Augments are consumable parts, you research them once and get a copy of it, and then can find more in the field.

So if I build a Carnifex III and put an augment in, it consumes that augment, but I can find another in the field to use in a future build.

Yeah, you start with the human soldier, vanguard, engineer, adept, sentinel, and infiltrator classes for each gender. They're exactly the same as one another (but use different XP progression), and they're the only classes that are separated by gender.

There's just the two turians classes, one's a soldier, the other is the havoc trooper, which is basically a more offensive-oriented soldier.

It's not a great game but it's not as bad as the reviews make it out to be. I like the OT a lot better but I still had fun playing this. The animations, writing, and dialogue are all average at best, and objectively bad at worst.

If you enjoyed Mass Effect 3's combat, but found it very "awkward" or "clunky", it is extremely likely you will find the new combat fluidity very refreshing, and quite satisfying.

Other RPG elements of the game also tend to be more average than bad.

The multiplayer, especially coordinated multiplayer with friends, is quite fun. It is effectively a far more polished version of what we were given in the last Mass Effect; I would not put it past myself to say that there are many people out there that would purchase the game solely for the sake of the multiplayer experience.
