Sure.
>Playing similar games
Sure, but make sure you are actually paying attention to what the game does right. Treat it as if you actually had a job at a game studio: would you be playing games on company time, or your own? It depends. You'd definitely be searching for reference on company time.

Noob question.
I'm a programmer and want to get into game deving. I'm good in Java so first, is it a good langage for it ? I know you can do pretty mmuch everything with every langage but since Unity and Unreal use C# and C, it's obvious that using one of them would be a better solution. Wich brings me to my second question, wich level you should attain to make the best use of these engines? I'm used to make some basic application and web apps so the methodology isn't the same as doing a game (wich I never even tried).

Are there some good books on learning how to make a game like the right way of thinking, structuring and managing your game projects ?

I consider making games in 2 stages. first is design stage which is any research and design of the game needed. Then the most important part is the actual development stage. This is where you actually get something that brings you closer to finishing your project.

Today I got picking up and putting down rocks to work. It's relatively simple, but it does work. But I can also use some tuning. Because the game insists on the rock being aligned to the grid, it might be put down too far away to be immediately picked up again. This is so it's never accidentally set on top of the player. I may just have to extend the pick up range.

I'm developing a turn-based 2d rpg. My inspirations are FF4, FFX, and Wii Punchout. I intend to allow the player to adjust the way the game is presented. Do you want it to be ATB ala FF4, or CTB ala FFX? Flip a switch in the options menu. I have the back-end working already for this. Are you tired of facing the group of 3 kobolds and 1 Ogre you keep running into? Turn off repeat encounters, and you'll only encounter battles particular battles once.

I'm thinking of making a youtube series about my game to build an audience. It would detail my thoughts on the genre, the features of my game and behind the scenes development details.

Depends on the sort of mechanics you want to add. But basic player movement and attacking is fairly easy. The enemies shouldn't be much harder. The real hard part is making the art for it all.

Reminder that soundcloud also has a bunch of music that you can use commercially.

Maybe it should also be in the OP?
>>
>>172576023
Yes, the ATB to CTB switch does cause balancing issues. Obviously, any time wasted not picking a move in the ATB would be considered a loss when compared to using the CTB. The ATB does have a wait timer the player can customize by choosing how many frames to wait up when someone's turn comes up. By default it pauses for about 2-3 seconds when a characters turn comes up, after that you're burning time.

Thanks for the reply
>>
>>172576913
It's not a game I said.
>>
>>172577000
Yeah, should be possible. Try making a basic prototype first, just the player and one enemy. If you get stuck on anything look things up, ask questions, try to learn. Then expand it into more enemies and more player attacks.

Interactive animations/scenes are still planned.

and there's only one more element to nail down for the 2nd map, the stained glass.

unsurprisingly it hasn't been easy to land on a style that accurately conveys stained glass windows. the artist did the topmost one with lazy photoshop filters, which doesn't read well, so I went and did programmer art of the left one to see if manual shard creation was better.

i know fuck-all about shapes and contours though, so it's pretty ugly, but perhaps the method might work if done by an actual artist
>>
>>172579784

I'd recommend... not having plot twists.

Plot twists are usually pretty divisive. They're either loved or hated. If your plot twist is obvious and predictable, it has no impact. If it's not obvious, it can feel totally irrelevant and out of left field (like Braid, for instance).

The biggest driving force in any story will always be characters. Likeable and enjoyable characters will drive a story.

Why do you remember Star Wars? It's the characters. The actual "plot" of Star Wars is basic as heck. You remember Luke, you remember Han Solo.

Start with the characters. Always. Then build the story around them.

when i think of stained glass i usually think of more saturated colors like pic related. do you think i should pursue this level of saturation for this map >>172580129 even though the general color balance is red/grey?
>>
>>172580026

How you learn it?

Just consuming other media like movies/books/games to "get inspired" doesn't do it for me and my story telling imagination or whatever you want to call it hasn't gotten better.
>>
>>172580129
>>and there's only one more element to nail down for the 2nd map
I really hope you dont think minus the stained glass, that the room is in anyway production ready.

It looks like iteration 2-3 out of 10-20
>>
>>172580325
Your fetishes.
Make sure to put your fetishes into your game (in a sfw manner of course) to create a generation of kids with your fetish.

Like for instance, having a male character being turned into a girl and possibly having that character hypnotized to do something evil.

or having vore scenes.
>>
>>172580407
It's like anything man. Write a story.

Then pass it around, get criticism. Take the criticism, rewrite it, or try something new.

It's all about repetition and iteration. In all things.

>unforeseeable plot twists
this is automatically bad writing, plot is like a good game where each previous action has consequences, plot twists are the confluence of these various actions into an event. they are unexpected not because they are unforeseeable but because there were many alternative foreseeable outcomes that viewer expected more or the viewer missed/ignored important clues that related to the outcome.
easily one of the most important aspects of satisfying storytelling is foreshadowing - learn it, live it, love it.

I told you already. Just because it LOOKS like I'm at the point where I'm able to do that, that isn't actually the case. The scripting and structures that need to be in place for the other supers isn't there yet. It is not as simple as just make animation put in gaem.

The enemy AI needs work before I can put in more supers purely because those supers require the AI be able to react and respond to them in order for me to script them. Chill yo butt. They're coming, but these things take time.

I was getting frustrated with making new player animations so I began working on redesigning most of the GUI, starting with the title screen. The only way you could ever improve on creative writing, is by...reading books. You have to read and expand your mind to different types of stories, if all you have in your mind is other video games to use as resources and inspiration then your game will just be like all other video games stories, aka trash. Read some books m8. And I don't mean YA/50 shades of/stephen king type garbage either.

I understand the purist mentality. But a sane middle-ground is to use already available purpose-specific libraries and wrap around them. Then eventually phase them out.

Or at the very, very least, just please use your own gl/vulkan solution. You REALLY dont want to deal with this:

>>

It's not a meme, it's a C++ library meant for game development that's commonly used. By a lot of people, I don't understand why it's used though.
>>
>>172587834
You need Win32 or your platform's equivalent to use OpenGL or Vulkan (well, not Vulkan strictly speaking but games aren't headless), but there are libraries like GLFW that wrap it.

>>172587990
Yeah but I've never heard of it before and it keeps getting mentioned.
>>
>>172587369
>>172587028
Possible, sure. Most programmers first games are command line based. But the moment you start using a platforms API, you're already outside the "original language." Hell, you're arguably outside the original language just using the standard.

There is no reason to not use a library that simplifies that shit. C++ was build for libraries. And it will take much less time to learn something like SFML than a bunch of lower level, platform specific programming.

I'm trying to do animal crossing style village generation in unity. A lot of the tutorials I find seem to be dealing with generating a bunch of game object which I'm concerned will cause performance problems later on down the line.

If anybody could shoot some relevant reading or info about what I should be looking at I'd be really appreciative.

No, it basically prints the current value to the screen AND THEN ADDS TO IT BY ONE, SEE "Five++"? That's incrementation. It then checks to see if Five = 10 now, if it doesn't, it prints the new value and increments it again. It does this until it is 10, which afterward it stops counting up and prints "we are done".

You can implement scene graphs in a cache-friendly way. All you do is have all the nodes in an array, where children come after their parents. You then iterate through the array once to do all your transformations, and the children can depend on their transformed parents since you're guaranteed to have processed them already.

Been debating with myself for the past couple of days over it but it looks like I am actually going to do it. Adding third (last) playable moth with her own shot type and mechanics (for fun and variety). It works out because now I have a Novice, Intermediate and Advanced character selection. Now to actually work on her mechanics and animations.

Since she is the boss of the intro stage though I will need to give her a different one to fight and her story will have a different tone to it than Lore and Sana

Hey, it took a while to get the package exported. So I'm combining meshes in a way that completely avoids instantiating a new GameObject for each mesh that you want to combine, since I needed to create thousands of little meshes right when the game started. In the unity manual there is a reference for the easier way, which will automatically create a CombineInstance from your GameObject.

I would estimate that about 90% of the feedback I received was pretty negative, and not just about things like bugs or difficulty that I could tweak, but about the gameplay itself not being fun or interesting, and a heap of people complaining about the elements that make the game what it is - inventory management, exploration, puzzles, etc.

It's not my first rodeo with Demo Day. Dungeon Break was criticized heavily but about things I could fix - balancing, pacing, etc. - but not many people who disliked the concept itself and the core gameplay.

Goes to show why CAPCOM switched to more action-oriented games. That being said, I'm not giving up on it. I'm pretty happy with the atmosphere, storyline, and artwork myself, but clearly I needed to take a step back and rethink the gameplay. Lacking motivation isn't the same as trashing the project. I think that it could be successful and just as atmospheric as a 3D game, and a game with slower paced gameplay and simpler combat would give me an opportunity to learn Unity better.

>>172600956
The funny thing is that I don't like the animation, but it stayed as a placeholder.
If you mean about the code, it is a little more complex than what I want: Check what animation the animator is playing and its play time, use that to check at an AnimationCurve previously defined and indexed with a Dictionary with the animation being played as the key to see how much movement do you want to apply to the character and the move the character motor with that (so during that time it is not using the input from the user but that curve)

It is saying you need to define what phy_position _x is first before changing it. I suppose make phys_position_x=player.x(or 0, I don't know how GM:S2 works sorry). But it just means you are trying to change a thing that doesn't exist so you need to give it a baseline to start with first.

I figured as much but he doesn't do it in the video and I've literally never coded before, so I don't know what to do to fix this.
Hence why my question was should I just find a copy of 1.4 and use that instead.

>>
>>172604089
>>172604261
Those are painful "screenshots" (click the windows button and type in "snipping tool" next time).

>>172604418 is kind of right but phy_position_x is a built-in variable so I don't know why it wouldn't have a value (I've never used the built-in physics before myself). The documentation does say this:
"Please note that the physics world may present errors when instances are moved by directly setting this variable as it will interrupt the continuous simulation."
http://docs.yoyogames.com/source/dadiospice/002_reference/physics/physics%20variables/phy_position_x.html

So maybe you're not supposed to be modifying the value directly for whatever reason?

In any case you should refer to the documentation as much as possible. I google these things constantly.

Please god I hope you're baitin'. This is too perfect a storm of supreme ineptitude
>>
>>172604560
>>172604782
True actually. In the example they give a new variable the value of phy_position_x (in it's case xx).
So what you could do is follow suit. Make xx=phy_position_x somewhere (before your code, maybe even in the step event so it keeps resetting to the origin of the sprite/player after it moves) and then modify xx as you need (xx-=4)

Something I want to do at some point in my life, is make a normal 3rd person game with humanoid models, with different LODs and stuff, except at the lowest possible LOD every human model is a robot/machine/ugly broken doll and the game meaning is entirely different when played as such.

Only poorfags will find this, but occasionally normal players might catch a glimpse of the hellish world underneath the surface when looking over large distances or when their PC is slowing down for reasons.

I'm well aware that it'll be on the internet first thing in the morning, but I'm legitimately curious how long it'd take for people to find out.

Ue4. Blueprints are great.

GM is pretty easy because it lacks pretty much any higher coding concepts, the language is not bad but you might have to do some silly workarounds to do what other engines already have built-in.
>>
>>172573537
Or you can make the player automatically move to the space in front of where the rock will land. That will also prevent the inconsistent drop distances.

Yea, tell me about it. Did you ever tried to write anything in UE4 using c++ only? It FORCES you to use blueprints for the most common actions that you would rather write in two lines of code. Not to mention it have NO official valid means to write your custom shader - you are just not supposed to do so. As you not supposed to write in code your own AI, your own camera movement, your own mesh format and so on.

>>
>>172639851
It's bretty good and relatively new, there are a few bugs but it's stable enough for a full game and it's getting a big update in a few months.
>>
>>172627783
game maker is not especially "easier" than other engines, it's just that most faggots are making shitty platformers and other indie meme genres that GM specifically enables. if you actually come up with your own idea for a game instead of using tropes, it can actually be harder to make a game in GM because you're fighting against the fucktardedness of an engine that wants to steer you a certain way while it's not even driving that good in the first place.

daily reminder if you think GM is easy it's because you've never actually tried to make your own game and "coded" a platformer/sidescroller/whatever
>>
>>172640023
Theres a lot of shit that I hate in gamemaker.

I would love some "true" OOP practices just because it works easier. I really hate the scripting you have to do vs. actual coding.

But that being said, theres a reason that Gamemaker and Unity are so prevalent. It's a lot easier to get something out there on them.
>>
>>172640023
It's pretty easy even for more unusual genres mostly because you don't really have many choices in how to program something and the language and docs are very concise.

t. made a strategy game in GM
>>
>>172640227
>It's a lot easier to get something out there on them.

If you're using the main features to make a trope game like most people do, then yes. If you're not, now you have to spend time learning to do things "the game maker way" instead of doing them the non-retarded way, so basically it's the same effort for a lesser gain.

Let's say I have two bullets that move and use collision shapes every frame, the problem is that I want them to hit each other too appropriately based on their speeds.

How do I calculate if an intersection between collision shapes actually results in a hit like pic related? The numbers show the distance traveled in that frame and the orange arrows are the collision shapes.

I figured that I could move the bullets to the intersection distance percentage from the farthest bullet and then check if there's a collision.
So for example:

B1 moves 100 pixels per turn
B2 moves 50 pixels per turn

Intersection happens at pixel 75 from B1 and pixel 25 from B2

75 is 75% of 100
25 is 50% of 50
Intersection from B1 is farther away so it wins the comparison
Now I move both bullets to 75% of their travel distance and check collisions
B1 to pixel 75
B2 to pixel 37.5

If no collision happens, move both bullets to their final positions.

It makes sense in my head but I'm wondering if I missed something or if there's a more elegant way to do it.

I'm sorry if this makes no sense.

When checking two sections intersection, you will get a value between 0 and 1 (in case of having intersection) which points you to where the intersection lies on you section. The most I can bring to the table is minor things. I'm pretty good and have experience in organizing and managing projects, I (like everyone else) feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what makes games good and how to structure development, and I want to learn how to program.

To clarify, I'm not interested in jumping into a big project to start off, and I'm not kidding myself by thinking I'd be a huge use with 1337 management skillz. I want to just work on a gamejam with some people, figure shit out and not have gamedev be a federal fucking issue.

Though I suspect they just did it as a UE4 tech demo, "it's a responsive FPS in what is technically a huge world" type thing

Some more menu progress. Instead of going into the little hub room like before, now you have the menu to select various things. Still a ways to go, but this refactoring feels nice.

Players are going to be focused on shoot each other, they wont be seeing the environment much.

A skybox is 6 images that create a cube to create a sky and maybe mountains and stuff. You can't move around within a skybox like that image was showing.

Why make a skybox in another program when you can do it in engine? Then you don't need to worry about warping artifacts or getting it to fit with the rest of the scene with lighting and such, and you can make it dynamic.
