It's actually different. Jogress lets the two digimon combine into a form otherwise unavailable to their LINE. Impmon's Perfect is SkullSatamon, but Ogremon and Devimon can combine together into it even though they can't on their own. Jogress is combining two digimons to digivolve into a new digimon (at least in media besides v-pets; there it just a way to advance to the next life stage).

Jogress does have its rules though:

1. Only champion/Adult digimons and above can jogress.
2. They have to be in the same Life/Evo stage
3. They have to be in the same attribute as each other (Vaccine, Data, Virus)

There are some exceptions; like Chimeramon and Mugenmon fused to form Milleniumon, or BanchoLeomon and Darkdramon to form Chaosmon. But those are for rule 2 and 3; rule 1 is what separates Xros fusion from Jogress.

I was thinking about the Gomamon line...

Zudomon looks a lot like Bukamon (dark skin, orange body hair).
Ikkakumon looks a lot like Vikemon (white fur, dark skin around eyes, and the mouth, the body overall).
Gomamon looks a lot like Plesiomon (not pictured but still an alternate mega, both look more like a sea dinosaur instead of a sea lion ~ narwhal, and have white skin with purple ~ blue markings and reddish hair).

Yet, putting aside the resemblant pairs, when you compare outside of the pairs they can look vastly different.

Its kinda obvious I think but the point is, each evolution looks very different than the immediate previous one, but highly resembles another further back the line.

Is there any other line that has these intermittent resemblances? I think most lines I'm aware of have either a lot of vastly different designs at each step or are very incremental designs, or a combination of both things, but never intermittently.

For example, Tanemon->Palmon->Togemon->Lillymon are vastly different, except Lillymon->Rosemon which feels more like an incremental change but nothing like resembling a very old stage.

Another example, Agumon, all stages are kinda resemblant because its basically always an orangeish dinosaur~reptile that gets armor and stuff or body shape adapts but at core its still the same, so there's never a radical departure.

Or Tokomon->Patamon are very much alike, but then a wild change happens when going to Angemon, but from then onwards it feels incremental again, Angemon->MangaAngemon->Seraphimon.

Its almost always a mix between increments and radical departures, but not intermittently but I haven't seen other lines where each stage departs from the previous one but feels like an increment of a much older one.

Well, as far as emotional connection to the protags goes yeah, he definetly was a climax. But as far as the overall story and plot goes, Zhuqiaomon is responsible for the majority of tamers, given that he led the deva, who in turn corrupted Impmon into Beelzemon, he was the one hunting for Calumon, and he was the one with actual knowledge of the D-Reaper and had the battle plan against it. Not to mention that he managed to shake off the battles with St.Galgomon, Gallantmon and Quinglongmon and later went on to fight the D-Reaper. Big Bird was definetly a major player in tamers

Also many of the X's could be optional and reserved as plenty of superbosses (or exclusive to hard mode) for masochist people, for which you'd have to build a whole new team (with the proposed abundance of added megas).

Isn't Shakkoumon based on the Dogu dolls? You have three ways to go with it:
1-Haniwa dolls, another type of japanese mud doll
2-Base it around it being basically a venus figurine so it gets either Venusmon or another evo
3-According to some it's actually the representation of an ancient astronaut. Either it gets Ebemon or maybe something based on theosology (space angels) or on out of place artifacts
