I'm not defending it. I said it's around P3's level, which was another localization with problems, and P5's displaying largely the same problems as that game so far. But to address what you've said:
-The dub's a mess. I said that in the exact reply you quoted. The Igor voice filter is a problem, but that's also limited to the dub.

-Most of the main cast's way of speaking is actually fine so far. Yusuke has a couple of wonky lines, and they messed up the poem in his awakening (which would've been near-impossible to keep without rewriting it entirely), but it's only Makoto and Goro that are genuinely worrying right now (Goro more so). As for Ryuji, while things like the usage of words like "effin'/d-bag" instead of their written-out versions sound a bit odd, his overall speaking mannerisms still convey the same tone as his JP lines so far.

-Goro's scenes are one of my main concerns given how much they rely on small details and wording. If they really do end up screwing those up, I'd be one of the first to call them out in detail, just like I've been doing already.

I'm not even planning to buy the localization, I've had the Japanese version for months and would rather save my money for an eventual rerelease or expansion. I'm mostly comparing dialogue so people who do buy it can at least get an idea of what the issues in the localization are like, instead of relying purely on hearsay that may be downplayed or exaggerated.

October 4th in general is a mess, not just for Ken (though he definitely got hit the worst in that scene). I went over that earlier this month here >>171147054 , but the thread's gone from the archive by now, so you'd have to dig up an off-site archive. Short version: lots of tone issues, quite a few missing details, some things toned down (some of the lines relating to Ken's suicidal tendencies and his motivation for revenge, Takaya planning on torturing Shinji if he didn't get an answer), and it all stacks up to make the scenes read very differently in the localization.

In general, though, P3 changed a few character's speech mannerisms/lines enough that it changed how they come across (Junpei and Yukari are the main examples, though others get hit with it in some scenes too), a fair few lines are clunkily translated or leave out details, there's some odd changes (Yukaricchi to Yuka-tan's one of the more innocuous ones), and it all adds up to a localization that ranges from meh to pretty bad. October 4th's just my go-to example because it's such a glaring example of those changes actually causing problems and affecting how western fans react.

Oddly enough, the newer parts in P3P are mostly better-handled from what I've seen, barring things like Ken's romance route for obvious reasons (and even that only changed the more extreme parts, it seems).

...I think I'll have to go over this in detail when I'm more awake. Good news is that the general gist of the scene is intact (and Makoto's speech mannerism's are mostly fine here). Bad news is there's a few lines that seem outright wrong/way too liberal.

Tsukasa's dialogue is headache-inducing, but at least that's the case in both version. Makoto reading out his SNS message is a lot less funny, unfortunately, since she just reads it out normally instead of stumbling over it and stopping in confusion at how he writes a few times.

Yeah, a lot of the problems with P3's localization stick out more if you've looked into the drama CDs or at least the movies, since fan translations generally stick closer to the original dialogue. I'm honestly kind of surprised that not a lot of people seem to be aware of how bad it could get, but as far as I know nobody's done a compilation for the changes so far. (There's a couple better-known ones, like Yukari's behavior or the Yukaricchi > Yuka-tan thing, but a lot of the significant changes seem to be fairly unknown even though it's been almost a decade since the game came out.)

Yeah, the way the cast addresses each other's off in that localization in general. Lots of characters are on first name basis in the localization when they aren't (or at least shouldn't be from the start) in the Japanese version.

Thankfully that's one issue that doesn't seem to have carried over to P5's localization, at least from what I've seen so of it so far.

The inconsistency issue is only during the initial parts of the Hawaii trip so far, and that segment was a lost cause from the start. The last point isn't confirmed yet, though it'd be worth calling out if it does crop up.

Exaggerating the localization's problems will only get people to ignore even valid complaints like mistranslations or noting that a character's speech is genuinely being mishandled in a way that hurts their characterization. Let's not do that.

The last thing we need is another case of the majority waving off any and all localization complaints like what happened with Fire Emblem If or #FE after people fixated so much on minor issues and exaggerations that it drowned out the people pointing out serious problems.

That's fine. The first lines are pretty close, they just replaced "I was able to keep calm" with "I would have panicked" which was the point of the second line. It doesn't cut anything but redundancy out. If she didn't panic, she must have stayed calm. So they combined the first two sentences and it turned out just fine, and original sentence three became localized sentence two. The third one just came out of nowhere.

FE If's localization was an absolute trainwreck. Inconsistent with itself and the one previous game it actually has a direct connection to, more than a few characters that had their personalities and backstories completely, huge chunks of missing dialogue tied to the removed minigame, shoehorned-in jokes that are completely inappropriate for the setting, inconsistent handling (at times hitting genuine censorship levels) of specific subject matter including things that were left intact in previous games (and would've been five given the game's rating), entire conversations that were randomly reduced to jokes... there's probably more I'm forgetting, but it's easily one of the worst localizations I've seen in years.

It's annoying that most of those complaints got swept under a rug, but that's exactly why I'd like to avoid a repeat of that and have people focus on the serious problems instead of blowing things out of proportion.

I'm not really seeing how noting that the localization is mostly serviceable (if clunky, which isn't unusual for this series) but ALSO has some notable problems very similar to a previous entry in the series is being defensive, especially when several of those saying that are the same anons pointing out those problems as they come up.

Nobody's saying the localization is flawless, because it's definitely not. But it's not a complete trainwreck either. It's clunky, they made some weird decisions for certain lines (and things like name romanizations), there's been a few actual errors, at least one character's speech mannerisms are being mishandled (which might turn into a more serious problem later) and another who's been off in some scenes and fine in others - but so far, it's still mostly around the same level as P3's localization.

Sad thing is, I wouldn't even be surprised if they overdo the swearing for that part. Peppering extra swears into the dialogue is one of the more common traps for translators who struggle with tone and run into a character who speaks in a really informal/rough way, and that's basically what Goro's speech is like by that point. Him swearing a fair bit already probably doesn't help.

There's a few reason I'm worried about that set of scenes, and that's definitely one of them.

Kind of, yeah. In this case, it's them making a character sound far too formal in scenes where he's supposed to be speaking casually, when that character changing his speech depending on who he's interacting with is important (especially in the case of the casual speech, since it's almost identical to how he speaks when not putting up an act).

Since it's a consistent issue so far, it's probably the result of them trying to keep the 僕/俺 pronoun change but losing the more important details in his speech in the process. We'll see once someone manages to the later scenes.

The minigame itself was mostly tedious, but the amount of dialogue lost per character as a result of removing it is pretty insane. IIRC, it was originally around 53 lines for all characters but two (some short, others long, with several mentioning details not included elsewhere in the game), all fully voiced. That's a lot of dialogue cut just because some early complaints about the minigame based on misinformation called it creepy.

Treehouse used to be a fairly solid localization studio around the Gamecube era, but they've been getting worse and worse for a while now, and since the NA localizations tend to be the basis for the EU ones, it usually screws up their localizations too. I really wonder what happened behind the scenes to make their localization quality drop so much.

At least Atlus USA doesn't embellish dialogue as much as Treehouse does these days despite that shared similarity. A clunky localization with some errors and tone problems for certain characters is usually still better than one where the original script's been almost entirely rewritten and punched up.

That's pretty likely, yeah. Most people aren't able to compare a translation to the original themselves, so most of the time they go by how a translation sounds to them instead. If it sounds good or manages to be entertaining, they'll often be fine with it, even if you point out that the translation in question is pretty far off from the original.

It's why if you show a random person a translation that's accurate meaning-wise but literal to the point of sounding dry/stilted, and a translation tha sounds nice and snappy but loses a lot of meaning, they'll probably say the latter seems better to them. It's why most find it easy to pick out too-literal translations (like stilted fan translations or machine translations), but likely won't pick up on too-liberal ones.
