Could you really run an android on lamp oil? Or do they need batteries of some kind?

Well you can generate electricity by burning fuel...
>>
yeah I've tried a few force trainers and their spells mostly seem like sortof bad offense that requires annoying Improve Force to have any respectable front-loaded damage, but doing so uses basically all of your mana.

The early levitation spell is nice at least for accessing some dungeons

Crawl babby here.

Will a shield fuck with my riposte rate?
>>
>>171437291
Very indirectly it will lower it, it's not worth worrying about if you are already using shields or worth not using a buckler while you are using a 1H sword.
>>
>>171437291
Shielding occurs before dodges, so it will mess with riposting.
>>
File: SHEV.png (6KB, 573x434px) Image search: [Google]
SHEV.png
6KB, 573x434px
>>171437291

Yes but SH lowers their total chance to activate over time as you block more attacks during combat so I think using shields with the goal of minimizing "initial" physical damage in case your EV doesn't work is still very relevant. The way SH affects riposte could be illustrated with an inverse exponential graph in which as more turns pass, the lesser its impact. Riposte has 33% chance to activate along with the chance of EV to work so SH's average influence for riposte to not work would even be lower than this
>>
>>171437926
>>171439478
>>171440304
I see. So the chain of events is SH -> EV -> riposte -> AC.

Is there a hard cap on how many blocks/ripostes you get per turn?
>>
>>171440907
No.
>>
>Find One Ring
>Equip Helmet of Ares
I am dealing berserker damage now.
>>
>>171440907

I wouldn't know about SH but dodge and riposte are basically the same being limitless; riposte just has twice lower chance than plain dodging to activate.
>>

>>171443272
The good old 3353.
>>
>>171443483
Ah, a classic.
>>
>>171440907
you get a penalty to SH for each block beyond the first, and IIRC you can only riposte each monster once per turn (before that change people were hilariously octuple-riposting hydras to death)
>>
>>171441768

his hammer is only 30lbs so its not like it makes a good mauler weapon anyways

>Yesterday, a couple changes were made to the god that I have strongly argued against. While I don't mind any of this, my wake up call came yesterday when I realized that changes had been made without me realizing at all (I was checking !messages in ##crawl-dev every day since I live on a different timezone, and nobody sent me a ping before this patch). Again, I'm not trying to express anger at the devs for not "respecting my design", which would be a shit attitude to have, but realizing that no matter how much time I spend, and how strongly I argue, I don't have control over the idea anymore, and on the flipside no responsibility for watching over it with the same degree of involvement. If I had been asked before these changes were made, maybe I would've felt compelled to remain in the conversation, but at the moment I don't feel like I can keep up, especially when I'm asleep through most of the live discussion.

btw what do entangle and nature's gate do?
>>
>>171497520
Do you have any attack spells at all? Or are you just meleeing everything to death?

Note that mages can change their second realm at will, at the cost of losing all the spell slots they've spent on it so far. You might be interested in ditching life magic and picking up an offense-focused realm like armageddon, chaos, or daemon.
>>
>>171497823
entangle slows mobs (almost all mobs resist slowing past the earlygame)
nature's gate summons hounds and other mobs.

>>
>>171497823
you can browse your spellbooks to read all the spell descriptions by pressing P or B or something

the game will tell you that Entangle slows monsters (same as a staff of slow monster but it costs way too much mana) and Nature's Gate summons some animals as your pets -- at very high levels it can make Ents
>>

Last book has some offensive spells, but it will be long, long time before you get there.

Armageddon's general choice for offense. Just damage-dealing spells.
Trump if you want summons/teleports.
Chaos/Death for offensive with some support.
Craft is buff-stuff.

In DCSS you are actively fighting against how unbearably boring the game is.

That makes sense.
>>
>>171525823
I'm pretty noob, so this is serious question? Why shouldn't you? You get xp and items
>>
>>171527261
there's no reason to wring every single drop of xp and loot out of a level, because there are infinite floors and thus there will always be more later on
in fact you'll actually get xp and items FASTER by rushing down to a lower dungeon level instead of staying on a high, easy level as long as possible

the only reason not to go down farther is if your character isn't strong enough to survive/fight down there

It's a waste of auts, but it's technically optimal gameplay, particularly for a 3-rune game.

Not just with XP, but loot/vaults/shops, too.

>>171526310
To get a feel for "when", you have to understand the central difference in *band item management vs Crawl item management.

In Crawl, items (specifically, consumables) are "finite" -- besides dangerous places like Abyss, Pandemonium, and technically Ziggurats as well, you can't really get more of any items you'd like except by searching the dungeon. And because the floors don't reset in Crawl, it's thus optimal to fully/mostly clear levels, so as to get everything that's there.

Conversely, in most *bands, consumables are effectively limitless due to the town shops. If you have enough gold, you can buy like 40 heal wound potions, 30 blink scrolls, etc. etc. etc. which you can't do in Crawl (I'm using the Crawl names for these items, but you get the gist).

Keeping that in mind, *bands encourage you to
0) Buy consumables that will keep you alive
1) Dive down as deeply as you can
2) Get the loot and XP of the deepest floors possible
3) When your consumables are nearly used up and/or you're about to die, high-tail it out of the dungeon (word of recall).
Rinse and repeat.

It sounds like suicide, I know, but it's because loot from deeper floors is *significantly* better than loot from earlier floors. The number that the official Angband guide uses is:
> Monsters and items at dl 5 (250') and deeper are much (~100x) more valuable than items at dl 1.

So, if you're wondering if you should dive in Angband/PCB, the answer is usually "yes".

Once you take off the shitbionics you're left with the nigh-impossible-to-find-and-install superalloy plating CBMs, and the joint torso ratchet, which are the best possible CBMs of the game.

They're a thing now?
Also, the ratchet would use a lot less space than an internal furnace, would it not?
>>
>>171581072
It won't be an enforced thing for a while because of disagreements regarding them.
Unless you intend to keep your t00n well past stable, it's safe to exceed the limits.
>>
>>171581168
Yes
Technically: the furnace takes up about 40% of your torso, but the ratchet takes up part of each limb and part of your torso too.

>>
>>171580895
the furnace is nice if you have thousands and thousands of max energy from all the electrozombies you've killed because you can just chop down + eat a tree to instantly refill

the passive ones like JTR are nicer for general use because you don't have to micromanage/think about them though
>>
>>171569725
Don't fight jellies in an open space, they will completely surround you and kill you, if you fight them in a corridor be careful because sometimes when they split the copy appears behind you and you won't be able to run away.

Stay away from water and mud in the deeper levels, there are monsters that can grapple you and they get 100% chance to hit you.

- a crappy version of haste that only works after an enemy tries to cast confuse at you
- a temporary rDisench buff for some reason, what the hell
- a mapping spell that's smaller-radius than every other mapping spell in the game to the point where you'd rather just carry _enlightenment (actually i think this one was buffed to just be normal mapping at some point)

maybe you'll get something neat from books 3 & 4
summoning piles of hasted warriors of the dawn and master mystics seems ok

Bog Monsters start spawning around depth 7 but you only get packs of them in depth 12.

Krakens start spawing around depth 15, those are tough fuckers and can easily kill you if you don't have a potion or staff that can help you.

the trick is that those summons only last for as long as your mp - meaning I'll have to do some masterful turn count management to ensure that any big packs I try and summon don't spontaneously disappear after 5 turns
>>

If you stay under 100% mana usage you can keep them around even at 0sp.

What I like to do for summon shenanigans is name a few important guys who i can keep around for less than 100% mana, then if I ever hit 0 I can just dismiss unnamed monsters and i'll keep the group of my favorite dudes.

>>
>>171599324
Well the main point of warriors of the dawn is that they're annoying fuckers who constantly respawn when they're killed (something like 6/7 chance to do so).
I guess they're more like meatshields who can eat an average of 7 breaths each rather than a decent damage source.

All it does is make a single-blow retaliation against the first monster to attack you, and then the posture automatically cancels itself. But it also gets canceled if you attack a monster normally.
Oh yeah and while Samurai are holding a posture they can't concentrate to regain sp.
So this thing is literally worse than useless.

...press C and look at the melee damage section on your character sheet?

This one has frost brand and slay undead, so it does bonus damage to monsters that don't resist cold and even more bonus damage against undead
Note that brands in *bands mostly don't stack. The game just picks whichever one is most effective against your current target. Exceptions in PCB are vampiric, sharpness, chaos, and mana brand.

b) Rage Strike: does sort of okay damage at the cost of 100hp and literally all of your sp
but i dont think paying 500sp for 850 damage is a very good exchange rate

c) just fucking give up on anything to do with your class and farm wands of rockets lmao

Rage-mage seems like a class with really shitty damage but pretty solid defenses actually.

Armor of fury in book3 stuns and slows even uniques that hit you with spell damage, and spell turning from book4 is a straight 35% chance to ignore any damage spell and turn it back in the monster's face, or 50% while berserk

if only berserking didn't send device skills to the trashcan, i bet they would be really good at the whole "spam wand of rockets until win" strategy

I started this run planning to go Kiku and use meph cloud as a support spell for my undead army, but it seems that in .19 they made simulacra last only a few dozen turns, so necromancy sucked and I just switched to evocations and melee. Guess I'm gonna have to go back a few versions if I want to play enjoyable necromancer. Also i found three (3) manuals of crossbow and the crossbow Damnation, so it was fun to get to 20 crossbows easily as a mummy.

No, i just stabbed most of them, i usually start casting undead army/simu at vaults and after, everything else i just use confuse/darkness/invis/blink if i find them, confuse not included
Also if i run into some enemies with high mr like some sort of dragons, elves and such i use drain bolt on them, it eats them alive, except shadow dragon or whatever his name is not, i usually try to confuse him for 2, 3 turns and if i fail, i kite him or use one corpse summon from kiku and then raise undead to
Also in most of my SpEn^Kiku runs i run into DChan and nice equipment, this is what i had last run i did which i stalled for weeks because of uni and similar

I've found a better way.
>Nailboard traps (you can build/dismantle to save materials) until level 1
>alternatively, snare triggers (need Survival 1) will also take you to level 1
>light snare kits (string can be found in janitor closets, and since the kit can be dismantled you only need 1) to level 2
>bear traps (springs can be found in cargo bays, "Under the Hood" can be found in dorm rooms, they can be dismantled) to level 3
>heavy snare kit (long rope may be found in cargo bays, can be turned into short rope) to level 4
At this point you can dismantle a teleport pad within a reasonable period of time. Also, at any point in the process, you can just place and dismantle your own traps until you gain a level.

That game was 0.19, so mummies still had a -1 to spellcasting. The change in trunk to a +2 certainly makes mummies easier, but makes mummy mages feel sorta similar to ogre mages, since the +4 difference between spellcasting aptitudes and spell school aptitudes means that it takes 1/2 as much XP to level spellcasting instead of a spell school. It makes them easier, but they're not as much of a scummy mummy anymore.

At XL 13 I had a necromancy enhancer for being mummy, and I also picked up a ring of ice, and also some sweet randart boots that pushed my int up to 23, so I ended up with pretty good spellpower on simulacrum for a mummy, yet they still lasted less than 50 turns. I guess if I was lucky enough to get dChannel AND simulacra from Kiku, then a pure necromancer of kiku run would have been smoother, but with just Simulacra I was losing piety

>>171672456
>Also, what level of trapping skill do I need to disarm teleport traps in a lab?
There's not a specific level. You roll a number between [your trapping skill] and 2*[your trapping skill], and this is your disarming attempt. Then you roll a 1d20, and if your Dex is higher than the resulting number, you add 1 to the disarming attempt. Then you roll another 1d20 and if your Perception is higher than the resulting number, you add 1 to the disarming attempt. You repeat those two rolls until both fail or they've added a total of 50 to the disarming attempt. If the final number is higher than the trap's difficulty, it's disarmed. Otherwise, the result varies according to how close you were to the target number.

With high stats, you could disarm a teleporter pad even with low skills. I've managed it as low as Trapping 4. If you take a bunch of drugs, presumably you'd have an easier time of it.

Stone Skin AC is 320 or so. Pretty significant overkill.
150 is cap for damage reduction ( 40% ) - well, 200 in case of SUPERHURT ( still 40% ). The miss-chance continues to increase, though.

I need to get more acid res from somewhere.

Actually the effective cap is 167 AC for SUPERHURT
the game takes the max of (damage unreduced by AC) vs 2*(damage reduced by AC), and 167 is when it hits 50% damage reduction.

Air is actually a mixture of gasses and only like ~30% of the average breath is actually oxygen. Breathing pure oxygen makes you more able to perform physically because you take much fewer breaths for the same amount of oxygen.

is that because of the solar panels or did you just not set up any lights around the area to let it see zombies
>>
>>171690568
There's an item called "inactive laser turret." You active it, and it creates a friendly turret monster. The turret is only capable of firing during the daytime, because it uses solar panels to power its shots. However, it produces a permanent light, like all other turrets. Unfortunately, all that does at night is draw in hostiles.

If you disassemble it while it's an item, you get three laser pistols and some other things. I am of the opinion that disassembling it would have been more profitable.

Molecular oxygen in itself, no. There are certainly heavily oxygenated compounds/molecules that are explosive, but making those is somewhat more involved.

Having plenty of oxygen around flammables will make it easier for them to combust fully, which could cause an explosion (this is how you get things like dust explosions in grain elevators), though that's not technically forming an explosive substance.

Laser = Heat
Heat gets stopped by mirror
if laserstrength>mirror mirror breaks

If heat does not get stopped by mirror goto 1

It's just DDA being DDA

that does make me think though: you could actually encase your laser turret in reinforced glass, considering just how easy it is to craft nowadays with the new fabrication changes, and have an unstoppable machine of death throughout the day. At night zombies will just inefficiently bash at the walls, then when day comes they'll be sitting ducks.

You're stuck with a 1% chance of dropping it on every throw even with max dex though.

I don't think polearm masters have anything that boosts accuracy. The self-damage miiight get halved by wraithform but even halved it's still scary.

Also polearmmaster has some passive abilities to automatically attack multiple enemies, right?
So you might end up triggering the passive whirlwind, automatically attacking everything around you, and dying from full health to 8 attacks' worth of misses.

It depends on the refractive index of the glass. Most glass has a very low refractive index and won't significantly attenuate a powerful laser. One could assume that glass used for observation rooms containing otherworldly entities in futuristic high-tech labs would have an even lower refractive index than normal glasses to allow for more accurate optical measurements.

tl;dr Yes you should be able to shoot things through glass with a laser.

IIRC Zangband, a variant that goes straight from the original Angband, was made by a dude who simply wanted new monsters in the game. There was once a variant by the same developer, Angband--, which apparently had a lot of Calvin and Hobbes inspired enemies on top of the original game.
>>
>>171702531
It's really easy to get started because you can make a simple variant without any coding whatsoever -- all the info on monsters, base item types, artifacts, and classes is stored in editable text files.

And Angband has been around for decades so there's been shitloads of time for people to do this.

>>
>>171739953
So what's the current status of possessors? Nerfed hard?
>>
>>171740269
Honestly, they aren't so overpowered, mainly because:
>Bodies don't heal
>body-death shock which drastically reduces GLOBAL speed for like 6 turns
>literally nothing aside forms to deal damage
They still have the super snowball potential (if you can survive to a boss and take his form you have the power of the gods, still limited by the hp), but their early is actually pretty hard in general, let alone on Madness.
I'd say it's not S tier like Archmage, but a solid B+ power-wise, S+ fun-wise.
>>
>>171740381
In non-endless modes you can grab a good body right away from a last hope citizen.
>>
>>171740438
Indeed, and you can also drown NPCs for some equipment + exp, it does make the early a bit more bearable.
The problem is that bodies are consumed like pop-corn until you invest a fuckton of points in the possessor ADVANCED tree (which requires a category point to unlock, then 15 points to fill the essentials)

So how do PCB anti-summon amulets work? Does it stop all summons, or is it just a reduced chance? Will it stop my summons from summoning? Will it stop me from summoning summoners?

the sorcery school of poschengband has very powerful detection magic, but it's not lovecraftian magic or anything. Dominions 4 isn't a roguelike, but they do a lot of types of magic, including lovecrafting/divination/necromancy well.

I don't understand Crawl, I really don't. I've got 15 runes year ago and don't feel any desire to play it anymore, the only more watered down experience could be Dredmor, and that's debatable.

I've found Dredmor to be fun with mods, but going full 15 floors is about as exciting as getting 15 runes in Crawl: you just drag the game way past the point where you basically won, nothing really changes to spice things up.

I mean, there's no reason to give up if you're having fun. People keep playing other roguelikes once they've beaten them, after all.

Personally I stopped caring about nethack after my best character who could charm dragons and was well on his way to ascending died from choking on food and I realized I had more fun reading the nethack wiki than I actually did playing nethack

not sure about your pet or personal summons, but I'd expect it to interfere since antimagic certainly screws up your own magic. Not actually sure though, it's rare enough that I've yet to find antisummoning while playing a summoner or carrying summoning devices.

yeah seconding balrog warrior, quite strong intrinsic stats/hp/melee/intrinsics and quite strong device skill (low devicing is the main lategame danger for warrior-types)

or monster race: demon balrog very strong too. Weaker melee than the warrior (priest-tier), but starts with an earlygame-OP whip of flame, has even more incredible intrinsic resists/stats, and comes with a cool and powerful racial spell list that does not require any spellbooks.

Tonberry monk of nature is also quite strong and fairly straightforward, but not being able to use most weapons or any heavy armors can be disappointing if you're not looking for that kind of conduct, since PCB has so many cool item drops that you would need to tearfully ignore.

I used to have the solutions memorized for the eight vanilla layouts.

Then the variants all add their own and start rotating them, and I have literally no idea who enjoys this.

>Is there a serious consequence to just passing through sokoban by climbing through the pits?
On the upper floor there are holes instead and levitation doesn't work. You can cheat somewhat with items but you still need to solve (see: look it up on the wiki and adjust for the rotations) most of the puzzle, they are mostly for recovering from mistakes.
