I haven't played this game since Lissandra was added but I've been thinking about playing it a bit again lately.

I have absolutely no idea what everything is anymore, every item and champion and even the entire map is completely different. When I try to learn by playing normal games I get shat on because I was diamond before I stopped playing so my mmr is still pretty high.

How can I get back into LoL without ruining the game for my team every match?

One anon brought it up earlier but there's a geniune design conundrum that Riot's going to have to address with Morde's VGU.

It's clear when they updated Morde's skills to have a less metallic gritty feel they wanted to push him more to the spooky light blue hue aesthetic the Shadow Isles has. I'm afraid if they continue down that track then he'll kinda step on the toes of Yorick.

I think riots sort of getting in a story where each champ is in their own snippet of the world, different power levels and little stories that make them feel alive

"Legends" in their own world so if they were to travel around anyone they would meet would know about them and while compared to each other there are significant "this guy is more legendary than this guy" comparisons, out in their own world every single champ in the league would be stronger than any other being in the world outside of NON-game depicted legends (nakaburos, other darkin, the watchers)

and then summoners rift and other maps are just areas where you can see your favs in action while not truly depicting their power levels (A.Sol being damaged by Caitlyns gun)

personally I like it rather than trying to tie in summoners rift with the lore while pretending like Malphite, A. Sol, Cho Gath just DECIDED to be small for the day on the rift

lets them be more open with the world and interactions between the champs

The meta of top lane is basically a matchup rock-paper-scissors of bullies-counters-farmers. This isn't exact but it encompasses the general principles of the most common strategies.

Bullies - Darius, Renekton, Riven, Tryndamere. These (melee) champions hit a massive power spike no later than 6 that lets them get kills in lane almost every single game. They then snowball their advantage by either putting massive pressure on towers or roaming to kill other lanes too. They are powerful enough to destroy farmers but can rarely find opportunities to get their damage off on counterpicks.

Counters - Teemo, Swain, Quinn, Gangplank, Kennen. These (mostly ranged) champions can farm minions and harass from safety and tend to be atypical for the team comp. They can outrange bullies to either farm and outscale or harass and push the bullies out of lane (not all are hypercarries and not all plan to win lane). Even though some of them scale very well, going even in lane with a farmer is better for the farmer since their team will have a better composition.

Farmers - Nasus, Dr. Mundo, Shen, Maokai. These (mostly melee) champions come out of the gate and tend to lose 1v1 duels against almost anyone, but are pretty resistant to occasional harass due to tankiness and/or regen. Some of them do scale well with farm into 1v1 machines, but what most of them really scale with is time as the clock starts ticking towards teamfights and their utility nullifies any gold advantage the enemy may have acquired. Bullies will engage on them every chance they get and force a duel that the bully will win. While counters can get damage in when a farmer comes in to cs, the counters usually can't go deep enough to actually outdo the farmer's regen and push them out of lane, and the farmer will tend to be more useful in ganks and eventually teamfights.
