Are scripts for VX Ace dying out? I'm scrolling through the master script list and I'm finding that a lot of these are broken links or just removed by the author.

I mean, I'd work on MV if it wasn't for the weird lag I get while playtesting that some others say aren't an issue for them.
>>
>>171655906
I think most scripters have moved one by now.
>>
>>171657340
Eh, that's a little disappointing, but I guess it can't really be helped. I'm terrible at locating scripts or plugins, so I don't exactly know what I'm supposed to be looking for to minimize the lag made by the game, or even what exactly the issue is when trying to figure out how to work around it.

Germanic themes and the approach of justifying a holocaust.
That is, to murder thousands of a gypsy like race for the word of god is Schwertvon Unserem Herm Gebuoen. Soon you grow to learn the instabilities of the ideals and what the opposition believes in and what you believe in.

With a major point of the game to not make a "good" or "evil". With each cause is justified in some sense. But with a middle route being to save the world of sorts.

It might be overturned for a simpler plot. But I do like the ideas present.

You're a guy that gathers a party through a journey to save the kingdom from someone that wants to summon a demon. If you don't fuck up you're good and you either save that someone or defeat him for the good of the kingdom. If you fuck up you get another journey in another world and then you either go back to your own or slaughter your party and die.

Also what do you think is better for a game: generic "describing" enemy names(flame elemental wolf called "Crimson Wolf") or made up names that leave the player guessing from the looks or moves(called Wurfe)

Last one was in December I think, so probably about 3 times a year.

I'd far rather have the standalone installer which doesn't go on sale, but all I really need is the license on the chance I'm asked, and I'll just continue pirating the standalone to avoid steam cloud save bullshit

I'm not really sure what the framing device is, but it seems to be an old guy going straight from talking about the weather to immediately telling a folk tale that has nothing to do with the weather.

Rather than creepy or mysterious, it just feels really inorganic to switch topic like that with nothing linking them.

As an aside, aren't you also working on that sexy robots vidya? Is this a downtime project?

I'm trying my best to make my game have very little dialogue/cutscenes, but the plot is kind of complex and not really possible to explain through gameplay alone.
So I'm wondering if I should go the lazy route and leave books/notes around explaining what's going on. Does anyone even read those?
My past projects were all really exposition heavy and I'm trying to avoid that.
>>
>>171684470
MV has some good plugins, but VXA is better for smaller sprites, less lag, and it's recent enough to still have working scripts.

You need to give the players enough story to get them invested so they are motivated.
Exposition dumps via notes/books are pretty boring if you ask me, I rarely read those.
A note here and there giving a little more insight about a character is okay, though.

Do you feel like a wizard yet? I know I do!

Don't worry, I'm going to smooth the animation so it's not so jerky on linear paths and so that it goes straight to the person instead of sorta-towards-it.

That is a projectile, btw, and not just an event running at a person. Which reminds me, I'm still wondering if fireball should even lock onto a target or if it should shoot straight. It's the same work either way, I suppose.
>>

>Does it also work when the person moves?
Right now, yes. It's heat-seeking or CURVED FIREBALLS, which looks just as wonky right now since I haven't smoothed its trajectory.

>>171701000
I'm planning on it. Right now projectiles move at a rate of 120 pixels per second in the X direction and the same in the Y direction (hence why it tends to align before hitting), but I'm planning on them moving at a fixed time, either something zippy like it always hits at 0.5 seconds after casting, or at a fixed speed that'll hit roughly 0.5s after casting from 5 tiles away.
>>
>>171689968
Nice voice changer.

Also, I'm not a big fan of scrolling walls of text on a plain black background.
>>
maybe I should try making a game

although I have zero experience and I can barely code anything worthwhile in Gamemaker

maybe not
>>
>>171704738
You barely need coding experience with RPGMaker unless coding is what you're specifically going for. Go try making a game.
>>
Damn. I came up with my characters before I came up with my plot. What do I do now?
>>
>>171706918
You just need something to bounce them off of. Tomb of Horrors? Evil Wizard? Killer Robots? Competing on a game show?
>>
>>171706918

Now think about some exciting situations to put those characters in. When you have a bunch of them - try to come up with how to justify those situations with a story. When it's all done - you should have a basic idea for the plot and the direction you would want to take with it.
>>

They fight an evil undead-businesswoman. What I don't know is how they would meet and why they would join together.
>>
>>171707786
Some complete strangers just happen to be taking the same elevator to floor 66 for an important business meeting at 6 o' clock sharp. Unfortunately for our heroes, this elevator ride quickly becomes a HELL-evator ride as they are magically intercepted by a demonic undead mistress and pulled into her demonic realm.

Of course that's fucking goofy, but it doesn't always hurt to try and go outlandish as possible for ideas.
>>
>>171707786

>why they would join together

If they are fighting an evil businesswoman together, they should have something in common, right? Maybe they were all affected by her actions? It should be enough motivation to team up and try to take her down together.

>how they would meet

That's harder, but I think this anon's idea

>>171708442

would work pretty well.

When you're trying to formulate a game do you usually start with maps first or database first?

I always start with systems first - eventing the desired parts of gameplay that aren't already built in. For example, a pop quiz system, broken into subjects and a method of tracking progression and completion. Or a system for turn-based, sRPG combat on a map. Or a system for generating random NPCs. Or a system for real-time combat. Or a system for displaying text on the screen.

And so on. I like to know what I want the game to do before I start designing it. My exact method of game building is first having an idea of what world I want, then how I want people to interact in that world, then building the necessary systems for that interaction, and then building the world with those systems in place.

I also put asset creation really low on my list of things to do since I'm usually wondering how I'm even going to make things work, and I'm likely to drop a project/move on to something else anyways. RPGM is really just a learning tool for me. I don't have any great aspirations of game making since I'm not a one man team. I can't art or music at all.

On one hand, I really like having most of the story down to earth and low fantasy with a few high fantasy bits and locations. But on the other hand I could make it completely nuts and have a whole lot of original ideas. But that might distract from the "seriousness" of the story.

Jellyfish people created the planet but fucked a few things up and are now stranded on a shithole they made.
Dragons are all extinct but also ghosts. They spook around and possess people for revenge.
A Sphinx that sucks at riddles so it tells bad jokes instead and is unable to guard its post.

People will be attached to the story, even when completely insane shit happens on the screen, if the plot is good.

Mixing dark themes with crazy/goofy stuff can work surprisingly well. The games that do it have a very special "flavour" to it. If you need an example - play some Yoko Taro's or Suda51's games. Personally, playing them have really eased me to the idea of going nuts in my own game.

>>
>>171801396
Not sure what you mean by image capture, but it can do everything else.

If you know java you can do pretty much anything with the engine.

If you're like me and don't know shit it's pretty user friendly. It holds your hand through it/does most things for you. That's always nice.

But yes you should start with a basic game just to get comfortable with the engine.

Option in the menu for controls that shows the image for the controls. No need to hand hold, Just give them the ability to look at the controls if they want to and leave it at that. Unless you allow a player to remap their keys then it's a whole lot of messed up and i wouldn't want to be stuck with the job of making it work.
>>
>>171755285
Def don't do the bottom one for all dialogue. Think of the art assets you'd have to create.
>>
>>171802141
Basically capture "photos" of certain scenes. If there is a body, you'd have a zoomed in screen capture of that asset, and it'd have "notes" taken by the PC. You'd have to go out of your way to find them. I tried to dick about in Gamemaker with this idea, but I couldn't implement it, being a brainlet and all.
>>
>>171803532

There's your problem.

Not every game needs Fire 1/Fire 2/Fire 3/Fire 4 etc.

Unlocking new skills doesn't mean there has to be a power disparity between the old ones. Having more options in battle is already an advancement.
>>
>>171815195
My thoughts have always been using a percentage for damage rather than flat damage. With flat damage, it will only work on enemies in the beginning(if it's a starting or early spell) and not on near end game skills. But using a percentage, like 25%, it scales as the game goes on and possibly quite viable. Also status effects.

Finally finished Chapter 1. I figured I'll give my own comments so I can go sound important.

>Maybe consider putting in Yanfly's animated tiles option into the game? I've had some lag issue and it seems to be from animated tiles and how big the maps get.
>Leo, was Eye in the Sky a.k.a. NECROLITH an intentional thing, or is it coincidence that it happens to look like something from the VX Ace collab?
>A couple of minor typos.
>The monsters in the forest that can use ZaDark are really damaging, and really draining on the party's resources. Maybe lower how frequently they can use it? Them casting MaDark is fine.
>The villains maybe appear a bit too abruptly. We barely know about Jaye before Griselda shows up as well.

Either way, looks good. Hope you guys can keep the flow going then.

Making cities without walls(as in the playable area is surrounded by buildings and shit for an illusion of the city being bigger than the actual map) is such a pain in the ass.

Since i don't have glowing shit on map transitions i just can't allow a player reach an edge of the screen and not be transported hence why i can't have a road leading off-screen.

How you do your maps? My biggest problem is actually seeing the bigger picture/getting an idea. So far i'm just putting building over each other until it looks good and oh boy do i redo that shit a lot since it usually looks bad/i realize i need a building i can enter but there are none left.
>>
>>171820189
I actually draw my maps beforehand, it's way easier to plan this way
>>
>>171821148
Well shit, time to level up my imagination then.

I try to draw and plan beforehand too but it always changes during recreation, usually for the worst since those changes come out of the blue.

Still thanks, i guess i just have to keep going at it until it works.

At least i don't have to worry about making it look good yet, still working with basic "geometry" so it walks good and ain't too narrow or wide.
>>
>>171821827
Yeah, it's a lot of fiddling around until you find something you are completely satisfied.
If you are making a large town I would suggest splitting the map, this will help with performance and gives the illusion of being bigger.
>>
>>171821148

>>
>>171824858
No idea when they will release a new maker, I think they are going to milk MV for quite some time.
Yes you can use pirated assets as you find them.
>>
>>171824858
Well as far as the patterns of other previous makers, a new RPG Maker is out roughly every three years. MV hasn't been out for two years yet, and VX Ace, the previous maker, already has a bunch of script support moving away from it.

And since MV's biggest thing is Javascript, the script scene for it is still very strong.

I doubt MV will get outdated soon. You have at least a year and a half before that company might even think about a new engine, and that's plenty of time for you to get a moderately good game out.

Holy fuck it's frustrating to see all these plugins but none of them do what you want them to do. Why can't i have free turn active combat? Why do enemies have to sit and wait for me to make up my mind on what i want to do before it gets to attack me? Why is this simple ATB mechanic not a fuckin default by now? Why do plugins claim ATB but they're just as turn based as default RPG maker, They just do it a different way.

It's not an Active Time Battle if the battle freezes time to wait for you when your timer is full.

A collection of Ranger skills. From left to right.

Marksman's Stance, Quick Shot, Eagle Eye
Strider's Stance, Spike Trap, Peregrine Blade

With just that context can you guys make these out? Shit is super hard.
>>
>>171826196
Sorry, but I wouldn't know. I create my own assets.

>>171826602
I'm not entirely sure what he is doing in the Marksman's Stance, is he holding the bow sideways?
>>
>>171827024
Supposed to be prepping/unsheathing the bow. Its really hard to get it right with that tiny ass space.
>>
>>171826602
I can't really tell what the first image is, I have no idea even with the context.
It's easy to tell the second one's an arrow.
Third one is well done, I can tell it's a bird with glowing eyes.
The 4th one looks like a dark monster with a silver head to me, not sure how that relates to strider's stance.
If I didn't have the name for context I'd think the 5th one was a mountain range with a waterfall.
I can tell the last one is a sword.

I think you're cramming a bit too much detail into some of these for how little space you have to work with.
>>
>>171827817
The spike part of the spike traps was fine before, looks a bit more "biological" now. It's the white part that throws me off the most.

Victor's ATB has Wait and Active ATB modes you can even leave it up to the player to decide which they want to use in the options. Now the only downside is that it's not compatible with yanfly's battle engine core. Regardless of the incompatibilities having full active time battles is a thing of beauty.

Though considering I've never actually finished anything before this is going well, I might just make custom assets and just expand on this game. It's been an awful lot of fun.

oh shit, nice!
One of these days I might actually decide to try and make a game with this afterall. I've had ideas floating around in my head for a while, and a tactical system would open up more potential for shit like positional shit, auras, projectiles, traps, aoes and stuff.

Now all I have to do is actually muster up the energy to get some proper work done. Mostly graphical shit, I suppose.
Pic related is what I wish I could make.

3D V1.png

So, some time ago I made a simple first-person script, inspired by that one anon's 8 bit dungeon crawler. However, trying to create the graphics required for this in a resolution as high as 640x480 and with a LOS of even just a few tiles was extremely time-consuming, what with having to draw the same object in roughly 50 different perspectives and sizes for just one tile.

(cont.)
>>
File: 3D V2.png (5KB, 640x480px) Image search: [Google]
3D V2.png
5KB, 640x480px
>>171861917
Now I gave it another try, using only perspective-less sprites to try and keep down the workload required to create the resources. Note that while previously the tile size was 3x3m, it's not 1x1m, allowing for more detailed environments and movement. I initially wanted to have a draw distance of 20 tiles, but I'll have to cut down on that a bit due to framerate drops.

Anyway, here's a first picture. Now to actually create some "textured" content.
>>
>>171861347
I don't have to work on the weekend so I am 100% down for a 48 hour weekend challenge.
>>
Do you like having smooth not as laggy map transitions or do you prefer no map transitions with 150x100 maps? On one end you've got an immersive large map but the choppy stutter you get will weaken the experience and on the other end you've got smaller 50x50 maps with less lag but black edge transition.
>>
>>171861917
>>171862213
Interesting stuff
>>
>>171865083
Transitions. There's a very fine balance you need to strike with huge, open maps and it's very rarely done right. You tend to either end up with areas that are just lots of dead space, or you fill in everything and it feels like everything is just packed together too tightly.
>>
>>171866478

Thanks, I was having trouble deciding on which i should use. Making a huge map and getting stuck with the decision helped me understand how to make good map transition at least. Make a huge 200x200 map and then cut it into pieces so it all flows together rather than trying to make each map individually which was always the most difficult thing to deal with for me.

I was planning on adding in Dancer and possibly Rune Fencer. The mapping is the biggest undertaking, I'm cutting it up a bit which is helping. South Gustaberg is a little smaller and North Gustaberg is going to be much smaller because it's single player, It doesn't have to be huge. Bastok Mines has been completely removed and the entrance from South Gustaberg into the Mines area has turned into a cave leading to Zeruhn Mines. Also the Auction House's have been removed.

I'm trying to keep it faithful but i obviously need to cut useless things that only served to pad out play time for subscription fee.

Most of the NM's are going to be in the game as well as all the job quests

Is the market too oversaturated?
I've only seen rpg maker horror games that are full of jump scares and not many ways to actually fight back.
I'm taking silent hill's Atmosphericâ„¢ approach with mine and also using many of the same things like a flashlight, guns, and limited ammo/health packs. Are there any games similar to that already?
>>
>>171893549
>Is the market too oversaturated?
It's probably oversaturated as hell, but I don't really think that's a reason against doing something.
The market's absolutely full of sci-fi alien romps and medieval fantasy epics in Not-Europe, we can take another haunted house.

Mind, I'm personally quite biased to them. Nearly all of the indie games that inspired me when I was young were nip-made horror RPG games.

So who wants to play my RPG I made with RPG Maker 2003 when I was a little shit? Recently found it on one of my old computers I haven't touched in forever.

I remember being really into it - replaying it, it's short, only took me a few hours, but it was bug free, decently fleshed out (for what it was) and even had an optional boss.

This link should work. https://my.mixtape.moe/usaeiy.zip

Been a very long time since I've played through the game, but there are some things I remember:

1. Controls like an NES RPG, using the arrow keys and Z+X. I think enter works too.

2. You can interact with most objects in the world by pressing the action button. To save your game, touch a save statue. This being said, I don't really have to explain much, since the dialog is pretty informative early on, try not to skip through text.

3. If memory serves, the entire game is bug free. I remember painstakingly making sure nothing in the game was broken, rather than some text alignment.

4. The opening house is really ugly. I don't know why.

5. The ocean maze is terrible.

Some things to keep in mind: I remember that this is very much so an inventory management RPG. If you aren't the type to grind out a level or two here and there, maintaining your resources, potions, etc, is important. I remember in the very late game miracle potions are nearly required.

There are one or two points of no return in the game, so if you really get stuck, try to keep more than one save file - however, the game really isn't too difficult.

I don't think that there is anything left to say. I made this when I was young, so it is VERY amateur. This being said, the game is bug free, there are minigames, NPCs with patterns and dialog that changes as events transpire, the like. I remember playing the game for the first time in forever two-ish years ago and being surprised at it.

It did mark the first and last game I'd make, though; I am in college now, and prefer fictional writing. A small pipe-dream of mine is to do the writing for a game project.

If anyone has any questions, I'll pop in throughout the day, for the next few days. If anyone manages to play through it and let me know what they think, I'd be very humbled. But do keep in mind this was made a long time ago, and is very amateurish.

Bought the Time Fantasy tilesets/monster pack because of the sale, and they looked ok in screenshots. Now I regret that because wow are they ever limited. You can only make a very specific type of game with them. Doesn't that frustrate people?
Well anyway, in the wake of bad decisions, I'm curious what tilesets people adore that aren't custom. Do you ever find yourself limited by them?

>>
>>171945608
Yes, I do remember this part being rather poorly tuned - but remember - the save point (should) fully restore your health every time you use it. Between that, and the ghost merchant, you can grind with no downside in that area, using the gold you earn to buy potions to tank the boss. Also, always kill the necromancers first. They have high attack, but low health. Their minions deal little damage, so they can be ignored. I'll link this post to the main one for ease of access. >>171936158

Hello everyone interested in the 48 hour game jam! Here is what I have come up with.

It will start officially 12 hours from this post (10:00 AM EDT, 2:00 PM GMT). You can do prep work like locating scripts, plotting the story and dungeon layout, and whatnot, but try not to do any ACTUAL work until the time period starts.

Here is what I boiled up.

Easy Mode: One town/safe zone, one dungeon.

Normal Mode: RTP and Generator art assets only.

Hard Mode: Include a coherently developed puzzle, like sliding blocks or flipping switches, into your dungeon.

God Mode: Multi-floor dungeon, with multi-floor puzzles.

I hope those seem like decent levels of challenge for you all? Feel free to take up any number of the challenges in any combination, although the spirit of it says that you take them in order.

Does that sound good to y'all?
>>
>>171992772
I'll take Normal or Hard depending on how motivated I am.

Is there any way to make Poison damage show up in the battle log?

It's not very satisfying to poison enemies when you can't see how much damage it deals to them.
>>
>>172000516
It was a basic rpg. I couldn't even tell you the name of the main character.
I purged it a few years back. About the same time I threw all my filled sketch books into a fire with my wadded up watercolor paintings and blue ribbons.
I was pretty angry back then, and they were just art assignments.
Assignments. Goals set by other people.

Everyone thought I should take pride in my abilities and accomplishments. But their admiration was just thinly disguised envy. So I thought I'd make a point by tearing it all down to show them that it doesn't mean a thing. There's no glory in doing a thing, unless you're a psychopath that enjoys walking on top of other to feel superior.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you'll feel satisfied by reaching goals you set for yourself. And my problem is just that I never wanted it for myself. I just took on challenges because it's what everyone else was doing...and I'm going to stop there before I waste the night ruminating.
>>
>>172005238
Whoops, I'm stupid. I meant in VX Ace, specifically.
>>
>>172005282
You're not the only one that feels that way with stuff sometimes Anon. And it's true that it sucks doing something especially when you really don't feel like it's something that resonates with you. And you're right that you don't have to take pride in something that you've done.

However, I'll just say it's still a part of your past and your experiences. Don't feel like trying another thing because the first time didn't give you anything out of it? Fair enough. No one's holding a gun to your head for participation this time, right?

Me, I'm just an Anon that wants to try it on a whim. It will probably come out infinity + 1 day after the deadline because of my work ethic. Whatever the result though, I'll still chalk it up to experience.
>>
>>172005282
You sound talanted. I feel your pain. Smart people are never truly trusted. You have to find hobbies and people worth your time. I get weird looks for teaching kids DDR when I play it at the arcade, but they want to learn and that particular machine doesn't charge for Player 2. Kid are cool, because they focus on accomplishing the task instead of figuring out how to exploit or control you.

It's not bad to be smart or talented, but you gotta find ways to lift other people up. By giving up some of yourself and contributing to society, you're allowed to be greedy with the rest. The social contract is fulfilled.

Maybe by seeing the results in 2 days or so, you can learn to trust people again. Even if it's just some random anons in a thread forever on page 10. We're all in this together, man.
>>
>>172005282
sometimes talent and effort isn't what's needed. Sometimes you need to convince everyone else to put in a bit of effort, and that can be infinitely harder than squeezing every last drop out of yourself.

Things like envy or apathy, you can't just blame people for having them. You need to work around them to lift them up, so that others can do the same for you.

I haven't played Pokemon in years but I still feel it is probably the video game with the best consistent character designs, minus some of the old shitty ones.

It's pretty much popular for its designs alone. There's like a million better RPGs.

Even the literally-a-toucan above me is cute.

>>172007836
You could spend an entire thread cherry picking stuff like that and still wouldn't prove your point any further. I don't want to talk shit about the other dude here but his designs are almost all extremely weak. They have a lot of poor color choices, ugly silhouettes/poses, some are just confusing and have no sense of direction, and a lot of other stuff that I'm not well spoken enough to articulate. Of course I don't really expect an anon's rpgmaker game to have enemy designs with better designs than an official pokemon game, but you're either being disingenuous or you have poor sense of design.

Huh guess I wrote that too dramatically since most were great, really like two or three are usually lazy in each gen. Like the "just a sandcastle" and the "literally a horse" But there's like 802 of them, so that's not that unexpected.

Also I thought people played Pokemon for the competitive aspects of it.

Okay so I've got a problem, I want to let the player occasionally attack twice. Should i look into using states for this or WeaponUnleash? Currently I'm attempting WeaponUnleash but i can't seem to apply a level requirement and a % chance at the same time it only allows one or the other.

Anyone know a way to apply both of these notetags?

<Custom Replace Attack>
if (user.level > 50) {
id = 50;
} else {
id = 0;
}
</Custom Replace Attack>

and

<Weapon Unleash x%: y>
<Weapon Unleash x%: name>

If not I'll have to find another way to apply a % chance of skill activation after achieving a specific level.

Okay so i figured this out myself. I used both the yanfly Weapon Unleash and Auto Passive States and i applied the 40% chance of double attacking into a state and then added the passive state to a skill which unlocks at a certain level and so the character now has a low chance at level 25 to attack twice.

Well other than the art being kind of bland. The characters looking like Chinese knockoffs of known characters just seems annoying rather than hip and funny. It's a good idea and the execution seems to be fine but I'm not sure i understand why it would choose to go the Chinese knockoff route.

To me it just seems like a fangame where Sora from Kingdom Hearts teams up with Sonic and a self insert character that happens to be furry. Maybe it's just my instant hate anytime i see anything involving Kirby or Sonic characters that isn't Kirby or Sonic.

There's a ton of animated battler scripts for VX Ace. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure you can customize Yanfly's to change where the actors are positioned. Then all you'd need are sprites standing at a back-facing angle like that.

So... how about that upcoming 3DS RPG Maker, huh?

Seems like people are going to be a lot more limited in terms of prettying up their games since you're probably going to be stuck with the default tools, tilesets, and other system defaults. No custom scripts for making sideview battles, no way to import custom spritework... it's gonna flop, I bet.
>>
>>172080378
The PS1 version lets you make your own sprites. If they somehow find a way to remove that feature from a supposedly more modern maker I will make a special podcast which is just 10 solid minutes of my laughter.

Also, I'm interested because you can still easily share your work with your friends (They don't need you cartridge to play the game, just a free app and a wireless transfer). Can't sell your work, but still likely a solid maker
>>
>>172080698
You could do that with the PS1 version because it used 2D assets, and it came with a separate program on the same disc called Anime Maker, for designing your own graphics for the PS1 game.

The PS2 games used 3D assets instead of 2D, so they did not include a graphic design software,a trend which seemed to continue for the RPG Maker games for portable consoles, like the GBA RPG Maker, and the DS one as well as its updated rerelease.

So no, I sincerely doubt we'll be able to edit sprites and tilesets, since you couldn't do that for every single non-PC RPG Maker release following the PS2 ones.
>>
>>172082892
This
>>
>>172085034
But FES is 2D as well, right? Why woudn't they add an Anime Maker-esque feature where you draw new sprites with the stylus?

>Not in RPGM DS

Ah.

PS1 WINS AGAIN!
>>
>>172085034
At first I was agreeing with you, but then I knew you were full of shit, since you can edit and make graphics with RPG Maker DS and DS+.

Granted it was hard as balls because you had to rely on the DS's shitty stylus, but all the same, it had a graphics editor.

The 3DS RPG Maker's undoubtedly going to have an editor function.

I agree that plugins aren't likely to happen, but you're full of shit if you think we won't be able to make our own sprites and tilesets.

Many people can play at work during breaks, Hospital waiting room, DMV, Watching for UPS truck on the front porch and any other situation that would keep you from the computer. Because you're able to play anywhere this means you'll see a lot more games actually finished for it compared to other versions of the game. I can't help but feel a phone game would be much more successful as more people have a phone but hey the 3DS is a good system.

Some hate the "hahahah i'm so edgy kill kill kill" type of character.

Some hate the "i'm such a goody two-shoes, i'll never kill you or i won't be any different from you(which foolishness usually later causes another member of the party to get injured/killed)" type of character.

If you make a character that knows when it's the moment that things must be done then it's a good mix of the two.

This damage formula system seems backwards as hell. Variance affects the entire formula, and states are applied separate from the formula. If I wanted a spell to either kill an enemy if they have a certain amount of HP left, or do a varying amount of damage to them instead, I can't do that unless I do something silly, like instead of killing the enemy, the enemy just takes 1000000 damage. If I could have variance only affect the second outcome of the formula (where the enemy doesn't instantly die and instead just takes damage), or if I could apply the death state only to the first outcome of the formula, this wouldn't be an issue.

If I'm missing something here, please tell me. Any solution would be appreciated.
>>
>>172155343
Nevermind this, found out there are more commands available for use in the formula then the ones listed by hovering over it.
>>
Using b.die() in a damage formula shows a zero first (to indicate you're doing 0 damage) before killing an enemy. Anyway to prevent that and have it just kill the enemy outright?

You can try using a conditional branch on the troop that kills the NPC when a specific skill is used but i bet it would require a plugin to have the specific coding to kill only the enemy the skill is being cast on.

The preset options are really straight forward. Just play around with things until you start to understand it. Set a really simple goal and figure out how to accomplish it (guy in a prison cell is spoken to by a guard and released to go on a quest, for example).

However, if you have any programming experience or understanding, you can do some of the cooler stuff with pic related.

9 hours left for the first 48 hour challenge!

Once it hits 10:00 AM EDT (2:00 PM GDT) tomorrow, you must stop, save, and deploy whatever it is you've made! Complete or not. If you think your game has merit and you want to give it a layer of polish and make it GOOD, you can do so afterwards for as long as you want.

But remember. The 48 hour challenge isn't to make a good game. It's to make a game. It's like nanowrimo in that regard.

Best of luck to everyone still participating, and even if you dropped out, thank you for trying!

Not exactly a literary or visual masterpiece, but it DOES have a dungeon full of exploding chests, teleporter traps, mimics, and cursed treasure that turns you into a toad. So there's that.

What's an easy way to make sprite sheets for RPG Maker VX Ace? I have all of these frames, but now I'm looking for an easy way to make them into a sprite sheet.

I've created my own way of making RPG Maker VX Ace characters. This is a 3D model. I have the basic idle and walking frames keyframed and cameras setup all around the character, all i have to do is dress up the character and then press a button and it generates all of the frames.

The main reason why I wanted to do this is for custom sprite animations. I can pose the character however I want with ease, while I'm shitty at drawing.

What do you guys think about tiered magic? Is it pointless? Because for example, in Final Fantasy series you usually realize at the end of the game that you have all these 50 spells but you only use few of them.

Would it be better to make spells and skills deal like 5 or 10 % of damage or make so that the spell itself gets upgraded. For example, status healing spell gets new version where it can heal more statuses and also heal a little bit. It would keep the spell list clean and simple. But I don't know what kind of system people prefer.
>>
>>172211123
I think you should do it like this:

Fire1
>Fire Damage to one enemy
>Small MP cost

Fire2
>Fire Damage to all enemies
>Huge MP cost

Fire2's damage is actually comparable to Fire1, but since it hits all enemies it's better if you want to wipe out a big group all at once. The high cost of Fire2 gates the user from wanting to spam it.
>>
>>172211406
Also, since Fire2's damage is comparable to Fire1 in this case, it doesn't make Fire1 obsolete. It is a good magic all game long for scorching enemies who are vulnerable to fire.

Prrrrrrogress!

I mean, I know which parts of it work (all of it) and which parts don't (casting abilities), and I'm 72.6% positive why that isn't working (half-assing the Ability Master List, mainly by forgetting the proper way I usually do them and rushing it). It's just kind of a bummer because this bootleg way should have worked in the end. I mean, it does work - both button and mouse input - but it's shooting itself somewhere between cast time and cooldown.

I don't even know if I should diagnose the problem or just rework the Ability Master List, properly this time, which will guaranteed fix it. Either way, I'm going to bed.

Good night, anons.

The balance of the game makes the "White Mage" a bit useless in most battles, which in turn makes combat a bit boring so far. I would suggest you give it some status ailments to inflict on enemy Virii,
>>
>>172211123
I think on one end it makes things less confusing to have 1 spell but also boring. Players need to feel progression, If they start the game with Fire and level to 50 using Fire and then go fight the last boss using Fire while killing all the monsters leading up to the boss with Fire it gets kind of old but if you let them Start with Fire and then the spell gets stronger and flashier the higher you go it makes you feel stronger. Fire 4 looking like you crack the earth and the fire comes from the magma or something. You know, It's just fun seeing your character that started out a weak jackass throwing hot coal at people now rips lava from the earth and hurls it. Or go from throwing snow balls to creating a blizzard that has a chance to freeze the enemy solid for 2 turns.
>>
>>172231094
I'll sleep first, then rebalance some other time.

You can buy a status inflicting module in the shop.
Or even just swap out the weapon and core so it's not a white mage anymore.
>>
>>172231743
You can word it like that, but what it actually means 99% of the time is Fire 2 and Fire 3 are the same animation as Fire 1 but slightly bigger.
>>
>>172207213
pls respond
>>
>>172231946

How about Fire(Small ember) Fire 2(2 larger fire balls combine into a big one as you throw it and then Fire 3(Lava) and depending on your level of interest add an Ancient level spell that has a cutscene of an exploding star and then it compresses the power of an exploding star into a smaller Spirit Bomb of fire. Obviously the last one is a bit exaggerated.
>>
>>172231743
>>172211123
I would do it like this
>Fire1 is high cost, high damage
>Fire 2a deals status ailments and low damage
>Fire 2b is high cost, aoe
>Fire 3 is aoe stackable DoT, high damage/action efficiency
>Fire 4a is mid cost, max damage, but applies a self debuff
>Fire 4b is low cost, high damage that hurts everyone(including allies) except self

Something original, like not a 'bard' anything, for fuck's sake, you have an opportunity to create your own work and you're just riffing on existing tropes, picking and choosing whatever bullshit you fancy from D&D and existing JRPGs, when you could be actually, properly creating something
>>
>>172239635
The character is a parody of a Disney Princess. She attacks with songs and is rather insane once you get to know her. I was just saying it is a Bard for the sake of communicating the concept of the character to other anons
>>
>>172239635

Being completely original isn't always the best.

Sometimes you don't need to reinvent the wheel Anon.

Any character that uses song-based magic in battle is going to be a bard whether you explicitly call it that or not. Just like you could name your fighter a Slicey Dicer or your wizard a Fuckbringer and it wouldn't change anything.

If you can come up with a fantasy RPG class that isn't totally retarded or already covered by D&D or Final Fantasy, I'll eat my shorts.
>>
I want to make a female characters that uses summon-on-herself tentacles from undescribable demons to fight with, kind of like Desco from Disgaea.

The question is, without copying the character's personality how do i make it not sound or appear as perverted?

>you could name your fighter a Slicey Dicer or your wizard a Fuckbringer and it wouldn't change anything
I dunno, I think it might be an improvement over most alternatives.

Easy, don't make the character a generic anime girl and most poeole won't instantly make the connection to tentacle porn.

Yeah, I know
>league of losers
But this character is exactly what you described.
>>
>>172246290
It stands that they'd still be a rebranded fighter and wizard, though. You can't avoid using genre-ingrained tropes just by switching some words around.

Although I admit I'd be more likely to play a game that advertised a Fuckbringer class.

Look great man. I'm curious how it looks in motion.
>>
>>172249723
Thanks! Right now, it just jumps straight from one tile to the next. But since the tiles aren't that big, it's really not that bad. I've been thinking about adding fluid movement, and it _should_ work, but moving hundreds of pictures at once might just be too much.

Next thing on the to-do list is adding a height map, by the way. Not sure if that works either.
>>
Stupid question time.

Does this run on Linux?
>>
>>172250474
The latest patch for MV introduced Linux support.
But I don't run Linux so I don't know if it actually works.

Haaaah, I remember back when Don Miguel was the only translator around.
>>
>>172246189
It might help if you make them seem too unpleasant to have conventional perversion potential, like acid secretion, barbs, or such. Make them weapons, then play that straight. Even better, make them... not tentacles. SOmething more like segmented insect limbs and giant millipedes would be less likely to trigger the durr-hurr reaction (and let's be honest, anyone who plays your game WILL know what tentacle porn is).

Do you think you'd be able to upload that script or whatever it is you're using when you're finished with it? Or a tutorial on how to achieve a similar effect?
>>
>>172252561
Maybe, but first I'll have to find out what's even possible with this (as in, what features/details I can add to it). Note that this is all pictures, not a perspective-changing script like FPLE.

>>172252561

It's nice to come back to the main project(and to VX Ace) after working on a game for the latest game jam.

Here's a hint for the player to use, while solving two puzzles which I am working on right now.

I like the aesthetic you have going on here, and I appreciate that all the items in the shop cost multiples of 16.

But I got stuck fighting this guy for like 15 minutes. Not that I can fault your game balance when it was a 48 hour game, but he just kept healing and one of my guys could only do 0 damage and the other ran out of RAM.

Good job though, you made a neat game super quick, and you were the only survivor of the weekend game challenge.

and see if you can make something abstract from this. The more fucked up you go the more "demonic" it will seem.

Just discovered that RMweb's workshop board is basically an individualized resource requests.

Unlike, every other RM forums where workshops are just the artists personal WIP space for doing their own thing.

Yes. It killed his son back in '98. His boy was so excited to play Sonic Adventure, but it turns out a piranha plant was growing inside of the empty compartment in the system. Ate the kid right up, and the dad, in response, destroyed the system with a hammer.
