I really want to give PoE a shot because I love ARPG games, mostly Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest, but is there any room for casual/"do it the way I want to" type play in POE?

Most people play on softcore despite how it seems here. There's plenty of room for casuals but you should look up some guides because a lot of mechanics can be really confusing and the difference between stuff like increased/more are never really explained in-game

Raider was already one of the strongest ascendencies, but what held it back was the inability to maintain frenzy charges on bosses.
Now that they fixed this it has shown itself to be one of the strongest subclasses.
Frenzy charges scale everything and are a reliable way to get free damage while also gaining very strong defensive bonuses while maintaining frenzy charges.

I ripped my SRS+Sentinel necro earlier in the league and want to go back to it. The only place I really had problems was with breaches, since the spectre AI would run all over the place and not kill shit fast enough. Eventually was overwhelmed and that got me killed in a Tul breach.

I can't buy Severed yet, but that's really the only upgrade I can think of. Better to go Spectre in 6 link instead of SRS? Stick with Bones of Ullr and Victario's?

Are there life builds that unironically go for less than 250% life (jewels included) these days?

Vp + reflect works simultaneously you dummies. No matter how big your initial hit is. When you hit a mob with reflect you are being dealt let's say 10k dmg but at the same time you leech for 12k, the game just subtracts and leaves you with 2k ho leeched. That's why vp is generally a must have if your build can't evade reflect.

Life is for races, budget farming on a new league or leveling. You will RIP sooner or later, don't expect to hit 100. CI with 300%+ ES on the tree is what you want to actually survive random bullshit.

One exception being max block AA builds, but those are hybrid with a good 1-2k ES that constantly refills on block. And that build is expensive as all fuck, you really want AA, Anvil and Red Nightmare. The Surrender builds are shitty budget versions of that which are significantly less immortal.
