game and the super detailed frame data is part of that reason. You think it's not readily available because it's in a settings box?

You can assume most LMH > special > super will work. It's an ABC game.

Everyone has, at minimum, a 3-hit chain from L>M>H. Sometimes you can also chain a punch into a kick of the same strength. At maximum that can be all 6 buttons as LP>LK>MP>MK>HP>HK. More commonly though you'll see 5-hit chains where you can only use one heavy, so LP>LK>MP>MK>H. Some characters may be able to chain more buttons in the air than on the ground. And you can freely skip steps, so LP>HK would be just as valid, but you can't go backwards. Pretty easy to check how many buttons your character gets on the ground and in the air, just hop in training and hit 'em in order.

As for framedata, turn on Advanced Attack Data in Training Mode. Hit the dummy, and you'll see the startup and frame advantage of whatever you just did. This even accounts for meaty setups, midrange projectiles (sometimes, it's a bit odd with projectiles), and anything that could make frame advantage vary since it tells you exactly how the move just hit.

It could just be an option in the settings that you could toggle on and off. Requires minimal work from the devs while being a cool feature to have.

A lot of what makes the animations visually work wouldn't really be helped by extra tweening. Most of the animations would come across either the same in action, or worse.
Just look at ones like Band's cHK or Val's sMP. There's no reason to communicate those actions any smoother, and a lot of the attacks are handled similarly.

If those types of animations were left alone which they should be, then the most "Maximum performance mode" would do is moderately affect a select fraction of the game and possibly introduce issues elsewhere. Why bother? It's not like they'd be implementing this for the benefit of actual players or animators.

I don't see the point of frame data being in the movelist when it's actively displayed in the game while you play, dynamically adjusts based on when moves hit to acknowledge safe spacing, and even includes a handy visual bar that displays total frames and active hitboxes. These in addition to having slow-mo, graph overlay, and hitbox display options as well.

Every tool you need is there. If you want to see the range and recovery of a move from a certain distance, just do the move and let training mode give you the loadout.

In Mortal Kombat when you hit someone with a move you can almost always expect that move to the same + / - value.

In Skullgirls with PBGC and land canceling the + / - values are never consistent which is why you need to let the game crunch it in real time and display it to you.

If you really want to know how + your buttons are, it takes 5 minutes to go into training mode and hit
