You are right, but the original poster is just doing the usual "artist looking for programmer" baiting routine.

It goes like this:
- Artist looking for programmer
- Here I am! Do you have any reference/ideas?
- First please, tell me what tools do you use for game making
- I use GM/Löve/Unity/Unreal/Custom/Whatever
- Ah, I see, sorry, but not interested

I've been a longtime lurker on this general and I'm finally coming close to finishing my first game. It's a android app called Bricktionary where it's similar to Pictionary where one user is the artist and other players have to guess the word they are representing but rather than being able to draw, the artist has to manipulate randomly-chosen shapes as a fun challenging twist. How's it sound?

Pic is a demo of the game screen (though the UI isn't finalized and obviously the word will be hidden from non-artists)

Not that simplistic but close. Just a simple trunk made out of a subdivided square and leaves are just a bunch of planes cobbled together.
No clue how AO works but I'll look into it.
Gonna re-do the texture again too, with more randomness. I'm sick of doing it again but I don't really have a choice. Probably going to make it look more like the first idea I had, on the left.
Thanks lads.

I'm looking to make a fairly simple little RPG. Is Gamemaker 1 suitable for this?

Any good guides on using it, or do I not even need to bother with that since my idea is so bread and butter.
Also I'm not looking to sell it, just a fangame, so I'm not above just pirating whatever.

RPGMaker is the ultimate in "just a fangame" "fairly simple little" RPGs. GM would be the next step up from that, which would require more work but give you more flexibility.

2 hours left in agdg 72 hour game jam. It's crunch time.
>>
>>172358381
Sounds good then.
I kinda wanted to make it similar to Earthbound, and it will be anyways in design choice aside from the combat. I'd make the combat work the same way too, but I don't think GM or RPG Maker can emulate that can they?
>>
>>172358646
I know more about EB's story than its combat, but I'm told it has some kind of timing mechanic involved? GM could manage that, RPGMaker I really have no clue (though there is a general specifically for RPGMaker that you could ask, should you decide to go that route).

I've been using unreal engine for a couple years now; is unity honestly easier to work with ?

either way i'm not gonna switch over because i only know c++.
>>
>>172359084
Earthbound has a rolling HP Bar and yeah, there's the timing to the music to do more damage. I'm less interested in the latter, and more in the former. You can take fatal damage, but as long as you pop a healing item or spell, or end the combat before the HP rolls to 0, the damage will stop.

What'cha think of this? I've been working on it for about a week and a half. It began as a prototype for a dev studio in Cali who wanted to test my skills, but now that I've submitted it I'm wondering if I should keep going. I have a lot of fun messing around in it, even after I've worked on it for so many hours these past few days, so I take that as a good sign.

I have used the fucking engine. Any 3D game engine that supports the use of Python is trash. Python is unstructured garbage and although it may be easy to learn and use, which I thank the creator for creating as a GATEWAY programming language to help you get into it, it will teach you bad programming habits that you will end up using when you need to learn a real language that has value to it. Not using semi-colons, not organizing code placement, getting used to short names for operators, like "print()", shit like that will totally throw you off the path of good programming. So yeah, any engine that supports the legitimate use of an un-organized, weak, slow, limited engine is trash.

What I mean is that good habits aren''t inherent to a programming language. Things like semicolons or print don't have enough of an impact to make people retards for life that won't be able to pick another language/better practices after that.

OOOH... wew, lad. You might wanna settle down before you realize you are going to put a game on an empty store that is basically the wild west. No one buys Nintendo consoles except young children who were raised to not tolerate violence anymore.

>>172371674
Well, that's sort of true for the print thing since it's a big difference, but the first language you COMPLETELY learn will stick out in your head. Well, not completely, you can never completely learn a language, but to the point where all the main features that are used constantly in a script in that language makes sense to you. Python uses no semi-colons, which if you do enough programming in Python, it'll stick in your head to leave the end of the line blank. Once your main programming habits are established, you aren't fucked for life, it just takes a whole lot of training to get out of. Having bad development habits will make it harder for you to learn to use languages that do use semi-colons and stuff. You will remember not to put semi-colons at the end. It's like learning Martial Arts while being fat, it makes everything harder. You know what I mean?

>>172371919
>>172372131
Actually, it isn't hard to learn if you are up for it. I know a video on YouTube that's an hour and 10 minutes long by Derek Banas named "C++ Programming", and it'll teach you everything you need to know about C++ in it. It teaches you all the operators one at a time, so by the time you finish the learning and remember most of it, you'll already be able to see ways to combine operators and variables to make unique functions. It's so cool when it all comes together. I copied down what he did and took notes over what he explained about all of it using C++ comments in a .cpp file, I suggest you do to. I only had to watch it once, most people have to watch it 5 times, copying down and taking notes brings it down to one before you have memorized most of it. Start practicing right after.

You start in a town and raid underground dungeons that are randomised. While in the town the shopkeepers are randomised from a list. I'm fucking around with PivotAnimator aka stick figure animations the program to sort of create skeletons for my animations but I still can't draw for fucking shit so even if I practice and get the animation skeletons down I won't know what to do past that besides stick some clothes on the stick figures and weapons.

But I doubt someone would buy or even be interested in a game with stick figures as the characters if it isn't a quick flash game.

>I am gonna do it
Shit, dude. Thanks.

I need a script that will target the mid/lower back of a quadrupedal rig and will make it slowly rotate towards the bone above it in the hierarchy as the dog changes direction, thus creating a sense that the backside has weight to it. HOWEVER, this script's effects should not compromise the dog's animations. Is that specific enough?

Again, thanks man.

First, I had it set to auto-post and I was typing a sentence out when it hit 0. I was gonna say "When I was little, I wanted to be a dev at Sega on the Sonic Team. Sonic was actually good back them. Then uh, Sega stopped making consoles, and stopped being good in general. We wouldn't get another great Sonic game until Sonic Unleashed so far later that I was too old to get re-interested."

I got a few ideas for your combat:
-Yeah, have reactions
-Add body reactions too, like in that one game, Fate, that came pre-installed to Windows Vista/Windows 7 Home Editions
-Combos are a must
-Unlockable moves
-More weapons you can find in raids or steal from dead enemies
-Motivation to not just wall-glitch passed enemies would be some kind of currency dropped at the dead bodies of enemies that can be used at the shops you mentioned
-Here is an original idea, if you are attacking and they are attacking, each attack animation will morph into a stalemate animation that has you making mouse circles to break out it and you have the upper/lower hand depending on if you circled your mouse enough to warrant winning it.
>>
>>172374714
Thanks for the words of encouragement. And at the point I think you're referring to, I was actually trying to lock on to the guy on the right. I should have explained how locking on works better.
Black arrow = Player direction
Red arrow = Attempted aim direction
Blue line = Aim direction

When not locked on, the aim direction is the same as the attempted aim direction (AKA the direction the right stick is in). When the right stick isn't in use, the attempted aim direction is the same a player direction. When locking on, the lock on angle is based upon where the player is currently aiming. In the gif, you can see I'm aiming at the guy on the right, despite being near the guy on the left, so it locks on to the guy on the right.
>>

Would you like me to do it in a specific programming language, or are you using Unreal nodes?

>>

>>
>>172376040
Could you make those variables public so I can just plug 'em in? But if that's easier for you, I suppose:

Dalmatian_Spine_01SHJnt
Dalmatian_Spine_02SHJnt
Dalmatian_Spine_03SHJnt
Dalmatian_Spine_TopSHJnt
>>
>>172376040

You could just make a public list of GameObjects so you just plug in the bones and can use it with different spine lenght depending ho many bones.
>>
>>172376471
It's fine, they'll be public because what I am doing is adding a custom function to your dog script that does this.

/g/ knows nothing for a board that is meant to. I know, C++ is better, it's faster than 95% of programming languages, it has better operators, is more known and has more help to go along with it, has custom libraries you can install for more operators. Like graphics.h, that's a library meant for game development since it imports images as sprites, allows you to animate a series of sprites with a while loop and such stuff.

Alright so there's these brothers right?

You come across this guy in one of the shopkeeper slots, and it's just some kid npc sitting there. He's a bit loopy and is begging for money and you can see he's already got a hat full of cash. You can either rob the kid or give him some coin, or maybe a third option if you have the liar skill or something. Robbing the kid results in the brother suddenly showing up and he's a medium difficult bossfight, that drops a decent and consistent weapon when you kill him. So the event is random, but the loot is static. If you decided to help instead, the brother shows up as he did before but now ropes you into a questline of sorts, that will result in a different loot prize at the end. The player has two options to explore on different runs and can then later use their meta knowledge to min/max their builds when going for later game runs. Perhaps the older brother becomes a companion instead and utilises his weapon himself?

>>
>>172379115
I like to make it a reference to any transform that you give it, so the dog can look at the toy, but also at you if there's no toy to look at. However, if you need the toy specifically, it's any object with the "Toy" tag.

>tfw try 3d modeling because I can't draw at all then comes the artistic part where you have to see how to smooth out your models to make them look good

why is life suffering?
>>
>>172379402
So that's easy, I will just make a vector (I would make an array, but it's easier in-case you want to add more to the toy-list, a vector is exactly like an array, except it's size can change) of all the toys used in game AND so he looks at you, the player, and get a rotation reference to all items in the vector. So I will require ALL toy names that the dog will chase after and the name of your character in the vector. I will also add some if and else if statements to make sure it only looks at the player if the toys haven't been thrown.

>I can't pay you but I'll give you a cut of the profits
That's the norm until you become non-shit at art.
When you have a portfolio of many full games without flaws, then it would make sense to pay you up front.

There are three general levels of art.
1) Shit art. Will devalue the game. The game mechanics and the working code could be the same as a $20 steam game, but if the art is bad furfag scribbles now it'll be hard to sell for $1.99.

2) neutral art. Not bad, everything is consistent in style, the production quality just isn't where the art makes anyone pick this game instead of a different game. Might easily sell for $10 (and most people buy it at 7.50) instead of 20 bucks.

3) Eye orgasms. Exact same gameplay, but look at those screenshots, gets people buying it at $20+ on steam.

Nobody is ever at #3 without a portfolio of eye-orgasmic non-digital art / digital art / animations, etc. And most people at #3 also have years of commercial work, because there is high demand.

People with no-portfolio or with a portfolio where they have like 3-15 shitty pixel art characters/vehicles for each game are 9 out of 10 times in category #1, absolute shit art that makes the game worse.

#3 are worth paying up front. #2 are worth profit-sharing. #1 are worth a middle finger and not even uglifying the project in the first place.
If you've turned down profit-sharing when you don't have a large portfolio of $50,000+ success projects, it's guaranteed you're in group 1 and suffering from the dunning-kruger effect where you're so bad at art that you don't even recognize how bad your shit sucks.
>>
>>172381318

Okay. Sorry it took so long for that BASIC script, turns out that I can't use any of my OpenGL knowledge and I had to look some shit up on Unity rotation. It pisses me off that Unity wants you to use their Unity-specific library of operators. Wait, I still got one more variation of the look at script, we need to make sure we only have the neckbones and shit moving, gimme a minute to finish the rotation script.
I'll get to working on the butt-physics right after this, I know the Unity operators that i'll need now, so it'll be faster hopefully.

Not good enough. If you want to be successful, you need your art to be as appealing as possible.

Contrary to what codecucks think, art is far more important. You can get away with passable code, you can't get away with passable art.

Oh, well, you are supposed to drag your toy object onto the script while it's plugged into the dog character and it'll set the toy as the value of target, and the instance of ball was an accident. Excuse the mess of this new script, I just typed out each bone in this new script because I don't know if an array of bones will register correctly in this context. Here:

using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;

namespace UnityStandardAssets.Utility {

class NeckMovements : MonoBehaviour {
public Transform target = target;
void Update(){
float NeckRotations = 0;
NeckRotations += transform.LookAt(target);
Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3(NeckRotations);
Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3(NeckRotations);
Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3(NeckRotations);
Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3(NeckRotations);

Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.rotation;
}
}

}

I have an idea on the butt physics, don't doubt me, anon. I know exactly what I can do. I will do it tomorrow though, I might go to bed, it's getting late for me. Just wait please, I have a plan. (REMEMBER, ATTACH THIS NEW ONE TO THE DOG AND DRAG THE TOY ONTO IT.)

What's a good stupid 3D game engine in a scripting language that's good to prototype in? I always wanted to aim for that stupid simple scripting platform where I can just change a variable near instantly without having to boot up editors or recompile and I don't think I've found something that reached that.

What do I mean by "scripting languages"? I mean languages like Python, Ruby, et cetera. Quite honestly, I just wish there was a javascript engine that didn't make me first fuck around in the DOM and make html pages (even if that is stupidly quick by itself).

I can tell without trying that it isn't going to work. You can't add transform.LookAt(Target) to a float. It's not a float.

Also, "new Vector3()" needs 3 arguments, not 1.

>>172391273
It's because Panda3D's only 2 languages you can work with are Python and C++. C++ is great and you can literally get an entire triple-A game done in C++, but usually the second language used in an engine acts like an easy alternative you can use to something complicated in the main complicated language used. In Unity (shit engine, don't use it either), if you don't feel like making strings in C#, make them in Javascript and reference them in your C# code. Easy subtitles. They act as aid, and you never end up using the second, smaller language outside of that reason. You will probably never use Javascript in your game again as long as you can use C#. Python is a shit language though, and promotes bad development habits. It's slow, it doesn't feel right, that's because it's meant for beginners. Of you use Python for subtitles, chances are they are gonna be off-sync due to Python's slowness. Javascript is actually good at that type of thing because it's faster and it promotes "not perfect" habits, but better habits. It'll feel more comfortable for professionals.

>>172391923
Sorry about that, I really am not too clear on Unity's C# library. It's shit and I don't wanna learn, I am gonna stick with the several languages I know and Unreal. C++ is better than C#, you should switch to Unreal after this project is through, anon. It uses pure C++, and is an overall better engine.

>Did you play the original iteration that was actually 1MA?
An absolute ton of people did.

>That's why I'm going 2D. because if people that talented couldn't make it, why bother?
What makes you think it will be any different? The 2D Market is even more over-saturated.

The beauty of 3D is that even if you don't succeed making games, just learning 3D can open up multiple career paths, whereas 2D cannot; even less so if you're working with retro sprites. That's all on top of being in a much less competitive market.

Antichamber was made by a 1-man army, and has very simple, easy to make, and most importantly, appealing visuals, and it was successful.

public Transform target;
public Transform Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt;
public Transform Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt;
public Transform Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt;
public Transform Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt;
void Update(){
float NeckRotations = 0;

NeckRotations += target.transform.rotation.y;
Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3 (0,NeckRotations,0);
Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3 (0,NeckRotations,0);
Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3 (0,NeckRotations,0);
Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.eulerAngles = new Vector3 (0,NeckRotations,0);

Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_01SHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_02SHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_TopSHJnt.rotation;
Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.rotation = transform.rotation * Dalmatian_Neck_JawSHJnt.rotation;

However, it doesn't seem to do anything. I think the animations might override the rotations. I'll keep working with it to see if I can't get something working. Thanks again, Anon.

someone somewhere must be doing analytics on /vg/ thread speeds, if /agdg/ (and the rpg maker general) is on a whole other level than other /vg/, it should get its own board.
Also basically every other general is about playing games, this makes /agdg/ an outlier thematically as well

/agdg/ will never get it's own board because we're well behaved and self contained. That being said I would like to see the cool and helpful shit that would be posted on a board for game dev.

Before /qst/ everybody and their mother had to clog up /tg/ with their own quest thread or worse yet those fucking CYOA theads where just post those stupid fucking pictures and no discussion happens. It was shit. And yet those CYOA faggots are still on /tg/.
>>
>>172396919
It would probably be more active than /3/ or /po/
The traffic would also not directly translate, as locating the "agdg board" is simpler than locating the "agdg thread on the vg board". Each thread on the agdg board wouldn't have the chatroom-speed that this general has, but why would that be a bad thing? There would be plenty of discussion. Programming questions about games are domain-specific enough (especially engine-specific) to warrant separation from general programming questions

Tbh I think the anon above you had the right idea. There's no reason to seperate /lit/ into another board for people who write literature. I guess that's why 3D animators are paid so much more and generally have greater skillsets.

Hundreds if not thousands of developers are using a free serialization plugin for Unity that has GNU GPL'd code hidden inside it and they can all get royally fucked by GNU unless they remove it. But its the encryption that is GPL'd so if they remove it their players' save data is fucked.

yeah sure friend that is totally a valid comparison bro, just learn anatomy and you suddenly can draw well enough to be comparable to somebody who can dev in an engine. you won't be symbol drawing or pillow shading at all.

>>
>>172420076
>the point was that it takes a lot in art to even get to "not much" level gamedev like making shit in GM
I may be biased then. But I still think studying the subject in itself will cut down on the time it takes for you to learn how to draw it. It won't drastically cut it in half but it's still faster.

>>172420514
Don't take entirely my word for it, I may be wrong.
>>
>>172420514
The thing is, if you want to wrap a texture around a sphere(like a world map), you'd have to have it in, say, an equirectangular projection for it to make sense, because the farther away from the equator you go, the less room you have.

Let's say your world is 100 units wide and 40 units tall. If you wrap it around a sphere, you'd have 40 units long meridians, which is okay and good, but all your circles of latitude would be 100 units long according to your map, but less and less according to your sphere coordinates, and you'd have a distorted and squished map the closer you'd get to the poles.

What do you hope to achieve by this, anon. Something like an xcom globe?

Another solution is to not store the data in a grid, but only display it that way.
>>172420897
Yeah, a naive solution doesn't work. I was looking for some consistent system (rotation?) to approximate things though.

The idea is to create a df-like game using a spherical world. It's not really essential though and a fairly long way off anyway. I just came up with the idea and was curious if it had been done. The world will be big enough that it only renders a small section, so the difference between lattitudes would be very small. The problem is I don't know how to deal with the world as you move closer to the poles.

One idea would be to simply approximate it with rectangle wrapped at the sides and give a lore reason why the poles are not reacheable.

>The idea is to create a df-like game using a spherical world.

You mean, dwafr fortress on a planet? Yeah, i'd say it's entirely possible - more than that, it's been done before with other games, just look at Planetary Annihilation.

I'd suggest you to read up on planet/spherical world generation and go from there. Even if it'sd in 3d, i would asssume the basics would be similar.

I didn't make any contrary claim. It goes without saying that you need to study art to git gud at art. ackshually that is not 100% true. in japan, lolita fashion is just wearing little girl shit, but yeah, it's usually sexualized in media. that does not mean it is sexualized by definition though. there are plenty of non-lewd lolita communities and cosplayers.

you could make a "loli" game with just small girls doing fashion related stuff, blurring the line with visual kei al a malice mizer etc.

I really don't get all the butthurt though, image boards have a time honored tradition of loli posting faggotry. I don't want to fuck kids but being mad about it on an image board is like going to a mosque and getting mad because jesus doesn't like it. redditors get out.
