I think KOF characters in general have more personality than a lot of other fighting game characters, the dialogues in XIII alone set-up some charcterization that's more recognizable than a lot of SF charcters get over the span of the whole series. I don't know if it's my bias speaking, but I don't get how people (mainly those who don't play SNK games) would say KoF/SNK characters are bland/have no personality. I mean not only are they depicted doing fighting stuff, but they are also depicted doing other things like real life situations, wearing regular clothes rather than just their fight clothes, hanging out or doing day to day stuff in official art by the way. It makes them seem more human and thus more relateable. Even their profiles seem a little more fleshed out when compared to other fighting game characters that I've seen. In regards to other fighting games I normally only see those characters striking a fighting pose or in their fighting clothes and rarely see them doing well normal stuff. Also when people say they're bland or lack personality what do people mean? like their clothes, do they want people in just gis or fighting attire or outfits with like 20 fucking belts on them or do they want some huge edgelords or characters with one obvious trait? I know some SNK characters seem to wear seemingly regular clothes, but from my point of view that just makes them look like people rather than just another character. If I'm wrong could someone explain it to me?

It really is the fact that most of them are wearing regular clothes. A lot of people would rather have visually striking and loud designs than subdued and relatable/realistic ones- at least at first. People wants their characters to look very abnormal and unusual in a way that SF's national stereotype theme nails but when you get down to it, KOF characters dress like normal people would which isn't exciting but it's more tasteful, fashionable and realistic and it exudes more personality through nuance. This is also why a lot of non-fg people dislike Third Strike at first glance, their designs were more "bland"/"normal" than earlier Streeet Fighter characters. It's a taste maturation thing.

Ryu is probably the shittiest/best example you can get with being the most bland and uninteresting character ever. It's sort of a shame really to see those Watchmojo fucks put him as the number one fighting game character.

Kyo at lease has his relatable backstory as a juveinile delinquent kid who never did anything right and wanted to be noticed for being strong, which is why he acts so down right cocky in his win quotes. Even Ragna, who is pure edginess has a more relatable personality than Ryu.

This. Ryu is the most generic fighting game protagonist. You can tell Capcom knew this and that's why they introduced the dumb Satsui no Hado plot with him. They had no idea what to do.

I remember my Street Fighter friend getting pretty mad when I told them I thought Ryu was boring and Ryo was a better take on the character. Ryo has a family, a love interest, and a family business to give him some character depth. All Ryu has going for him is "muh fist" and "muh dark hado".

Hopefully one day. I like KoF and all, but it isn't even my favorite SNK series. Might have to wait though as the next game they'll make will probably be a new Samurai Shodown or a MotW sequel (the devs feel obliged to make it since people seemingly keep asking for it). Personally I'd rather another Real Bout or a prequel that ties in the AoF and FF games. I'd be fine with a SS game too or even a new World Heroes. I'd want them to make more than just mobile and fighting games hough, Oda once asked how people would feel if the next AoF game were to be a beat them up. To me that sounds great, but I don't know if people would be to keen on it. They've made rhythm games before, but I'm not sure how some "hardcore fans" would feel about that. I mean some of them completely shat on XIV because of no sprites and totally shat on Sylvie too. RPGs not on mobile could be another thing.
