I admit that, while it's not graphically the best and sometimes is clunky, it still feels good enough, and the graphics aren't that bad - you still get a lot of good detail, and the gameplay as a whole is worth whatever sacrifice in mere looks. You can get a lot more out of a fun siege than one that simply looks good.

Their big flaw is that they're a bunch of proud snobs. Even if gunpowder was actually useful to them - and it's doubtful that it is, because they are so skilled with bows and magic and have dragons, whereas gunpowder is still in the 'inaccurate matchlock' stage - they wouldn't adopt it, because they'd think their ways are the best ways. Sort of like dwarves, but the dwarves at least invent things themselves sometimes. The elves never learn any lessons from anyone else - they always assume that they're the teachers.

Bretonnia's excuse is that they think that gunpowder isn't chivalrous - but they still use cannons on their ships, and in older lore they actually made use of gunpowder in crude bombards and cannons.

Peasants really only revolt when the taxes are too high, or they're starving, or they're starving because the taxes are too high. At that point, it barely matters that death is guaranteed - better to die fighting than to just give in. And occasionally peasants are even encouraged to revolt, if their lord is revealed to be a servant of Chaos or something.

It's never outright said, but I'm guessing the main reason peasants don't use gunpowder is that Bretonnia doesn't really make use of firearms - there's almost no one to make the guns and teach peasants how to use them. A musket might be relatively simple, but a cannon would need a more skilled engineer. And one of the shitty things about Bretonnian lore is how often things like who the engineers and architects and such are. This is very well fluffed out in the Empire and the Dwarves, but in Bretonnia you barely know what exists outside of vague ideas about blacksmiths and merchants.

It's actually because High Elven archer's are vastly more effective than your average rifleman. High Elven compound bows are heavily enchanted and a skilled archer can fire many times faster than primitive guns.

The advantage of early guns is that they allowed people to be very effective at killing people with little training, and so you could march people en masse.

Pro tip - cough up the money for the Men-at-Arms with shields. I know Leoun starts with some, but the ones without are never, ever worth it. Even peasant mobs are questionable as anything other than cannon fodder, even with some love and care, but at least they're super cheap.

Shields make them far more survivable - not just against arrow fire, but in most combat situations. Sometimes I wonder why CA even put the shieldless variants in the game - it just gives the impression Bretonnia has more infantry than it actually does.

There's something about the AI in TWW that makes them turtle like mad and never attack settlements unless they have a massive advantage; to the point of it being meaningless to actually fight the battle.

I don't understand. You're not supposed to use cavalry in this game for long engagements or to hold the line. You charge, you wait a few seconds for them to do their damage in melee, and then you cycle them out to charge again. This works best in support of your peasants, who act as an anvil for your hammer, and with a grail reliquae to keep them fighting.

If you look at Bretonnia...I'm not saying it couldn't get shitty, but Leoun is a pretty damn good king - French peasants are happy when the Roi is strong, even if things suck. And Bretonnia overall has a pretty stable, if very agricultural, economy, and there's no sign of any famine coming. They also don't have any Enlightenment thinkers.

Yeah you're definitely right about most of those things.

One thing has to be said about Bretonnia though; their culture isn't just backwards, it's entirely based on the moment. The nobles, the peasants, the rich peasants; they all live their life today and don't really think about the future. An example used is that peasants won't save up food for a nice feast over the year; they'll just feast right after the harvest and then eat fuckall for the rest of the year.

This is the damage an extended siege can do to the stack within. Every unit was at full or almost full strength ~5 turns ago, and now they're down significantly. I'm considering starving them out, because I do not want to fuck with the ballista towers.

I have been waiting for these two guys to get to Brittany for fucking years. First I wanted to let them study, so they could get OP bonuses like +1 morale and +1 HP and +movement. That took 4 turns. Then I had to build an army and a navy, then I had to get them up there.

Their fleet got BLOWN the FUCK out by massive, marauding English fleets protecting the Breton coastline, meaning I have to send them ALL the way back to pick up more ships so my 20 turn investment doesn't explode in my fucking face

That shit isn't even close, a few days ago I got into a scrap against two full Warriors of Chaos stacks as Grimgor with a full stack and WAAGH! support, in a tunnel. They attacked the WAAGH!, and I ended up joining the battle right behind their main force, while their reinforcements appeared on the other side of the map, right next to the WAAGH! I didn't have a lot of black orcs, and faced off against Archaon with a giants and almost nothing but melee infantry and Chaos Knights, and very little room for archers. So we squared off against one full stack of Chaos each, on each side of the map. I've barely won after a hard struggle, with giants and Archaon dead, right as that huge faggot Sigvald reaches me with what's left of his troops after killing off the WAAAGH!. I take further losses, only Mega Evolution Grimgor gives me a chance, things are looking alright. Then four fucking Hellcannons get within range from the other side of the map and start shooting my few remaining troops to shit. Remaining close enemies rout, start legging it for the Hellcannons on short greenskin infantry legs, routing enemies return in small waves. At the end, before Grimgor reaches the Hellcannons with only a small amount of health left, my remaining troops are him, half a Goblin Thrower crew that I actually had to use for melee after the thrower ran out of ammo, and a barely living goblin shaman who ran out of magic long before Sigvald's wave. So from two full stacks engaging one another, Grimgor, a low level goblin shaman, and a handful of artillery crew goblins walk away victoriously. That was a Pyrrhic victory.

I admit, my knowledge is more general and probably in some senses about a century off. But I think it's interesting to make the comparison.

It is kind of weird, since you'd think Bretonnians would channel into 'I want my life to be good now' and prompt more revolutions. It is an interesting mindset that helps make them distinct from the Empire in some ways, but it leaves a lot of questions hanging as to what they're hoping to achieve in the now, if not for the future. At least in real history, peasants were slowly acquiring land from French nobles who were willing to sell, since money meant more to them than land did, and peasants would probably still work for them anyway - so peasants had something to work for and gather up over years or even generations, in a process that was somewhat naturally stifled by slowly rising land prices around the time. I think it would be a fun thing to include for Bretonnia, especially when there's constant Orc and Beastmen threats - a peasant could accumulate a fair amount of land, but be forced to start over after the whole village is ravaged and new peasants are brought in at random to resettle the place and the land is split up by need.

Dark Elves have had a relationship with Slaanesh particuarly. Morthrai would love to get some of those Warp juice to power up her magic, and she's actually sent covens off to Lustria in the past to use the ruins to tap into shit. Some of them are part of Slaaneshi cults, and I imagine Khorne might twist those who serve Khaine.

As a whole, they do hate Chaos - the Hung are constantly raiding them in the north, and they have to compete with Norse warships for slaving. But there's a back and forth that can allow some allying, especially against a common enemy, or they might just see daemons and servants of Chaos as things to be helped and manipulated in order to damage their enemies.

Because Turin, while good at the game doesn't know shit about the setting which is fine, not everyone needs to be a nerd about it. But that guy he tried to lore-crutch off of was really bad and that vid was pretty terrible for it.

Gotta stick with MilkandCookies despite him calling us names. The Inept General make very interesting lore videos but its a lot of content to go through but it is well done. Even a damn Nordland lore video is almost a half hour meanwhile Mousillon, the Moot are just shy an hour and the Middenland is a full 1:20:00 of a ton of stuff. Little update on my campaign

Sent 7 full legions to invade Gallic Iberia and Greater Germany, 1 legion to take the last Carthaginian stronghold, and 2 legions to take central Iberia

1 legion pushed into Macedonia and took Campus Scythii which was transferred over to the Sarmatians to keep relations good

2 legions pushed through the mountains to Seleucia but were forced to retreat after almost being surrounded

1 legion successfully took Tarsus but took 20% casualties and is now being besieged by 2 seleucid armies

Faction leader Tiberius Laevinus is taking Salamis with 2 legions

In the south, the Seleucids tried to besiege and take Alexandria, Memphis, and Ptolemais Hormos and were pushed back and destroyed, but all 3 cities and generals there have the plague, only 1 legion left in this area but a 2nd is sailing from Italy to reinforce

Well it was easy as shit to win.

Pretty Pyrrhic but there was no point in the battle where I thought I could actually lose.

It was an annoying battle though because the AI thought they had the advantage so they did stupid shit like chasing round my pyromancer with spearmen whilst my shaggoths are fucking up their backline.

I was banking on them clumping round my monsters but they just acted like they weren't there because they had such low hp.

It was confusing though because it was probably the first battle where the defenders charged me even though they had the artillery advantage.

I honestly didn't see the point of the Uar Foot Archers in the hun roster until I began my conquest of germania, every minor settlement has at least 2-3 200 range archers for whatever fucking reason and its a lot easier to take them out w/ the foot archers than potentially sending cav into towers/spears. The armor helps them take fire while moving into range. Hunnic Horseman/Hunnic Devil Cav/Nokkors all have axes instead of spears, which seems like a negative at first, but then you realize all hunnic cav units have access to 3 precursor arrow shots w/ 360 degree firing arcs as well as flaming arrows, which allows you to do some cheeky skirmishing before going into melee if need be. I went with the hunnic lancers instead of the noble steppe cataphracts for no real reason, the speed is good enough to make up for the lost mass. Onagers are necessary throughout the entire campaign for removing walls and allowing instant sieges.

As cool as it would be to do an all-cav army, I hate the way the all cav battles play out and sieges become nightmares, so I decided to have foot troops in my armies. Early game I used tribespeople/german troops levied from your client states, and then I moved on to the axe/javelin wielding steppe warriors, who are great. Once I could afford uars I went to those for that god-tier khanda damage. I used spears in armies when facing Sassanids/Franks/Desert Tribes to screen my Uars and protect them from francisca/frontal cav charges. I didn't actually ever use scirii though, as they seemed too expensive and took 2 turns to recruit.

towards the beginning of the campaign I got a lot of money from the ere in the form of tribute/payments for wars against other barbars, and eventually they offered a defensive alliance, which I took so I could replenish faster in my wars vs the Sassanids - they stayed defensive allies to the end, even helping me remove the himyar at one point. I wish attila would let you see just how much money you received in diplomatic exchanges throughout the entire campaign, as I'm sure I got a fuckhuge amount from the romans

also interesting, and the main reason I never backstabbed the ERE - I never got the diplo penalty for trespassing despite parking multiple hordes in their territories

here is a simple map of the way my hordes moved throughout the campaign as best as I can remember

>black
The horde Uldin, your faction leader starts out with - started out by fucking with the alans, ostrogoths, and visigoths who had settled in and around thracia - then turned back north to deal with the slavs who declared war on us. After he died it sat in Greuthungian/ERE lands building up until later, when it became purple.

>Red
The Scourge of the Steppes - Initially led by Uldin's son and heir Kuridak, it was my best army in the campaign, although Attila's was catching up. After getting a defensive alliance from the ERE, it went through anatolia btfoing emergent rebels for money from the ere, and razed a lot of rising empires to the ground. Went all the way into egypt before turning around when the Sassanids declared war, and then went through palestine/Arabia magna straight to Ctesiphon, razing it with help from the green horde to the north. Went all the way to persis and destroyed the sassanids before jumping into arabia, but by then ere had dealt with the himyar, and I didn't want to fight them due to their replenishment-freezing trait. Then wandered all the way to libya, where they spent a long time raiding to fulfill the raiding income requirements for victory. Later would go through north africa, removing the garamantians and later the franks with the backing of the gaetulians (defensive allies), before island hopping in an effort to deal with the last frankish holdouts/the newly settled anteans in italia

>Green
Initially an econ horde for the beginning of the game, was re-purposed when war began with the Sassanids, and helped out in armenia/caucasia with the war there. Attila received command of this horde when he turned 18, and turned it around to declare war on Abasagia in sarmatia asiatica, and then began marching towards the lugians in hercynia/pannonia/dalmatia, who were the strongest barbarian faction at that point

In the war with the Lugians, I ended up fighting what might be the greatest battle I have ever had in all of my time playing total war (blue x on the previous map). The Lugians had sent their entire military to deal with my incursion from the east, and in response I pulled the black horde back across the mountains in dacia to hide behind a river, while attila's came back from the sassanid campaign to reinforce. Almost 8000 Lugians tried to cross the river to engage Attila's force, thinking they would easily outnumber and destroy him, but were decisively routed with minimal hunnic casualties after Attila himself led a breakout maneuver with his limited infantry that left the lugian army that was crossing the banks cut off from their reinforcing missile troops, and at the mercy of the hunnic horse archers, causing a mass rout

Attila's army (green) went on a rampage through europe after that battle, carving a path of destruction through former roman lands, and completely wiping out the lugians, as well as many other tribes in the process. He detoured into Italia and burned it and syracuse to the ground, before heading into spain and dismantling the iberian kingdoms of the franks and jutes. With his work done in Spain, he headed back up towards germania, dealing with the Gallic Roman Successor state in aquitania and destroying the last holding of the angles before the campaign was won.

Formerly uldin's horde, the purple army split off from attila before he entered italy, and did the most destruction in gaul and germania, even getting close to Jutland and the viking kingdoms before the end of the campaign. This army had more infantry than any others, with an additional 4x units of bosphoran infantry supporting the uar foot warriors, which was necessary vs the foot heavy saxon/germanic/scandinavian armies of the north. Before this army went north, the saxons were the strongest kingdom in the game. At the time I won the campaign, the only saxon settlement left was one city in frisia and a newly recolonized ruin in lugdunesis.

quick look at politics. W/ huns you are going to have a fucking huge family tree thanks to all the guys you start out with. Towards the end I just stopped caring about it. I played w/ a mod that changes the offices to be more like AoC, where they are appointments for life which is extremely useful for the hunnic offices of grand despoiler (global upkeep reduction/+ sacking/raiding income) and glorious subjugator (+ global horde growth). Since I only had 3 military armies for most of the campaign, the 2 generals who weren't my faction leader got the grand despoiler offices, to reduce unit upkeep/increase income from sacking. Kan has a great -4 to enemy morale in a region, which stacks well w/ the morale penalties from general skills/army traditions, but the income is too good to pass up.

I initially ignored agents, but they are an absolute must in any long-term horde campaign. Since agents don't get the -50% success chance debuff after a successful assassination, you can go to town on all the guys the ai sends your way

Campaign was fun, but got very tedious towards the end. There are only so many identical settlements you can burn to the ground before you get bored.

Would CA ever try to include regions that would have factions without models or artwork?

I can imagine they might skip on the Tomb Kings entirely, just because they wouldn't have the means to make Southland humans or a good Araby roster. Albion would probably never get anything, and even if Cathay, Nippon or Ind were feasible, they would probably get cut for the same reasons.

Then again, they've included Kislev, which clearly has its own army and models, as an Empire clone.

Araby has a Warmaster line, Southlanders don't have any organized civilization outside of tribes, and the rest of the Southlands are populated by Greenskins and a few Lizardman cities.

Cathay has a lot of fluff from WHRP and the Throne of Chaos book. Nippon/Yamato has units from the first three editions of tabletop and the lost Tetsubo WHRP book that could still be used.

There's enough to work most of these races and factions a la new Bretonnia, but it's doubtful that they'll bother.

Geographically I think its Tlaxtan viewed from the north coast as in the distance that is the Spine of Sorek that goes all the way down Lustria. It's insane how large Lustria is ingame. Makes me hyped for how big Naggaroth and Ulthuan will be.

At this point of technology, a good archer will always trump a good handgunner in rate of fire and range, maybe even accuracy. Muskets, however, were much easier to use as it didn't require much training or fitness. The lifespan of elves and their magic means that they will never run out of good archers.

As for artillery, they have magic and dragons. You also have to remember that primitive cannon had a tendency to explode or maim their crew more often than a wizard miscasts AFAIK.

Rat Poison technology indicates that Skaven Corruption or maybe Plague will be in game. That one will probably cause Skaven rebels to appear.

If I had to make a guess Skavenblight's attrition values will be really high, higher than those of Athel Loren. Skaven agents will run around the map from turn one spreading plague and corruption and assassinating your guys.

Exactly. CA just bought a new studio for their new projects. Warhammer has clearly been a bigger success for them, than they expected. They were saying how it was a major financial risk to the company and the future of the franchise as a fantasy total war hadn't been done outside of some excellent fan mods.

Next historical total war just entered full production last month after a 12 month pre production phase so a 2019 release is likely with a tease/reveal later next year.
