I think the reason people don't like the writing is because you are basically part of a piecemeal civilian crew that is led by a young newb who is making it up as it goes along. The military setting of the previous mass effect games streamlined things a lot, but in this game the characters are pretty much allowed to be awkward fucks that may annoy the player.
