Miyazaki has explicitly said that he doesn't really think there's a set story, anything not revealed explicitly in game is just up to the player's imagination.

It's not like he invented that though, From was doing that long before Miyazaki got hired. Miyazaki just came up with the souls universe and a lot of those specific details, but not the style of the storytelling in the games. His main contribution was the multiple endings (which he started with in ACLR).

If you really want you can try placing sign near dragonrider boss fog, near servants quarters bonfire, or try fighting high SL people at red arena (which is another hot spot for duels, but only at SL 150).

Actually yes, i forgot that you can farm them there. But do note that farming will make your SM to go high, unless you're using the ring that prevents you from getting souls.
As for the farming gear, get gold serpent ring +2 from NG+ gargs if you have the balls for it, or get ring +1 from iron keep vendor and ONLY wear it, don't wear any other farming gear with it.

Interesting side note, New Londo was built above Oolacile. Oolacile got eaten by the abyss when Manus was resurrected. Manus was buried under Oolacile in an ancient ruin.

New Londo was under the DaS1 Firelink Shrine.

The Ringed City is also under the DaS1 Firelink Shrine.

So, The Ringed City is probably in the same area as Oolacile, but pre-dates it. The abyss was always there, and Manus just dredged it up when Oolacile brought him back from the dead and he noticed shit was all sealed off for whatever reason.
